Abstract:Metric dimension is a valuable parameter that helps address problems related to network design, localization, and information retrieval by identifying the minimum number of landmarks required to uniquely determine distances between vertices in a graph. Generalized Sierpiński graphs represent a captivating class of fractal-inspired networks that have gained prominence in various scientific disciplines and practical applications. Their fractal nature has also found relevance in antenna design, image compression, and the study of porous materials. The hypercube is a prevalent interconnection network architecture known for its symmetry, vertex transitivity, regularity, recursive structure, high connectedness, and simple routing. Various variations of hypercubes have emerged in literature to meet the demands of practical applications. Sometimes, they are the spanning subgraphs of it. This study examines the generalized Sierpiński graphs over $C_4$, which are spanning subgraphs of hypercubes and determines the metric dimension and their variants. This is in contrast to hypercubes, where these properties are inherently complicated. Along the way, the role of twin vertices in the theory of metric dimensions is further elaborated.

A Connection between Metric Dimension and Distinguishing Number of Graphs

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a connection between two classical concepts of graph theory: \; metric dimension and distinguishing number. For a given graph $G$, let ${\rm dim}(G)$ and $D(G)$ represent its metric dimension and distinguishing number, respectively. We show that in connected graphs, any resolving set breaks the symmetry in the graphs. Precisely, if $G$ is a connected graph with a resolving set $S=\{v_1, v_2, \ldots, v_n \}$, then $\{\{v_1\}, \{v_2\}, \ldots, \{v_n\}, V(G)\setminus S \}$ is a partition of $V(G)$ into a distinguishing coloring, and as a consequence $D(G)\leq {\rm dim}(G)+1$. Furthermore, we construct graphs $G$ such that $D(G)=n$ and ${\rm dim}(G)=m$ for all values of $n$ and $m$, where $1\leq n< m$. Using this connection, we have characterized all graphs $G$ of order $n$ with $D(G) \in \{n-1, n-2\}$. For any graph $G$, let $G_c = G$ if $G$ is connected, and $G_c = \overline{G}$ if $G$ is disconnected. Let $G^{\ast}$ denote the twin graph obtained from $G$ by contracting any maximal set of vertices with the same open or close neighborhood into a vertex. Let {\rsfs F} be the set of all graphs except graphs $G$ with the property that ${\rm dim}(G_c)=|V(G)|-4$, ${\rm diam}(G_c) \in \{2, 3\}$ and $5\leq |V(G_{c}^{\ast})| \leq 9$. We characterize all graphs $G \in$ {\rsfs F} of order $n$ with the property that $D(G)= n-3$.

Metric dimension parameterized by treewidth in chordal graphs

Abstract:The metric dimension has been introduced independently by Harary, Melter and Slater in 1975 to identify vertices of a graph G using its distances to a subset of vertices of G. A resolving set X of a graph G is a subset of vertices such that, for every pair (u,v) of vertices of G, there is a vertex x in X such that the distance between x and u and the distance between x and v are distinct. The metric dimension of the graph is the minimum size of a resolving set. Computing the metric dimension of a graph is NP-hard even on split graphs and interval graphs. Bonnet and Purohit proved that the metric dimension problem is W[1]-hard parameterized by treewidth. Li and Pilipczuk strenghtened this result by showing that it is NP-hard for graphs of treewidth. In this article, we prove that that metric dimension is FPT parameterized by treewidth in chordal graphs.

Abstract:We extend known results on chordal graphs and distance-hereditary graphs to much larger graph classes by using only a common metric property of these graphs. Specifically, a graph is called -metric ( ) if it satisfies the following -metric property for every vertices u , w , v and x : if a shortest path between u and w and a shortest path between x and v share a terminal edge vw , then . Roughly, gluing together any two shortest paths along a common terminal edge may not necessarily result in a shortest path but yields a "near-shortest" path with defect at most i . It is known that -metric graphs are exactly ptolemaic graphs, and that chordal graphs and distance-hereditary graphs are -metric for and , respectively. We show that an additive O ( i )-approximation of the radius, of the diameter, and in fact of all vertex eccentricities of an -metric graph can be computed in total linear time. Our strongest results are obtained for -metric graphs, for which we prove that a central vertex can be computed in subquadratic time, and even better in linear time for so-called -metric graphs (a superclass of chordal graphs and of plane triangulations with inner vertices of degree at least 7). The latter answers a question raised in Dragan (Inf Probl Lett 154:105873, 2020), 2020). Our algorithms follow from new results on centers and metric intervals of -metric graphs. In particular, we prove that the diameter of the center is at most (at most 3, if ). The latter partly answers a question raised in Yushmanov and Chepoi (Math Probl Cybernet 3:217–232, 1991).

Abstract:In the Metric Dimension problem, one asks for a minimum-size set R of vertices such that for any pair of vertices of the graph, there is a vertex from R whose two distances to the vertices of the pair are distinct. This problem has mainly been studied on undirected graphs and has gained a lot of attention in the recent years. We focus on directed graphs, and show how to solve the problem in linear-time on digraphs whose underlying undirected graph (ignoring multiple edges) is a tree. This (nontrivially) extends a previous algorithm for oriented trees. We then extend the method to unicyclic digraphs (understood as the digraphs whose underlying undirected multigraph has a unique cycle). We also give a fixed-parameter-tractable algorithm for digraphs when parameterized by the directed modular-width, extending a known result for undirected graphs. Finally, we show that Metric Dimension is NP-hard even on planar triangle-free acyclic digraphs of maximum degree 6.

On Sharp Bounds of Local Fractional Metric Dimension for Certain Symmetrical Algebraic Structure Graphs

Abstract:The smallest set of vertices needed to differentiate or categorize every other vertex in a graph is referred to as the graph's metric dimension. Finding the class of graphs for a particular given metric dimension is an NP-hard problem. This concept has applications in many different domains, including graph theory, network architecture, and facility location problems. A graph $G$ with order $n$ is known as a Toeplitz graph over the subset $S$ of consecutive collections of integers from one to $n$, and two vertices will be adjacent to each other if their absolute difference is a member of $S$. A graph $G(\mathbb{Z}_{n})$ is called a zero-divisor graph over the zero divisors of a commutative ring $\mathbb{Z}_{n}$, in which two vertices will be adjacent to each other if their product will leave the remainder zero under modulo $n$. Since the local fractional metric dimension problem is NP-hard, it is computationally difficult to identify an optimal solution or to precisely determine the minimal size of a local resolving set; in the worst case, the process takes exponential time. Different upper bound sequences of local fractional metric dimension are suggested in this article, along with a comparison analysis for certain families of Toeplitz and zero-divisor graphs. Furthermore, we note that the analyzed local fractional metric dimension upper bounds fall into three metric families: constant, limited, and unbounded.

Abstract:The metric dimension of a graph measures how uniquely vertices may be identified using a set of landmark vertices. This concept is frequently used in the study of network architecture, location-based problems and communication. Given a graph $G$, the metric dimension, denoted as $\dim(G)$, is the minimum size of a resolving set, a subset of vertices such that for every pair of vertices in $G$, there exists a vertex in the resolving set whose shortest path distance to the two vertices is different. This subset of vertices helps to uniquely determine the location of other vertices in the graph. A basis is a resolving set with a least cardinality. Finding a basis is a problem with practical applications in network design, where it is important to efficiently locate and identify nodes based on a limited set of reference points. The Cartesian product of $P_m$ and $P_n$ is the grid network in network science. In this paper, we investigate two novel types of grids in network science: the Villarceau grid Type I and Type II. For each of these grid types, we find the precise metric dimension.

Abstract:Classical Hamming graphs are Cartesian products of complete graphs, and two vertices are adjacent if they differ in exactly one coordinate. Motivated by connections to unitary Cayley graphs, we consider a generalization where two vertices are adjacent if they have no coordinate in common. Metric dimension of classical Hamming graphs is known asymptotically, but, even in the case of hypercubes, few exact values have been found. In contrast, we determine the metric dimension for the entire diagonal family of $3$-dimensional generalized Hamming graphs. Our approach is constructive and made possible by first characterizing resolving sets in terms of forbidden subgraphs of an auxiliary edge-colored hypergraph.

Abstract:A subset Δ of non-negative integers N0 is called a numerical semigroup if it is a submonoid of N0 and has a finite complement in N0 . A graph GΔ is called a Δ(α,β) -graph if there exists a numerical semigroup Δ with multiplicity α and embedding dimension β such that V(GΔ)={vi:i∈N0∖Δ} and E(GΔ)={vivj⇔i+j∈Δ} . In this article, we compute the Δ(α,β) -graphs for irreducible and Arf numerical semigroups having a metric dimension of 2. It is proved that if Δ be an irreducible and arf numerical semigroup then there are exactly 2 and 8 non-isomorphic Δ(α,β) -graphs respectively, whose metric dimension is 2.

The results obtained reveal insights into the connectivity, the structural properties, and the spectral distinctiveness.

Abstract:The inclusion ideal graph of a commutative unitary ring $R$ is the (undirected) graph $In(R)$ whose vertices all non-trivial ideals of $R$ and two distinct vertices are adjacent if and only if one of them is a proper subset of the other one. In this paper, the metric dimension of $In(R)$ is discussed. Moreover, the structure of the resolving graph of $In(R)$ is characterized and as an application, we compute the strong metric dimension of $In(R)$.

Abstract:For a graph $G$, a subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ is called a resolving set of $G$ if, for any two vertices $u,v\in V(G)$, there exists a vertex $w\in S$ such that $d(w,u)\neq d(w,v)$. The Metric Dimension problem takes as input a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices and a positive integer $k$, and asks whether there exists a resolving set of size at most $k$. In another metric-based graph problem, Geodetic Set, the input is a graph $G$ and an integer $k$, and the objective is to determine whether there exists a subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ of size at most $k$ such that, for any vertex $u \in V(G)$, there are two vertices $s_1, s_2 \in S$ such that $u$ lies on a shortest path from $s_1$ to $s_2$.

Abstract:Metric mean dimension is a geometric invariant of dynamical systems with infinite topological entropy. We relate this concept with the fractal structure of the phase space and the Hölder regularity of the map. Afterwards we improve our general estimates in a family of interval maps by computing the metric mean dimension in a way similar to the Misiurewicz formula for the entropy, which in particular shows that our bounds are sharp. Of independent interest, we develop a dynamical analogue of Minkowski-Bouligand dimension for maps acting on Ahlfors regular spaces.

Abstract:The prime ideal sum graph of a commutative unital ring $R$, denoted by $PIS(R)$, is an undirect and simple graph whose vertices are non-trivial ideals of $R$ and there exists and edge between to distinct vertices if and only if their sum is a prime ideal of $R$. In this paper, the metric dimension of $PIS(R)$ is discussed and some formulae for this parameter in $PIS(R)$ are given.

The vertex [math] is said to resolve a pair [math] and [math] if and only if [math]. A set [math] is defined as a resolving set of [math] if for all [math], the pair [math] is resolved by some [math]. The minimum cardinality of a resolve set of [math] is defined as [math]. A set [math] is a local resolve set of [math] if for all [math] such that [math], the pair [math] is resolved by some [math]. The minimum cardinality of a local resolve set of [math] is defined as [math]. An edge [math] is said to be monitored by [math] if [math] or [math]. A set [math] is a distance-edge-monitoring (DEM) set if for all [math], [math] is monitored by some [math]. The minimum cardinality of a [math] set of [math] is defined as [math]. In this paper, we obtained that [math] for all non trivial graphs with order [math], and the exact value of [math] and [math] for [math], [math]. Also, we obtained that if [math] then [math]. With respect to the relation between the defined graph invariants, it was proved a bound for [math] for [math] and the exact values of [math] for [math], where [math] (resp, [math])is the maximum value of [math] (resp, [math]) over all graphs [math] with order [math]. Finally, we proved that for [math], there exists a graph with order [math] such that [math] and [math].

Abstract:Metric dimensions and metric basis are graph invariants studied for their use in locating and indexing nodes in a graph. It was recently established that for bicyclic graph of type-III ($\Theta $-graphs), the metric dimension is $3$ only, when all paths have equal lengths, or when one of the outside path has a length $2$ more than the other two paths. In this article, we refute this claim and show that the case where the middle path is $2$ vertices more than the other two paths, also has metric dimension $3$. We also determine the metric dimension for other values of $p,q,r$ which were omitted in the recent research due to the constraint $p \leq q \leq r$. We also propose a graph-based technique to transform an agricultural supply chain logistics problem into a mathematical model, by using metric basis and metric dimensions. We provide a theoretical groundwork which can be used to model and solve these problems using machine learning algorithms.

Abstract:Metric dimension is an essential parameter in graph theory that aids in addressing issues pertaining to information retrieval, localization, network design, and chemistry through the identification of the least possible number of elements necessary to identify the distances between vertices in a graph uniquely. A variant of metric dimension, called the edge metric dimension focuses on distinguishing the edges in a graph $G$, with a vertex subset. The minimum possible number of vertices in such a set is denoted as $\dim_E(G)$. This paper presents the precise edge metric dimension of silicate networks.

Abstract:Assouad-Nagata dimension addresses both large and small scale behaviors of metric spaces and is a refinement of Gromov's asymptotic dimension. A metric space $M$ is a minor-closed metric if there exists an (edge-)weighted graph $G$ satisfying a fixed minor-closed property such that the underlying space of $M$ is the vertex-set of $G$, and the metric of $M$ is the distance function in $G$. Minor-closed metrics naturally arise when removing redundant edges of the underlying graphs by using edge-deletion and edge-contraction. In this paper, we determine the Assouad-Nagata dimension of every minor-closed metric. Our main theorem simultaneously generalizes known results about the asymptotic dimension of $H$-minor free unweighted graphs and about the Assouad-Nagata dimension of complete Riemannian surfaces with finite Euler genus.
