Abstract:We consider the DC (difference of two convex functions) optimization problem (P) inf (x is an element of X){(f(1)(x) - f(2)(x) + (g(1)(Ax) - g(2)(Ax))}, where f(1), f(2), g(1), and g(2) are proper convex functions defined on locally convex Hausdorff topological vector spaces X and Y, and A is a linear continuous operator from X to Y. Adopting different tactics, two types of the Fenchel dual problems of (P) are given. By using the properties of the epigraph of the conjugate functions, some sufficient and necessary conditions for the weak duality of (P) are provided. Sufficient and/or necessary conditions for the strong Fenchel duality, the stable Fenchel duality, and the stable total duality are derived.

Abstract:We consider the optimization problem $(P_{A})$ $\inf_{x\in X}\{f(x)+g(Ax)\}$ where $f$ and $g$ are proper convex functions defined on locally convex Hausdorff topological vector spaces $X$ and $Y$, respectively, and $A$ is a linear operator from $X$ to $Y$. By using the properties of the epigraph of the conjugated functions, some sufficient and necessary conditions for the strong Fenchel duality and the strong converse Fenchel duality of $(P_{A})$ are provided. Sufficient and necessary conditions for the stable Fenchel duality and for the total Fenchel duality are also derived.

Abstract:Convex algebraic geometry concerns the interplay between optimization theory and real algebraic geometry. Its objects of study include convex semialgebraic sets that arise in semidefinite programming and from sums of squares. This article compares three notions of duality that are relevant in these contexts: duality of convex bodies, duality of projective varieties, and the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions derived from Lagrange duality. We show that the optimal value of a polynomial program is an algebraic function whose minimal polynomial is expressed by the hypersurface projectively dual to the constraint set. We give an exposition of recent results on the boundary structure of the convex hull of a compact variety, we contrast this to Lasserre's representation as a spectrahedral shadow, and we explore the geometric underpinnings of semidefinite programming duality.

Abstract:Feasible sets play an important role in model predictive control (MPC) optimal control problems (OCPs). This paper proposes a multi-parametric programming-based algorithm to compute the feasible set for OCP derived from MPC-based algorithms involving both spectrahedron (represented by linear matrix inequalities) and polyhedral (represented by a set of inequalities) constraints. According to the geometrical meaning of the inner product of vectors, the maximum length of the projection vector from the feasible set to a unit spherical coordinates vector is computed and the optimal solution has been proved to be one of the vertices of the feasible set. After computing the vertices, the convex hull of these vertices is determined which equals the feasible set. The simulation results show that the proposed method is especially efficient for low dimensional feasible set computation and avoids the non-unicity problem of optimizers as well as the memory consumption problem that encountered by projection algorithms.

Abstract:Disjunctive Answer Set Programming is a powerful declarative programming paradigm with complexity beyond NP. Identifying classes of programs for which the consistency problem is in NP is of interest from the theoretical standpoint and can potentially lead to improvements in the design of answer set programming solvers. One of such classes consists of dual-normal programs, where the number of positive body atoms in proper rules is at most one. Unlike other classes of programs, dual-normal programs have received little attention so far. In this paper we study this class. We relate dual-normal programs to propositional theories and to normal programs by presenting several inter-translations. With the translation from dual-normal to normal programs at hand, we introduce the novel class of body-cycle free programs, which are in many respects dual to head-cycle free programs. We establish the expressive power of dual-normal programs in terms of SE- and UE-models, and compare them to normal programs. We also discuss the complexity of deciding whether dual-normal programs are strongly and uniformly equivalent.

Abstract:We revisit optimization theory involving set functions which are defined on a family of measurable subsets in a measure space. In this paper, we focus on a minimax fractional programming problem with subdifferentiable set functions. Using nonparametric necessary optimality conditions, we introduce generalized $(\mathcal{F},\rho, \theta)$-convexity to establish several sufficient optimality conditions for a minimax programming problem, and construct a new dual model to unify the Wolfe type dual and the Mond-Weir type dual as special cases of this dual programming problem. Finally we establish a weak, strong, and strict converse duality theorem.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish some quotient calculus rules in terms of contingent derivatives for the two extended-real-valued functions defined on a Banach space and study a nonsmooth multiobjective fractional programming problem with set, generalized inequality and equality constraints. We define a new parametric problem associated with these problem and introduce some concepts for the (local) weak minimizers to such problems. Some primal and dual necessary optimality conditions in terms of contingent derivatives for the local weak minimizers are provided. Under suitable assumptions, sufficient optimality conditions for the local weak minimizers which are very close to necessary optimality conditions are obtained. An application of the result for establishing three parametric, Mond–Weir and Wolfe dual problems and several various duality theorems for the same is presented. Some examples are also given for our findings.

Abstract:This paper, which is presented in two parts, is a contribution to the theory of fractional programming, i.e., maximization of quotients subject to constraints. In Part I a duality theory for linear and concave-convex fractional programs is developed and related to recent results by Bector, Craven-Mond, Jagannathan, Sharma-Swarup, et al. Basic duality theorems of linear, quadratic and convex programming are extended. In Part II Dinkelbach's algorithm solving fractional programs is considered. The rate of convergence as well as a priori and a posteriori error estimates are determined. In view of these results the stopping rule of the algorithm is changed. Also the starting rule is modified using duality as introduced in Part I. Furthermore a second algorithm is proposed. In contrast to Dinkelbach's procedure the rate of convergence is still controllable. Error estimates are obtained too.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a new dual program, which is representable as a semi-definite linear programming problem, for a primal convex minimax programming model problem and show that there is no duality gap between the primal and the dual whenever the functions involved are SOS-convex polynomials. Under a suitable constraint qualification, we derive strong duality results for this class of minimax problems. Consequently, we present applications of our results to robust SOS-convex programming problems under data uncertainty and to minimax fractional programming problems with SOS-convex polynomials. We obtain these results by first establishing sum of squares polynomial representations of non-negativity of a convex max function over a system of SOS-convex constraints. The new class of SOS-convex polynomials is an important subclass of convex polynomials and it includes convex quadratic functions and separable convex polynomials. The SOS-convexity of polynomials can numerically be checked by solving semi-definite programming problems whereas numerically verifying convexity of polynomials is generally very hard.
Convexoid: A Minimal Theory of Conjugate Convexity

Abstract:A key idea in convex optimization theory is to use well-structured affine functions to approximate general functions, leading to impactful developments in conjugate functions and convex duality theory. This raises the question: what are the minimal requirements to establish these results? This paper aims to address this inquiry through a carefully crafted system called the convexoid. We demonstrate that fundamental constructs, such as conjugate functions and subdifferentials, along with their relationships, can be derived within this minimal system. Building on this, we define the associated duality systems and develop conditions for weak and strong duality, generalizing the classic results of conjugate duality theory. Due to its simplicity, our framework supports various approximation schemes, including approximating general functions using symmetric-conic, bilinear, or piecewise constant functions, and representing general structures such as graphs, set systems, fuzzy sets, or toposes using special membership functions. The associated duality results for these systems also open new opportunities for establishing bounds on objective values and verifying structural properties.

Abstract:Abstract A new class of (not necessarily differentiable) multiobjective fractional programming problems with E -differentiable functions is considered. The so-called parametric E -Karush–Kuhn–Tucker necessary optimality conditions and, under E -convexity hypotheses, sufficient E -optimality conditions are established for such nonsmooth vector optimization problems. Further, various duality models are formulated for the considered E -differentiable multiobjective fractional programming problems and several E -duality results are derived also under appropriate E -convexity hypotheses.

Abstract:In this paper, a dual of a given linear fractional program is defined and the weak, direct and converse duality theorems are proved. Both the primal and the dual are linear fractional programs. This duality theory leads to necessary and sufficient conditions for the optimality of a given feasible solution. A unmerical example is presented to illustrate the theory in this connection. The equivalence of Charnes and Cooper dual and Dinkelbach’s parametric dual of a linear fractional program is also established.
