Abstract:We show the existence of an infinite collection of hyperbolic knots where each of which has in its exterior meridional essential planar surfaces of arbitrarily large number of boundary components, or, equivalently, that each of these knots has essential tangle decompositions of arbitrarily large number of strings. Moreover, each of these knots has in its exterior meridional essential surfaces of any positive genus and (even) number of boundary components. That is, the compact surfaces that have a meridional essential embedding into a hyperbolic knot exterior have meridional essential embeddings into each of these hyperbolic knots exteriors.

Abstract:We provide three 3-dimensional characterizations of the Z-slice genus of a knot, the minimal genus of a locally-flat surface in 4-space cobounding the knot whose complement has cyclic fundamental group: in terms of balanced algebraic unknotting, in terms of Seifert surfaces, and in terms of presentation matrices of the Blanchfield pairing. This result generalizes to a knot in an integer homology 3-sphere and surfaces in certain simply connected signature zero 4-manifolds cobounding this homology sphere. Using the Blanchfield characterization, we obtain effective lower bounds for the Z-slice genus from the linking pairing of the double branched covering of the knot. In contrast, we show that for odd primes p, the linking pairing on the first homology of the p-fold branched covering is determined up to isometry by the action of the deck transformation group on said first homology. As an application of the new upper and lower bounds, we complete the calculation of the Z-slice genus for all prime knots with crossing number up to 12.

Abstract:For a prime knot group, the classifying space for the family of the subgroups generated by the meridians can be seen as an abstract analogue of the ambient manifold in which the knot lives. An explicit model of this ambient classifying space is constructed as a branched covering space of the 3-sphere branched over the knot; more general branched covering spaces, obtained quotienting the ambient classifying space by finite-index normal subgroups, are studied. Various homological properties of said spaces are established, some of which have parallels in algebraic number theory. In particular, prime knot groups are shown to be Bieri-Eckmann, but not Poincaré, duality groups for Bredon cohomology with respect to the family of the meridians.

Abstract:We resolve a case of the oriented knot complement conjecture by showing that knots in an orientable circle bundle $N$ over a genus $g \geq 2$ surface $S$ are determined by their complements. We apply this to the setting of canonical knots in the unit and projective tangent bundles, which are knots that are the set of tangents to a closed curve on $S$. We show that canonical knots have homeomorphic complements if and only if their shadows differ by Reidemeister moves, (de)stabilizations, loops/cusps added by transvections, and mapping classes of $S$.

Abstract:For any (1,1)-knot in a lens space, we construct a co-oriented taut foliation in its complement that intersects the boundary torus transversely in a suspension foliation of the knot meridian, or the infinity slope. This provides new evidence for a conjecture made by Boyer, Gordon and Hu using slope detections, related to the L-space conjecture.

Abstract:It follows from Culler, Gordon, Luecke and Shalen's Cyclic Surgery Theorem that any knot complement is covered by at most two knot complements. Gonzales-Acuna and Whitten proved a result on the other direction: A given knot complement can cover at most finitely many knot complements. This paper is to show that the best possible result in this direction holds: A given knot complement can nontrivially cover at most one knot complement. Moreover, if the knot is not a torus knot, then the covering map is unique up to equivalence.

Abstract:Lueck expressed the Gromov norm of a knot complement in terms of an infinite series that can be computed from a presentation of the fundamental group of the knot complement. In this note we show that Lueck's formula, applied to torus knots, yields surprising power series expansions for the logarithm function. This generalizes an infinite series of Lehmer for the natural logarithm of 4.

Abstract:Kakimizu complexes have been found for several classes of links. O.Kakimizu found the Kakimizu complexes of knots with crossing number less than or equal to 10. Hatcher and Thurston found the 0-skeleton of the Kakimizu complex of 2-bridge links. Sakuma later generalized the result for special arborescent links and found the Kakimizu complexes for the same. Jessica Banks gave a complete proof of results announced by Hirasawa and Sakuma, describing explicitly the Kakimizu complexes of non-split, prime special alternating links. The Kakimizu complexes of prime, non-split alternating links have finite number of vertices. In this paper we compute the Kakimizu complexes for all $11$ crossing prime, alternating knots, explicitly describing each of them. For most knots and links we use known algorithms. The rest of the Kakimizu complexes were found by using Murasugi sums and sutured manifold theory developed by Gabai, Scharlemann, Kakimizu and others.

Abstract:We show that closures of homogeneous braids are visually prime, addressing a question of Cromwell. The key technical tool for the proof is the following criterion concerning primeness of open books, which we consider to be of independent interest. For open books of 3-manifolds the property of having no fixed essential arcs is preserved under essential Murasugi sums with a strictly right-veering open book, if the plumbing region of the original open book veers to the left. We also provide examples of open books in S^3 demonstrating that primeness is not necessarily preserved under essential Murasugi sum, in fact not even under stabilizations a.k.a. Hopf plumbings. Furthermore, we find that trefoil plumbings need not preserve primeness. In contrast, we establish that figure-eight knot plumbings do preserve primeness.

Unknotted Curves on Seifert Surfaces

Abstract:We consider homologically essential simple closed curves on Seifert surfaces of genus one knots in $S^3$, and in particular those that are unknotted or slice in $S^3$. We completely characterize all such curves for most twist knots: they are either positive or negative braid closures; moreover, we determine exactly which of those are unknotted. A surprising consequence of our work is that the figure eight knot admits infinitely many unknotted essential curves up to isotopy on its genus one Seifert surface, and those curves are enumerated by Fibonacci numbers. On the other hand, we prove that many twist knots admit homologically essential curves that cannot be positive or negative braid closures. Indeed, among those curves, we exhibit an example of a slice but not unknotted homologically essential simple closed curve. We further investigate our study of unknotted essential curves for arbitrary Whitehead doubles of non-trivial knots, and obtain that there is a precisely one unknotted essential simple closed curve in the interior of the doubles' standard genus one Seifert surface. As a consequence of all these we obtain many new examples of 3-manifolds that bound contractible 4-manifolds.

An [math] pearl chain necklace [math] is the union of [math] and [math]. We will construct, via the action of a Kleinian group, a sequence of nested pearl chain necklaces [math] whose inverse limit is a wild knot of dynamically defined type [math]. In this paper, we will prove some topological properties of this kind of wild knots; in particular, we generalize the construction of cyclic branched coverings for this case, and we show that there exists a wild knot of dynamically defined type such that [math] is an [math]-fold cyclic branched covering of [math] along it, for [math].

Abstract:The ratio of volume to crossing number of a hyperbolic knot is known to be bounded above by the volume of a regular ideal octahedron, and a similar bound is conjectured for the knot determinant per crossing. We investigate a natural question motivated by these bounds: For which knots are these ratios nearly maximal? We show that many families of alternating knots and links simultaneously maximize both ratios.

Abstract:The $k$th module of a surface-knot of a genus $g$ in the 4-sphere is the $k$th integral homology module of the infinite cyclic covering of the surface-knot complement. The reduced first module is the quotient module of the first module by the finite sub-module defining the torsion linking. It is shown that the reduced first module for every genus $g$ is characterized in terms of properties of a finitely generated module. As a by-product, a concrete example of the fundamental group of a surface-knot of genus $g$ which is not the fundamental group of any surface-knot of genus $g-1$ is given for every $g>0$. The torsion part and the torsion-free part of the second module are determined by the reduced first module and the genus-class on the reduced first module. The third module vanishes. The concept of an exact leaf of a surface-knot is introduced, whose linking is an orthogonal sum of the torsion linking and a hyperbolic linking.

Abstract:This article is concerned with locally flatly immersed surfaces in simply-connected $4$-manifolds where the complement of the surface has fundamental group $\mathbb{Z}$. Once the genus and number of double points are fixed, we classify such immersed surfaces in terms of the equivariant intersection form of their exterior and a secondary invariant. Applications include criteria for deciding when an immersed $\mathbb{Z}$-surface in $S^4$ is isotopic to the standard immersed surface that is obtained from an unknotted surface by adding local double points. As another application, we enumerate $\mathbb{Z}$-disks in $D^4$ with a single double point and boundary a given knot; we prove that the number of such disks may be infinite. We also prove that a knot bounds a $\mathbb{Z}$-disk in $D^4$ with $c_+$ positive double points and $c_-$ negative double points if and only if it can be converted into an Alexander polynomial one knot via changing $c_+$ positive crossings and $c_-$ negative crossings. In $4$-manifolds other than $D^4$ and $S^4$, applications include measuring the extent to which immersed $\mathbb{Z}$-surfaces are determined by the equivariant intersection form of their exterior. Along the way, we prove that any two $\mathbb{Z}^2$-concordances between the Hopf link and an Alexander polynomial one link $L$ are homeomorphic rel. boundary.

A lower bound for the genus of a knot using the Links-Gould invariant

Abstract:The Links-Gould invariant of links $LG^{2,1}$ is a two-variable generalization of the Alexander-Conway polynomial. Using representation theory of $U_{q}\mathfrak{gl}(2 \vert 1)$, we prove that the degree of the Links-Gould polynomial provides a lower bound on the Seifert genus of any knot, therefore improving the bound known as the Seifert inequality in the case of the Alexander invariant. One practical consequence of this new genus bound is a straightforward proof of the fact that the Kinoshita-Terasaka and Conway knots have genus greater or equal to 2.

Abstract:It is well-known that complex hyperbolic triangle groups $\Delta(3,3,4)$ generated by three complex reflections $I_1,I_2,I_3$ in $\mbox{PU(2,1)}$ has 1-dimensional moduli space. Deforming the representations from the classical $\mathbb{R}$-Fuchsian one to $\Delta(3,3,4; \infty)$, that is, when $I_3I_2I_1I_2$ is accidental parabolic, the 3-manifolds at infinity change from a Seifert 3-manifold to the figure-eight knot complement. When $I_3I_2I_1I_2$ is loxodromic, there is an open set $\Omega \subset \partial\mathbf H^{2}_{\mathbb C}=\mathbb S^3$ associated to $I_3I_2I_1I_2$, which is a subset of the discontinuous region. We show the quotient space $\Omega/ \Delta(3,3,4)$ is always the figure-eight knot complement in the deformation process. This gives the topological/geometrical explain that the 3-manifold at infinity of $\Delta(3,3,4; \infty)$ is the figure-eight knot complement. In particular, this confirms a conjecture of Falbel-Guilloux-Will.

Abstract:We introduce an invariant of a hyperbolic knot which is a map $\alpha\mapsto \boldsymbol{\Phi}_\alpha(h)$ from $\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}$ to matrices with entries in $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}[[h]]$ and with rows and columns indexed by the boundary parabolic ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ representations of the fundamental group of the knot. These matrix invariants have a rich structure: (a) their $(\sigma_0,\sigma_1)$ entry, where $\sigma_0$ is the trivial and $\sigma_1$ the geometric representation, is the power series expansion of the Kashaev invariant of the knot around the root of unity ${\rm e}^{2\pi{\rm i} \alpha}$ as an element of the Habiro ring, and the remaining entries belong to generalized Habiro rings of number fields; (b) the first column is given by the perturbative power series of Dimofte-Garoufalidis; (c) the columns of $\boldsymbol{\Phi}$ are fundamental solutions of a linear $q$-difference equation; (d) the matrix defines an ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-cocycle $W_\gamma$ in matrix-valued functions on $\mathbb{Q}$ that conjecturally extends to a smooth function on $\mathbb{R}$ and even to holomorphic functions on suitable complex cut planes, lifting the factorially divergent series $\boldsymbol{\Phi}(h)$ to actual functions. The two invariants $\boldsymbol{\Phi}$ and $W_\gamma$ are related by a refined quantum modularity conjecture which we illustrate in detail for the three simplest hyperbolic knots, the $4_1$, $5_2$ and $(-2,3,7)$ pretzel knots. This paper has two sequels, one giving a different realization of our invariant as a matrix of convergent $q$-series with integer coefficients and the other studying its Habiro-like arithmetic properties in more depth.
