Abstract:The motion of energetic particles in magnetic turbulence across a mean magnetic field is explored analytically. The approach presented here allows for a full time-dependent description of the transport, including compound sub-diffusion. The first time it is shown systematically that as soon as there is transverse structure of the turbulence, diffusion is restored even if no Coulomb collisions are invoked. Criteria for sub-diffusion and normal Markovian diffusion are found as well.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore the problem of high - energy particle transport perpendicular to the average magnetic field direction in magnetic turbulence without Coulomb collisions. Specifically, the author attempts to solve the following two core problems: 1. **Factors triggering vertical diffusion**: When there are no Coulomb collisions, what physical effects can trigger diffusion in the vertical direction? The paper mentions that even in the absence of Coulomb collisions, as long as the turbulence has a transverse structure (i.e., the transverse complexity of the magnetic field), vertical diffusion can still be restored. 2. **Time - dependent transport theory**: Can a time - dependent vertical transport theory be developed that can describe compound sub - diffusion in the early stage and recover normal diffusion behavior in the later stage? ### Main findings - **Recovery of vertical diffusion**: The author systematically proves for the first time that as long as there is a transverse structure of turbulence, vertical diffusion can be restored even without Coulomb collisions. This is achieved by analyzing the influence of the transverse complexity of the magnetic field on particle motion. - **Transition from sub - diffusion to normal diffusion**: The paper proposes a time - dependent nonlinear theory that can describe the transition process from compound sub - diffusion in the early stage to normal diffusion in the later stage. This theory is realized by introducing the time - evolution equations of the parallel correlation function and the vertical diffusion coefficient. ### Formula summary - **Time - evolution equation of the vertical diffusion coefficient**: \[ \frac{d^2}{dt^2}\langle(\Delta x)^2\rangle=\frac{2}{B_0^2}\int d^3k\,P_{xx}(\vec{k})\,\xi(t, 0)\,e^{-\frac{1}{2}\langle(\Delta x)^2\rangle k_{\perp}^2} \] where \(\xi(t, 0)\) is the parallel correlation function and \(P_{xx}(\vec{k})\) is the \(xx\) component of the magnetic field correlation tensor. - **Parallel correlation function**: \[ \xi(t_1, t_2)=k_{\parallel}^{-2}\left\langle\left(\frac{d}{dt_1}e^{iz(t_1)k_{\parallel}}\right)\left(\frac{d}{dt_2}e^{-iz(t_2)k_{\parallel}}\right)\right\rangle \] - **Integral equation of the vertical diffusion coefficient**: \[ \kappa_{\perp}=\frac{v^2}{3B_0^2}\int d^3k\,P_{xx}(\vec{k})\left(F(\vec{k})+\frac{4}{3}\kappa_{\perp}k_{\perp}^2+\frac{v}{\lambda_{\parallel}}\right)^{-1} \] where \(\lambda_{\parallel}=\frac{3\kappa_{\parallel}}{v}\), \(F(k_{\parallel}, k_{\perp})=\frac{(vk_{\parallel})^2}{3\kappa_{\perp}k_{\perp}^2}\) ### Application prospects The time - dependent description method in this research has broad application prospects in various physical scenarios, including but not limited to: - **Fast particle motion in fusion reactors** - **Cosmic ray propagation in the solar system** - **Particle transport in the interstellar medium** - **Other astrophysical systems** These applications will help to gain a deeper understanding of the behavior of high - energy particles in complex magnetic environments, thereby providing theoretical support for relevant scientific research and technology development.
