Generalizing Hamiltonian Mechanics with Closed Differential Forms

Abstract:Classical Hamiltonian mechanics, characterized by a single conserved Hamiltonian (energy) and symplectic geometry, `hides' other invariants into symmetries of the Hamiltonian or into the kernel of the Poisson tensor. Nambu mechanics aims to generalize classical Hamiltonian mechanics to ideal dynamical systems bearing two Hamiltonians, but its connection to a suitable geometric framework has remained elusive. This work establishes a novel correspondence between generalized Hamiltonian mechanics, defined for systems with a phase space conservation law (invariance of a closed form) and a matter conservation law (invariance of multiple Hamiltonians), and multisymplectic geometry. The key lies in the invertibility of differential forms of degree higher than 2. We demonstrate that the cornerstone theorems of classical Hamiltonian mechanics (Lie-Darboux and Liouville) require reinterpretation within this new framework, reflecting the unique properties of invertibility in multisymplectic geometry. Furthermore, we present two key theorems that solidify the connection: i) any classical Hamiltonian system with two or more invariants is also a generalized Hamiltonian system and ii) given a generalized Hamiltonian system with two or more invariants, there exists a corresponding classical Hamiltonian system on the level set of all but one invariant, with the remaining invariant playing the role of the Hamiltonian function.

Abstract:The six-derivative conformal scalar operator was originally found by Hamada in its critical dimension of spacetime, . We generalize this construction to arbitrary dimensions d by adding new terms cubic in gravitational curvatures and by changing its coefficients of expansion in various curvature terms. The consequences of global scale-invariance and of infinitesimal local conformal transformations are derived for the form of this generalized operator. The system of linear equations for coefficients is solved giving explicitly the conformal Hamada operator in any d . Some singularities in construction for dimensions and are noticed. We also prove a general theorem that a scalar conformal operator with n derivatives in dimensions is impossible to construct. Finally, we compare our explicit construction with the one that uses conformal covariant derivatives and conformal curvature tensors. We present new results for operators built with different orders of conformal covariant derivatives.

Conformally compact and higher conformal Yang-Mills equations

Abstract:On conformally compact manifolds we study Yang-Mills equations, their boundary conditions, formal asymptotics, and Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps. We find that smooth solutions with "magnetic" Dirichlet boundary data are obstructed by a conformally invariant, higher order boundary current. We study the asymptotics of the interior Yang-Mills energy functional and show that the obstructing current is the variation of the conformally invariant coefficient of the first log term in this expansion which is a higher derivative conformally invariant analog of the Yang-Mills energy. The invariant energy is the anomaly for the renormalized interior Yang-Mills functional and its variation gives higher conformal Yang-Mills equations. Global solutions to the magnetic boundary problem determine higher order "electric" Neumann data. This yields the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We also construct conformally invariant, higher transverse derivative boundary operators. Acting on interior connections, they give obstructions to solving the Yang-Mills boundary problem, determine the asymptotics of formal solutions, and yield conformally invariant tensors capturing the (non-local) electric Neumann data. We also characterize a renormalized Yang-Mills action functional that encodes global features analogously to the renormalized volume for Poincaré-Einstein structures.

Abstract:It is expected that conformal symmetry is an emergent property of many systems at their critical point. This imposes strong constraints on the critical behavior of a given system. Taking them into account in theoretical approaches can lead to a better understanding of the critical physics or improve approximation schemes. However, within the framework of the nonperturbative or functional renormalization group and, in particular, of one of its most used approximation schemes, the derivative expansion (DE), nontrivial constraints apply only from third order [usually denoted O(∂4) ], at least in the usual formulation of the DE that includes correlation functions involving only the order parameter. In this work we implement conformal constraints on a generalized DE including composite operators and show that new constraints already appear at second order of the DE [or O(∂2) ]. Exact solution of higher-derivative conformal theory and minimal models

Abstract:I investigate the two-dimensional four-derivative conformal theory that emerges from the Nambu-Goto string after the path-integration over all fields but the metric tensor. Using the method of singular products which accounts for tremendous cancellations in perturbation theory, I show the (intelligent) one-loop approximation to give an exact solution. It is conveniently described through the minimal models where the central charge $c$ in the Kac spectrum depends on the parameters of the four-derivative action. The relation is nonlinear so the domain of physical parameters is mapped onto $c<1$ thus bypassing the KPZ barrier of the Liouville action.

Abstract:We propose a conformal generalization of the reversible Vlasov equation of kinetic plasma dynamics, called conformal kinetic theory. In order to arrive at this formalism, we start with the conformal Hamiltonian dynamics of particles and lift it to the dynamical formulation of the associated kinetic theory. The resulting theory represents a simple example of a geometric pathway from dissipative particle motion to dissipative kinetic motion. We also derive the kinetic equations of a continuum of particles governed by the contact Hamiltonian dynamics, which may be interpreted in the context of relativistic mechanics. Once again we start with the contact Hamiltonian dynamics and lift it to a kinetic theory, called contact kinetic dynamics. Finally, we project the contact kinetic theory to conformal kinetic theory so that they form a geometric hierarchy.

Abstract:We study new classes of metric transformations in the context of scalar-tensor theories, which involve both higher derivatives of the scalar field and derivatives of the metric itself. In general, such transformations are not invertible as they involve derivatives of the metric, which typically leads to instability due to Ostrogradsky ghosts. We show, however, that a certain class of this type of transformations is invertible: We construct new examples of invertible conformal (and also disformal) transformations with higher derivatives. Finally, we make use of these new transformations to construct extended mimetic theories of gravity, and we study their properties in the context of cosmology. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.110.064063 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Conformal mappings serve as useful tools for the determination of universal properties of critical models. Typical applications are subject to a major restriction, namely that the pertinent conformal mapping should lead to a geometry that can be investigated by means of numerical methods such as Monte Carlo simulations. Since conformal mappings of 3-D systems usually lead to curved geometries which are difficult to investigate numerically, most applications have thus far been restricted to 2-D systems. We present a solution of this problem for discrete spin models, by taking the anisotropic or Hamiltonian limit which renders one of the lattice directions continuous, such that the dimensionality in effect reduces by one. Applications to the 3-D Ising and percolation models confirm the predictions obtained from the assumption of conformal invariance, and lead to accurate numerical results for the scaling dimensions.
Conformal Yang-Mills field in arbitrary dimensions

Abstract:Lagrangian of a classical conformal Yang-Mills field in the flat space of even dimension greater than or equal to six involves higher derivatives. We study Lagrangian formulation of the classical conformal Yang-Mills field by using ordinary-derivative (second-derivative) approach. In the framework of the ordinary-derivative approach, a field content, in addition to generic Yang-Mills field, consists of auxiliary vector fields and Stueckelberg scalar fields. For such field content, we obtain a gauge invariant Lagrangian with the conventional second-derivative kinetic terms and the corresponding gauge transformations. The Lagrangian is built in terms of non-abelian field strengths. Structure of a gauge algebra entering gauge symmetries of the conformal Yang-Mills field is described. FFF-vertex of the conformal Yang-Mills field which involves three derivatives is also obtained. For six, eight, and ten dimensions, eliminating the auxiliary vector fields and gauging away the Stueckelberg scalar fields, we obtain a higher-derivative Lagrangian of the conformal Yang-Mills field. For arbitrary dimensions, we demonstrate that all auxiliary fields can be integrated out at non-linear level leading just to a local higher-derivative action which is expressed only in terms of the generic Yang-Mills field.

Abstract:Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids, Ahead of Print. The aim of this work is to establish in great detail the conformable Fourier analysis related to the cosine. We define and analyze the properties of the even conformable translation and the convolution. By adopting the approximation of the identity approach, we study the conformable cosine Fourier transform and its inverse formula. The second theme of this paper is an application of the Fourier analysis developed earlier. We extend the heat representation theory inaugurated by P.C. Rosenbloom and D.V. Widder to the conformable analysis. We construct the solution source and the heat polynomials and constitute with the associated functions a biorthogonal system. We conclude by solving the analytic Cauchy problem related to the conformable heat equation.

Abstract:A gauge theory of solids with conformal symmetry is formulated to model various electromechanical and magnetomechanical coupling phenomena. If the pulled back metric of the current configuration (the right Cauchy-Green tensor) is scaled with a constant, the volumetric part of the Lagrange density changes while the isochoric part remains invariant. However, upon a position dependent scaling, the isochoric part also loses invariance. In order to restore the invariance of the isochoric part, a 1-form compensating field is introduced and the notion of a gauge covariant derivative is utilized to minimally replace the Lagrangian. In view of obvious similarities with the Weyl geometry, the Weyl condition is imposed through the Lagrangian and a minimal coupling is employed so the 1-form could evolve. On deriving the Euler-Lagrange equations based on Hamilton's principle, we observe a close similarity with the governing equations for flexoelectricity under isochoric deformation if the exact part of 1-form is interpreted as the electric field and the anti-exact part as the polarization vector. Next, we model piezoelectricity and electrostriction phenomena by contracting the Weyl condition in various ways. Applying the Hodge decomposition theorem on the 1-form which leads to the curl of a pseudo-vector field and a vector field, we also model magnetomechanical phenomena. Identifying the pseudo-vector field with magnetic potential and the vector part with magnetization, flexomagnetism, piezomagnetism and magnetostriction phenomena under isochoric deformation are also modeled. Finally, we consider an analytical solution of the equations for piezoelectricity and propose a flexoelectric plate model to illustrate on the insightful information that the present approach potentially provides.

Conformal anomalies in 6d 4-derivative theories: a heat-kernel analysis

Abstract:We compute the conformal anomalies for some higher-derivative (non-unitary) 6d Weyl invariant theories using the heat-kernel expansion in the background-field method. To this aim we obtain the general expression for the Seeley-DeWitt coefficient $b_6$ for four-derivative differential operators with background curved geometry and gauge fields, which was known only in flat space so far. We consider four-derivative scalars and abelian vectors as well as three-derivative fermions, confirming the result of the literature obtained via indirect methods. We generalise the vector case by including the curvature coupling $FF \mathrm{Weyl}$.

Abstract:We find, at the Lagrangian off-shell level, the explicit equivalence transformation which relates the conformal mechanics of De Alfaro, Fubini and Furlan to the conformal mechanics describing the radial motion of the charged massive particle in the Bertotti–Robinson AdS2×S2 background. Thus we demonstrate the classical equivalence of these two systems which are usually regarded as essentially different “old” and “new” conformal mechanics models. We also construct a similar transformation for N=2, SU(1,1|1) superconformal mechanics in N=2 superfield formulation. Performing this transformation in the action of the N=2 superconformal mechanics, we find an off-shell superfield action of N=2 superextension of Bertotti–Robinson particle. Such an action has not been given before. We show its on-shell equivalence to the AdS2 superparticle action derived from the spontaneous partial breaking of SU(1,1|1) superconformal symmetry treated as the N=2 AdS2 supersymmetry.

Abstract:We establish the procedure to derive from an action-based variational principle the classical equations of motion in Hamiltonian phase space of a particle subject to general position and velocity dependent non-holonomic equality constraints. Key to the procedure is our introduction of Flannery brackets, which generalize Poisson brackets. We conjecture on some implications, including the possibility of replacing Poisson brackets with Flannery brackets in Dirac's brackets to provide the quantization procedure for general non-holonomic equality constraint systems.

Abstract:We establish several relationships between the non-relativistic conformal symmetries of Newton-Cartan geometry and the Schrödinger equation. In particular we discuss the algebra $\mathfrak{sch}(d)$ of vector fields conformally-preserving a flat Newton-Cartan spacetime, and we prove that its curved generalisation generates the symmetry group of the covariant Schrödinger equation coupled to a Newtonian potential and generalised Coriolis force. We provide intrinsic Newton-Cartan definitions of Killing tensors and conformal Schrödinger-Killing tensors, and we discuss their respective links to conserved quantities and to the higher symmetries of the Schrödinger equation. Finally we consider the role of conformal symmetries in Newtonian twistor theory, where the infinite-dimensional algebra of holomorphic vector fields on twistor space corresponds to the symmetry algebra $\mathfrak{cnc}(3)$ on the Newton-Cartan spacetime.

Abstract:Currently, dynamics of a massive macroparticle is given by classical analytical mechanics (CM), while that of a massive micro one is given by quantum mechanics (QM). We propose a mechanics effective for both: We transform, under coordinate transformation, the covariant tensor of order two underlying the kinetic energy term of the Hamilton-Jacobi (H-J) eq. of CM, not with the action of the diffeomorphism group, but with an action of an extended diffeomorphism group. Then, the H-J eq., a first-order partial differential eq., is modified to a third-order one. The Euler-Lagrange eq. of CM, a second-order ordinary differential eq., related to the H-J eq. through action integral of the least action principle is accordingly modified to a fourth-order one. We thus obtain a mechanics which, because of the higher-order eqs., accommodates phenomena corresponding to quantum phenomena. Energy of a particle in a confining potential is quantized to the same values as those of QM. Particle distribution in an ensemble disagrees with that of QM, but agrees with experiments within experimental uncertainty. The mechanics therefore is a testable alternative to QM.

Physical Running in Conformal Gravity and Higher Derivative Scalars

Abstract:We compute the physical running of a general higher derivative scalar coupled to a nondynamical metric and of higher derivative Weyl invariant gravity with a dynamical metric in four dimensions. In both cases, we find that the physical running differs from the $\mu$-running of dimensional regularization because of infrared divergences which are present in amplitudes also at large momenta, differently from what happens in standard two derivative theories. We use the higher derivative scalar as a toy-model to elaborate on the properties of the conformal limit in relation to the trace anomaly. The physical running of higher derivative Weyl gravity, while different from the $\mu$-running, remains asymptotically free, suggesting that the model is a viable completion of Einstein's gravity, at least from the point of view of its renormalization group properties.
