Abstract:Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) protocol was proposed to remove all the detector side channel attacks, while its security relies on the trusted encoding systems. Here we propose a one-sided MDI-QKD (1SMDI-QKD) protocol, which enjoys detection loophole-free advantage, and at the same time weakens the state preparation assumption in MDI-QKD. The 1SMDI-QKD can be regarded as a modified MDI-QKD, in which Bob's encoding system is trusted, while Alice's is uncharacterized. For the practical implementation, we also provide a scheme by utilizing coherent light source with an analytical two decoy state estimation method. Simulation with realistic experimental parameters shows that the protocol has a promising performance, and thus can be applied to practical QKD applications.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to weaken the assumptions about state preparation while maintaining the advantage of being free from detection loopholes in quantum key distribution (QKD). Specifically, although the traditional measurement - device - independent quantum key distribution (MDI - QKD) protocol can close all types of detection side - channel attacks, its security depends on a trusted encoding system. However, in practical applications, the imperfection of the encoding system may lead to various side - channel attacks, such as fake - state attacks, time - shift attacks, phase - remapping attacks, detector - blinding attacks, etc. To solve this problem, the author proposes the one - sided measurement - device - independent quantum key distribution (1SMDI - QKD) protocol. In this protocol, Bob's encoding system is considered to be trusted, while Alice's encoding system is uncharacterized. In this way, 1SMDI - QKD not only maintains the advantage of being free from detection loopholes, but also weakens the strict requirements for state preparation in MDI - QKD. In addition, in order to achieve practical applications, the author also provides a scheme using a coherent light source and an analytical double - decoy - state estimation method. By simulating experimental parameters, the author shows that this protocol has good performance and can be applied to practical QKD applications. Overall, the 1SMDI - QKD protocol can still ensure high security and a long communication distance while reducing security assumptions, thus providing new ideas for realizing more practical QKD systems.
