Abstract:A new family of locking-free finite elements for shear deformable Reissner-Mindlin plates is presented. The elements are based on the "tangential-displacement normal-normal-stress" formulation of elasticity. In this formulation, the bending moments are treated as separate unknowns. The degrees of freedom for the plate element are the nodal values of the deflection, tangential components of the rotations and normal-normal components of the bending strain. Contrary to other plate bending elements, no special treatment for the shear term such as reduced integration is necessary. The elements attain an optimal order of convergence.
Numerical Analysis
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to solve the shear locking problem in the Reissner - Mindlin plate model. Specifically, when the thickness of the plate becomes very small, directly discretizing the equations will cause the shear strain term to dominate, making the numerical solution inaccurate or completely invalid. This phenomenon is called shear locking. To solve this problem, the author proposes a new finite - element method - the TDNNS (Tangential - Displacement Normal - Normal - Stress) method. This method is based on the "tangential displacement - normal normal stress" formula and treats the bending moment as an independent variable. By choosing appropriate spaces for displacement, rotation and bending moment, it is ensured that shear locking will not occur when the plate thickness approaches zero, and the optimal convergence order can be achieved. The following are the main features of this method: 1. **New finite - element family**: This method introduces a new finite - element family. These elements are based on the TDNNS formula, in which the bending moment is treated as an independent variable. 2. **Avoidance of shear locking**: Unlike traditional finite - element methods, the TDNNS method does not require special treatment of the shear term (such as reduced integration), thus avoiding the shear - locking problem. 3. **Optimal convergence order**: The proposed elements can achieve the optimal convergence order, which has been verified in the numerical results. 4. **Theoretical analysis**: The paper provides a detailed theoretical analysis, proving the existence, uniqueness and stability of this method for any positive thickness and in the limit case (i.e., when the thickness approaches zero). In conclusion, the main contribution of this paper is to propose a new finite - element method, which effectively solves the shear - locking problem in the Reissner - Mindlin plate model and ensures the accuracy and stability of the numerical solution.
