Abstract:Ramanujan, in his lost notebook, gave an interesting identity, which generates infinite families of solutions to Euler's Diophantine equation $A^3 + B^3 = C^3 + D^3$. In this paper, we produce a few infinite families of solutions to the aforementioned Diophantine equation as well as for the Diophantine equation $A^4 + B^4 + C^4 + D^4 + E^4 = F^4$ in the spirit of Ramanujan.

Abstract:In this paper we present a new method of solving the classical diophantine equation $A^4+B^4=C^4+D^4$. Two methods of solving this equation, given by Euler, yield parametric solutions given by polynomials of degrees 7 and 13. Several other parametric solutions are now known, and with the exception of one solution of degree 11, all the published solutions are of degrees $6n+1$ for some integer $n$. The method described in this paper yields new parametric solutions of degrees 21, 39 and 75, that is, degrees that are expressible as $6n+3$.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler's conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system n=a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1, a_1a_2⋯ a_s-1(a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1)=b^s has solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+,i=1,2,…,s-1,s≥ 3. By using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ for s=3, but for s=4 it has infinitely many solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ and for s≥ 5 there are infinitely many polynomial solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ[t_1,t_2,…,t_s-3] with positive value satisfying this Diophantine system.

Abstract:Let $a,b\in\mathbb N=\{0,1,2,\ldots\}$ and $\lambda\in\{2,3\}$. We show that $4^a(4b+1)$ can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with $x,y,z,w\in\mathbb N$ such that $x+2y+\lambda z$ is a positive square. We also pose some open conjectures; for example, we conjecture that any positive odd integer can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with $x,y,z,w\in\mathbb N$ such that $x+2y+3z$ is a positive power of two.

Abstract:In this note we consider the title Diophantine equation from both theoretical as well as experimental point of view. In particular, we prove that for $k=4, 6$ and each choice of the signs our equation has infinitely many co-prime positive integer solutions. For $k=5, 7$ and all choices of the signs we computed all co-prime positive integer solutions $(x, y, a, b)$ satisfying the condition $\op{max}\{a, b\}\leq 50000$.

Abstract:We obtain best possible results for the number of coprime positive integer solutions, along with some effectivity, of the equation in the title when $a$ is a positive integer, $b=p^{m}$ or $b=4p^{m}$ where $m$ is a non-negative integer, $p$ is prime and $x^{2}- \left( a^{2}+b \right) y^{2}=-4$ has an integer solution. We prove our results by bounding the number of distinct squares in certain binary recurrence sequences, including those associated with such equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a new method answer to a recent conjecture proposed by Budaghyan, Calderini, Carlet, Davidova and Kaleyski about the equation $x^d+(x+1)^d=b$ in $\mathbb{F}_{q^4}$, where $n$ is a positive integer, $q=2^n$ and $d=q^3+q^2+q-1$. In particular, we directly determine the differential spectrum of this power function $x^d$ using methods different from those in the literature. Compared with the methods in the literature, our method is more direct and simple.

Abstract:Let $f(x)=x^4+ax^3+d\in {\mathbb Z}[x]$, where $ad\ne 0$. Let $C_n$ denote the cyclic group of order $n$, $D_4$ the dihedral group of order 8, and $A_4$ the alternating group of order 12. Assuming that $f(x)$ is monogenic, we give necessary and sufficient conditions involving only $a$ and $d$ to determine the Galois group $G$ of $f(x)$ over ${\mathbb Q}$. In particular, we show that $G=D_4$ if and only if $(a,d)=(\pm 2,2)$, and that $G\not \in \{C_4,C_2\times C_2\}$. Furthermore, we prove that $f(x)$ is monogenic with $G=A_4$ if and only if $a=4k$ and $d=27k^4+1$, where $k\ne 0$ is an integer such that $27k^4+1$ is squarefree. This article extends previous work of the authors on the monogenicity of quartic polynomials and their Galois groups.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.
An asymptotic formula with power-saving error term for counting prime solutions to a binary additive problem

Abstract:We obtain an asymptotic formula with a power-saving error term for counting the integer points $(a,b,c,d)$ in an expanding box $[-X,X]^4$ that satisfy the determinant equation $x_1x_2-x_3x_4=r$ for $r \neq 0$ with two of entries to be prime. The method involves the Poisson summation formula and the estimation for the average of the sums of the Kloosterman fractions over primes $p$.

Abstract:We study the Frobenius problem: given relatively prime positive integers $a_1,...,a_d$, find the largest value of t (the Frobenius number) such that $\sum_{k=1}^d m_k a_k = t$ has no solution in nonnegative integers $m_1,...,m_d$. Based on empirical data, we conjecture that except for some special cases the Frobenius number can be bounded from above by $\sqrt{a_1 a_2 a_3}^{5/4} - a_1 - a_2 - a_3$.

Abstract:Let p be an odd prime. We show that each solution of the system of congruence equations x12+x22+x32+x42≡0(modp) and x1+x2+x3+x4≡0(modp) corresponds to precisely four solutions of the system of Diophantine equations x12+x22+x32+x42=p2 and x1+x2+x3+x4=p that are pairwise orthogonal over Z, partially answering a conjecture proposed in Wang et al. [10]. The result was obtained by counting the number of solutions of both equations using Gaussian sum and modular forms, and the classical Cayley transformation.

Abstract:We discuss finding large integer solutions of $d=2x^3+y^3+z^3$ by using Elsenhans and Jahnel's adaptation of Elkies' LLL-reduction method. We find 28 first solutions for $|d|<10000$.

Abstract:It is conjectured that for any fixed relatively prime positive integers $a,b$ and $c$ all greater than 1 there is at most one solution to the equation $a^x+b^y=c^z$ in positive integers $x,y$ and $z$, except for specific cases. We develop the methods in our previous work which rely on a variety from Baker's theory and thoroughly study the conjecture for cases where $c$ is small relative to $a$ or $b$. Using restrictions derived under which there is more than one solution to the equation, we obtain a number of finiteness results on the conjecture, which in particular enables us to find some new values of $c$ being presumably infinitely many such that for each such $c$ the conjecture holds true except for only finitely many pairs of $a$ and $b$. Most importantly we prove that if $c=13$ then the equation has at most one solution, except for $(a,b)=(3,10)$ or $(10,3)$ which exactly gives two solutions. Further our study with the help of Schmidt Subspace Theorem among others brings strong contributions to the study of Pillai's type Diophantine equations, which includes a general and satisfactory result on a well-known conjecture of M. Bennett on the equation $a^x-b^y=c$ for any fixed positive integers $a,b$ and $c$ with both $a$ and $b$ greater than 1. Some conditional results are presented under the $abc$-conjecture as well.

Abstract:This paper contributes to the conjecture of R. Scott and R. Styer which asserts that for any fixed relatively prime positive integers $a,b$ and $c$ greater than 1 there is at most one solution to the equation $a^x+b^y=c^z$ in positive integers $x,y$ and $z$, except for specific cases. The fundamental result proves the conjecture under some congruence condition modulo $c$ on $a$ and $b$. As applications the conjecture is confirmed to be true if $c$ takes some small values including the Fermat primes found so far, and this particularly provides an analytic proof of the celebrated theorem of Scott [R. Scott, On the equations $p^x-b^y=c$ and $a^x+b^y=c^z$, J. Number Theory 44(1993), 153-165] solving the conjecture for $c=2$ in a purely algebraic manner. The method can be generalized for smaller modulus cases, and it turns out that the conjecture holds true for infinitely many specific values of $c$ not being perfect powers. The main novelty is to apply a special type of the $p$-adic analogue to Baker's theory on linear forms in logarithms via a certain divisibility relation arising from the existence of two hypothetical solutions to the equation. The other tools include Baker's theory in the complex case and its non-Archimedean analogue for number fields together with various elementary arguments through rational and quadratic numbers, and extensive computation.
On primitive integer solutions of the Diophantine equation $t^2=G(x,y,z)$ and related results

Abstract:In this paper we investigate Diophantine equations of the form $T^2=G(\overline{X}),\; \overline{X}=(X_{1},\ldots,X_{m})$, where $m=3$ or $m=4$ and $G$ is specific homogenous quintic form. First, we prove that if $F(x,y,z)=x^2+y^2+az^2+bxy+cyz+dxz\in\Z[x,y,z]$ and $(b-2,4a-d^2,d)\neq (0,0,0)$, then the Diophantine equation $t^2=nxyzF(x,y,z)$ has solution in polynomials $x, y, z, t$ with integer coefficients, without polynomial common factor of positive degree. In case $a=d=0, b=2$ we prove that there are infinitely many primitive integer solutions of the Diophantine equation under consideration. As an application of our result we prove that for each $n\in\Q\setminus\{0\}$ the Diophantine equation \begin{equation*} T^2=n(X_{1}^5+X_{2}^5+X_{3}^5+X_{4}^5) \end{equation*} has a solution in co-prime (non-homogenous) polynomials in two variables with integer coefficients. We also present a method which sometimes allow us to prove the existence of primitive integers solutions of more general quintic Diophantine equation of the form $T^2=aX_{1}^5+bX_{2}^5+cX_{3}^5+dX_{4}^5$, where $a, b, c, d\in\Z$. In particular, we prove that for each $m, n\in\Z\setminus\{0\},$ the Diophantine equation \begin{equation*} T^2=m(X_{1}^5-X_{2}^5)+n^2(X_{3}^5-X_{4}^5) \end{equation*} has a solution in polynomials which are co-prime over $\Z[t]$. Moreover, we show how modification of the presented method can be used in order to prove that for each $n\in\Q\setminus\{0\}$, the Diophantine equation \begin{equation*} t^2=n(X_{1}^5+X_{2}^5-2X_{3}^5) \end{equation*} has a solution in polynomials which are co-prime over $\Z[t]$.

Abstract:The pentagonal numbers are the integers given by$ p_5(n) = n(3n-1)/2\ (n = 0,1,2,\ldots) $.Let $ (b,c,d) $ be one of the triples $ (1,1,2),(1,2,3),(1,2,6) $ and $ (2,3,4) $.We show that each $ n = 0,1,2,\ldots $ can be written as $ w+bx+cy+dz $ with $ w,x,y,z $ pentagonal numbers, which was first conjectured by Z.-W. Sun in 2016. In particular, any nonnegative integeris a sum of five pentagonal numbers two of which are equal; this refines a classical resultof Cauchy claimed by Fermat.

Abstract:In this paper we establish some new results similar to Lagrange's four-square theorem. For example, we prove that any integer $n>1$ can be written $w(5w+1)/2+x(5x+1)/2+y(5y+1)/2+z(5z+1)/2$ with $w,x,y,z\in\mathbb Z$. Here we state two general results: (1) If $a$ and $b$ are odd integers with $a>0$, $b>-a$ and $\gcd(a,b)=1$, then all sufficient large integers can be written as $$\frac{w(aw+b)}2+\frac{x(ax+b)}2+\frac{y(ay+b)}2+\frac{z(az+b)}2$$ with $w,x,y,z$ nonnegative integers. (2) If $a$ and $b$ are integers with $a>0$, $b>-a$, $2\mid a$ and $\gcd(a,b)=1$, then all sufficient large integers can be written as $$w(aw+b)+x(ax+b)+y(ay+b)+z(az+b)$$ with $w,x,y,z$ nonnegative integers.

Abstract:Let $m\ge3$ be an integer. The polygonal numbers of order $m+2$ are given by $p_{m+2}(n)=m\binom n2+n$ $(n=0,1,2,\ldots)$. A famous claim of Fermat proved by Cauchy asserts that each nonnegative integer is the sum of $m+2$ polygonal numbers of order $m+2$. For $(a,b)=(1,1),(2,2),(1,3),(2,4)$, we study whether any sufficiently large integer can be expressed as $$p_{m+2}(x_1) + p_{m+2}(x_2) + ap_{m+2}(x_3) + bp_{m+2}(x_4)$$ with $x_1,x_2,x_3,x_4$ nonnegative integers. We show that the answer is positive if $(a,b)\in\{(1,3),(2,4)\}$, or $(a,b)=(1,1)\ \&\ 4\mid m$, or $(a,b)=(2,2)\ \&\ m\not\equiv 2\pmod 4$. In particular, we confirm a conjecture of Z.-W. Sun which states that any natural number can be written as $p_6(x_1) + p_6(x_2) + 2p_6(x_3) + 4p_6(x_4)$ with $x_1,x_2,x_3,x_4$ nonnegative integers.
