Abstract:Let $\mathcal{M}_{0,n+1}$ be the moduli space of genus zero Riemann surfaces with $n+1$ marked points. In this paper we compute $H_*^{\Sigma_n}(\mathcal{M}_{0,n+1};\mathbb{F}_p)$ and $H_*^{\Sigma_n}(\mathcal{M}_{0,n+1};\mathbb{F}_p(\pm 1))$ for any $n\in\mathbb{N}$ and any prime $p$, where $\mathbb{F}_p(\pm 1)$ denotes the sign representation of the symmetric group $\Sigma_n$. The interest in these homology groups is twofold: on the one hand classes in these equivariant homology groups parametrize homology operations for gravity algebras. On the other hand the homotopy quotient $(\mathcal{M}_{0,n+1})_{\Sigma_n}$ is a model for the classifying space for $B_n/Z(B_n)$, the quotient of the braid group $B_n$ by its center.

Abstract:Let G be an almost linear Nash group, namely, a Nash group that admits a Nash homomorphism with finite kernel to some GLk(R). A homology theory (the Schwartz homology) is established for the category of smooth Fréchet representations of G of moderate growth. Frobenius reciprocity and Shapiro's lemma are proved in this category. As an application, we give a criterion for automatic extensions of Schwartz homologies of Schwartz sections of a tempered G-vector bundle.

Abstract:Recent work of Chen He has determined through GKM methods the Borel equivariant cohomology with rational coefficients of the isotropy action on a real Grassmannian and an real oriented Grassmannian through GKM methods. In this expository note, we propound a less involved approach, due essentially to Vitali Kapovitch, to computing equivariant cohomology rings $H^*_K(G/H)$ for $G,K,H$ connected Lie groups, and apply it to recover the equivariant cohomology of the Grassmannians. The bulk is setup and commentary; once one believes in the model, the proof itself is under a page.

Abstract:We provide an explicit computation of the cohomology groups (with untwisted coefficients) of semidirect products of the form $\mathbb{Z}^n\rtimes \mathbb{Z}/m$ with $m$ free of squares, by means of formulas that only depend on $n$, $m$ and the action of $\mathbb{Z}/m$ on $\mathbb{Z}^n$. We want to highlight the fact that we are not impossing any conditions on the $\mathbb{Z}/m$-action on $\mathbb{Z}^n$, and as far as we know our formulas are the first in the literature in this generality. This generalizes previous computations of Lück-Davis and Adem-Ge-Pan-Petrosyan. In order to show that our formulas are usable, we develop a concrete example of the form $\mathbb{Z}^5\rtimes \mathbb{Z}/6$ where its cohomology groups are described in full detail.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a closed formula for the cohomology of real Grassmannians. To achieve this, we use a theory of stratified spaces to compute the differentials in a chain complex that computes the cohomology. Specifically, we organize Schubert cells as a conically smooth stratified space in the sense of Ayala, Francis, Tanaka; the links therein yield the sought differentials, using methods in differential topology. Further, we identify the isomorphism type of this chain complex and we use this result to provide a closed formula for the additive structure of the cohomology of real Grassmannians with arbitrary coefficients.

Abstract:Given a finite group $G$ acting on a surface $S$, the centralizer of G in the mapping class group $\textrm{Mod}(S)$ has a natural representation given by its action on the homology $H_1(S; \mathbb{Q})$. We consider the question of whether this representation has arithmetic image. Several authors have given positive and negative answers to this question. We give a complete answer when S has genus at most 3.

Abstract:For $n \geq 2$, the $n$-th curvature set of a metric space $X$ is the set consisting of all $n$-by-$n$ distance matrices of $n$ points sampled from $X$. Curvature sets can be regarded as a geometric analogue of configuration spaces. In this paper we carry out a geometric and topological study of the curvature sets of the unit circle $\mathbb{S}^1$ equipped with the geodesic metric. Via an inductive argument we compute the homology groups of all curvature sets of $\mathbb{S}^1$. We also construct an abstract simplicial complex, called the $n$-th State Complex, whose geometric realization is homeomorphic to the $n$-th Curvature Set of $\mathbb{S}^1$.

A geometric computation of cohomotopy groups in co-degree one

Abstract:Using geometric arguments, we compute the group of homotopy classes of maps from a closed $(n+1)$-dimensional manifold to the $n$-sphere for $n \geq 3$. Our work extends results from Kirby, Melvin and Teichner for closed oriented 4-manifolds and from Konstantis for closed $(n+1)$-dimensional spin manifolds, considering possibly non-orientable and non-spinnable manifolds. In the process, we introduce two types of manifolds that generalize the notion of odd and even 4-manifolds. Furthermore, for the case that $n \geq 4$, we discuss applications for rank $n$ spin vector bundles and obtain a refinement of the Euler class in the cohomotopy group that fully obstructs the existence of a non-vanishing section.

Abstract:We compute the homology of the matching complex $M(\Gamma)$, where $\Gamma$ is the complete hypergraph on $n\geq 2$ vertices, and analyse the $S_n$-representations carried by this homology. These results are achieved using standard techniques in combinatorial topology, such as the theory of shellings. We then broaden the scope to the larger class of fibre-closed families of simplicial complexes and consider these through the lens of representation stability. This allows us to prove a number of results of an asymptotic nature, such as an analysis of the growth of Betti numbers and the kinds of irreducible $S_n$-representations that appear.

Abstract:We study the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-homology groups of the orbit space $X_n = G_{n,2}/T^n$ for the canonical action of the compact torus $T^n$ on a complex Grassmann manifold $G_{n,2}$. Our starting point is the model $(U_n, p_n)$ for $X_n$ constructed by Buchstaber and Terzić (2020), where $U_n = \Delta _{n,2}\times \mathcal{F}_{n}$ for a hypersimplex $\Delta_{n,2}$ and an universal space of parameters $\mathcal{F}_{n}$ defined in Buchstaber and Terzić (2019), (2020). It is proved by Buchstaber and Terzić (2021) that $\mathcal{F}_{n}$ is diffeomorphic to the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$ of stable $n$-pointed genus zero curves. We exploit the results from Keel (1992) and Ceyhan (2009) on homology groups of $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$ and express them in terms of the stratification of $\mathcal{F}_{n}$ which are incorporated in the model $(U_n, p_n)$. In the result we provide the description of cycles in $X_n$, inductively on $ n. $ We obtain as well explicit formulas for $\mathbb{Z}_2$-homology groups for $X_5$ and $X_6$. The results for $X_5$ recover by different method the results from Buchstaber and Terzić (2021) and Süss (2020). The results for $X_6$ we consider to be new.

Abstract:Let $\nu=(n_1,\ldots, n_s), s\ge 2,$ be a sequence of positive integers and let $n=\sum_{1\le j\le s}n_j$. Let $\mathbb CG(\nu)=U(n)/(U(n_1)\times \cdots\times U(n_s))$ be the complex flag manifold. Denote by $P(m,\nu)=P(\mathbb S^m,\mathbb CG(\nu))$ the generalized Dold manifold $\mathbb S^m\times \mathbb CG(\nu)/\langle \theta\rangle $ where $\theta=\alpha\times \sigma$ with $\alpha:\mathbb S^m\to \mathbb S^m$ being the antipodal map and $\sigma:\mathbb CG(\nu)\to \mathbb CG(\nu)$, the complex conjugation. The manifold $P(m,\nu)$ has the structure of a smooth $\mathbb CG(\nu)$-bundle over the real projective space $\mathbb RP^m.$ We determine the additive structure of $H^*(P(m,\nu);R)$ when $R=\mathbb Z$ and its ring structure when $R$ is a commutative ring in which $2$ is invertible. As an application, we determine the additive structure of $K(P(m,\nu))$ almost completely and also obtain partial results on its ring structure. The results for the singular homology are obtained for generalized Dold spaces $P(S,X)=S\times X/\langle \theta\rangle$, where $\theta=\alpha\times \sigma$, $\alpha:S\to S$ is a fixed point free involution and $\sigma:X\to X$ is an involution with $\mathrm{Fix}(\sigma)\ne \emptyset,$ for a much wider class of spaces $S$ and $X$.

Abstract:For $g\ge 2$ and $n\ge 0$, let $\mathcal{H}_{g,n}\subset \mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ denote the complex moduli stack of $n$-marked smooth hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$. A normal crossings compactification of this space is provided by the theory of pointed admissible $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-covers. We explicitly determine the resulting dual complex, and we use this to define a graph complex which computes the weight zero compactly supported cohomology of $\mathcal{H}_{g, n}$. Using this graph complex, we give a sum-over-graphs formula for the $S_n$-equivariant weight zero compactly supported Euler characteristic of $\mathcal{H}_{g, n}$. This formula allows for the computer-aided calculation, for each $g\le 7$, of the generating function $\mathsf{h}_g$ for these equivariant Euler characteristics for all $n$. More generally, we determine the dual complex of the boundary in any moduli space of pointed admissible $G$-covers of genus zero curves, when $G$ is abelian, as a symmetric $\Delta$-complex. We use these complexes to generalize our formula for $\mathsf{h}_g$ to moduli spaces of $n$-pointed smooth abelian covers of genus zero curves.

The $n+3$, $n+4$ dimensional homotopy groups of $\mathbf{A}_n^2$-complexes

Abstract:In this paper, we calculate the $n+3$, $n+4$ dimensional homotopy groups of indecomposable $\mathbf{A}_n^2$-complexes after localization at 2. This job is seen as a sequel to P.J. Hilton's work on the $n+1,n+2$ dimensional homotopy groups of $\mathbf{A}_n^2$-complexes (1950-1951). The main technique used is analysing the homotopy property of $J(X,A)$, defined by B. Gray for a CW-pair $(X,A)$, which is homotopy equivalent to the homotopy fibre of the pinch map $X\cup CA\rightarrow \Sigma A$. By the way, the results of these homotopy groups have been used to make progress on recent popular topic about the homotopy decomposition of the (multiple) suspension of oriented closed manifolds.

On some topological equivalences for moduli spaces of $G$-bundles

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g \geq 3$, and let $G$ be a nontrivial connected reductive affine algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$. Examining the moduli spaces of regularly stable $G$-Higgs bundles and holomorphic $G$-connections with a fixed topological type $d\in \pi_1(G)$ over $X$, we establish that the $k$-th homotopy groups of these two moduli spaces are isomorphic for $k \leq 2g-4$. We also prove that the mixed Hodge structures on the rational cohomology groups of these two moduli spaces are pure and isomorphic. Lastly, we explicitly describe the homotopy groups of the moduli space of $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{C})$-connections over $X$.

Abstract:We prove that the rational cohomology group $H^{11}(\bar{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n})$ vanishes unless $g = 1$ and $n \geq 11$. We show furthermore that $H^k(\bar{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n})$ is pure Hodge-Tate for all even $k \leq 12$ and deduce that $\# \bar{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}(\mathbb{F}_q)$ is surprisingly well approximated by a polynomial in $q$. In addition, we use $H^{11}(\bar{\mathcal{M}}_{1,11})$ and its image under Gysin push-forward for tautological maps to produce many new examples of moduli spaces of stable curves with nonvanishing odd cohomology and non-tautological algebraic cycle classes in Chow cohomology.

On the rational cohomology of spin hyperelliptic mapping class groups

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak{G}$ be the subgroup $\mathfrak{S}_{n-q} \times \mathfrak{S}_{q}$ of the $n$-th symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$ for $n-q \geq q$. In this paper, we study the $\mathfrak{G}$-invariant part of the rational cohomology group of the pure braid group $P_{n}$. The invariant part includes the rational cohomology of a spin hyperelliptic mapping class group of genus $g$ as a subalgebra when $n=2g+2$, denoted by $H^*(P_{n})^{\mathfrak{G}}$. Based on the study of Lehrer-Solomon, we prove that they are independent of $n$ and $q$ in degree $*\leq q-1$. We also give a formula to calculate the dimension of $H^*(P_{n})^{\mathfrak{G}}$ and calculate it in all degree for $q\leq 3$.
