Abstract:This paper deals with the semilinear Rayleigh–Stokes equation with the fractional derivative in time of order , which can be used to model anomalous diffusion in viscoelastic fluids. An operator family related to this problem is defined, and its regularity properties are investigated. We firstly give the concept of the mild solutions in terms of the operator family and then obtain the existence of global mild solutions by means of fixed point technique. Moreover, the existence and regularity of classical solutions are given.

Abstract:In this article we investigate the solution of the steady-state fractional diffusion equation on a bounded domain in $\real^{1}$. From an analysis of the underlying model problem, we postulate that the fractional diffusion operator in the modeling equations is neither the Riemann-Liouville nor the Caputo fractional differential operators. We then find a closed form expression for the kernel of the fractional diffusion operator which, in most cases, determines the regularity of the solution. Next we establish that the Jacobi polynomials are pseudo eigenfunctions for the fractional diffusion operator. A spectral type approximation method for the solution of the steady-state fractional diffusion equation is then proposed and studied.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to describing a linear diffusion problem involving fractional-in-time derivatives and self-adjoint integro-differential space operators posed in bounded domains. One main concern of our paper is to deal with singular boundary data which are typical of fractional diffusion operators in space, and the other one is the consideration of the fractional-in-time Caputo and Riemann--Liouville derivatives in a unified way. We first construct classical solutions of our problems using the spectral theory and discussing the corresponding fractional-in-time ordinary differential equations. We take advantage of the duality between these fractional-in-time derivatives to introduce the notion of weak-dual solution for weighted-integrable data. As the main result of the paper, we prove the well-posedness of the initial and boundary-value problems in this sense.

Abstract:In this paper we give a survey of results on various analytical aspects of time fractional diffusion equations. We describe the approach via abstract Volterra equations and collect results on strong solutions in the $L_p$ sense. We further discuss the concept of weak solutions for equations with rough coefficients and give an account of recent developments towards a De Giorgi-Nash-Moser theory for such equations. The last part summarizes recent results on the long-time behaviour of solutions, which turns out to be significantly different from that in the heat equation case.

Abstract:We study the existence and H & ouml;lder regularity of solutions for fractional evolution equations of order alpha is an element of(1,2)$\alpha \in (1,2)$. By means of an analytic resolvent, we construct an interpolation space, which can effectively lower the regularity of initial data. By virtue of the interpolation space and some properties of the analytic resolvent, we derive the existence and H & ouml;lder regularity of strict solutions for an inhomogeneous problem, as well as the existence and H & ouml;lder regularity of a nonlinear problem.

Abstract:In the work presented in this paper, a study for a class of space-time fractional Langevin diffusion equations with two different time-fractional derivatives and a spatial fractional Laplacian was conducted. Firstly, we investigate the well-posedness and regularity of the mild solutions for a nonlocal problem by using several distinctly different approaches in the following three cases with the source term f: if f is a linear source term, then some properties of the Mittag-Leffler functions, the techniques of Laplace transform and eigenfunctions expansion will be utilized to obtain our main results in this case; if f is a globally Lipschitz and uniformly bounded nonlinear source term, then the method in this case is based on the Picard approximation; if f is a locally Lipschitz and uniformly bounded nonlinear function, then the Banach fixed point theorem will be the main tool for dealing with this case. Next, for the corresponding Cauchy problem, the issues on the continuation, global existence or finite-time blowup of mild solutions are also discussed.

Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a Cauchy problem of one-dimensional time fractional diffusion equation for determining the Cauchy data at x=1 from the Cauchy data at x=0. Based on the separation of variables and Duhamel's principle, we transform the Cauchy problem into a first kind Volterra integral equation with the Neumann data as an unknown function and then show the ill-posedness of problem. Further, we use a boundary element method combined with a generalized Tikhonov regularization to solve the first kind integral equation. The generalized cross validation choice rule is applied to find a suitable regularization parameter. Three numerical examples are provided to show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this work, the solution regularity of a variable-order time-fractional diffusion equation with Mittag-Leffler kernel is analyzed and the uniqueness of determining the variable fractional order based on the observations of the solutions over a small time-space interval is proved. The main difficulty we overcome lies in the technical analysis of the variable-order Mittag-Leffler kernel and its derivatives via special functions, and the proved results provide theoretical supports for the applications of the proposed model in both the direct and inverse manner. Furthermore, the derived methods could be applied to analyze the analogous direct and inverse problems involving the variable-order Caputo–Fabrizio fractional operators.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions for a class of fractional superdiffusion equations with initial-boundary conditions. For a multidimensional fractional drift superdiffusion equation, we just consider the simplest case with divergence-free drift velocity $u \in L^{2}(\Omega)$ only depending on the spatial variable x. Finally, exploiting the Schauder fixed point theorem combined with the Arzelà-Ascoli compactness theorem, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions in the standard Banach space $C([0,T]; H_{0}^{1}(\Omega))$ for a class of fractional superdiffusion equations.

Abstract:The evolution process of fractional order describes some phenomenon of anomalous diffusion and transport dynamics in complex system. The equation containing fractional derivatives provides a suitable mathematical model for describing such a process. The initial boundary value problem is hard to solve due to the nonlocal property of the fractional order derivative. We consider a final value problem in a bounded domain for fractional evolution process with respect to time, which means to recover the initial state for some slow diffusion process from its present status. For this ill-posed problem, we construct a regularizing solution using quasi-reversible method. The well-posedness of the regularizing solution as well as the convergence property is rigorously analyzed. The advantage of the proposed scheme is that the regularizing solution is of the explicit analytic solution and therefore is easy to be implemented. Numerical examples are presented to show the validity of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider an inverse source problem for fractional diffusion equation with Riemann–Liouville derivative. The considered problem is ill-posed, i.e., the solution does not depend continuously on the given data. We assume the solutions of the equation can be represented by a Fourier series. The Tikhonov regularization method is applied to solve this problem. In the theoretical results, the convergence estimates between the exact solutions and the regularized solutions are presented under a priori and a posteriori parameter choice rules.

Abstract:We consider an evolution equation involving the fractional powers, of order $s \in (0,1)$, of a symmetric and uniformly elliptic second order operator and Caputo fractional time derivative of order $\gamma \in (1,2]$. Since it has been shown useful for the design of numerical techniques for related problems, we also consider a quasi--stationary elliptic problem that comes from the realization of the spatial fractional diffusion as the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for a nonuniformly elliptic problem posed on a semi--infinite cylinder. We provide existence and uniqueness results together with energy estimates for both problems. In addition, we derive regularity estimates both in time and space; the time--regularity results show that the usual assumptions made in the numerical analysis literature are problematic

Abstract:In this paper, we studied the Hölder regularities of solutions to an abstract fractional differential equation, which is regarded as an abstract version of fractional Rayleigh–Stokes problems, rising up to describing a non-Newtonian fluid with a Riemann–Liouville fractional derivative. The purpose of this article was to establish the Hölder regularities of mild solutions, classical solutions, and strict solutions. We introduced an interpolation space in terms of an analytic resolvent to lower the spatial regularity of initial value data. By virtue of the properties of analytic resolvent and the interpolation space, the Hölder regularities were obtained. As applications, the main conclusions were applied to the regularities of fractional Rayleigh–Stokes problems.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the numerical solution of the time fractional diffusion equation. Essentially, the time fractional diffusion equation differs from the standard diffusion equation in the time derivative term. In the former case, the first-order time derivative is replaced by a fractional derivative, making the problem global in time. We propose a spectral method in both temporal and spatial discretizations for this equation. The convergence of the method is proven by providing a priori error estimate. Numerical tests are carried out to confirm the theoretical results. Thanks to the spectral accuracy in both space and time of the proposed method, the storage requirement due to the “global time dependence” can be considerably relaxed, and therefore calculation of the long-time solution becomes possible.
