Abstract:We show that there are $f$-vectors of balanced simplicial complexes giving a source of simplicial complexes exhibiting a Boolean decomposition similar to a geometric Lefschetz decomposition. The objects we are working with are $h$-vectors of flag spheres and balanced simplicial complexes whose $f$-vectors are equal to them. This builds on work of Nevo--Petersen--Tenner on a conjecture of Nevo--Petersen that the gamma vector of an odd-dimensional flag sphere is the $f$-vector of a balanced simplicial complex (which was shown for barycentric subdivisions by Nevo--Petersen--Tenner). We can connect our decomposition to positivity questions on reciprocal/palindromic polynomials associated to flag spheres and geometric questions motivating them. In addition, we note that the degrees in the Lefschetz-like decomposition are not halved unlike the usual $h$-vector setting.

Abstract:We study the exponential Hilbert series (both coarsely- and finely-graded) of the Stanley-Reisner ring of an abstract simplicial complex, $\Delta$, and we introduce the $e$-vector of $\Delta$, which relates to the coefficients of the exponential Hilbert series. We explore the relationship of the $e$-vector with the classical $f$-vector and $h$-vector of $\Delta$ while simultaneously investigating the geometric information that the $e$-vector encodes about $\Delta$. We then prove a simple combinatorial identity for the $e$-vector in the case where $\Delta$ is an Eulerian manifold.

Abstract:We show that the $\g$-vector of the interval subdivision of a simplicial complex with a nonnegative and symmetric $h$-vector is nonnegative. In particular, we prove that such $\g$-vector is the $f$-vector of some balanced simplicial complex. Moreover, we show that the local $\g$-vector of the interval subdivision of a simplex is nonnegative; answering a question by Juhnke-Kubitzke et al.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a standard graded algebra over a field. We investigate how the singularities of $R$ affect its $h$-vector, which is the coefficients of the numerator of its Hilbert series. The most concrete consequences of our work asserts that if $R$ satisfies Serre's condition $(S_r)$ and have reasonable singularities (Du Bois on the punctured spectrum or $F$-pure), then $h_0,\dots, h_r\geq 0$. Furthermore the multiplicity of $R$ is at least $h_0+h_1+\dots+h_{r-1}$. We also prove that equality in many cases forces $R$ to be Cohen-Macaulay. The main technical tools are sharp bounds on regularity of certain Ext modules, which can be viewed as Kodaira-type vanishing statements for Du Bois and $F$-singularities. Many corollaries are deduced, for instance that nice singularities of small codimension must be Cohen-Macaulay. Our results build on and extend previous work by de Fernex-Ein, Eisenbud-Goto, Huneke-Smith, Murai-Terai and others.

Recursive properties of Cohen--Macaulay flag simplicial complexes and Lefschetz decompositions from $f$-vectors

Abstract:Most applications of the hard Lefschetz theorem related to combinatorial properties of simplicial complexes involve their $h$-vectors. In the context of positivity properties involving $h$-vectors of flag spheres, $f$-vectors with a Lefschetz-type ``Boolean'' decomposition have been studied. In this note, we explore families of flag simplicial complexes where we can see this Boolean decomposition explicitly in terms of transformations connecting different simplicial complexes in this family. Note that we will take complexes in a given dimension to be PL homeomorphic to each other. In particular, the existence of a Boolean decomposition patched from local parts can be phrased in terms of a certain map formally satisfying an analogue of the hard Lefschetz theorem. The map is given by the composition of a double suspension with a ``net single edge subdivision''. Here, the former contributes to the Boolean part and the latter contributes to the disjoint non-Boolean part. The fact that the simplicial complex with the given $f$-vector can be taken to be balanced suggests algebraic versions of maps connected to these decompositions.

Filtration of cohomology via symmetric semisimplicial spaces

Abstract:In the simplicial theory of hypercoverings, we replace the indexing category $\Delta$ by the \emph{symmetric simplicial category} $\Delta S$ and study (a class of) $\Delta S$-hypercoverings, which we call \emph{spaces admitting symmetric (semi)simplicial filtration}. For $\Delta S$-hypercoverings we construct a spectral sequence, somewhat like the Čech-to-derived category spectral sequence. The advantage of working on $\Delta S$ is that all of the combinatorial complexities that come with working on $\Delta$ are bypassed, giving simpler, unified proof of known results like the computation of (in some cases, stable) singular cohomology (with $\mathbb{Q}$ coefficients) and et al e cohomology (with $\mathbb{Q}_{\ell}$ coefficients) of the moduli space of degree $n$ maps $C\to \mathbb{P}^r$, $C$ a smooth projective curve of genus $g$, of unordered configuration spaces etc. as well as new: that of the moduli space of smooth sections of a fixed $\mathfrak{g}^r_d$ that is $m$-very ample for some $m$.

Abstract:We introduce a method for associating a chain complex to a module over a combinatorial category, such that if the complex is exact then the module has a rational Hilbert series. We prove homology--vanishing theorems for these complexes for several combinatorial categories including: the category of finite sets and injections, the opposite of the category of finite sets and surjections, and the category of finite dimensional vector spaces over a finite field and injections. Our main applications are to modules over the opposite of the category of finite sets and surjections, known as $FS^{op}$ modules. We obtain many constraints on the sequence of symmetric group representations underlying a finitely generated $FS^{op}$ module. In particular, we describe its character in terms of functions that we call character exponentials. Our results have new consequences for the character of the homology of the moduli space of stable marked curves, and for the equivariant Kazhdan-Luzstig polynomial of the braid matroid.

Abstract:In \cite{Vakil13} Vakil and Wood made several conjectures on the topology of symmetric powers of geometrically irreducible varieties based on their computations on motivic zeta functions. Two of those conjectures are about subspaces of $\Sym^n(\P^1)$. In this note, we disprove one of them thereby obtaining a counterexample to the principle of Occcam's razor for Hodge structures; and we prove that the other conjecture, with a minor correction, holds true.

Abstract:This manuscript concerns with cyclic vectors in the Fock-type spaces of multi-variable cases, with positive parameters and . The one-variable case has been settled by the authors. Here, it is shown that for a positive number , a function f in the Fock-type space is cyclic if and only if f is non-vanishing. However, the case of s being a positive integer turns out to be more complicated. Different techniques and methods are developed in multi-variable cases for a complete characterization of cyclic vectors in for positive integers s .

For a face uniform subdivision operation ${\mathcal F}$ we write $\Delta_{\mathcal F}$ for the subdivided complex and $H_{\mathcal F}$ for the matrix such that $h^ {\Delta_{\mathcal F}} = H_{\mathcal F} h^ \Delta$. In connection with the real rootedness of symmetric decompositions Athanasiadis and Tzanaki studied for strictly positive $h$-vectors the inequalities $\frac{h_0^ \Delta}{h_1^ \Delta} \leq \frac{h_1^\Delta}{h_{d-1}^ \Delta} \leq \cdots \leq \frac{h_d^ \Delta}{h_0^\Delta}$ and $\frac{h_1^\Delta}{h_{d-1}^\Delta} \geq \cdots \geq \frac{h_{d-2}^\Delta}{h_2^\Delta} \geq \frac{h_{d-1}^\Delta}{h_1^\Delta}$. In this paper we show that if the inequalities holds for a simplicial complex $\Delta$ and $H_{\mathcal F}$ is TP$_2$ (all entries and two minors are non-negative) then the inequalities hold for $\Delta_{\mathcal F}$. We prove that if ${\mathcal F}$ is the barycentric subdivision then $H_{\mathcal F}$ is TP$_2$. If ${\mathcal F}$ is the $r$\textsuperscript{th}-edgewise subdivision then work of Diaconis and Fulman shows $H_{\mathcal F}$ is TP$_2$. Indeed in this case by work of Mao and Wang $H_{\mathcal F}$ is even TP.

Abstract:Let M be a matroid on E, representable over a field of characteristic zero. We show that h-vectors of the following simplicial complexes are log-concave:1.The matroid complex of independent subsets of E.2.The broken circuit complex of M relative to an ordering of E. The first implies a conjecture of Colbourn on the reliability polynomial of a graph, and the second implies a conjecture of Hoggar on the chromatic polynomial of a graph. The proof is based on the geometric formula for the characteristic polynomial of Denham, Garrousian, and Schulze.

Abstract:In 2017, Walter Taylor showed that there exist $2$-dimensional simplicial complexes which admit the structure of topological modular lattice but not topological distributive lattice. We give a positive answer to his question as to whether $n$-dimensional simplicial complexes with the same property exist. We do this by giving, for each $n\ge2$, an infinite family of compact simplicial complexes which admit the structure of topological modular lattice but not topological distributive lattice.

Abstract:We show that, if $\Gamma$ is a point group of $\mathbb{R}^{k+1}$ of order two for some $k\geq 2$ and $\mathcal S$ is a $k$-pseudomanifold which has a free automorphism of order two, then either $\mathcal S$ has a $\Gamma$-symmetric infinitesimally rigid realisation in $\mathbb{R}^{k+1}$ or $k=2$ and $\Gamma$ is a half-turn rotation group.This verifies a conjecture made by Klee, Nevo, Novik and Zhang for the case when $\Gamma$ is a point-inversion group. Our result implies that Stanley's lower bound theorem for centrally symmetric polytopes extends to pseudomanifolds with a free simplicial involution, thus verifying (the inequality part) of another conjecture of Klee, Nevo, Novik and Zheng. Both results actually apply to a much larger class of simplicial complexes, namely the circuits of the simplicial matroid. The proof of our rigidity result adapts earlier ideas of Fogelsanger to the setting of symmetric simplicial complexes.

Abstract:We review results on the first Hochschild cohomology vector space of a finite dimensional algebra, in particular for path algebras modulo a "pre-generated" ideal. In case of a monomial algebra whose quiver has no oriented cycles, a dimension formula is provided. The general monomial case is considered in a paper with M. Saorin.

Then we propose a conjectural characterization of non-uniruled projective manifolds with pseudo-effective tangent bundle.

Abstract:For any natural numbers $k \leq n$, the rational cohomology ring of the space of continuous maps $S^{2k-1} \to S^{2n-1}$ (respectively, $S^{4k-1} \to S^{4n-1}$) equivariant under the Hopf action of the circle (respectively, of the group $S^3$ of unit quaternions) is naturally isomorphic to that of the Stiefel manifold $V_k({\mathbb C}^n)$ (respectively, $V_k({\mathbb H}^n)$). The natural maps of integral cohomology groups of these spaces of equivariant maps to cohomology of Stiefel manifolds are surjective but not injective.

Seshadri constants on $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$, and applications to the symplectic packing problem

Abstract:In this paper we compute the $r$-point Seshadri constant on $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$ for those line bundles where the answer might be expected to be governed by $(-1)$-curves. As a consequence we obtain explicit formulas for the symplectic packing problem for $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$. Some exact values of the Seshadri constant outside the region governed by Mori's cone theorem are also given. These latter results use a useful new "reflection method". In the analysis there is a striking difference between the cases when $r$ is odd and when $r$ is even. When $r$ is even the problem admits an infinite order automorphism, and there are infinitely many $(-1)$-curves to consider. In contrast, when $r$ is odd only a finite number (usually $4$) types of $(-1)$-curves are relevant to our answer.

Abstract:Mixed metaphors have been neglected in recent metaphor research. This paper suggests that such neglect is short-sighted. Though mixing is a more complex phenomenon than straight metaphors, the same kinds of reasoning and knowledge structures are required. This paper provides an analysis of both parallel and serial mixed metaphors within the framework of an AI system which is already capable of reasoning about straight metaphorical manifestations and argues that the processes underlying mixing are central to metaphorical meaning. Therefore, any theory of metaphors must be able to account for mixing.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of dual $n$-groupoid to a simplicial vector space for any $n\ge 0$. This has a canonical duality pairing which we show to be non-degenerate up to homotopy for homotopy $n$-types. As a result this notion of duality is reflexive up to homotopy for $n$-types. In particular the same properties hold for $n$-groupoid objects, whose $n$-duals are again $n$-groupoids. We study this construction in the context of the Dold-Kan correspondence and we reformulate the Eilenberg-Zilber theorem, which classically controls monoidality of the Dold-Kan functors, in terms of mapping complexes. We compute explicitly the 1-dual of a groupoid object and the 2-dual of a 2-groupoid object in the category of vector spaces. As the 1-dual of a groupoid object we recover its dual as a $\mathsf{VB}$ groupoid over the point.

Abstract:For $K$ an infinite field of characteristic other than two, consider the action of the special orthogonal group $\operatorname{SO}_t(K)$ on a polynomial ring via copies of the regular representation. When $K$ has characteristic zero, Boutot's theorem implies that the invariant ring has rational singularities; when $K$ has positive characteristic, the invariant ring is $F$-regular, as proven by Hashimoto using good filtrations. We give a new proof of this, viewing the invariant ring for $\operatorname{SO}_t(K)$ as a cyclic cover of the invariant ring for the corresponding orthogonal group; this point of view has a number of useful consequences, for example it readily yields the $a$-invariant and information on the Hilbert series. Indeed, we use this to show that the $h$-vector of the invariant ring for $\operatorname{SO}_t(K)$ need not be unimodal.
