Abstract:We study a shrinking target problem on square-tiled surfaces. We show that the action of a subgroup of the Veech group of a regular square-tiled surface exhibits Diophantine properties. This generalizes the work of Finkelshtein, who studied a similar problem on the flat torus.

Abstract:A novel compressibility-aware image retargeting method based on seam carving is introduced in this paper. We propose a new significance detection method, with both the edge information and visual saliency taken into consideration. A wall-seam model is constructed to evaluate the image compressibility and assign the right number of seams for each direction. By repeatedly carving out or inserting seams we can retarget the image to a new size while preserving the important content. Finally, our algorithm is completed with the supplement of uniformly scaling, the stretched image is re-sized to the target size with the least structure distortion brought. Experimental results on images show that those improvements are effective and our approach can preserve image content better compared to several state-ofthe-art image retargeting methods. Abstract:In this paper we investigate the shrinking target property for irrational rotations. This was first studied by Kurzweil (1951) and has received considerable interest of late. Using a new approach, we generalize results of Kim (2007) and Shapira (2013) by proving a weighted effective analogue of the shrinking target property. Furthermore, our results are established in the much wider $S$-arithmetic setting.

Abstract:We study shrinking target problems and the set of eventually always hitting points. These are the points whose first n iterates will never have empty intersection with the nth target for sufficiently large n. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions on the shrinking rate of the targets for to be of full or zero measure especially for some interval maps including the doubling map, some quadratic maps and the Manneville–Pomeau map. We also obtain results for the Gauß map and correspondingly for the maximal digits in continued fraction expansions. In the case of -transformations we also compute the packing dimension of complementing already known results on the Hausdorff dimension of .

Intermediate dimensions of Bedford-McMullen carpets with applications to Lipschitz equivalence

Abstract:Intermediate dimensions were recently introduced to provide a spectrum of dimensions interpolating between Hausdorff and box-counting dimensions for fractals where these differ. In particular, the self-affine Bedford-McMullen carpets are a natural case for investigation, but until now only very rough bounds for their intermediate dimensions have been found. In this paper, we determine a precise formula for the intermediate dimensions $\dim_{\, \theta}\Lambda$ of any Bedford-McMullen carpet $\Lambda$ for the whole spectrum of $\theta \in [0,1]$, in terms of a certain large deviations rate function. The intermediate dimensions exist and are strictly increasing in $\theta$, and the function $\theta\mapsto \dim_{\, \theta}\Lambda$ exhibits interesting features not witnessed on any previous example, such as having countably many phase transitions, between which it is analytic and strictly concave.

These two dimensions have a common value if and only if the carpet is either the Cartesian product of [Formula: see text] and a self-similar set, or it is one of the two diagonals of the unit square.

Abstract:Targets are matroids that arise from a nested sequence of flats in a projective geometry. This class of matroids was introduced by Nelson and Nomoto, who found the forbidden induced restrictions for binary targets. This paper generalizes their result to targets arising from projective geometries over $GF(q)$. We also consider targets arising from nested sequences of affine flats and determine the forbidden induced restrictions for affine targets.

For $\psi:\mathbb N\to\mathbb R_{\geq 0}$, $x\in X$, and $N\in\mathbb N$ we consider the recurrence counting function \[ R(x,N;T,\psi) := \#\{1\leq n\leq N: d(T^n x, x) < \psi(n)\}. \] We show that for any $\varepsilon > 0$ we have \[ R(x,N;T,\psi) = \Psi(N)+O\left(\Psi^{1/2}(N) \ (\log\Psi(N))^{3/2+\varepsilon}\right) \] for $\mu$-almost all $x\in X$ and for all $N\in\mathbb N$, where $\Psi(N):= 2 \sum_{n=1}^N \psi(n)$. Abstract:For $ \beta>1 $ let $ T_\beta $ be the $\beta$-transformation on $ [0,1) $. Let $ \beta_1,\dots,\beta_d>1 $ and let $ \mathcal P=\{P_n\}_{n\ge 1} $ be a sequence of parallelepipeds in $ [0,1)^d $. Define \[W(\mathcal P)=\{\textbf{x}\in[0,1)^d:(T_{\beta_1}\times\cdots \times T_{\beta_2})^n(\textbf{x})\in P_n\text{ infinitely often}\}.\] When each $ P_n $ is a hyperrectangle with sides parallel to the axes, the 'rectangle to rectangle' mass transference principle by Wang and Wu [Math. Ann. 381 (2021)] is usually employed to derive the lower bound for $\mathrm{dim_H} W(\mathcal P)$, where $\mathrm{dim_H}$ denotes the Hausdorff dimension. However, in the case where $ P_n $ is still a hyperrectangle but with rotation, this principle, while still applicable, often fails to yield the desired lower bound. In this paper, we determine the optimal cover of parallelepipeds, thereby obtaining $\mathrm{dim_H} W(\mathcal P)$. We also provide several examples to illustrate how the rotations of hyperrectangles affect $\mathrm{dim_H} W(\mathcal P)$.

Abstract:We prove that any non-degenerate Bedford-McMullen carpet does not allow oblique self-embedding similitudes; that is, if $f$ is a similitude sending the carpet into itself, then the image of the $x$-axis under $f$ must be parallel to one of the principal axes. We also establish a logarithmic commensurability result on the contraction ratios of such embeddings. This completes a previous study of Algom and Hochman [Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys. 39 (2019), 577--603] on Bedford-McMullen carpets generated by multiplicatively independent exponents, together with a new proof on their non-obliqueness statement. For the self-similar case, however, we construct a generalized Sierpinski carpet that is symmetric with respect to an appropriate oblique line and hence allows a reflectional oblique self-embedding. As a complement, we prove that if a generalized Sierpinski carpet satisfies the strong separation condition and permits an oblique rotational self-embedding similitude, then the tangent of the rotation angle takes values $\pm 1$.

Analysis of a multi-target linear shrinkage covariance estimator

Abstract:Multi-target linear shrinkage is an extension of the standard single-target linear shrinkage for covariance estimation. We combine several constant matrices - the targets - with the sample covariance matrix. We derive the oracle and a \textit{bona fide} multi-target linear shrinkage estimator with exact and empirical mean. In both settings, we proved its convergence towards the oracle under Kolmogorov asymptotics. Finally, we show empirically that it outperforms other standard estimators in various situations.

Abstract:Let $A$ be an invertible $d\times d$ matrix with integer elements. Then $A$ determines a self-map $T$ of the $d$-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^d=\mathbb{R}^d/\mathbb{Z}^d$. Given a real number $\tau>0$, and a sequence $\{z_n\}$ of points in $\mathbb{T}^d$, let $W_\tau$ be the set of points $x\in\mathbb{T}^d$ such that $T^n(x)\in B(z_n,e^{-n\tau})$ for infinitely many $n\in\mathbb{N}$. The Hausdorff dimension of $W_\tau$ has previously been studied by Hill--Velani and Li--Liao--Velani--Zorin. We provide complete results on the Hausdorff dimension of $W_\tau$ for any expanding matrix. For hyperbolic matrices, we compute the dimension of $W_\tau$ only when $A$ is a $2 \times 2$ matrix. We give counterexamples to a natural candidate for a dimension formula for general dimension $d$.

Abstract:We calculate the Assouad and lower dimensions of graph-directed Bedford-McMullen carpets, which reflect the extreme local scaling laws of the sets, in contrasting with known results on Hausdorff and box dimensions. We also investigate the relationship between distinct dimensions. In particular, we identify an equivalent condition when the box and Assouad dimension coincide, and show that under this condition, the Hausdorff dimension attains the same value.

Abstract:Sparse and low-rank modeling has shown the powerful describing abilities to express small targets; however, low-rank model exists the problem of insufficient rank approximation deviation ability and excessive shrinkage, which will lead to inaccurate background estimation. In this letter, a new nonconvex approximation function using the Gaussian model is built toward deeply excavating low-rank information of the background as much as possible. In the sparse collaborative representation, the local prior confidence (LPC) is integrated into the target structure tensor to maximum to distinguish target region and background edge more accurately. In the process of background restoration, total variation constraint (TVC) is employed apropos of describing gray variation of small targets in complex backgrounds more precisely and improving the accuracy of background restoration to further perfectly recover small targets. The low-rank and sparse recovery algorithm engages alternating direction multiplier method (ADMM) for iterative calculation and solution. Compared with advanced optimal algorithms, a great number of experimental results show that the proposed model improves the adaptability and robustness of the detection algorithm to a variety of complex scenes, and has lasting vitality and high-application value.

Abstract:The shrinkage estimator of a high-dimensional covariance matrix relies on a preassigned target matrix during data processing. This paper provides an adaptive approach for selecting the optimal Toeplitz target matrix. We discover a sufficient and necessary condition for characterizing the two kinds of target matrices with the Toeplitz structure, and we propose an adaptive selection algorithm by measuring the similarity between the data and the Toeplitz structure. Numerical simulations and an empirical study on monetary funds verify the effectiveness of the selection approach.

Abstract:It is well known that the Hausdorff dimension and box dimension of a Bedford-McMullen carpet coincide if and only if the carpet has uniform horizontal fibers. Yang et al. [17] gave a complete Lipschitz classification of such carpets which are totally disconnected and possessing vacant rows. In this paper, we show that if we replace the uniform horizontal fibers condition by a locally uniform horizontal fibers condition, the conclusions of Yang et al. still hold.
