Abstract: Let $G$ be a real reductive group in Harish-Chandra's class. We derive some consequences of theory of coherent continuation representations to the counting of irreducible representations of $G$ with a given infinitesimal character and a given bound of the complex associated variety. When $G$ is a real classical group (including the real metaplectic group), we investigate the set of special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$, in the sense of Arthur and Barbasch-Vogan. Here $\check{\mathcal O}$ is a nilpotent adjoint orbit in the Langlands dual of $G$ (or the metaplectic dual of $G$ when $G$ is a real metaplectic group). We give a precise count for the number of special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{ \mathcal O}$. We also reduce the problem of constructing special unipotent representations attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$ to the case when $\check{\mathcal O}$ is analytically even (equivalently for a real classical group, has good parity in the sense of M{\oe}glin). The paper is the first in a series of two papers on the classification of special unipotent representations of real classical groups.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number and $K$ a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$. We state conjectures on the smooth representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(K)$ that occur in spaces of mod $p$ automorphic forms (for compact unitary groups). In particular, when $K$ is unramified, we conjecture that they are of finite length and predict their internal structure (extensions, form of subquotients) from the structure of a certain algebraic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_n$. When $n=2$ and $K$ is unramified, we prove several cases of our conjectures, including new finite length results.

On principal series representations of quasi-split reductive p-adic groups

Abstract:Let G be a quasi-split reductive group over a non-archimedean local field. We establish a local Langlands correspondence for all irreducible smooth complex G-representations in the principal series. The parametrization map is injective, and its image is an explicitly described set of enhanced L-parameters. Our correspondence is determined by the choice of a Whittaker datum for G, and it is canonical given that choice. We show that our parametrization satisfies many expected properties, among others with respect to the enhanced L-parameters of generic representations, temperedness, cuspidal supports and central characters. Along the way we characterize genericity in terms of representations of an affine Hecke algebra.

Non-optimal levels of some reducible mod $p$ modular representations

Abstract:Let $p \geq 5$ be a prime, $N$ be an integer not divisible by $p$, $\bar\rho_0$ be a reducible, odd and semi-simple representation of $G_{\mathbb{Q},Np}$ of dimension $2$ and $\{\ell_1,\cdots,\ell_r\}$ be a set of primes not dividing $Np$. After assuming that a certain Selmer group has dimension at most $1$, we find sufficient conditions for the existence of a cuspidal eigenform $f$ of level $N\prod_{i=1}^{r}\ell_i$ and appropriate weight lifting $\bar\rho_0$ such that $f$ is new at every $\ell_i$. Moreover, suppose $p \mid \ell_{i_0}+1$ for some $1 \leq i_0 \leq r$. Then, after assuming that a certain Selmer group vanishes, we find sufficient conditions for the existence of a cuspidal eigenform of level $N\ell_{i_0}^2 \prod_{j \neq i_0} \ell_j$ and appropriate weight which is new at every $\ell_i$ and which lifts $\bar\rho_0$. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Billerey--Menares in many cases.

Abstract:For a prime $p,$ let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite extension of $\mathbb{F}_p$ and $\mathcal{G}=\text{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q).$ Then the irreducible representations of $\mathcal{G}$ are classified as twists of Sym$^{\vec{r}}(\overline{\mathbb F}_p^2).$ The restriction of irreducibles of $\mathcal{G}$ to its subgroup $G=\text{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_p)$ is same as investigating the behavior of the tensor product of irreducible representations of $G.$ In this paper, we study the restriction of some of these representations of $\mathcal{G}$ to $G,$ for $2$ and $3$ degree extensions of $\mathbb{F}_p.$

Abstract:Let p be an arbitrary prime number and k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic l different from p. We construct maximal simple k-types of Levi subgroups M' of SLn(F), when F is a non-archimedean locally compact field of residual characteristic p, which is to say that any cuspidal k-representation of M' can be compactly induced from an irreducible k-representation of a compact modulo centre subgroup of M', and we also prove the unicity property of intertwining implies conjugacy for maximal simple k-types, extended maximal simple k-types and simple k-characters of M'.

Abstract:In \cite{Pillay} and more formally in \cite{Onshuus-Pillay} it was asked whether open subgroups of $p$-adic algebraic groups are ($p$-adic) semialgebraic, equivalently, definable in the structure $(\mathbb Q_{p}, +, \times)$. We give a positive answer in the commutative case. Together with results of \cite{Prasad} this leads to a positive answer for reductive algebraic groups.

Abstract:Consider a standard representation $\sigma$ of a quasi-split reductive p-adic group G. The generalized injectivity conjecture, posed by Casselman--Shahidi, asserts that any generic irreducible subquotient $\pi$ of $\sigma$ is necessarily a subrepresentation of $\sigma$. We will prove this conjecture, improving on the verification for many groups by Dijols.

Abstract:We study the mod $p$-points of the Kisin--Pappas integral models of Shimura varieties of Hodge type with parahoric level. We show that if the group is quasi-split, then every isogeny class contains the reduction of a CM point, proving a conjecture of Kisin--Madapusi-Pera--Shin. We furthermore show that the mod $p$ isogeny classes are of the form predicted by the Langlands--Rapoport conjecture if either the Shimura variety is proper or if the group at $p$ is unramified. The main ingredient in our work is a global argument that allows us to reduce the conjecture to the case of very special parahoric level. This case is dealt with in the appendix by Rong Zhou. As a corollary to our arguments, we determine the connected components of Ekedahl--Oort strata.

On the geometry of the Pappas-Rapoport models in the (AR) case

Abstract:We study some integral model of P.E.L. Shimura varieties of type A for ramified primes. Precisely, we look at the Pappas-Rapoport model (or splitting model) of some unitary Shimura varieties for which there is ramification in the degree 2 CM extension. We show that the model isn't smooth, but that it is normal with Cohen-Macaulay special fiber. We moreover study its special fiber by introducing a combinatorial stratification for which we can compute the closure relations. Even if there are "extra" components in special fiber, we prove that those do not contribute to mod p modular forms in regular degree. We also study the interaction of the stratification with the natural stratification given by the vanishing of some partial Hasse invariants, in the case of signature (1,n-1).

Given a quadratic field extension $E/F$ and an irreducible $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_{\ell}$-representation $\pi$ of $\mathrm{GL}_n(E)$, we verify the Jacquet conjecture in the modular setting that if the Langlands parameter $\phi_\pi$ is irreducible and conjugate-self-dual, then $\pi$ is either $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$-distinguished or $(\mathrm{GL}_n(F),\omega_{E/F})$-distinguished (where $\omega_{E/F}$ is the quadratic character of $F^\times$ associated to the quadratic field extension $E/F$ by the local class field theory), but not both, which extends one result of Sécherre to the case $p=2$. We give another application of our lifting theorem for supercuspidal representations distinguished by a unitary involution, extending one result of Zou to $p=2$.

Decomposition and parity of p-adic representations attached to algebraic automorphic forms on GL(4)

Abstract:Let F be a number field with adele ring A_F, and \pi an isobaric, algebraic automorphic representation of GL_4(A_F) of a fixed archimedean weight, which is quasi-regular, meaning that at every archimedean place v of F, the 4-dimensional representation \sigma_v of the Weil group W_{F_v} attached to \pi_v is multiplicity free. Suppose there is an associated 4-dimensional, Hodge-Tate p-adic representation \rho of the absolute Galois group G_F, whose local L-factors agree with those of \pi (up to a shift) at almost all primes P of F. Then our first result is that the semisimplification of \rho does not contain any irreducible 2-dimensional Galois representation which is even. The second result is that if \pi is regular and \rho crystalline, then for sufficiently large p (see the article for a precise statement), the decomposition type of \rho is the same as the isobaric type of \pi. A consequence is that \rho is irreducible when \pi is cuspidal (and regular algebraic), which has also been proved by F. Calegari and T. Gee, in fact with no hypothesis on p. The third and final result, using Taylor's potential modularity theorem, is that given a pair (\sigma, \sigma') of odd, 2-dimensional p-adic representations of the same weight and distinct Hodge-Tate types, such that their direct sum is automorphic, the dimension of the G_F-invariants of the tensor product \eta of the dual of \sigma with \sigma' equals, for large p, the order of pole at s=1 of the L-function of \eta (with the bad factors removed). This is as predicted by the Tate conjecture when \sigma, \sigma' occur in p-adic etale cohmology of smooth projective varieties over F, and it also provides a useful link to a small piece of the work of C. Skinner and E. Urban.

Mod-$p$ Galois representations not arising from abelian varieties

Abstract:It is known that any Galois representation $\rho : G_{\mathbb{Q}} \rightarrow \mathrm{GL}(2,\mathbb{F}_p)$ with determinant equal to the mod-$p$ cyclotomic character, arises from the $p$-torsion of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$, if and only if $p \leq 5$. In dimension $g = 2$, when $p \le 3$, it is again known that any Galois representation valued in $\mathrm{GSp}(4,\mathbb{F}_p)$ with cyclotomic similitude character arises from an abelian surface. In this paper, we study this question for all primes $p$ and dimensions $g \ge 2$. When $g \ge 2$ and $(g,p) \neq (2,2)$, $(2,3)$, $(3,2)$, we prove the existence of a Galois representation over $\mathbb{Q}$ valued in $\mathrm{GSp}(2g,\mathbb{F}_p)$ with cyclotomic similitude character, that cannot arise as the $p$-torsion representation of any $g$-dimensional abelian variety over $\mathbb{Q}$.

On the upper bound of wavefront sets of representations of p-adic groups

Abstract:In this paper we study the upper bound of wavefront sets of irreducible admissible representations of connected reductive groups defined over non-Archimedean local fields of characteristic zero. We formulate a new conjecture on the upper bound and show that it can be reduced to that of anti-discrete series representations, namely, those whose Aubert-Zelevinsky duals are discrete series. Then, we show that this conjecture is equivalent to the Jiang conjecture on the upper bound of wavefront sets of representations in local Arthur packets and also equivalent to an analogous conjecture on the upper bound of wavefront sets of representations in local ABV packets.

On Donkin's Tilting Module Conjecture III: New Generic Lower Bounds

Abstract:In this paper the authors consider four questions of primary interest for the representation theory of reductive algebraic groups: (i) Donkin's Tilting Module Conjecture, (ii) the Humphreys-Verma Question, (iii) whether $\operatorname{St}_r \otimes L(\lambda)$ is a tilting module for $L(\lambda)$ an irrreducible representation of $p^{r}$-restricted highest weight, and (iv) whether $\operatorname{Ext}^{1}_{G_{1}}(L(\lambda),L(\mu))^{(-1)}$ is a tilting module where $L(\lambda)$ and $L(\mu)$ have $p$-restricted highest weight. The authors establish affirmative answers to each of these questions with a new uniform bound, namely $p\geq 2h-4$ where $h$ is the Coxeter number. Notably, this verifies these statements for infinitely many more cases. Later in the paper, questions (i)-(iv) are considered for rank two groups where there are counterexamples (for small primes) to these questions.

Modular Representations of Truncated current Lie algebras

Abstract:In this paper we consider the structure and representation theory of truncated current algebras $\mathfrak{g}_m = \mathfrak{g}[t]/(t^{m+1})$ associated to the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ of a standard reductive group over a field of positive characteristic. We classify semisimple and nilpotent elements and describe their associated support varieties. Next, we prove various Morita equivalences for reduced enveloping algebras, including a reduction to nilpotent $p$-characters, analogous to a famous theorem of Friedlander--Parshall. We go on to give precise upper bounds for the dimensions of simple modules for all $p$-characters, and give lower bounds on these dimensions for homogeneous $p$-characters. We then develop the theory of baby Verma modules for homogeneous $p$-characters and, whenever the $p$-character has standard Levi type, we give a full classification of the simple modules. In particular we classify all simple modules with homogeneous $p$-characters for $\mathfrak{g}_m$ when $\mathfrak{g} = \mathfrak{gl}_n$. Finally, we compute the Cartan invariants for the restricted enveloping algebra $U_0(\mathfrak{g}_m)$ and show that they can be described by precise formulae depending on decomposition numbers for $U_0(\mathfrak{g})$.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a totally real field in which $p$ is unramified and $B$ be a quaternion algebra which splits at at most one infinite place. Let $\overline{r}:\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{F}/F)\to \mathrm{GL}_2(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p)$ be a modular Galois representation which satisfies the Taylor-Wiles hypotheses. Assume that for some fixed place $v|p$, $B$ ramifies at $v$ and $F_v$ is isomorphic to $ \mathbb{Q}_p$ and $\overline{r}$ is generic at $v$. We prove that the admissible smooth representations of the quaternion algebra over $\mathbb{Q}_p$ coming from mod $p$ cohomology of Shimura varieties associated to $B$ have Gelfand-Kirillov dimension $1$. As an application we prove that the degree two Scholze's functor vanishes on supersingular representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$. We also prove some finer structure theorem about the image of Scholze's functor in the reducible case.

Mod-p Poincaré Duality in p-adic Analytic Geometry

Abstract:We show Poincaré Duality for $\mathbf{F}_p$-étale cohomology of a smooth proper rigid-analytic space over a non-archimedean field $K$ of mixed characteristic $(0, p)$. It positively answers the question raised by P. Scholze in [Sch13a]. We prove duality via constructing Faltings' trace map relating Poincaré Duality on the generic fiber to (almost) Grothendieck Duality on the mod-$p$ fiber of a formal model. We also formally deduce Poincaré Duality for $\mathbf{Z}/p^n\mathbf{Z}$, $\mathbf{Z}_p$, and $\mathbf{Q}_p$-coefficients.
