Abstract:In this report we propose a classification technique for skin lesion images as a part of our submission for ISIC 2018 Challenge in Skin Lesion Analysis Towards Melanoma Detection. Our data was extracted from the ISIC 2018: Skin Lesion Analysis Towards Melanoma Detection grand challenge datasets. The features are extracted through a Convolutional Neural Network, in our case ResNet50 and then using these features we train a DeepForest, having cascading layers, to classify our skin lesion images. We know that Convolutional Neural Networks are a state-of-the-art technique in representation learning for images, with the convolutional filters learning to detect features from images through backpropagation. These features are then usually fed to a classifier like a softmax layer or other such classifiers for classification tasks. In our case we do not use the traditional backpropagation method and train a softmax layer for classification. Instead, we use Deep Forest, a novel decision tree ensemble approach with performance highly competitive to deep neural networks in a broad range of tasks. Thus we use a ResNet50 to extract the features from skin lesion images and then use the Deep Forest to classify these images. This method has been used because Deep Forest has been found to be hugely efficient in areas where there are only small-scale training data available. Also as the Deep Forest network decides its complexity by itself, it also caters to the problem of dataset imbalance we faced in this problem.

Abstract:Skin lesion is a severe disease in world-wide extent. Early detection of melanoma in dermoscopy images significantly increases the survival rate. However, the accurate recognition of melanoma is extremely challenging due to the following reasons, e.g. low contrast between lesions and skin, visual similarity between melanoma and non-melanoma lesions, etc. Hence, reliable automatic detection of skin tumors is very useful to increase the accuracy and efficiency of pathologists. International Skin Imaging Collaboration (ISIC) is a challenge focusing on the automatic analysis of skin lesion. In this paper, we proposed two deep learning methods to address all the three tasks announced in ISIC 2017, i.e. lesion segmentation (task 1), lesion dermoscopic feature extraction (task 2) and lesion classification (task 3). A deep learning framework consisting of two fully-convolutional residual networks (FCRN) is proposed to simultaneously produce the segmentation result and the coarse classification result. A lesion index calculation unit (LICU) is developed to refine the coarse classification results by calculating the distance heat-map. A straight-forward CNN is proposed for the dermoscopic feature extraction task. To our best knowledges, we are not aware of any previous work proposed for this task. The proposed deep learning frameworks were evaluated on the ISIC 2017 testing set. Experimental results show the promising accuracies of our frameworks, i.e. 0.718 for task 1, 0.833 for task 2 and 0.823 for task 3 were achieved.

Abstract:In this paper, we studied extensively on different deep learning based methods to detect melanoma and skin lesion cancers. Melanoma, a form of malignant skin cancer is very threatening to health. Proper diagnosis of melanoma at an earlier stage is crucial for the success rate of complete cure. Dermoscopic images with Benign and malignant forms of skin cancer can be analyzed by computer vision system to streamline the process of skin cancer detection. In this study, we experimented with various neural networks which employ recent deep learning based models like PNASNet-5-Large, InceptionResNetV2, SENet154, InceptionV4. Dermoscopic images are properly processed and augmented before feeding them into the network. We tested our methods on International Skin Imaging Collaboration (ISIC) 2018 challenge dataset. Our system has achieved best validation score of 0.76 for PNASNet-5-Large model. Further improvement and optimization of the proposed methods with a bigger training dataset and carefully chosen hyper-parameter could improve the performances. Abstract:Melanoma, a malignant form of skin cancer is very threatening to life. Diagnosis of melanoma at an earlier stage is highly needed as it has a very high cure rate. Benign and malignant forms of skin cancer can be detected by analyzing the lesions present on the surface of the skin using dermoscopic images. In this work, an automated skin lesion detection system has been developed which learns the representation of the image using Google's pretrained CNN model known as Inception-v3 \cite{cnn}. After obtaining the representation vector for our input dermoscopic images we have trained two layer feed forward neural network to classify the images as malignant or benign. The system also classifies the images based on the cause of the cancer either due to melanocytic or non-melanocytic cells using a different neural network. These classification tasks are part of the challenge organized by International Skin Imaging Collaboration (ISIC) 2017. Our system learns to classify the images based on the model built using the training images given in the challenge and the experimental results were evaluated using validation and test sets. Our system has achieved an overall accuracy of 65.8\% for the validation set.

Abstract:This report describes our submission to the ISIC 2017 Challenge in Skin Lesion Analysis Towards Melanoma Detection. We have participated in the Part 3: Lesion Classification with a system for automatic diagnosis of nevus, melanoma and seborrheic keratosis. Our approach aims to incorporate the expert knowledge of dermatologists into the well known framework of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), which have shown impressive performance in many visual recognition tasks. In particular, we have designed several networks providing lesion area identification, lesion segmentation into structural patterns and final diagnosis of clinical cases. Furthermore, novel blocks for CNNs have been designed to integrate this information with the diagnosis processing pipeline.

Abstract:In this article, we describe the design and implementation of a publicly accessible dermatology image analysis benchmark challenge. The goal of the challenge is to sup- port research and development of algorithms for automated diagnosis of melanoma, a lethal form of skin cancer, from dermoscopic images. The challenge was divided into sub-challenges for each task involved in image analysis, including lesion segmentation, dermoscopic feature detection within a lesion, and classification of melanoma. Training data included 900 images. A separate test dataset of 379 images was provided to measure resultant performance of systems developed with the training data. Ground truth for both training and test sets was generated by a panel of dermoscopic experts. In total, there were 79 submissions from a group of 38 participants, making this the largest standardized and comparative study for melanoma diagnosis in dermoscopic images to date. While the official challenge duration and ranking of participants has concluded, the datasets remain available for further research and development.

Abstract:This manuscript describes our participation in the International Skin Imaging Collaboration's 2017 Skin Lesion Analysis Towards Melanoma Detection competition. We participated in Part 3: Lesion Classification. The two stated goals of this binary image classification challenge were to distinguish between (a) melanoma and (b) nevus and seborrheic keratosis, followed by distinguishing between (a) seborrheic keratosis and (b) nevus and melanoma. We chose a deep neural network approach with a transfer learning strategy, using a pre-trained Inception V3 network as both a feature extractor to provide input for a multi-layer perceptron as well as fine-tuning an augmented Inception network. This approach yielded validation set AUC's of 0.84 on the second task and 0.76 on the first task, for an average AUC of 0.80. We joined the competition unfortunately late, and we look forward to improving on these results.

Abstract:We present a method for skin lesion segmentation for the ISIC 2017 Skin Lesion Segmentation Challenge. Our approach is based on a Fully Convolutional Network architecture which is trained end to end, from scratch, on a limited dataset. Our semantic segmentation architecture utilizes several recent innovations in particularly in the combined use of (i) use of atrous convolutions to increase the effective field of view of the network's receptive field without increasing the number of parameters, (ii) the use of network-in-network $1\times1$ convolution layers to add capacity to the network and (iii) state-of-art super-resolution upsampling of predictions using subpixel CNN layers. We reported a mean IOU score of 0.642 on the validation set provided by the organisers.

Abstract:Skin cancer, the most common human malignancy, is primarily diagnosed visually by physicians [1]. Classification with an automated method like CNN [2, 3] shows potential for challenging tasks [1]. By now, the deep convolutional neural networks are on par with human dermatologist [1]. This abstract is dedicated on developing a Deep Learning method for ISIC [5] 2017 Skin Lesion Detection Competition hosted at [6] to classify the dermatology pictures, which is aimed at improving the diagnostic accuracy rate and general level of the human health. The challenge falls into three sub-challenges, including Lesion Segmentation, Lesion Dermoscopic Feature Extraction and Lesion Classification. This project only participates in the Lesion Classification part. This algorithm is comprised of three steps: (1) original images preprocessing, (2) modelling the processed images using CNN [2, 3] in Caffe [4] framework, (3) predicting the test images and calculating the scores that represent the likelihood of corresponding classification. The models are built on the source images are using the Caffe [4] framework. The scores in prediction step are obtained by two different models from the source images.

Abstract:Background: Early identification of malignant melanoma with the surgical removal of thin lesions is the most effective treatment for skin cancers. A computer-aided diagnostic system assists to improve the diagnostic accuracy, where segmenting lesion from normal skin is usually considered as the first step. One of the challenges in the automated segmentation of skin lesions arises from the fact that darker areas within the lesion should be considered separate from the more general suspicious lesion as a whole, because these pigmented areas can provide significant additional diagnostic information. Methods: This paper presents, for the first time, an unsupervised segmentation scheme to allow the isolation of normal skin, pigmented skin lesions, and interesting darker areas inside the lesion simultaneously. An adaptive mean-shift is first applied with a 5D spatial colour-texture feature space to generate a group of homogenous regions. Then the sub-segmentation maps are calculated by integrating maximal similarity-based region merging and the kernel k-means algorithm, where the number of segments is defined by a cluster validity measurement. Results: The proposed method has been validated extensively on both normal digital photographs and dermoscopy images, which demonstrates competitive performance in achieving automatic segmentation. The isolated dark areas have proved helpful in the discrimination of malignant melanomas from atypical benign nevi. Compared with the results obtained from the asymmetry measure of the entire lesion, the asymmetry distribution of the isolated dark areas helped increase the accuracy of the identification of malignant melanoma from 65.38% to 73.07%, and this classification accuracy reached 80.77% on integrating both asymmetry descriptors. Conclusion: The proposed segmentation scheme gives the lesion boundary closed to the manual segmentation obtained by experienced dermatologists. The initial classification results indicate that the study of the distributions of darker areas inside the lesions is very promising in characterizing melanomas.

Abstract:Diagnosis of skin lesions is a very challenging task due to high inter-class similarities and intra-class variations between lesions in terms of color, size, site and appearance. As a result, as is the case with many types of cancer, early detection of skin cancer is vital for survival. Advances in artificial intelligence, in particular, deep learning have enabled to design and implementation of intelligence-based lesion detection and classification systems that are based on visible light images that are capable of performing early and accurate diagnosis of different skin diseases. In most cases, the precision of these methods has reached a level of accuracy that is comparable to that achieved by a qualified dermatologist. This work presents potential skin lesion classification solutions based on the datasets taken from the most recent publicly available “Skin Lesion Analysis Towards Melanoma Detection” grand challenges ISIC 2018. The proposed classification approach leverages convolutional neural networks (CNN) and transfer learning to enhance skin classification. Different pre-trained models were applied, including VGG-Net, ResNet50, InceptionV3, Xception and DenseNet121. Additionally, the heavy class imbalance is examined as a critical problem for this dataset and multiple balancing techniques, such as weight balancing and data augmentation, are considered. Finally, an ensemble approach is evaluated by combining and averaging several CNN architectures to classify the seven different types of skin lesion. The experimental results indicate that the proposed frameworks exhibit promising results when compared with ISIC 2018 challenge live leaderboard.

Abstract:One of the most prevalent cancers in humans is skin cancer. The deadliest form of skin cancer is malignant melanoma and the incidence rate has increased rapidly in recent years. In the treatment of melanoma, early diagnosis is very critical. It is difficult and time consuming to automatically detect melanoma from images taken from dermoscopy devices. Computer-aided systems are needed, therefore. In this paper, a deep learning-based method for melanoma segmentation and classification with color images taken from dermoscopy devices is proposed. This technique uses ISIC 2017 International Skin Imaging Collaboration. In this paper, for segmentation and classification measures, 1317 skin images taken from the ISIC archive were used. The approach is based on the architecture of Preprocessing, U-Net and VGGNet. Operations such as mean subtraction, image normalization, image cropping, and scaling are implemented in the preprocessing phase. It is intended to make pictures of the skin more convenient before segmentation. The training precision rate and jaccard similarity coefficient reached 93% as a result of segmentation with these results, and the dice coefficient reached 79%. The accuracy rate is 85.5% as a result of the classification in the two-class dataset in the pre-trained VGG16 network. The accuracy rate of dataset classification obtained with cross-validation is 95.86%.

Abstract:This paper reports the method and evaluation results of MedAusbild team for ISIC challenge task. Since early 2017, our team has worked on melanoma classification [1][6], and has employed deep learning since beginning of 2018 [7]. Deep learning helps researchers absolutely to treat and detect diseases by analyzing medical data (e.g., medical images). One of the representative models among the various deep-learning models is a convolutional neural network (CNN). Although our team has an experience with segmentation and classification of benign and malignant skin-lesions, we have participated in the task 3 of ISIC Challenge 2018 for classification of seven skin diseases, explained in this paper.

Abstract:As skin cancer is one of the most frequent cancers globally, accurate, non-invasive dermoscopy-based diagnosis becomes essential and promising. A task of the Part 3 of the ISIC Skin Image Analysis Challenge at MICCAI 2018 is to predict seven disease classes with skin lesion images, including melanoma (MEL), melanocytic nevus (NV), basal cell carcinoma (BCC), actinic keratosis / Bowen's disease (intraepithelial carcinoma) (AKIEC), benign keratosis (solar lentigo / seborrheic keratosis / lichen planus-like keratosis) (BKL), dermatofibroma (DF) and vascular lesion (VASC) as defined by the International Dermatology Society. In this work, we design the WonDerM pipeline, that resamples the preprocessed skin lesion images, builds neural network architecture fine-tuned with segmentation task data (the Part 1), and uses an ensemble method to classify the seven skin diseases. Our model achieved an accuracy of 0.899 and 0.785 in the validation set and test set, respectively.

Abstract:Malignant melanoma has one of the most rapidly increasing incidences in the world and has a considerable mortality rate. Early diagnosis is particularly important since melanoma can be cured with prompt excision. Dermoscopy images play an important role in the non-invasive early detection of melanoma [1]. However, melanoma detection using human vision alone can be subjective, inaccurate and poorly reproducible even among experienced dermatologists. This is attributed to the challenges in interpreting images with diverse characteristics including lesions of varying sizes and shapes, lesions that may have fuzzy boundaries, different skin colors and the presence of hair [2]. Therefore, the automatic analysis of dermoscopy images is a valuable aid for clinical decision making and for image-based diagnosis to identify diseases such as melanoma [1-4]. Deep residual networks (ResNets) has achieved state-of-the-art results in image classification and detection related problems [5-8]. In this ISIC 2017 skin lesion analysis challenge [9], we propose to exploit the deep ResNets for robust visual features learning and representations.
DSNet: Automatic Dermoscopic Skin Lesion Segmentation

Abstract:Automatic segmentation of skin lesion is considered a crucial step in Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) for melanoma diagnosis. Despite its significance, skin lesion segmentation remains a challenging task due to their diverse color, texture, and indistinguishable boundaries and forms an open problem. Through this study, we present a new and automatic semantic segmentation network for robust skin lesion segmentation named Dermoscopic Skin Network (DSNet). In order to reduce the number of parameters to make the network lightweight, we used depth-wise separable convolution in lieu of standard convolution to project the learned discriminating features onto the pixel space at different stages of the encoder. Additionally, we implemented U-Net and Fully Convolutional Network (FCN8s) to compare against the proposed DSNet. We evaluate our proposed model on two publicly available datasets, namely ISIC-2017 and PH2. The obtained mean Intersection over Union (mIoU) is 77.5 % and 87.0 % respectively for ISIC-2017 and PH2 datasets which outperformed the ISIC-2017 challenge winner by 1.0 % with respect to mIoU. Our proposed network also outperformed U-Net and FCN8s respectively by 3.6 % and 6.8 % with respect to mIoU on the ISIC-2017 dataset. Our network for skin lesion segmentation outperforms other methods and can provide better segmented masks on two different test datasets which can lead to better performance in melanoma detection. Our trained model along with the source code and predicted masks are made publicly available.
