Abstract:We provide a general framework to construct colorings avoiding short monochromatic arithmetic progressions in Euclidean Ramsey theory. Specifically, if $\ell_m$ denotes $m$ collinear points with consecutive points of distance one apart, we say that $\mathbb{E}^n \not \to (\ell_r,\ell_s)$ if there is a red/blue coloring of $n$-dimensional Euclidean space that avoids red congruent copies of $\ell_r$ and blue congruent copies of $\ell_s$. We show that $\mathbb{E}^n \not \to (\ell_3, \ell_{20})$, improving the best-known result $\mathbb{E}^n \not \to (\ell_3, \ell_{1177})$ by Führer and Tóth, and also establish $\mathbb{E}^n \not \to (\ell_4, \ell_{18})$ and $\mathbb{E}^n \not \to (\ell_5, \ell_{10})$ in the spirit of the classical result $\mathbb{E}^n \not \to (\ell_6, \ell_{6})$ due to Erd{ő}s et. al. We also show a number of similar $3$-coloring results, as well as $\mathbb{E}^n \not \to (\ell_3, \alpha\ell_{6889})$, where $\alpha$ is an arbitrary positive real number. This final result answers a question of Führer and Tóth in the positive.

A Ramsey theorem for the reals

Abstract:We prove that for every colouring of pairs of reals with finitely-many colours, there is a set homeomorphic to the rationals which takes no more than two colours. This was conjectured by Galvin in 1970, and a colouring of Sierpi{ń}ski from 1933 witnesses that the number of colours cannot be reduced to one. Previously in 1985 Shelah had shown that a stronger statement is consistent with a forcing construction assuming the existence of large cardinals. Then in 2018 Raghavan and Todorčević had proved it assuming the existence of large cardinals. We prove it in $ZFC$. In fact Raghavan and Todorčević proved, assuming more large cardinals, a similar result for a large class of topological spaces. We prove this also, again in $ZFC$.

Non-spherical sets versus lines in Euclidean Ramsey theory

Abstract:We show that for every non-spherical set $X$ in $\mathbb{E}^d$, there exists a natural number $m$ and a red/blue-colouring of $\mathbb{E}^n$ for every $n$ such that there is no red copy of X and no blue progression of length $m$ with each consecutive point at distance $1$. This verifies a conjecture of Wu and the first author.

Abstract:In Euclidean Ramsey Theory usually we are looking for monochromatic configurations in the Euclidean space, whose points are colored with a fixed number of colors. In the canonical version, the number of colors is arbitrary, and we are looking for an `unavoidable' set of colorings of a finite configuration, that is a set of colorings with the property that one of them always appears in any coloring of the space. This set definitely includes the monochromatic and the rainbow colorings. In the present paper, we prove the following two results of this type. First, for any acute triangle $T$, and any coloring of $\mathbb{R}^3$, there is either a monochromatic or a rainbow copy of $T$. Second, for every $m$, there exists a sufficiently large $n$ such that in any coloring of $\mathbb{R}^n$, there exists either a monochromatic or a rainbow $m$-dimensional unit hypercube. In the maximum norm, $\ell_{\infty}$, we have a much stronger statement. For every finite $M$, there exits an $n$ such that in any coloring of $\mathbb{R}_\infty^n$, there is either a monochromatic or a rainbow isometric copy of $M$.

Abstract:The Euclidean Gallai–Ramsey problem, which investigates the existence of monochromatic or rainbow configurations in a colored n -dimensional Euclidean space , was introduced and studied recently. We further explore this problem for various configurations including triangles, squares, lines, and the structures with specific properties, such as rectangular and spherical configurations. Several of our new results provide refinements to the results presented in a recent work by Mao, Ozeki and Wang. One intriguing phenomenon evident on the Gallai–Ramsey results proven in this paper is that the dimensions of spaces are often independent of the number of colors. Our proofs primarily adopt a geometric perspective.

Some remarks on off-diagonal Ramsey numbers for vector spaces over $\mathbb{F}_{2}$

Abstract:For every positive integer $d$, we show that there must exist an absolute constant $c > 0$ such that the following holds: for any integer $n \geq cd^{7}$ and any red-blue coloring of the one-dimensional subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_{2}^{n}$, there must exist either a $d$-dimensional subspace for which all of its one-dimensional subspaces get colored red or a $2$-dimensional subspace for which all of its one-dimensional subspaces get colored blue. This answers recent questions of Nelson and Nomoto, and confirms that for any even plane binary matroid $N$, the class of $N$-free, claw-free binary matroids is polynomially $\chi$-bounded. Our argument will proceed via a reduction to a well-studied additive combinatorics problem, originally posed by Green: given a set $A \subset \mathbb{F}_{2}^{n}$ with density $\alpha \in [0,1]$, what is the largest subspace that we can find in $A+A$? Our main contribution to the story is a new result for this problem in the regime where $1/\alpha$ is large with respect to $n$, which utilizes ideas from the recent breakthrough paper of Kelley and Meka on sets of integers without three-term arithmetic progressions.

The Four-Color Ramsey Multiplicity of Triangles

Abstract:We study a generalization of a famous result of Goodman and establish that asymptotically at least a $1/256$ fraction of all triangles needs to be monochromatic in any four-coloring of the edges of a complete graph. We also show that any large enough extremal construction must be based on a blow-up of one of the two $R(3,3,3)$ Ramsey-colorings of $K_{16}$. This result is obtained through an efficient flag algebra formulation by exploiting problem-specific combinatorial symmetries that also allows us to study some related problems.

On a Problem of Ramsey Theory

Abstract:In 1955, Greenwood and Gleason showed that the Ramsey number R(3, 3, 3) = 17 by constructing an edge-chromatic graph on 16 vertices in three colors with no triangles. Their technique employed finite fields. This same result was obtained later by using another technique. In this article, we examine the complete graph on 17 vertices, K17, which can be represented as a regular polygon of 17 sides with all its diagonals. We color each edge of K17 with one of the three colors, blue, red or yellow. The graph thus obtained is called complete trichromatic graph K17^(3) (the superscript determines the number of colors). A triangle contained in graph K17^(3) with edges colored with one and only one color is called monochromatic. It has been shown that for any coloring of the K17^(3) edges, K17^(3) contains at least one monochromatic triangle. This article examines the problem of determining the minimum number of monochromatic triangles with the same color contained in K17^(3).

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the following Gallai-Ramsey question: how large must a complete bipartite graph $K_{n_1, n_2}$ be before any coloring of its edges with $r$ colors contains either a monochromatic copy of $G = K_{s,t}$ or a rainbow copy of $H = K_{s,t}$? We demonstrate that the answer is linear in $r$, and provide more precise bounds for the specific case $s = 2$. Furthermore, we also consider the following Euclidean Gallai-Ramsey question: given a configuration $H$ in Euclidean space, what is the smallest $n$ such that any $r$-coloring of $n$-dimensional Euclidean space contains a monochromatic or rainbow configuration congruent to $H$? Through a natural translation between edge colorings of the complete bipartite graph $K_{n_1,n_2}$ and colorings of a subset of $(n_1+n_2)$-dimensional Euclidean space, we prove new upper bounds on $n$ for some configurations which can be expressed as Cartesian products of simplices.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 1, Page 55-74, March 2024. A graph [math] is Ramsey for a pair of graphs [math] if any red/blue-coloring of the edges of [math] yields a copy of [math] with all edges colored red or a copy of [math] with all edges colored blue. Two pairs of graphs are called Ramsey equivalent if they have the same collection of Ramsey graphs. The symmetric setting, that is, the case [math], received considerable attention. This led to the open question whether there are connected graphs [math] and [math] such that [math] and [math] are Ramsey equivalent. We make progress on the asymmetric version of this question and identify several nontrivial families of Ramsey equivalent pairs of connected graphs. Certain pairs of stars provide a first, albeit trivial, example of Ramsey equivalent pairs of connected graphs. Our first result characterizes all Ramsey equivalent pairs of stars. The rest of the paper focuses on pairs of the form [math], where [math] is a tree and [math] is a complete graph. We show that if [math] belongs to a certain family of trees, including all nontrivial stars, then [math] is Ramsey equivalent to a family of pairs of the form [math], where [math] is obtained from [math] by attaching disjoint smaller cliques to some of its vertices. In addition, we establish that for [math] to be Ramsey equivalent to [math], [math] must have roughly this form. On the other hand, we prove that for many other trees [math], including all odd-diameter trees, [math] is not equivalent to any such pair, not even to the pair [math], where [math] is a complete graph [math] with a single edge attached.

Abstract:We investigate the existence of metric spaces which, for any coloring with a fixed number of colors, contain monochromatic isomorphic copies of a fixed starting space K. In the main theorem we construct such a space of size $2^{\aleph_0}$ for colorings with $\aleph_0$ colors and any metric space $K$ of size $\aleph_0$. We also give a slightly weaker theorem for countable ultrametric $K$ where, however, the resulting space has size~$\aleph_1$.

Abstract:A set of points $S$ in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$ is called \textit{Ramsey} if any finite partition of $\mathbb{R}^{\infty}$ yields a monochromatic copy of $S$. While characterization of Ramsey set remains a major open problem in the area, a stronger ``density'' concept was considered in [J. Amer. Math. Soc. 3, 1--7, 1990]: If $S$ is a $d$-dimensional simplex, then for any $\mu>0$ there is an integer $d:=d(S,\mu)$ and finite configuration $X\subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ such that any subconfiguration $Y\subseteq X$ with $|Y|\geq \mu |X|$ contains a copy of $S$. Complementing this, here we show the existence of $\mu:=\mu(S)$ and of an infinite configuration $X\subseteq \mathbb{R}^{\infty}$ with the property that any finite coloring of $X$ yields a monochromatic copy of $S$, yet for any finite set of points $Y\subseteq X$ contains a subset $Z\subseteq Y$ of size $|Z|\geq \mu |Y|$ without a copy of $S$.

Ramsey multiplicity and the Turán coloring

Abstract:Extending an earlier conjecture of Erdős, Burr and Rosta conjectured that among all two-colorings of the edges of a complete graph, the uniformly random coloring asymptotically minimizes the number of monochromatic copies of any fixed graph $H$. This conjecture was disproved independently by Sidorenko and Thomason. The first author later found quantitatively stronger counterexamples, using the Turán coloring, in which one of the two colors spans a balanced complete multipartite graph. We prove that the Turán coloring is extremal for an infinite family of graphs, and that it is the unique extremal coloring. This yields the first determination of the Ramsey multiplicity constant of a graph for which the Burr--Rosta conjecture fails. We also prove an analogous three-color result. In this case, our result is conditional on a certain natural conjecture on the behavior of two-color Ramsey numbers.

Abstract:We prove a theorem ensuring that the compositions of certain Ramsey families are still Ramsey. As an application, we show that in any finite coloring of $\mathbb{N}$ there is an infinite set $A$ and an as large as desired finite set $B$ with $(A+B)\cup (AB)$ monochromatic, answering a question from a recent paper of Kra, Moreira, Richter, and Robertson. In fact, we prove an iterated version of this result that also generalizes a Ramsey theorem of Bergelson and Moreira that was previously only known to hold for fields. Our main new technique is an extension of the color focusing method that involves trees rather than sequences.

Abstract:Let be a set of four points chosen independently, uniformly at random from a square. Join every pair of points of with a straight line segment. Color these edges red if they have positive slope and blue, otherwise. We show that the probability that defines a pair of crossing edges of the same color is equal to . This is connected to a recent result of Aichholzer et al. [1] who showed that by 2-colouring the edges of a geometric graph and counting monochromatic crossings instead of crossings, the number of crossings can be more than halved. Our result shows that for the described random drawings, there is a coloring of the edges such that the number of monochromatic crossings is in expectation of the total number of crossings.

A canonical Ramsey theorem with list constraints in random graphs

Abstract:The celebrated canonical Ramsey theorem of Erdős and Rado implies that for a given graph $H$, if $n$ is sufficiently large then any colouring of the edges of $K_n$ gives rise to copies of $H$ that exhibit certain colour patterns, namely monochromatic, rainbow or lexicographic. We are interested in sparse random versions of this result and the threshold at which the random graph $G(n,p)$ inherits the canonical Ramsey properties of $K_n$. Our main result here pins down this threshold when we focus on colourings that are constrained by some prefixed lists. This result is applied in an accompanying work of the authors on the threshold for the canonical Ramsey property (with no list constraints) in the case that $H$ is an even cycle.

Asymmetric Ramsey properties of randomly perturbed graphs

Abstract:In this note, we investigate for various pairs of graphs $(H,G)$ the question of how many random edges must be added to a dense graph to guarantee that any red-blue coloring of the edges contains a red copy of $H$ or a blue copy of $G$. We determine this perturbed Ramsey threshold for many new pairs of graphs and various ranges of densities, obtaining several generalizations of results obtained by Das and Treglown. In particular, we resolve the remaining cases toward determining the perturbed Ramsey threshold for pairs $(K_t,K_s)$ where $t\geq s\geq 5$.

Abstract:We applied the Ramsey analysis to the sets of points belonging to Riemannian manifolds. The points are connected with two kinds of lines: geodesic and non-geodesic. This interconnection between the points is mapped into the bi-colored, complete Ramsey graph. The selected points correspond to the vertices of the graph, which are connected with the bi-colored links. The complete bi-colored graph containing six vertices inevitably contains at least one mono-colored triangle; hence, a mono-colored triangle, built of the green or red links, i.e., non-geodesic or geodesic lines, consequently appears in the graph. We also considered the bi-colored, complete Ramsey graphs emerging from the intersection of two Riemannian manifolds. Two Riemannian manifolds, namely (M1,g1) and (M2,g2), represented by the Riemann surfaces which intersect along the curve (M1,g1)∩(M2,g2)=L were addressed. Curve L does not contain geodesic lines in either of the manifolds (M1,g1) and (M2,g2). Consider six points located on the L: {1,...6}⊂L. The points {1,...6}⊂L are connected with two distinguishable kinds of the geodesic lines, namely with the geodesic lines belonging to the Riemannian manifold (M1,g1)/red links, and, alternatively, with the geodesic lines belonging to the manifold (M2,g2)/green links. Points {1,...6}⊂L form the vertices of the complete graph, connected with two kinds of links. The emerging graph contains at least one closed geodesic line. The extension of the theorem to the Riemann surfaces of various Euler characteristics is presented.

Abstract:For bipartite graphs H 1 , … , H μ, μ ≥ 2, the μ-color bipartite Ramsey number, denoted by R b ( H 1 , … , H μ ), is the least positive integer N such that if we arbitrarily color the edges of a complete bipartite graph K N , N with μ colors, then it contains a monochromatic copy of H i in color i for some i, 1 ≤ i ≤ μ. Let C 4 and K 1 , n be a quadrilateral and a star on n + 1 vertices, respectively. In this paper, we show that the ( μ + 1 )-color bipartite Ramsey number R b ( C 4 , … , C 4 , K 1 , n ) ≤ n + ⌈ 1 2 μ 2 ( 4 n + μ 2 + 2 μ − 7 ) + 4 ⌉ + μ 2 + μ 2 − 1. Moreover, using algebraic methods, we construct Ramsey graphs or near Ramsey graphs and determine infinitely many values of R b ( C 4 , … , C 4 , K 1 , n ), which reach the upper bound if μ = 1 , 2 and are at most ⌊ μ 2 ⌋ less than the upper bound if μ ≥ 3.
