Abstract:We study how a single value of the shatter function of a set system restricts its asymptotic growth. Along the way, we refute a conjecture of Bondy and Hajnal which generalizes Sauer's Lemma.

Abstract:We say that a set system $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ shatters a given set $S\subseteq [n]$ if $2^S= \{F~\cap~S:~F~\in~\mathcal{F}\}$. The Sauer-Shelah lemma states that in general, a set system $\mathcal{F}$ shatters at least $|\mathcal{F}|$ sets. Here we concentrate on the case of equality. A set system is called \emph{shattering-extremal} if it shatters exactly $|\mathcal{F}|$ sets. A conjecture of Rónyai and the second author and of Litman and Moran states that if a family is shattering-extremal then one can add a set to it and the resulting family is still shattering-extremal. Here we prove this conjecture for a class of set systems defined from Sperner families.

Abstract:A family $\mathcal{F}$ of subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ shatters a set $A \subseteq [n]$ if for every $A' \subseteq A$ there is an $F \in \mathcal{F}$ such that $F \cap A=A'$. We develop a framework to analyze $f(n,k,d)$, the maximum possible number of subsets of $[n]$ of size $d$ that can be shattered by a family of size $k$. Among other results, we determine $f(n,k,d)$ exactly for $d \leq 2$ and show that if $d$ and $n$ grow, with both $d$ and $n-d$ tending to infinity, then, for any $k$ satisfying $2^d \leq k \leq (1+o(1))2^d$, we have $f(n,k,d)=(1+o(1))c\binom{n}{d}$, where $c$, roughly $0.289$, is the probability that a large square matrix over $\mathbb{F}_2$ is invertible. This latter result extends work of Das and Mészáros. As an application, we improve bounds for the existence of covering arrays for certain alphabet sizes.

Abstract:We say that a set system $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ shatters a set $S\subseteq [n]$ if every possible subset of $S$ appears as the intersection of $S$ with some element of $\mathcal{F}$ and we denote by $\text{Sh}(\mathcal{F})$ the family of sets shattered by $\mathcal{F}$. According to the Sauer-Shelah lemma we know that in general, every set system $\mathcal{F}$ shatters at least $|\mathcal{F}|$ sets and we call a set system shattering-extremal if $|\text{Sh}(\mathcal{F})|=|\mathcal{F}|$. Mészáros and Rónyai, among other things, gave an algebraic characterization of shattering-extremality, which offered the possibility to generalize the notion to general finite point sets. Here we extend the results obtained for set systems to this more general setting, and as an application, strengthen a result of Li, Zhang and Dong.

Small families of partially shattering permutations

Abstract:We say that a family of permutations $t$-shatters a set if it induces at least $t$ distinct permutations on that set. What is the minimum number $f_k(n,t)$ of permutations of $\{1, \dots, n\}$ that $t$-shatter all subsets of size $k$? For $t \le 2$, $f_k(n,t) = \Theta(1)$. Spencer showed that $f_k(n,t) = \Theta(\log \log n)$ for $3 \le t \le k$ and $f_k(n,k!) = \Theta(\log n)$. In 1996, Füredi asked whether partial shattering with permutations must always fall into one of these three regimes. Johnson and Wickes recently settled the case $k = 3$ affirmatively and proved that $f_k(n,t) = \Theta(\log n)$ for $t > 2 (k-1)!$. We give a surprising negative answer to the question of Füredi by showing that a fourth regime exists for $k \ge 4$. We establish that $f_k(n,t) = \Theta(\sqrt{\log n})$ for certain values of $t$ and prove that this is the only other regime when $k = 4$. We also show that $f_k(n,t) = \Theta(\log n)$ for $t > 2^{k-1}$. This greatly narrows the range of $t$ for which the asymptotic behaviour of $f_k(n,t)$ is unknown.

Abstract:We examine the distributions of non-commutative polynomials of non-atomic, freely independent random variables. In particular, we obtain an analogue of the Strong Atiyah Conjecture for free groups thus proving that the measure of each atom of any $n \times n$ matricial polynomial of non-atomic, freely independent random variables is an integer multiple of $n^{-1}$. In addition, we show that the Cauchy transform of the distribution of any matricial polynomial of freely independent semicircular variables is algebraic and thus the polynomial has a distribution that is real-analytic except at a finite number of points.

Abstract:We study higher uniformity properties of the von Mangoldt function $\Lambda$, the Möbius function $\mu$, and the divisor functions $d_k$ on short intervals $(x,x+H]$ for almost all $x \in [X, 2X]$. Let $\Lambda^\sharp$ and $d_k^\sharp$ be suitable approximants of $\Lambda$ and $d_k$, $G/\Gamma$ a filtered nilmanifold, and $F\colon G/\Gamma \to \mathbb{C}$ a Lipschitz function. Then our results imply for instance that when $X^{1/3+\varepsilon} \leq H \leq X$ we have, for almost all $x \in [X, 2X]$, \[ \sup_{g \in \text{Poly}(\mathbb{Z} \to G)} \left| \sum_{x < n \leq x+H} (\Lambda(n)-\Lambda^\sharp(n)) \overline{F}(g(n)\Gamma) \right| \ll H\log^{-A} X \] for any fixed $A>0$, and that when $X^{\varepsilon} \leq H \leq X$ we have, for almost all $x \in [X, 2X]$, \[ \sup_{g \in \text{Poly}(\mathbb{Z} \to G)} \left| \sum_{x < n \leq x+H} (d_k(n)-d_k^\sharp(n)) \overline{F}(g(n)\Gamma) \right| = o(H \log^{k-1} X). \] As a consequence, we show that the short interval Gowers norms $\|\Lambda-\Lambda^\sharp\|_{U^s(X,X+H]}$ and $\|d_k-d_k^\sharp\|_{U^s(X,X+H]}$ are also asymptotically small for any fixed $s$ in the same ranges of $H$. This in turn allows us to establish the Hardy-Littlewood conjecture and the divisor correlation conjecture with a short average over one variable. Our main new ingredients are type $II$ estimates obtained by developing a "contagion lemma" for nilsequences and then using this to "scale up" an approximate functional equation for the nilsequence to a larger scale. This extends an approach developed by Walsh for Fourier uniformity.

Several assertions are proved about the estimation of the asymptotics of the probabilistic characteristics of strongly additive arithmetic functions, as well as additive functions of the class that have the same asymptotic behavior of the probabilistic characteristics, as for strongly additive arithmetic functions.

Abstract:We introduce a strategy to tackle some known obstructions of current approaches to the Fourier uniformity conjecture. Assuming GRH, we then show the conjecture holds for intervals of length at least $(\log X)^{\psi(X)}$, with $\psi(X) \rightarrow \infty$ an arbitrarily slowly growing function of $X$. We expect the methods should adapt to nilsequences, thus also showing that the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis implies close to exponential growth in the sign patterns of the Liouville function.

Abstract:The objective is to prove the asynchronous exponential growth of the growth-fragmentation equation in large weighted $L^1$ spaces and under general assumptions on the coefficients. The key argument is the creation of moments for the solutions to the Cauchy problem, resulting from the unboundedness of the total fragmentation rate. It allows us to prove the quasi-compactness of the associated (rescaled) semigroup, which in turn provides the exponential convergence toward the projector on the Perron eigenfunction.

Abstract:We characterize the limiting distributions of random variables of the form $P_n\left( (X_i)_{i \ge 1} \right)$, where: (i) $(P_n)_{n \ge 1}$ is a sequence of multivariate polynomials, each potentially involving countably many variables; (ii) there exists a constant $D \ge 1$ such that for all $n \ge 1$, the degree of $P_n$ is bounded above by $D$; (iii) $(X_i)_{i \ge 1}$ is a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables, each with zero mean, unit variance, and finite moments of all orders. More specifically, we prove that the limiting distributions of these random variables can always be represented as the law of $P_\infty\left( (X_i, G_i)_{i \ge 1} \right)$, where $P_\infty$ is a polynomial of degree at most $D$ (potentially involving countably many variables), and $(G_i)_{i \ge 1}$ is a sequence of independent standard Gaussian random variables, which is independent of $(X_i)_{i \ge 1}$. We solve this problem in full generality, addressing both Gaussian and non-Gaussian inputs, and with no extra assumption on the coefficients of the polynomials. In the Gaussian case, our proof builds upon several original tools of independent interest, including a new criterion for central convergence based on the concept of maximal directional influence. Beyond asymptotic normality, this novel notion also enables us to derive quantitative bounds on the degree of the polynomial representing the limiting law. We further develop techniques regarding asymptotic independence and dimensional reduction. To conclude for polynomials with non-Gaussian inputs, we combine our findings in the Gaussian case with invariance principles.

This is the first quantitatively effective version of the Bergelson–Leibman polynomial Szemerédi theorem for a progression involving polynomials of differing degrees. Our key innovation is an inverse theorem characterising sets for which the number of configurations , , deviates substantially from the expected value. In proving this, we develop the first effective instance of a concatenation theorem of Tao and Ziegler, with polynomial bounds.

Abstract:This paper considers a problem that relates to the theories of covering arrays, permutation patterns, Vapnik-Chervonenkis (VC) classes, and probability thresholds. Specifically, we want to find the number of subsets of [n]:={1,2,....,n} we need to randomly select, in a certain probability space, so as to respectively "shatter" all t-subsets of [n]. Moving from subsets to words, we ask for the number of n-letter words on a q-letter alphabet that are needed to shatter all t-subwords of the q^n words of length n. Finally, we explore the number of random permutations of [n] needed to shatter (specializing to t=3), all length 3 permutation patterns in specified positions. We uncover a very sharp zero-one probability threshold for the emergence of such shattering; Talagrand's isoperimetric inequality in product spaces is used as a key tool.

Finding lower bounds on the growth and entropy of subshifts over countable groups

Abstract:We give a lower bound on the growth of a subshift based on a simple condition on the set of forbidden patterns defining that subshift. Aubrun et Al. showed a similar result based on the Lovász Local Lemma for subshift over any countable group and Bernshteyn extended their approach to deduce, amongst other things, some lower bound on the exponential growth of the subshift. However, our result has a simpler proof, is easier to use for applications, and provides better bounds on the applications from their articles (although it is not clear that our result is stronger in general). In the particular case of subshift over $\mathbb{Z}$ a similar but weaker condition given by Miller was known to imply nonemptiness of the associated shift. Pavlov used the same approach to provide a condition that implied exponential growth. We provide a version of our result for this particular setting and it is provably strictly stronger than the result of Pavlov and the result of Miller (and, in practice, leads to considerable improvement in the applications). We also apply our two results to a few different problems including strongly aperiodic subshifts, nonrepetitive subshifts, and Kolmogorov complexity of subshifts.

Abstract:For years limited Monte Carlo simulations have led to the suspicion that the time to failure of hierarchically organized load-transfer models of fracture is non-zero for sets of infinite size. This fact could have a profound significance in engineering practice and also in geophysics. Here, we develop an exact algebraic iterative method to compute the successive time intervals for individual breaking in systems of height $n$ in terms of the information calculated in the previous height $n-1$. As a byproduct of this method, rigorous lower and higher bounds for the time to failure of very large systems are easily obtained. The asymptotic behavior of the resulting lower bound leads to the evidence that the above mentioned suspicion is actually true.

Large-scale geometry of Borel graphs of polynomial growth

Abstract:We study graphs of polynomial growth from the perspective of asymptotic geometry and descriptive set theory. The starting point of our investigation is a theorem of Krauthgamer and Lee who showed that every connected graph of polynomial growth admits an injective contraction mapping to $(\mathbb Z^n, \|\cdot\|_\infty)$ for some $n\in\mathbb N$. We strengthen and generalize this result in a number of ways. In particular, answering a question of Papasoglu, we construct coarse embeddings from graphs of polynomial growth to $\mathbb Z^n$. Moreover, we only require $n$ to be linear in the asymptotic polynomial growth rate of the graph; this confirms a conjecture of Levin and Linial, London, and Rabinovich "in the asymptotic sense." (The exact form of the conjecture was refuted by Krauthgamer and Lee.) All our results are proved for Borel graphs, which allows us to settle a number of problems in descriptive combinatorics. Roughly, we prove that graphs generated by free Borel actions of $\mathbb Z^n$ are universal for the class of Borel graphs of polynomial growth. This provides a general method for extending results about $\mathbb Z^n$-actions to all Borel graphs of polynomial growth. For example, an immediate consequence of our main result is that all Borel graphs of polynomial growth are hyperfinite, which answers a well-known question in the area. As another illustration, we show that Borel graphs of polynomial growth support a certain combinatorial structure called toast. An important technical tool in our arguments is the notion of padded decomposition from computer science, which is closely related to the concept of asymptotic dimension due to Gromov. Along the way we find an alternative, probabilistic proof of a theorem of Papasoglu that graphs of asymptotic polynomial growth rate $\rho<\infty$ have asymptotic dimension at most $\rho$ and establish the same bound in the Borel setting.

Abstract:We study higher uniformity properties of the Möbius function $\mu$, the von Mangoldt function $\Lambda$, and the divisor functions $d_k$ on short intervals $(X,X+H]$ with $X^{\theta+\varepsilon} \leq H \leq X^{1-\varepsilon}$ for a fixed constant $0 \leq \theta < 1$ and any $\varepsilon>0$. More precisely, letting $\Lambda^\sharp$ and $d_k^\sharp$ be suitable approximants of $\Lambda$ and $d_k$ and $\mu^\sharp = 0$, we show for instance that, for any nilsequence $F(g(n)\Gamma)$, we have \[ \sum_{X < n \leq X+H} (f(n)-f^\sharp(n)) F(g(n) \Gamma) \ll H \log^{-A} X \] when $\theta = 5/8$ and $f \in \{\Lambda, \mu, d_k\}$ or $\theta = 1/3$ and $f = d_2$. As a consequence, we show that the short interval Gowers norms $\|f-f^\sharp\|_{U^s(X,X+H]}$ are also asymptotically small for any fixed $s$ for these choices of $f,\theta$. As applications, we prove an asymptotic formula for the number of solutions to linear equations in primes in short intervals, and show that multiple ergodic averages along primes in short intervals converge in $L^2$. Our innovations include the use of multi-parameter nilsequence equidistribution theorems to control type $II$ sums, and an elementary decomposition of the neighbourhood of a hyperbola into arithmetic progressions to control type $I_2$ sums.
