Abstract:We introduce the cosmological analysis of the Dirac-Born-Infeld dRGT massive gravity theory which is a new extension of de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity. In this theory, we consider the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) scalar field which is coupled to the graviton field. Moreover, we perform the cosmological background equations, and we demonstrate the self-accelerating background solutions. We show that the theory consists of self-accelerating solutions with an effective cosmological constant. In the following, we exhibit tensor perturbations analyses and achieve the dispersion relation of gravitational waves. We analyze the propagation of gravitational perturbation in the Friedmann-Lema??tre-Robertson-Walker cosmology in the DBI dRGT massive gravity. Finally, we present the vector and scalar perturbations to show the stability conditions of the theory.

Abstract:We consider evolving, spatially flat isotropic and homogeneous (FLRW) cosmologies in ghost-free (dRGT) massive gravity. In this theory, no dynamical flat FLRW background exists if the reference metric is chosen to be Minkowski and the Stueckelberg fields are homogeneous. Relaxing the assumptions on the Stueckelberg profiles gives access to dynamical backgrounds. We propose a classification of the viable flat FLRW cosmological solutions of dRGT massive gravity. Instead of specifying an initial ansatz for the Stueckelberg fields $\phi^a$ and the reference metric $f_{ab}$, we show that imposing homogeneity and isotropy on the square root tensor $X^{\mu}_{\nu}=\left(\sqrt{g^{-1}\partial\phi^a \partial\phi^bf_{ab}}\right)^{\mu}_{\nu}$ leads to dynamical cosmological solutions, and we characterize their properties. These solutions become dynamical only when the Stueckelberg fields acquire a sufficiently inhomogeneous and/or anisotropic profile. We explore the consequences for the minimal model and the complete dRGT theory, and show that perturbations are strongly coupled, at the quadratic level, on these backgrounds.

Abstract:As massive gravity and its extensions offer physically well-defined gravitational theories with a nonzero graviton mass, we present a new extension of the de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity, which is tachyonic massive gravity theory. We firstly introduce the new extension of the dRGT massive gravity, constructed by adding a tachyonic term. We then find the cosmological background equations, and present the analysis of self-accelerating solutions. We examine the tensor perturbations to calculate the dispersion relation of gravitational waves (GWs). In a special case, we consider a constant tachyon potential for the tachyon field σ, V (σ) = 2ω/M Pl, and calculate the equations of motion and the self-accelerating solutions. Finally, we investigate the background perturbations, which include tensor, vector, and scalar perturbations in this case. We calculate the dispersion relation of GWs in the Friedmann-Lemâıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmology in a tachyonic massive gravity theory. These analyses provide potential inputs to future applications in cosmology and GW propagations.

Abstract:We consider a class of modified gravity models where the terms added to the standard Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian are just a function of the metric only. For linearized perturbations around an isotropic space-time, this class of models is entirely specified by a rank 4 tensor that encodes possibly time-dependent masses for the gravitons. This tensor has the same symmetries as an elasticity tensor, suggesting an interpretation of massive gravity as an effective rigidity of space-time. If we choose a form for this tensor which is compatible with the symmetries of FRW and enforce full reparameterization invariance, then the only theory possible is a cosmological constant. However, in the case where the theory is only time translation invariant, the ghost-free massive gravity theory is equivalent to the elastic dark energy scenario with the extra Lorentz violating vector giving rise to 2 transverse and 1 longitudinal degrees of freedom, whereas when one demands spatial translation invariance one is left with scalar field theory with a non-standard kinetic term.

Cosmology of F(R) Nonlinear Massive Gravity

Abstract:The theory of nonlinear massive gravity can be extended into the F(R) form as developed by Cai et al. [Phys. Rev. D 90, 064051 (2014)]. Being free of the Boulware-Deser ghost, such a construction has the additional advantage of exhibiting no linear instabilities around a cosmological background. We investigate various cosmological evolutions of a universe governed by this generalized massive gravitational theory. Specifically, under the Starobinsky Ansatz, this model provides a unified description of the cosmological history, from early-time inflation to late-time self-acceleration. Moreover, under viable F(R) forms, the scenario leads to a very interesting dark energy phenomenology, including the realization of the quintom scenario without any pathology. Finally, we provide a detailed analysis of the cosmological perturbations at linear order, as well as the Hamiltonian constraint analysis, in order to examine the physical degrees of freedom.

Abstract:We perform a detailed dynamical analysis of various cosmological scenarios in extended (varying-mass) nonlinear massive gravity. Due to the enhanced freedom in choosing the involved free functions, this cosmological paradigm allows for a huge variety of solutions that can attract the universe at late times, comparing to scalar-field cosmology or usual nonlinear massive gravity. Amongst others, it accepts quintessence, phantom, or cosmological-constant-like late-time solutions, which moreover can alleviate the coincidence problem. These features seem to be general and non-sensitive to the imposed ansantzes and model parameters, and thus extended nonlinear massive gravity can be a good candidate for the description of nature.

Abstract:This study explores the cosmological implications of the Myrzakulov $F(R, T)$ quasi-dilaton massive gravity theory, a modification of the de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity theory. Our analysis focuses on the self-accelerating solution of the background equations of motion, which are shown to exist in the theory. Notably, we find that the theory features an effective cosmological constant corresponding to the massive graviton, which has important implications for our understanding of the universe's accelerated expansion. To assess the validity of the Myrzakulov $F(R, T)$ quasi-dilaton massive gravity theory, we employ two datasets: the Union2 Type Ia Supernovae (SNIa) dataset, consisting of 557 observations, and the Pantheon SNIa data, which includes 1048 SNe I-a events gathered from diverse SN I-a samples. Our results demonstrate that the theory is capable of explaining the accelerated expansion of the universe without requiring the presence of dark energy. This finding supports the potential of the Myrzakulov $F(R, T)$ quasi-dilaton massive gravity theory as an alternative explanation for the observed cosmic acceleration. Moreover, we investigate the properties of tensor perturbations within the framework of this theory and derive a novel expression for the dispersion relation of gravitational waves. Our analysis reveals interesting features of the modified dispersion relation in the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmology, providing new insights into the nature of gravitational waves in the context of the Myrzakulov $F(R, T)$ quasi-dilaton massive gravity theory.

The Cosmological Impact of Brane-Chern-Simons Massive Gravity

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel extension of massive gravity theory; the Brane-Chern-Simons massive gravity theory. We explore the cosmological implications of this theory by deriving the background equations and demonstrating the existence of self-accelerating solutions. Interestingly, our theory suggests the existence of self-accelerating mechanisms that originate from an effective cosmological constant, leading to intriguing possibilities for understanding the nature of cosmic acceleration. Furthermore, we perform a tensor perturbation analysis to investigate the propagation of gravitational waves in this framework. We derive the dispersion relation for gravitational waves and study their behavior in the Friedmann-Lemaître-Roberson-Waker cosmology within the context of Brane-Chen-Simons massive gravity. Utilizing the latest Union2 type Ia supernova dataset comprising $557$ SNIa events, we provide observational support for our theoretical framework, indicating that the Brane-Chern-Simons massive gravity theory is consistent with cosmological observations.

Abstract:Here, we study the generalized second law (GSL) of thermodynamics in the framework of massive gravity. To do this, we consider a FRW universe filled only with matter and enclosed by the apparent horizon. In addition, we consider two models including generalized massive gravity (GMG) as well as dRGT massive gravity on de Sitter. For both models, we first study the dynamics of background cosmology and then explore the validity of GSL. We conclude that for the selected values of model parameters the GSL is respected.

Abstract:We present the cosmological analysis of the Gauss-Bonnet quasi-dilaton massive gravity theory. This offers a gravitational theory with a non-zero graviton mass. We calculate the complete set of background equations of motion. Also, we obtain the self-accelerating background solutions and we present the constraints on parameters to indicate the correct sign of parameters. In addition, we analyse tensor perturbations and calculate the mass of graviton and find the dispersion relation of gravitational waves for two cases. Finally, we investigate the propagation of gravitational perturbation in the FLRW cosmology in the Gauss-Bonnet quasi-dilaton massive gravity.
A well-posed formulation of minimal dRGT massive gravity

Abstract:Ghost-free dRGT massive gravity is a subtle theory, even at the classical level. Its viability depends on Vainshtein screening, which is an intrinsically non-linear phenomenon, and thus understanding the full non-linear dynamics of the theory is crucial. The theory was not expected to have a well-posed hyperbolic formulation as it is usually interpreted as a low energy EFT, and hence its short distance physics would be modified by higher derivative operators. Here we study a new dynamical formulation of the theory for the case of the minimal mass term. This firstly involves using a harmonic formulation of the theory, and then writing it as a first order system. Surprisingly we are able to cast it in a form that we argue is strongly hyperbolic for generic metrics suitably close to Minkowski, so that its Cauchy evolution problem is well-posed. Interestingly, as part of the analysis, we find that the characteristics of the spin two graviton mode are simply governed by the inverse metric on a general background.

Abstract:We propose a nonlinear massive gravitational theory which includes F(R) modifications. This construction inherits the benefits of the de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley model and is free of the Boulware-Deser ghost due to the existence of a Hamiltonian constraint accompanied by a nontrivial secondary one. The scalar perturbations in a cosmological background can be stabilized at the linear level for a wide class of the F(R) models. The linear scalar mode arisen from the F(R) sector can absorb the nonlinear longitudinal graviton, and hence, our scenario demonstrates the possibility of a gravitational Goldstone theorem. Finally, due to the combined contribution of the F(R) and graviton-mass sectors, the proposed theory allows for a large class of cosmological evolutions, such as the simultaneous and unified description of inflation and late-time acceleration.

Abstract:In this review we present a thoroughly comprehensive survey of recent work on modified theories of gravity and their cosmological consequences. Amongst other things, we cover General Relativity, scalar–tensor, Einstein–æther, and Bimetric theories, as well as TeVeS, f(R), general higher-order theories, Hořava–Lifschitz gravity, Galileons, Ghost Condensates, and models of extra dimensions including Kaluza–Klein, Randall–Sundrum, DGP, and higher co-dimension braneworlds. We also review attempts to construct a Parameterised Post-Friedmannian formalism, that can be used to constrain deviations from General Relativity in cosmology, and that is suitable for comparison with data on the largest scales. These subjects have been intensively studied over the past decade, largely motivated by rapid progress in the field of observational cosmology that now allows, for the first time, precision tests of fundamental physics on the scale of the observable Universe. The purpose of this review is to provide a reference tool for researchers and students in cosmology and gravitational physics, as well as a self-contained, comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to the subject as a whole.
Cosmological Applications of F(T,T-G) Gravity

Abstract:We investigate the cosmological applications of F(T, T-G) gravity, which is a novel modified gravitational theory based on the torsion invariant T and the teleparallel equivalent of the Gauss-Bonnet term T-G. F(T, T-G) gravity differs from both F(T) theories as well as from F(R, G) class of curvature modified gravity, and thus its corresponding cosmology proves to be very interesting. In particular, it provides a unified description of the cosmological history from early-times inflation to late-times self-acceleration, without the inclusion of a cosmological constant. Moreover, the dark energy equation-of-state parameter can be quintessence or phantomlike, or experience the phantom-divide crossing, depending on the parameters of the model.

Abstract:We find exact solutions of topologically massive gravity (TMG) and new massive gravity (NMG) in dimensions (3D) with an arbitrary cosmological constant, pure radiation, and gyratons, i.e., with possibly non-zero and in canonical coordinates. Since any `reasonable' geometry in 3D (i.e., admitting a null geodesic congruence) is either expanding Robinson-Trautman ( ) or Kundt ( ), we focus on these two classes. Assuming expansions (`GR-like' Robinson-Trautman) or (general Kundt), we systematically integrate the field equations of TMG and NMG and identify new classes of exact solutions. The case of NMG contains an additional assumption of being quadratic in , which is automatically enforced in TMG as well as in 3D GR. In each case, we reduce the field equations as much as possible and identify new classes of solutions. We also discuss various special subclasses and study some explicit solutions.

Abstract:The dRGT massive gravity represent a comprehensive theory which properly describes massive graviton field. Latterly, the exact spherical solutions are identified for the black hole in the dRGT massive gravity theory. In this paper, we derive Bousso's D-bound entropy for the black hole solutions of dRGT massive gravity. By an entropic consideration which provides a criterion, it is demonstrated that the relation between the D-bound and Bekenstein entropy bound imposes some constraints on the structure parameters of black hole solutions in dRGT massive gravity.

Abstract:The current standard cosmological model is constructed within the framework of general relativity with a cosmological constant $\Lambda$, which is often associated with dark energy, and phenomenologically explains the accelerated cosmic expansion. Understanding the nature of dark energy is one of the most appealing questions in achieving a self-consistent physical model at cosmological scales. Modification of general relativity could potentially provide a more natural and physical solution to the accelerated expansion. The growth of the cosmic structure is sensitive in constraining gravity models. In this paper, we aim to provide a concise introductory review of modified gravity models from an observational point of view. We will discuss various mainstream cosmological observables, and their potential advantages and limitations as probes of gravity models.
