Abstract:We consider a time-homogeneous Markov chain $X_n$, $n\ge0$, valued in ${\bf R}$. Suppose that this chain is transient, that is, $X_n$ generates a $\sigma$-finite renewal measure. We prove the key renewal theorem under condition that this chain has asymptotically homogeneous at infinity jumps and asymptotically positive drift.

Stochastic Processes and their Applications

Abstract:We derive subexponential tail asymptotics for the distribution of the maximum of a compound renewal process with linear component and of a Lévy process, both with negative drift, over random time horizon τ that does not depend on the future increments of the process. Our asymptotic results are uniform over the whole class of such random times. Particular examples are given by stopping times and by τ independent of the processes. We link our results with random walk theory.

Abstract:Let $(Z_n)_{n\geq 0}$ be a critical branching process in a random environment defined by a Markov chain $(X_n)_{n\geq 0}$ with values in a finite state space $\mathbb X$. Let $ S_n = \sum_{k=1}^n \ln f_{X_k}'(1)$ be the Markov walk associated to $(X_n)_{n\geq 0}$, where $f_i$ is the offspring generating function when the environment is $i \in \mathbb X$. Conditioned on the event $\{ Z_n>0\}$, we show the non degeneracy of limit law of the normalized number of particles ${Z_n}/{e^{S_n}}$ and determine the limit of the law of $\frac{S_n}{\sqrt{n}} $ jointly with $X_n$. Based on these results we establish a Yaglom-type theorem which specifies the limit of the joint law of $ \log Z_n$ and $X_n$ given $Z_n>0$.

Abstract:We derive some key extremal features for stationary kth-order Markov chains that can be used to understand how the process moves between an extreme state and the body of the process. The chains are studied given that there is an exceedance of a threshold, as the threshold tends to the upper endpoint of the distribution. Unlike previous studies with , we consider processes where standard limit theory describes each extreme event as a single observation without any information about the transition to and from the body of the distribution. Our work uses different asymptotic theory which results in non-degenerate limit laws for such processes. We study the extremal properties of the initial distribution and the transition probability kernel of the Markov chain under weak assumptions for broad classes of extremal dependence structures that cover both asymptotically dependent and asymptotically independent Markov chains. For chains with , the transition of the chain away from the exceedance involves novel functions of the k previous states, in comparison to just the single value, when . This leads to an increase in the complexity of determining the form of this class of functions, their properties, and the method of their derivation in applications. We find that it is possible to derive an affine normalization, dependent on the threshold excess, such that non-degenerate limiting behaviour of the process, in the neighbourhood of the threshold excess, is assured for all lags. We find that these normalization functions have an attractive structure that has parallels to the Yule–Walker equations. Furthermore, the limiting process is always linear in the innovations. We illustrate the results with the study of kth-order stationary Markov chains with exponential margins based on widely studied families of copula dependence structures.

Abstract:We prove several forms of renewal theorem tailored to renewal processes with marks and clusters. In particular, for an i.i.d. sequence $(\xi_i,X_i)_{i \geq 0}$, where $\xi_0$ denotes a finite point process on $\mathbb{R}$ and $X_0$ denotes a nonnegative random variable of finite mean, we consider the renewal sequence $T_i = X_0+\cdots + X_i$, $i \geq 0$, and corresponding renewal cluster process $ \xi(\cdot )=\sum_{i\geq0}\xi_i(\,\cdot -T_i)$. Under mild assumptions on the distribution of $(\xi,X)$, we show by coupling methods that the generalized versions of Blackwell's renewal theorem, key renewal theorem, extended renewal theorem and elementary renewal theorem still hold, even with dependence between $\xi_i$'s and $X_i$'s.

Abstract:In this paper, our objective is to derive two-sided bounds for the renewal function even if the interarrival times have no finite moment. By proving a relationship between the renewal function and a suitable 'truncated' compound geometric distribution, under a truncated generalized Lundberg condition for proper renewal equations, we derive upper and lower bounds for this truncated compound geometric distribution. Using this relationship, we obtain bounds for the renewal function. Under specific truncated generalized Lundberg conditions, we obtain two-sided exponential-type bounds and Pareto-type lower bounds for the renewal function. Also, by proving a relationship between the excess lifetime of a renewal process and the df of a suitable 'truncated deficit at ruin' of a renewal risk (or Sparre Andersen) model, we obtain two-sided exponential bounds for the df of the excess lifetime.

Abstract:We give a generalization of the ergodic theorem for semi-Markov linear-type processes. This generalization is proved for the case when a common support of distributions defining this process is not arithmetic. Also we give an uniform estimate of expectations of the forward renewal time. These facts are based on the key renewal (Walter Smith's) theorem, and they are very useful in research in the queueing theory.
Limit theorems for supercritical remaining-lifetime age-structured branching processes

Abstract:We study supercritical age-structured branching models starting from a single particle with a random lifetime, where the reproduction law depends on the remaining lifetime of the parent. The lifespan of an individual is decided at its birth and its remaining lifetime decreases at the unit speed. A necessary and sufficient condition is provided for the convergence of the Malthusian normalized random measures. The Malthusian type limit theory in a functional form can be strengthened to hold with probability one under some ``$L\log L$'' conditions. We further prove a central limit theory with a random normalization factor.

Abstract:The renewal process is a key statistical model for describing a wide range of stochastic systems in Physics. This work investigates the behavior of the probability distribution of the number of renewals in renewal processes in the short-time limit, with a focus on cases where the number of renewals is large. We find that the specific details of the sojourn time distribution $\phi(\tau)$ in this limit can significantly modify the behavior in the large-number-of-renewals regime. We explore both non-equilibrium and equilibrium renewal processes, deriving results for various forms of $\phi(\tau)$. Using saddle point approximations, we analyze cases where $\phi(\tau)$ follows a power-series expansion, includes a cutoff, or exhibits non-analytic behavior near $\tau = 0$. Additionally, we show how the short-time properties of $\phi(\tau)$ shape the decay of the number of renewals in equilibrium compared to non-equilibrium renewal processes. The probability of the number of renewals plays a crucial role in determining rare event behaviors, such as Laplace tails. The results obtained here are expected to help advance the development of a theoretical framework for rare events in transport processes in complex systems.

Abstract:We investigate branching processes in nearly degenerate varying environment, where the offspring distribution converges to the degenerate distribution at 1. Such processes die out almost surely, therefore, we condition on non-extinction or add inhomogeneous immigration. Extending our one-dimensional limit results we derive functional limit theorems. In the former case, the limiting process is a time-changed simple birth-and-death process on $(-\infty, 0]$ conditioned on survival at $0$, while in the latter, it is a time-changed stationary continuous time branching process with immigration.

Abstract:By using limit distribution of Markov skeleton processes,the article studies homogeneous denumerable semi-Markov processes and obtains their limit distribution.When the distribution of renewal interval is non-lattice,the result obtained in this paper is consistent with that in [1],but the approaches this article used are Markov skeleton processes approaches which differ from [1].Furthermore,when the distribution of renewal interval is lattice,this paper gives the result,whereas [1] didn't study this case.Finally,this article generalizes the limit distribution of homogeneous denumerable semi-Markov processes,and illustrates the result through one example.
Transience and Recurrence of Markov Processes with Constrained Local Time

Abstract:We study Markov processes conditioned so that their local time must grow slower than a prescribed function. Building upon recent work on Brownian motion with constrained local time in [5] and [33], we study transience and recurrence for a broad class of Markov processes. In order to understand the distribution of the local time, we determine the distribution of a non-decreasing Lévy process (the inverse local time) conditioned to remain above a given level which varies in time. We study a time-dependent region, in contrast to previous works in which a process is conditioned to remain in a fixed region (e.g. [21,27]), so we must study boundary crossing probabilities for a family of curves, and thus obtain uniform asymptotics for such a family. Main results include necessary and sufficient conditions for transience or recurrence of the conditioned Markov process. We will explicitly determine the distribution of the inverse local time for the conditioned process, and in the transient case, we explicitly determine the law of the conditioned Markov process. In the recurrent case, we characterise the "entropic repulsion envelope" via necessary and sufficient conditions.

Abstract:In this paper we establish some conditional limit theorems for some critical superprocesses X={X_t, t≥ 0}. First we identify the rate of non-extinction. Then we show that, for a large class of functions f, conditioned on non-extinction at time t, the limit, as t→∞, of t^-1⟨ f, X_t⟩ exists in distribution and we identify this limit. Finally, we also establish, under some conditions, a central limit theorem for ⟨ f, X_t⟩ conditioned on non-extinction at time t.

Abstract:We study a renewal problem within a periodic environment, departing from the classical renewal theory by relaxing the assumption of independent and identically distributed inter-arrival times. Instead, the conditional distribution of the next arrival time, given the current one, is governed by a periodic kernel, denoted as $H$. The periodicity property of $H$ is expressed as $\mathbb{P}(T_{k+1} > t ~ |~ T_k) = H(t, T_k)$, where $H(t+T,s+T) = H(t, s)$. For a fixed time $t$, we define $N_t$ as the count of events occurring up to time $t$. The focus is on two temporal aspects: $Y_t$, the time elapsed since the last event, and $X_t$, the time until the next event occurs, given by $Y_t = t - T_{N_t}$ and $X_t = T_{N_{t}+1} - t$. The study explores the long-term behavior of the distributions of $X_t$ and $Y_t$.

Abstract:For a probability measure preserving dynamical system $(\mathcal{X},f,\mu)$, the Poincaré Recurrence Theorem asserts that $\mu$-almost every orbit is recurrent with respect to its initial condition. This motivates study of the statistics of the process $X_n(x)=\text{dist}(f^n(x),x))$, and real-valued functions thereof. For a wide class of non-uniformly expanding dynamical systems, we show that the time-$n$ counting process $R_n(x)$ associated to the number recurrences below a certain radii sequence $r_n(\tau)$ follows an \emph{averaged} Poisson distribution $G(\tau)$. Furthermore, we obtain quantitative results on almost sure rates for the recurrence statistics of the process $X_n$.

Abstract:Using the regenerative scheme of Comets, Fernández and Ferrari (2002), we establish a functional central limit theorem (FCLT) for discrete time stochastic processes (chains) with summable memory decay. Furthermore, under stronger assumptions on the memory decay, we identify the limiting variance in terms of the process only. As applications, we define classes of binary autoregressive processes and power-law Ising chains for which the FCLT is fulfilled.
