Abstract:Care robots are robotic applications targeted for use in care and nursing environments, or to support independent living for the elderly and those with disabilities. Robots may provide relief to the challenge in many countries of tending to an increased elderly population’s needs for care services. This chapter provides an introductory review of care robots and discusses their acceptability within the field of elderly care. Our focus is on the end-users of robots, namely the elderly and care professionals, who are often neglected or misconceived within the field of technology development. We approach their perspective through three empirical studies: a citizen panel for older adults on their expectations and concerns for care robots, a case study of a social robot adopted within three elderly-care facilities, and a case study of a mobile telepresence robot piloted in two care facilities. In these studies, both elderly people and professionals showed positive perceptions towards care robots, at least from certain perspectives. They also presented requirements and framework conditions that should be taken into account when considering the use of robots in care. In particular, the study participants highlighted the priority of humans in care, although they accepted robots for carrying out secondary care tasks.

Abstract:Abstract Robotic solutions designed to cater to the needs of the elderly, commonly known as eldercare robots or nursing robots, hold the promise of delivering intelligent elderly care, alleviating societal caregiving pressures, and reducing financial burdens on nations. Scholars across various disciplines have delved into the realm of eldercare robotics from different perspectives. Four types of robots at the design level are currently used in the elderly care industry: anthropomorphic, zoomorphic, cartoon, and mechanical-functional. They can play such roles as assistants, companions, and even surrogate pets, providing support for the elderly’s daily routines, cognitive enhancement, and emotional well-being. Acceptance of eldercare robots hinges on three key factors: technical attributes, user-specific characteristics, and the surrounding social environment. The utilization of eldercare robots has the potential to positively impact various aspects of the elderly population, such as their physiological health, cognitive abilities, psychological well-being, and social interactions. However, it can also lead to social isolation, reduced autonomy, increased sense of objectification, blurred responsibility attribution, and tendencies towards deceptive and childish behavior. Additionally, eldercare robots also influence healthcare professionals in terms of workload, working conditions, job satisfaction and sense of purpose, both positively and negatively. This paper examines these research findings within the context of theories in communication, technology ethics, and medical ethics, shedding light on the multifaceted landscape of eldercare robotics.

Abstract:The use of robots in elderly care represents a dynamic field of study aimed at meeting the growing demand for home-based health care services. This article examines the application of robots in elderly home care and contributes to the literature by introducing a comprehensive and functional architecture within the realm of theInternet of Robotic Things (IoRT). This architecture amalgamates robots, sensors, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to monitor the health status of the elderly. This study presented a four-actor system comprising a stationary humanoid robot, elderly individuals, medical personnel, and caregivers. This system enables continuous monitoring of the physical and emotional well-being of the elderly through specific sensors that measure vital signs, with real-time updates relayed to physicians and assistants, thereby ensuring timely and appropriate care. Our research endeavors to develop a fully integrated architecture that seamlessly integrates robots, sensors, and AI, enabling comprehensive care for elderly individuals in the comfort of their homes, thus reducing their reliance on institutional hospitalization. In particular, the methodology used was based on a user-centered approach involving geriatricians from the outset. This has been of fundamental importance in assessing their receptivity to the adoption of an intelligent information system, and above all, in understanding the issues most relevant to the elderly. The humanoid robot is specifically designed for close interaction with the elderly, capturing vital signs, emotional states, and cognitive conditions while providing assistance in daily routines and alerting family members and physicians to anomalies. Furthermore, communication was facilitated through an external Telegram bot. To predict the health status of the elderly, a machine learning model based on the Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS), a medical scoring scale, was developed. Five key lessons emerged from the study, showing how the system presented can provide valuable support to physicians, caregivers, and older people.

Abstract:The world population is aging with an inevitable decline in caregivers and medical resources to meet the healthcare need of increasing elderly people and those living with dementia or other mental problems,which has been well documented in recent decades.Psychological healthcare for elderly people has become a common problem worldwide,resulting in incalculable costs with regard to human suffering and societal burden.To alleviate this situation,researchers are working on new and efficient methods to facilitate the process of caregiving,one of which is technologies such as socially assistive robot(SAR).SAR has been empowered to expand mental healthcare services and change how people receive healthcare services.This paper presents a systematic overview of the literatures,showing that SAR potentially enhances the well-being of the greying population and lighten the workload for family members or nurses.With research evidences,SAR warrants concerted attention among researchers from diverse fields to develop the mechanism that robot may help aged people with psychological problems.Given these encouraging outcomes and positive findings,applications and friendly tools for the elderly people who are experiencing loneliness,disturbance,stress,or other psychological problems are endorsed by more and more researchers from multidisciplinary fields,although this field is still in an early developmental phase with limitations.

Abstract:Global demographics trend toward an aging population. Hence, there will be an increased social demand for elderly care. Recently, assistive technologies such as service robots have emerged and can help older adults to live independently. This paper reports a review starting from 1999 of the existing mobile service robots used for older adults to grow old at home. We describe each robot from the viewpoint of applications, platforms, and empirical studies. Studies reported that mobile social robots could assist older adults throughout their daily activities such as reminding, household tasks, safety, or health monitoring. Moreover, some of the reported studies indicate that mobile service robots can enhance the well-being of older adults and decrease the workload for their caregivers.

Abstract:Studies show dramatic increase in elderly population of Western Europe over the next few decades, which will put pressure on healthcare systems. Measures must be taken to meet these social challenges. Healthcare robots investigated to facilitate independent living for elderly. This paper aims to review recent projects in robotics for healthcare from 2008 to 2021. We provide an overview of the focus in this area and a roadmap for upcoming research. Our study was initiated with a literature search using three digital databases. Searches were performed for articles, including research projects containing the words elderly care, assisted aging, health monitoring, or elderly health, and any word including the root word robot. The resulting 20 recent research projects are described and categorized in this paper. Then, these projects were analyzed using thematic analysis. Our findings can be summarized in common themes: most projects have a strong focus on care robots functionalities; robots are often seen as products in care settings; there is an emphasis on robots as commercial products; and there is some limited focus on the design and ethical aspects of care robots. The paper concludes with five key points representing a roadmap for future research addressing robotic for elderly people.

Abstract:Background Populations are aging at an alarming rate in many countries around the world. There has been not only a decrease in the number of births and an increase in the percentage of older people, but also an increase in the number of people living alone. There is growing demand for specialist medical care and daily care with the number of people who can act as caregivers reducing. The use of assistive robots can, at least partially, solve these problems. Objective The purpose of this study was to examine the opinions of future health care professionals (medical and nursing students) regarding the use of assistive robots in the care of older people. Methods The study was conducted with a group of 178 students from Poznan University of Medical Sciences, Poznań, Poland (110 nursing students and 68 medical students), using the Users’ Needs, Requirements, and Abilities Questionnaire. Results The participants of this study believed that assistive robots should, first of all, remind older people to take medication regularly, ensure their safety, monitor their health status and environment, provide cognitive training, and encourage them to maintain physical activity. In the students’ opinion, the robot should not be an older person’s companion but only act as an assistant. Nursing students had significantly higher scores than medical students in several statements concerning everyday use of robots, including reminding about meals (P=.03), monitoring the environment (P=.001), providing advice about a healthy diet (P=.04), monitoring the intake of food and fluids (P=.02), and automatic “switch on” function (P=.02). Nursing students were more focused on the social functions of robots, including encouraging contact with friends (P=.003) and reducing the sense of loneliness and improving mood (P=.008). Medical students were more aware of privacy issues in the statement concerning the possibility of switching off the robot in specific situations (P=.01). Conclusions Our study revealed a generally positive attitude of future doctors and nurses toward assistive robots, which can have an impact on their acceptance by older adults. In the future, medical professionals could help their patients to choose the right robots (and necessary functions) that are best suited to their needs. However, this would require expanding the curriculum to include the issues of gerontechnology.

Abstract:In the last twenty years most developed countries face dramatic demographic changes, and predominantly the rapid aging of their population. As the share of elderly people is climbing while the number of care providers is declining, the aging problem is becoming an increasingly important social and economic challenge. The supply of care at home, utilizing affordable tele-care systems and smart home technologies, is one of the promising strategies to cope with challenges posed by these demographic changes. The goal of this paper is to present a tele-care robot (TCR) aimed to assist Senior citizens who live independently at their home, that need assistance in daily life activities. The idea of the proposed system is that a caregiver, operating from a central location, will be able to service between 10 to 20 patients living at their home, by using the tele-care robot. The robot will possess motion control capabilities to move inside the house of each patient and alert in case that emergency events occur. The robot will allow the care provider to communicate remotely with the patient using audio and video equipment installed on the robot. By using the robot, the caregiver will be able to examine several times during the day the well-being of the patient, his medication consumption, and his overall functionality.

Abstract:Demographic change in the world is a reality, and as a result, the number of elderly people is growing in both developed and developing countries, posing several social and economic issues. Most elderly people choose to stay alone at home rather than living with their families who can take care of them. Robots have the potential to revolutionize elderly care by providing aid, companionship, and monitoring services. The objective of this study is to present a comprehensive review which summarizes the cutting-edge works in adapting robotic applications to improve the quality of life for the elderly. We compare paradigms thoroughly and methodically in terms of support, guidance, health monitoring, and usability. We then summarize the current achievements while acknowledging their limitations before presenting perspectives on highly promising future work.

Friends from the Future: A Scoping Review of Research into Robots and Computer Agents to Combat Loneliness in Older People

Abstract:Background and aim: Loneliness is a common problem in older adults and contributes to poor health. This scoping review aimed to synthesize and report evidence on the effectiveness of interventions using social robots or computer agents to reduce loneliness in older adults and to explore intervention strategies. Methods: The review adhered to the Arksey and O'Malley process for conducting scoping reviews. The SCOPUS, PUBMED, Web of Science, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, ACM Digital Library and IEEE Xplore databases were searched in November, 2020. A two-step selection process identified eligible research. Information was extracted from papers and entered into an Excel coding sheet and summarised. Quality assessments were conducted using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Results: Twenty-nine studies were included, of which most were of moderate to high quality. Eighteen were observational and 11 were experimental. Twenty-four used robots, four used computer agents and one study used both. The majority of results showed that robots or computer agents positively impacted at least one loneliness outcome measure. Some unintended negative consequences on social outcomes were reported, such as sadness when the robot was removed. Overall, the interventions helped to combat loneliness by acting as a direct companion (69%), a catalyst for social interaction (41%), facilitating remote communication with others (10%) and reminding users of upcoming social engagements (3%). Conclusion: Evidence to date suggests that robots can help combat loneliness in older adults, but there is insufficient research on computer agents. Common strategies for reducing loneliness include direct companionship and enabling social interactions. Future research could investigate other strategies used in human interventions (eg, addressing maladaptive social cognition and improving social skills), and the effects of design features on efficacy. It is recommended that more robust experimental and mixed methods research be conducted, using a combination of validated self-report, observational, and interview measures of loneliness.

Abstract:The ongoing development of robotics on the one hand and, on the other hand, the foreseen relative growth in number of elderly individuals suffering from dementia, raises the question of which contribution robotics could have to rationalize and maintain, or even improve the quality of care. The objective of this review was to assess the published effects and effectiveness of robot interventions aiming at social assistance in elderly care. We searched, using Medical Subject Headings terms and free words, in the CINAHL, MEDLINE, Cochrane, BIOMED, PUBMED, PsycINFO, and EMBASE databases. Also the IEEE Digital Library was searched. No limitations were applied for the date of publication. Only articles written in English were taken into account. Collected publications went through a selection process. In the first step, publications were collected from major databases using a search query. In the second step, 3 reviewers independently selected publications on their title, using predefined selection criteria. In the third step, publications were judged based on their abstracts by the same reviewers, using the same selection criteria. In the fourth step, one reviewer made the final selection of publications based on complete content. Finally, 41 publications were included in the review, describing 17 studies involving 4 robot systems. Most studies reported positive effects of companion-type robots on (socio)psychological (eg, mood, loneliness, and social connections and communication) and physiological (eg, stress reduction) parameters. The methodological quality of the studies was, mostly, low. Although positive effects were reported, the scientific value of the evidence was limited. The positive results described, however, prompt further effectiveness research in this field.

In today’s world, different types of robots play substantial roles specifically in medical sector to facilitate human life, especially older adults. Assistive medical robots and devices are created in various designs to fulfill specific needs of older adults. Though medical robots are utilized widely by senior citizens, it is dramatic to find out into what extent assistive robots satisfy their needs and expectations. This paper reviews various assessments of assistive medical robots from older adults’ perspectives with the purpose of identifying senior citizen’s needs, expectations, and preferences. On the other hand, these kinds of assessments inform robot designers, developers, and programmers to come up with robots fulfilling elderly’s needs while improving their life quality.

Abstract:Social isolation is one of the most common consequences of older people with dementia, especially for those who live at their own dwellings alone due to limited access to social activities. Research relating to the use of social robots in aged care has increasing attention to facilitating the support to care services for older people with dementia. Particularly less attention has focused on the applicability of social robots in home care services. This paper aims to study the engagement and robot experience of older people with dementia while interacting with a social robot named Betty in the context of home-based care. This paper contributes to the research relating to care service embedded robots by expanding the knowledge regarding longitudinal research in home based care, while there is limited long-term study in this context. The results show that social robots are evident to be able to engage with older people with dementia at home. Consequently, designing social robots in a social context is desirable. While the robots enabled service for the human partner within the social context is possible, there is a need to underpin the concept of personhood to realize personalization of services and its contents to suit individual preferences.

Abstract:As the number of older adults living with chronic conditions continues to rise, they will require assistance with activities of daily living (ADL) and healthcare tasks to continue living independently in their homes. One proposed solution to assist with the care needs of an aging population and a shrinking healthcare workforce is robotic technology. Using a cross-sectional survey design, we purposively sampled adults (≥18 years old) to assess generational acceptance and perceived usefulness of robots to assist with ADLs, healthcare tasks, and evaluate acceptance of robotic healthcare assistance across different settings. A total of 499 adults (age range [years] 18-98, Mean = 38.7, SD = 22.7) responded to the survey. Significant differences were found among young, middle-aged, and older adults on perceived usefulness of robots for cleaning, escorting them around town, acting as companionship, delivering meals, assessing sadness and calling for help, providing medical advice, taking vital sign assessments, and assisting with personal care (p < 0.05). The majority of younger adults reported that they would like a robot to provide healthcare assistance in the hospital, compared to middle-aged and older adults (p < 0.001). Results of this study can guide the design of robots to assist adults of all ages with useful tasks.

Abstract:A rising proportion of older people has more demand on services including hospitals, retirement homes, and assisted living facilities. Regaining control of this population’s expectations will pose new difficulties for lawmakers, medical professionals, and the society at large. Smart technology can help older people to have independent and fulfilling lives while still living safely and securely in the community. In the last several decades, the number of sectors using robots has risen. Comrade robots have made their appearance in old human life, with the most recent notable appearance being in their care. The number of elderly individuals is increasing dramatically throughout the globe. The source of the story is the use of robots to help elderly people with day-to-day activities. Speech data and facial recognition model are done with AI model. Here, with the Comrade robotic model, elder people’s healthcare system is designed with better analysis state. The aim is to put in place a simple robotic buddy to determine the health of the old person via a headband that has been given to them. Comrade robot may do things like senior citizens home automation, home equipment control, safety, and wellbeing sensing, and, in emergency situation, routine duties like navigating in the outside world. The fear that robotics and artificial intelligence would eventually eliminate most of the jobs is increasing. It is anticipated that, in order to survive and stay relevant in the constantly shifting environment of work, workers of the future will need to be creative and versatile and prepared to identify new business possibilities and change industry to meet challenges of the world. According to the research, reflective practice, time management, communicating, and collaboration are important in fostering creativity.

Abstract:Environment and Planning A: Economy and Space, Ahead of Print. What happens when caring for the ageing population is so devalued that robots are deployed to care for our elders? We examine the growing employment of companion robots in elder care as one response to a critical labour shortage and loneliness epidemic shared across the Global North. Reflecting on interviews conducted with robot engineers, researchers, NGO care providers and local government, we examine five robots under development or in use in the UK and the USA. We ask if machines providing emotional and social care signal a diminishment of what it means to be human or if robots and automation present a promising solution to our elder care crisis. We do not evaluate the efficacy of robotic technology but identify and question assumptions concerning what it means to be human in modernity and examine companion or social robots at a moment of crisis and the substantive reorganisation of social reproduction wrought by neoliberal austerity. We end by calling for a reimagining of elder care, in which the care of our elders is radically revalued and where robots assist and support workers in their difficult and skilled labour of care.

Abstract:The aging of the world's population due to accelerating demographic shift on all continents is causing increasing pressure worldwide, giving rise to a "crisis of care" or "care wave." The increase in longevity is resulting in an increase in chronic diseases (such as dementia), an increase in care needs to perform the activities of daily living, and situations of isolation and profound loneliness among older adults. These circumstances are opening the debate on the need to use technology, such as robots, to improve the wellbeing of older adults and their caregivers. The aim of this paper is to address the ethical questions in using social and companion robots for people with dementia, such as concerning consent, the replacement of human care, the potential for increased dependency, and the burden on caregivers. Involving older adults and other stakeholders offers the potential to pursue robotics to support older people while also ensuring a strong ethical commitment. The study is a review of high-impact articles on the topic of the use of social and companion robots with older people with dementia.

Abstract:The perception of aging populations is a major factor driving the social robot development movement. A growing body of research reflects the expanding interest in social robots. This paper synthesizes research on the development of social robots with a literature review of academic articles with publication dates ranging from 2006 to 2017. The review is divided into three themes: (a) robots as an aid in treatment; (b) robots as social assistants and home companions; and (c) robots as custodial caregivers that are viewed in terms of ethical implications. This paper outlines the issues surrounding social, commitment, assistive, and companion robots for use in medical treatment, mental health therapy, physiotherapy, care facilities, and private homes. It describes some of the ethical concerns raised by researchers and media, including questions of control, privacy, consent, and the issue of simulated versus human compassion in caregiving. The research also points out that a rhetoric of urgency concerning aging populations drives the development of robots, which frames citizens who will benefit from robots in reductive ways. We argue that the contribution of humanities and social science research, including age studies and critical gerontology, should be better integrated with discourses of social robot development, largely from technical fields.

To improve SARs acceptability, it is necessary to tailor the system's characteristics with respect to the target needs and issues through the analysis of previous and current studies in the HRI field. Through the examination of the state of the art of social robotics in elderly care, past case studies and paper research about SARs' efficiency, it has been proposed two potential solution examples for two different scenarios, applying two different SARs: Pepper and Nao robots.
