Abstract:Biomass carbon dots (CDs) have the characteristics of being green, nontoxic, inexpensive, and simple to prepare, and they can be used in luminescence-related fields. In this study, red, green, and blue luminescent CDs were synthesised by a simple hydrothermal method under alkaline, neutral, and acidic conditions using TA as carbon source and o-phthalaldehyde as blend. The unique optical properties of these CDs are due to the differences in their degrees of conjugation, which can be controlled by the pH value of the reaction system. These three kinds of biomass CDs have good applications in light-emitting diodes (LEDs). By mixing biomass CDs with epoxy resin, warm, and cold white LEDs with Commission Internationale de l’Elcairage (CIE) coordinates (0.35, 0.36) were successfully constructed on extremely stable multicolour CDs. This study shows that these biomass CDs are a promising material for white LED lighting.

Abstract:Using tartaric acid and triammonium citrate as environmentally friendly precursor reactants, multicolor fluorescent carbon dots with adjustable emission wavelength and high quantum yield were successfully synthesized via one-step solvothermal method by only changing the reaction solvent. The morphology, structure and optical properties of the carbon dots were investigated in detail. Characterization results showed that the as-synthesized carbon dots have good dispersibility, rich surface functional groups and high quantum yield (all over 40%). A high-quality white LED with CIE color coordinate (0.34, 0.35) was successfully fabricated using the prepared multicolor carbon dots as the light conversion material. The correlated color temperature was 5336 K, and the color rendering index was up to 83.1. The prepared LED emitted warm white light and was suitable for indoor lighting. It is of great significance to prepare multicolor carbon dots with high quantum yield by single-factor control, and the prepared multicolor carbon dots have potential and broad application prospects in the field of white LED.

Abstract:Multiple-color emissive carbon dots (C-dots) are getting increasing attention in various fields. Herein, we report a facile solvothermal method for the synthesis of multiple-color emissive C-dots towards white-light emission. Under single ultraviolet-light excitation, three C-dots emit a well-controllable fluorescence emission wavelength at 440 nm, 500 nm and 610 nm by using different three amines (either ammonium hydroxide, ethylenediamine or p-phenylenediamine, respectively) and pyromellitic dianhydride as molecular precursors while another three C-dots emit a well-controllable fluorescence emission wavelength at 500 nm, 550 nm and 585 nm by using same three amines and naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic dianhydride as molecular precursors. The maximum fluorescence wavelength of these C-dots is red-shifted by changing three different amines molecular precursor from ammonium hydroxide, ethylenediamine, to p-phenylenediamine. Furthermore, these C-dots have shown promising applications in the fields of white-light-emitting diodes devices and color printing.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have attracted much attention owing to their unique optical properties and a wide range of applications. The fabrication and control of CQDs with organic solubility and long-wavelength emission are still urgent issues to be addressed for their practical use in LEDs. Here, organic-soluble CQDs were produced at a high yield of similar to 90% by a facile solvent engineering treatment of 1,3,6-trinitropyrene, which were simultaneously used as the nitrogen and carbon sources. The optical properties of the organic-soluble CQDs (o-CQDs) were investigated in nonpolar and polar solvents, films, and LED devices. The CQDs have a narrow size distribution around 2.66 nm, and can be dispersed in different organic solvents. Significantly, the as-prepared CQDs present an excitation-independent emission at 607 nm with fluorescence quantum yields (QYs) up to 65.93% in toluene solution. A pronounced solvent effect was observed and their strong absorption bands can be tuned in the whole visible region (400-750 nm) by changing the solvent. The CQDs in various solvents can emit bright, excitation-independent, long-wavelength fluorescence (orange to red). Furthermore, benefiting from the unique oil-solution properties, the as-prepared CQDs can be processed in thin film and device forms to meet the requirements of various applications, such as phosphor-based white-light LEDs. The color coordinate for these CQD modified LEDs is realized at (0.32, 0.31), which is close to pure white light (0.33, 0.33).

Abstract:In recent years, carbon dots have attracted more and more attention due to their unique advantages, but there has been a great controversy about the study of their mechanism. A clear mechanism is of great importance for the structural design of carbon dots. To investigate the photoluminescence mechanism of carbon dots, full-color carbon dots with multiple emission centers were successfully prepared by using citric acid and water-soluble aniline blue. It is shown that the red shift of emission wavelength is attributed to the synergistic effect of N and O-related surface functional groups and quantum size. The successful preparation of cold white light diodes from mixed trichromatic carbon dots indicates that this type of carbon dot has important applications in light-emitting devices.

Abstract:The white‐light‐emitting carbon dots are synthesized by a one‐step solvothermal method of trimellitic acid and o‐phenylenediamine, which consists of four types of carbon dots emitting blue, green, yellow, and red light. Five kinds of light‐emitting diodes can be prepared using the above carbon dots, among which the color rendering index of white light‐emitting diode is as high as 97. White‐light‐emitting carbon dots (WCDs) show innate advantages as phosphors in white light‐emitting diodes (WLEDs). For WLEDs, the color rendering index (CRI) is the most important metric to evaluate its performance. Herein, WCDs are prepared by a facile one‐step solvothermal reaction of trimellitic acid and o‐phenylenediamine. It consists of four CDs identified by column chromatography as blue, green, yellow, red, and thus white light is a superposition of these four types of light. The mixture of the four CDs undergoes Förster resonance energy transfer to induce the generation of white light. The photoluminescence of WCDs originates from the synergistic effect of carbon core and surface states. Thereinto, the carbon core states dominate in RCDs, and the increase of amide contents and degree of conjugation promote the redshift of the emission spectra, which is further confirmed by theoretical calculations. In addition, a high CRI of 97 is achieved when the WCDs are used as phosphors to fabricate WLEDs, which is almost the highest value up to now. The multicolor LEDs can also be fabricated by using the four multicolor CDs as phosphors, respectively. This work provides a novel approach to explore the rapid preparation of low‐cost, high‐performance WCDs and CDs‐based WLEDs.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), one of the most significant classes of carbon-based nanophosphors, have attracted extensive attention in recent years. However, few attempts have been reported for realizing CDs with tunable emissions, especially for obtaining the red-light emissions with high photoluminescence quantum yields. Herein, we synthesized CDs with different chromatic blue, green and red emissions by facilely changing the reaction solvent during hydrothermal conditions. The photoluminescence quantum yields of 34%, 19% and 47% for the blue, green and red emissions, respectively, were achieved. Furthermore, the solid-state CD/PVA composite films were constructed through mixing the CDs with PVA polymer, in which the self-quenching of photoluminescence of CDs had been successfully avoided benefiting from the formation of hydrogen bonds between the CDs and PVA molecules. Finally, the warm white light emitting diode (WLED) was fabricated by integrating CD/PVA film on a UV-LED chip. The WLED exhibited the Commission International de l'Eclairage coordinates (CIE) of (0.38, 0.34), correlated color temperature of 3913 K and color rendering index of 91, respectively, which were comparable with the commercial WLEDs.

Abstract:Red carbon dots (R-CDs), yellow-green carbon dots (Y-CDs) and blue carbon dots (B-CDs) were successfully synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method using o-phenylenediamine and dopamine hydrochloride as raw materials by adjusting the pH of the reaction solvent. The Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra and optical properties of CDs show that these three CDs have similar types but different contents of functional groups, resulting in different fluorescence emission. R-CDs and Y-CDs compound with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to form bright R-CDs/PVA and Y-CDs/PVA phosphors, while B-CDs/PVA phosphors have weak fluorescence. Compared with R-CDs and Y-CDs solution, the fluorescence emission of the phosphors was significantly enhanced for the matrix inhibits the process of non-radiative transition. Based on the thermostability and broad emission peaks of CD-based phosphors, light-emitting diode (LED) was fabricated using R-CDs/PVA and Y-CDs/PVA phosphors as fluorescent material. The prepared LED exhibits white light with a color coordinate of (0.32, 0.33), correlated color temperature (CCT) of 6067 K and color rendering index (CRI) of 78.2. The environmental-friendly CD-based white light-emitting diode (WLED) was successfully fabricated.

Abstract:Conventional synthesis of carbon dots (CDs) mostly involves a hydrothermal or solvent-thermal reaction which needs relatively high temperature and pressure. In this work, ionic liquid is used to assist in fast synthesizing CDs with an ultrahigh photoluminescent quantum yield (98.5%) by heating at a low temperature (≤100 °C) and at atmospheric pressure. In addition, through this approach, tunable multicolor emissive CDs can be successfully achieved and used for preparing high-performance white light-emitting diodes. Theoretical computation proves that the activity of synthesis reaction can be significantly enhanced by ionic liquids. Density functional theory calculation reveals that the size and graphite nitrogen ratios of CDs have an effect on bandgap reduction, resulting in a redshift of the emission, which is in good agreement with the experimental results. This simple and promising approach for fast synthesis of tunable emissive CDs using ionic liquid affords the facilitation of CDs-based luminescent materials for fast manufacturing of functional devices.

Abstract:Multicolor emissive carbon dots (CDs) have received increasing attention due to their excellent optical features. By far, insufficient studies have been conducted on the preparation and modulation of multicolor CDs, and most of the precursors used for the synthesis of multicolor CDs own benzene rings. Here, we report the solvent-engineered preparation of CDs with bright multicolor emissions. The CDs are fabricated by hydrothermal/solvothermal treatment of citric acid and cyanamide, circumventing the use of precursors containing aromatic molecules as well as the medium of concentrated acids. By simply changing the reaction solvent, the emission wavelength of the CDs shifts from the blue to yellow region, and even white emissive CDs are obtained. Specifically, blue, cyan, yellow, and white emissive CDs are obtained to exhibit photoluminescence quantum yields (PL QYs) ranging from 19.7% to 62.3%. Further studies show that the bright fluorescence might originate from molecular fluorophore grafting on the CD surface. Moreover, CDs/polymer composites with uniform bright luminescence are prepared and used as fluorescent color-converting materials for fabricating multicolor LEDs. This study extends the modulated preparation of multicolor emissive CDs that are potentially useful for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Light-emitting carbon dots (CDots) are widely investigated due to their distinct merits. However, it is still a challenge to modulate their bandgap emissions and conquer their aggregation-induced luminescence quenching to achieve full-color highly emissive CDot-based phosphors. Herein, this study proposes an approach toward realization of full-color emissive CDots from two common precursors, citric acid and urea, through employing three different solvents (water, glycerol, and dimethylformamide) and their combinations in a solvothermal synthesis. Employing sodium silicate solution, this study further demonstrates the microwave-assisted method allowing to incorporate CDots into a silica network, which effectively prevents aggregation of CDots and results in strongly luminescent full-color inorganic CDot phosphors with photoluminescence quantum yields of 30-40%. Through deposition of the red-and green-emitting CDot phosphors on blue-emitting InGaN chips, white-light-emitting diodes are fabricated with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage of (0.34, 0.31) and the color rendering index of 82.4, indicating their promising application for solid-state lighting.

Abstract:Abstract Carbon dots (CDs) have raised broad interest because of their great potential in the fluorescence related fields, such as photocatalysis and bioimaging. CDs exhibit different optical properties when dissolved in various solvents. However, the effects of solvents during the process of preparation on the fluorescence emission of CDs are still unclear. In this work, CDs were prepared by a simple one-pot solvothermal route. Typical critic acid and thiourea were used as precursors. Through changing the volume ratio of water to N , N -dimethylformamide (DMF), we have obtained color tunable CDs, with the emission wavelength from 450 to 640 nm. TEM images, Raman and XPS spectra indicate that the particle size of CDs and the content of surface functional groups (C–N/C–S and C≡N bonds) increase with the increasing ratio of DMF to water, which results in the optimal emission wavelength red-shifted. The prepared multicolor CDs may have prospects in the lighting applications. Graphical abstract

Abstract:Tunable emission carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) are highly desirable for the preparation of optoelectronic devices, especially white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). In most available studies, polychromatic CPDs are synthesized using aromatic molecules as precursors. However, few studies report the successful synthesis of polychromatic CPDs using two or more unconjugated precursors. In this work, we prepare multicolor fluorescent CPDs from a single unconjugated precursor, glucose, via a hydrothermal reaction. By controlling the particle size and degree of graphitization of the synthesized CPDs, their emission wavelength can be tuned in the range 440-625 nm (i.e., almost the entire visible region). Furthermore, the CPDs can be used to construct LEDs of varying colors, including WLEDs (CIE coordinates: 0.34, 0.36) with the correlated color temperature and color rendering index of 4997 K and 92.69, respectively. In brief, the strategy proposed in this study successfully converts unconjugated glucose into high-performance LEDs with great application potential.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have emerged as a new type of fluorescent material because of their unique optical advantages, such as high photoluminescence quantum yields (QYs), excellent photo-stability, excitation-dependent emissions, and low toxicity. However, the photoluminescence mechanism for CDs remains unclear, which limits their further practical application. Here, CDs were synthesized via a solvothermal route from citric acid and urea. Through the oxidation and reduction treatment of pristine CDs, the origin of the photoluminescence and the involved mechanism were revealed. We found that the blue/green/red emissions originated from three diverse emitting states, i.e. the intrinsic state, and C=O- and C=N-related surface states, respectively. Based on the as-prepared CDs, a pH sensor depending on the radiometric luminescence detection was developed. Furthermore, we constructed CD/PVP (PVP, polyvinylpyrrolidone) composite films, which exhibited white light emission with photoluminescence QYs of 15.3%. The white light emission with different correlated color temperatures (CCTs), from 4807 K to 3319 K, was obtained by simply changing the amount of PVP solution. Benefiting from the white light-emitting solid-state films, single-component white light-emitting diodes were fabricated with an average color rendering index value (Ra) of 80.0, luminous efficiency of 10.2 lm W-1, and good working stability, thus indicating a promising potential for practical lighting applications.

Abstract:Coal-based humic acid (CBHA) is an ideal precursor for the preparation of carbon materials due to their high aromaticity and abundance of oxygen-containing functional groups. The resulting materials often exhibit unique optical properties due to various intramolecular and intermolecular interactions. In this work, full-color luminescent carbon polymer dots (CPDs) were prepared from CBHA in DMF solvent under oxygen environment. The results show that the emission of CPDs is concentration-dependent, so that full-color emission in the visible region can be obtained by adjusting the concentration. The solvent thermal oxidation enables the tailoring of the humic acid structure to form molecular state carbon dots with luminescent ability. The molecular state carbon dots then aggregate by non-covalent bonding to form CPDs. The intradot aggregation and disaggregation of molecular state carbon dots are reversible, thus showing a clear concentration dependence. Benefit from this luminescence properties, a cold white light emission material was successfully achieved. These findings contribute to the understanding of the mechanism of optical properties of CDs.
