Abstract:Objective To investigate the character of auditory P300 of Tourette’s syndrome(TS) with or without attention deficiency and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). There were 19 TS children,15 TS+ADHD children and 20 normal controls who were recorded and compared by P300 in Fz,Cz, C 3, C 4 and Pz. TS group (Cz,Pz)and TS+ADHD group(Pz)showed later latencies and decreased amplitudes (Cz, C 3, C 4, Pz) than normal group(P0.05). No group differences of latencies and amplitudes were found between TS and TS+ADHD groups;The prevalence of abnormal P300 form,lateralized and topography of P300 peak in TS+ADHD group were significant more than those in TS and normal groups(P0.05);The topography of P300 in TS group showed right lateralized,it was left lateralized in TS+ADHD group. [Conclusion] The findings suggest that TS with and without ADHD all have cognitive function deficit, there are some P300 differences between TS with or without ADHD.

Abstract:Objective To detect the P300 components of auditory event-related potentials in first episode deficit and non-deficit schizophrenia and the relationship between P300 and clinical variables.Methods P300 components of event-related potentials were measured in 50 patients with non-deficit schizophrenia (NDS),40 patients with deficit schizophrenia (DS) and 50 unrelated healthy controls (HC).The mental status of patients with schizophrenia was determined using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS).The global functioning status was assessed using the Global Assessment of Functioning Scale (GAF).Partial correlations were computed to explore associations among the P300 and the clinical data when controlling for gender,age and education level in NDS and DS.Results Compared to HC group,both groups of NDS and DS showed significantly delayed N1 [HC (100.0 ± 14.3) ms,NDS (115.5 ± 29.1)ms,DS (115.0±15.1) ms],P2[HC(167.2 ±14.3)ms,NDS (184.7 ±39.6) ms,DS (186.0±25.0) ms] and N2 [HC (214.3 ± 18.4) ms,NDS (242.8 ± 44.9) ms,DS (240.3 ± 33.7) ms] latency (F =8.476,6.493,10.449,respectively,P ＜ 0.05),significantly reduced N1 [HC (10.7 ± 4.6) uV,NDS (6.9 ± 5.9) uV,DS (7.2±2.7)uV] and N2[HC(7.6±5.8) uV,NDS(3.7±6.2) uV,DS (1.9±6.4) uV] amplitude (F =8.610,11.651,respectively,P ＜ 0.05),as well as significantly delayed button mean reaction time [HC (357.4 ± 50.2) ms,NDS (508.6 ± 139.1) ms,DS (546.7 ± 482.4) ms] (F =6.349,P ＜ 0.05).While compared to HC group,only NDS group showed significantly delayed latency of P3b (P ＜ 0.05),whereas,only DS group showed significantly delayed latency of P3a (P ＜ 0.05).No correlation was found between P3b latency and clinical variables (course,age at onset,GAF score,PANSS total score,PANSS positive symptoms,PANSS negative symptoms and PANSS general psychopathology) in NDS (r =0.195,-0.195,-0.121,0.078,0.236,-0.138,0.062,all P ＞ 0.05),whereas no correlation was found between P3a latency and the same clinical variables in DS (r =0.002,-0.133,-0.219,-0.014,-0.179,0.032,0.112,all P ＞ 0.05).Conclusions Generalized abnormalities of P300 may exist in deficit and non-deficit schizophrenia.P3a and P3b latency may represent the trait marker of deficit and non-deficit patients with schizophrenia respectively.
Significance probability mapping analysis for auditory event-related potentials on Tourette syndrome

Abstract:Aim: To investigate the character of cerebral region relevant to auditory event-related potentials(ERPs) of Tourette's syndrome(TS) with and without attention deficiency and hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD). Methods: The auditory ERPs results of 19 TS, 15 TS with ADHD and 20 normal controls were analyzed with significance probability mapping(SPM). Results: There were significant differences in left occipital, parietal, and temporal scalp regions for N1 and N2 between TS with ADHD group and normal control group(t = 2.02 - 3.68, P < 0.05). Only prefrontal, left and right occipital, left and right parietal-temporal scalp regions for P3a between TS group and normal control group had significant differences (t = 2.24 - 3.08, P < 0.05), but left parietal-temporal scalp regions for P3a between TS with ADHD and TS groups had significant differences(t = 2.12 - 2.95, P < 0.05). Conclusion: Some biological different characters may exist at the different stages of cerebral cognition function damage between TS with and without ADHD.
P300 components of auditory event-related potentials in bipolar and unipolar depressive disorder

Abstract:Objective: To detect the P300 components of auditory event-related potentials in bipolar I and unipolar depressive disorder and the relationship with clinical variables. Method:60 patients with bipo-lar I disorder( BPD) ,50 patients with unipolar depression( UPD) ,and 50 unrelated healthy controls( HC) were included. P300 was measured by brain evoked potentiometer. Partial correlations were computed to explore asso-ciations among the P300 and the clinical data when controlling for gender,age and education level in BPD and UPD. Results:When compared to HC,both Patients groups showed significantly delayed N1,P2,N2,P3a and P3b latency(F=9. 17,F=8. 74,F=15. 27,F=7. 98,F=10. 64,respectively,all P<0. 01). But no significant differences among the three groups in N2-P3b latency(F=0. 46,P>0. 05). When compared to HC,both pa-tients groups showed significantly reduced N1,P2,N2,P3a,P3b and N2-P3b amplitude(F=12. 23,F=7. 27,F=14. 16,F=6. 96,F=8. 58,F=5. 36,respectively,all P<0. 01). When compared to HC,both patients groups showed significantly delayed mean reaction time(MRT)(F=55. 37,P<0. 01). While compared to BPD,UPD showed significantly reduced N1 amplitude and delayed N2 latency(all P<0. 05). Whereas,when compared to UPD,BPD showed significantly delayed MRT(P<0. 01) and reduced N2 amplitude(P<0. 05). N1 amplitude correlated negatively with HAMD score(P<0. 01),N2 latency correlated positively with HAMD score(P<0. 01) and MRT correlated positively with course and HAMD score(all P<0. 05) in BPD. N2 amplitude correlated negatively with HAMD score(P<0. 01) MRT correlated positively with HAMD score(P<0.05) in UPD. Conclusion:Generalized abnormalities of P300 existed in bipolar I and unipolar depression,but the abnormali-ties are different. Abnormalities of P300 may represent the state and trait marker in both bipolar I and unipolar depression.
A comparative study on the auditory event-related potential P3 between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder children and normal children

Abstract:Objective To investigate the difference of auditory event related potential P 3 between ADHD children and normal controls Methods Thirty three ADHD children and 33 normal controls were assessed by auditory event related potential test and Conner′s Behavior Rating Scale Parent Questionnaire Results (1)The P 3 latencies of ADHD children were significantly longer than those of controls except at T6 lead (2) The P 3 amplitudes of ADHD children showed no difference with those of normal controls (3) ADHD children showed significantly more commission errors than controls The omission errors and response time of ADHD children weren′t significantly different from those of controls (4)The P 3 latencies were significantly positively correlated with response time and commission errors( r =0 26-0 47, P 0 05) The P 3 latencies at some brain regions were significantly positively correlated with the learning problem factor of Conner′s scale( r =0 27-0 35, P 0 05) Conclusion The longer latencies of P 3 may be suggestion of cognitive function deficit of ADHD subjects

Abstract:Previous studies have found that theta activities exhibit posterior lateralized modulation as well as midfrontal event-related synchronization (ERS) during covert visual attention in adults. The present study investigated whether these theta modulations existed in children and whether they were associated with attentional problems in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Electroencephalography signals were recorded from typically developing (TD) children and children with ADHD (TD: n = 24; ADHD: n = 22) while they performed a cued covert visual attention task. The participants responded to a target following a cue designed as human eyes that gazed to the left or right visual field (70% validity). Compared with the TD children, the children with ADHD showed increased midfrontal theta ERS and significant posterior theta lateralization in response to the cues. More importantly, we found that the stronger posterior theta lateralization in the right hemisphere exhibited a positive trial-based correlation with the larger midfrontal theta ERS and predicted lower RT variability at the trial level in the children with ADHD. We suggest that ADHD may be associated with some enhanced systems in the frontal and posterior areas via theta oscillations, which may be involved in the compensatory maturation for their attention deficits in childhood, thereby promoting the stability of behavioral responses.

Attentional Selection and Suppression in Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Abstract:Background Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder with prominent impairments in directing and sustaining attention. The aim of this study was to identify the neurophysiologic bases of attention deficits in ADHD, focusing on electroencephalography markers of attentional selection (posterior contralateral N2 [N2pc]) and suppression (distractor positivity [P D ]). Methods The electroencephalography data were collected from 135 children 9–15 years old with and without ADHD while they searched for a shape target in either the absence (experiment 1) or the presence (experiment 2) of a salient but irrelevant color distractor. Results In experiment 1, the shape target elicited a smaller N2pc in children with ADHD ( n = 38) compared with typically developing children ( n = 36). The smaller N2pc amplitude predicted higher levels of inattentive symptoms in children with ADHD. Moreover, the target-elicited N2pc was followed by a positivity in typically developing children but not in children with ADHD. In experiment 2, the salient but irrelevant color distractor elicited a smaller P D component in children with ADHD ( n = 32) compared with typically developing children ( n = 29). The smaller P D predicted higher inattentive symptom severity as well as lower behavioral accuracy in children with ADHD. Conclusions The correlation between N2pc/P D amplitudes and ADHD symptom severity suggests that these signals of attentional selection and suppression may serve as potential candidates for neurophysiologic markers of ADHD. Our findings provide a neurophysiologic basis for the subjective reports of attention deficits in children with ADHD and highlight the importance of spatial attention impairments in ADHD.
Executive function in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder comorbid tics disorders

Abstract:Objective:To explore whether executive function (EF) deficits are specific to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or whether such deficits are also associated with tics disorder (TD).Methods:A total of 112 ADHD comorbid TD (ADHD +TD) children,112 pure ADHD children and 112 normal controls were selected.The diagnosis was according to the criteria of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,Fourth Edition (DSM-Ⅳ).The groups were matched by sex,age (less than 6 months) and IQ.The Rey-Osterrieth complex Figure Test,the Trail Making Test,and Stroop Color Word Test were administered to assess working memory,shifting and inhibitory function respectively.The results of the comparison between groups used multivariate analysis of variance,and the statistically significant indicators were conducted with apost-test comparison.Results:Both pure ADHD group and ADHD + TD group performed worse (P ＜ 0.05) in the aspects of the delay recalling structure score,the immediate memory detail score,delay recalling detail score of Rey complex figure test,time of numberletter part and shifting time of trail making test,the time of Stroops2,4,the errors of Stroop 4 and word interference than normal controls.In the aspects of the score of the structure and detail forgetting,the pure ADHD group performed worse (P ＜0.05) than normal controls,but the ADHD + TD group didn't.The differences were significant (P ＜ 0.05).The other differences all weren't significant (P ＞ 0.05).Conclusion:It suggests that children with ADHD have executive function deficit,particular in the tests assessing working memory,shifting and inhibitory function,whether or not comorbid tics disorder.Comorbid tics disorders may not be the factor of aggravation.

P50 auditory sensory gating in first episode deficit and non-deficit schizophrenia

Abstract:Objective To detect the P50 auditory sensory gating in the first episode deficit and non-deficit schizophrenia and the relationship between P50 and clinical variables.Methods Nihon Kohden evoked brain potentials machine were used to measure P50 in 60 patients with non-deficit schizophrenia(NDS),47 patients with deficit schizophrenia(DS) and 60 unrelated healthy controls(HC).Conditioning(S1)-testing(S2) stimulus paradigm was used to record the P50.The clinical status of patients with schizophrenia was determined using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale(PANSS).The social,occupational,and psychological functioning status was assessed using the Global Assessment of Functioning Scale(GAF).Partial correlations were computed to explore associations between the P50 and the clinical data when controlling for gender etc.in NDS and DS.Results Among DS,NDS and HC groups,there were significant differences in S2-P50 amplitude [(3.76±1.69) vs.(2.16±1.20) vs.(2.13±0.94)],S2/S1 ratio [(0.82±0.11) vs.(0.43±0.10) vs.(0.40±0.06)],S1-S2 amplitude [(0.78±0.49) vs.(2.77±1.49) vs.(3.19±1.18)],and 100(1-S2/S1) ratio [(17.59±10.58) vs.(57.32±9.79) vs.(60.41±5.79)](all P<0.01).DS group showed significantly higher S2-P5 amplitude than NDS group(P<0.01) and HC group(P<0.01).DS group also showed significantly higher S2/S1 ratio,lower S1-S2 amplitude,and lower 100(1-S2/S1) ratio than NDS group(P<0.01) and HC group(P<0.01).In partial correlation analysis,S2 amplitude of DS group correlated positively with PANSS total score(r=0.40,P=0.01) and PANSS subscale of negative symptoms(r=0.33,P=0.02).S1 amplitude of DS group correlated negatively with PANSS total score(r=-0.39,P=0.01).No correlation was found between P50 suppression and clinical variables in DS group(P>0.05).Whereas,no correlations were found between the components of P50,P50 suppression and clinical variables in NDS group(P>0.05).Conclusions Generalized abnormalities of P50 existed in deficit schizophrenia,whereas they did not existed in non-deficit schizophrenia.The two subgroups of schizophrenia may exist different neuropathological changes.P50 suppression may represent the trait marker of deficit patients with schizophrenia.
The specificity of the auditory P300 responses and its association with clinical outcomes in youth with psychosis risk syndrome

Abstract:Background Schizophrenia often occurs in youth, and psychosis risk syndrome (PRS) occurs before the onset of psychosis. Assessing the neuropsychological abnormalities of PRS individuals can help in early identification and active intervention of mental illness. Auditory P300 amplitude defect is an important manifestation of attention processing abnormality in PRS, but it is still unclear whether there are abnormalities in the attention processing of rhythmic compound tone stimuli in PRS individuals, and whether the P300 amplitude induced by these stimuli is specific to PRS individuals and related to their clinical outcomes. Methods In total, 226 participants, including 122 patients with PRS, 51 patients with emotional disorders (ED), and 53 healthy controls (HC) were assessed. Baseline electroencephalography was recorded during the compound tone oddball task. The event-related potentials (ERPs) induced by rhythmic compound tone stimuli of two frequencies (20-Hz, 40-Hz) were measured. Almost all patients with PRS were followed up for 12 months and reclassified into four groups: PRS-conversion, PRS-symptomatic, PRS-emotional disorder, and PRS-complete remission. The differences in baseline ERPs were compared among the clinical outcome groups. Results Regardless of the stimulation frequency, the average P300 amplitude were significantly higher in patients with PRS than in those with ED ( p = 0.003, d = 0.48) and in HC ( p = 0.002, d = 0.44) group. The average P300 amplitude of PRS-conversion group was significantly higher than that of the PRS-complete remission ( p = 0.016, d = 0.72) and HC group ( p = 0.001, d = 0.76), and the average P300 amplitude of PRS-symptomatic group was significantly higher than that of the HC group ( p = 0.006, d = 0.48). Regardless of the groups (PRS, ED, HC) or the PRS clinical outcome groups, the average P300 amplitude induced by 20-Hz tone stimulation was significantly higher than that induced by 40-Hz stimulation ( p s < 0.001, Ƞ 2 = 0.074–0.082). The average reaction times of PRS was significantly faster than that of ED ( p = 0.01, d = 0.38), and the average reaction times of the participants to 20-Hz target stimulation was significantly faster than that to 40-Hz target stimulation ( p < 0.001, d = 0.21). Conclusion The auditory P300 amplitude induced by rhythmic compound tone stimuli is a specific electrophysiological manifestation of PRS, and the auditory P300 amplitude induced by compound tone stimuli shows promise as a putative prognostic biomarker for PRS clinical outcomes, including conversion to psychosis and clinical complete remission.

A study on the competitive frequency-fluctuation structure of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and normal control children

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the difference of competitive frequency fluctuation structure between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) children and normal children. Methods: The frequency fluctuation structure, visual test of variables of attention(TOVA) and Conners' behavior scale of 29 ADHD children diagnosed by the DSM Ⅲ R criteria were compared with those of 29 normal controls. Results: The predominant frequency of normal children's alpha synergetic structure was 10 Hz, and ADHD's was 9 Hz, which was slower. The second frequency of the normal was 9 Hz, but ADHD had two second frequencies, which were 10 Hz and 8 Hz. ADHD had significantly less 10 Hz activity than normal controls( P 0.05). The children with less 10 Hz activity had longer response time and more reponse time variation of visual TOVA( r =-0.32～-0.40, P 0.05). The more the 12 Hz and 13 Hz activity ADHD had on temporal region, the higher the anxiety factor scores of Conners' scale they got( r =0.37～0.44, P 0.05). Conclusion: ADHD have inappropriate alpha synergetic structure, and poor brain self organizing ability.

Abstract:Abstract Studies examining event-related potentials (ERP) in patients affected by attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have found considerable evidence of reduced target P300 amplitude across different perceptual modalities. P300 amplitude has been related to attention-driven context comparison and resource allocation processes. Altered P300 amplitude in ADHD can be reasonably assumed to be related to ADHD typical cognitive performance deficits. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can increase the amplitude of endogenous brain oscillations . Because ERP components can be viewed as event-related oscillations (EROs), with P300 translating into the delta (0–4 Hz) and theta (4–8 Hz) frequency range, an increase of delta and theta ERO amplitudes by tACS should result in an increase of P300 amplitudes in ADHD patients. In this pilot study, 18 adult ADHD patients (7 female) performed three consecutive blocks of a visual oddball task while the electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded. Patients received either 20 min of tACS or sham stimulation at a stimulation intensity of 1 mA. Individual stimulation frequency was determined using a time–frequency decomposition of the P300. Our preliminary results demonstrate a significant increase in P300 amplitude in the stimulation group which was accompanied by a decrease in omission errors pre-to-post tACS. However, studies including larger sample sizes are advised.

Abstract:This study aimed to identify the neurophysiologic bases of auditory attention deficits in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), focusing on the electroencephalography component of auditory spatial selective attention [the N2 anterior contralateral component (N2ac)]. EEG data were collected from 7- to 11-year-old children with ADHD ( n = 54) and age-, sex-, and IQ-matched typically developing (TD) children ( n = 61), while they performed an auditory spatial selective task. For behavior, the children with ADHD showed a shorter reaction time (RT) but a higher RT coefficient of variability (RT CV ) than TD children. For ERPs, the TD group showed a significant "adult-like" N2ac component; however, the N2ac component was absent in children with ADHD. More importantly, the smaller N2ac component could predict longer RT in both groups, as well as higher severity of inattentive symptoms in children with ADHD. Our results indicated that 7- to 11-year-old TD children have developed an "adult-like" ability to balance auditory target selection and distractor suppression; the absence of N2ac in children with ADHD provided novel evidence supporting their dysfunctional auditory spatial selective attention.

Abstract:Background Substantial overlap has been reported between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Deficits in executive function (EF) are characteristic of both disorders but these impairments have not been compared directly across pure and co-morbid cases using event-related potentials (ERPs). Method Behavioural parameters and ERPs were recorded during a flankered cued-continuous performance test (CPT-OX) administered to 8–13-year-old boys with ASD ( n = 19), ADHD ( n = 18), co-morbid ASD + ADHD ( n = 29) and typically developing controls (TD; n = 26). Preparatory processing (contingent negative variation, CNV) and attentional orienting (Cue-P3) at cues, response execution at targets (Go-P3), inhibitory processing at non-targets (NoGo-P3) and conflict monitoring between target and non-target trials (Go-N2 v. NoGo-N2) were examined. Results Categorical diagnoses and quantitative trait measures indicated that participants with ADHD (ADHD/ASD + ADHD) made more omission errors and exhibited increased reaction-time (RT) variability and reduced amplitude of the Cue-P3 and NoGo-P3 compared to TD/ASD participants. Participants with ASD (ASD/ ASD + ADHD) demonstrated reduced N2 enhancement from Go to NoGo trials compared to TD/ADHD participants. Participants with ASD-only displayed enhanced CNV amplitude compared to ASD + ADHD and TD participants. Conclusions Children with ADHD show deficits in attentional orienting and inhibitory control whereas children with ASD show abnormalities in conflict monitoring and response preparation. Children with co-morbid ASD + ADHD present as an additive co-occurrence with deficits of both disorders, although non-additive effects are suggested for response preparation. Measuring ERPs that index attention and inhibition is useful in disentangling cognitive markers of ASD and ADHD and elucidating the basis of co-occurring ASD + ADHD to guide clinical assessment.

Abstract:Using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) to investigate possible neurometabolic differences between the predominantly inattentive subtype (ADHD-I), the combined subtype (ADHD-C) and normal controls. Proton spectra were acquired bilaterally on the lenticular nucleus in 20 schoolboys having ADHD and 10 matched controls. The boys with ADHD were divided into ADHD-C subtype (n=10) and ADHD-I subtype (n=10) according to DSM-IV criteria. The peaks of N-acetylaspartate (NAA), Choline moieties (Cho), myo-inositol (mI), creatine (Cr) and α-Glx were measured and their ratios to Cr were calculated. One-way ANOVA and post-hoc Bonferroni tests were used to detect the difference of the peak–area ratios of NAA, Cho, mI, and α-Glx to Cr among the three groups. There was a significant overall group difference in the NAA/Cr ratio both in the right and left lenticular nucleus (right: P=0.002; left: P=0.003). Only the ADHD-C subtype group showed a significant difference with controls (right: P=0.001; left: P=0.003) the right lenticular nucleus, the NAA/Cr ratio in the ADHD-C group was significantly lower than that in the ADHD-I group (P=0.012). In the left lenticular nucleus, the NAA/Cr ratio in the ADHD-C group showed a significant trend compared to the ADHD-I group (P=0.06). This study demonstrated the existence of measurable difference between children with ADHD-C and ADHD-I using 1H-MRS.
Sex differences in resting-state fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation of functional magnetic resonance imaging in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder

Abstract:Objective:To find out the difference between children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and normal control,and the difference between boys and girls with ADHD in resting-state.Methods:There were 38 children with ADHD in this study including 31 boys and 7 girls,meanwhile,42 normal controls whose age and gen der were matched with children with ADHD were involved too,including 29 boys and 13 girls.Total scores of ADHD rating scale (ADHD-RS) were used to measure the severity of symptom for both ADHD and normal control.Magnetic resonance imaging was used to collect the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data,and the fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (fALFF) was measured for each child.Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to find out the difference between the group and the sex.Results:Children with ADHD showed a higher fALFF in the right medial superior frontal gyrus and right supplementary motor area,and a lower fALFF in the left putamen,bilateral cerebellum and bilateral precuneus than controls (all corrected P ＜0.05).ADHD boys showed a lower fALFF in the left cerebellum and a higher fALFF in the bilateral medial superior frontal gyrus than boys without ADHD (all corrected P ＜0.05).ADHD girls showed a higher fALFF in the bilateral cerebellum and in the thalamus than girls without ADHD,and a lower fALFF in the insula than girls without ADHD (all corrected P ＜ 0.05).There was a negative relationship between the fALFF of the left cerebellum of ADHD girls and the scores of inattention symptoms.Conclusion:The fALFF difference exist between ADHD and normal controls,and between boys and girls with ADHD.

Abstract:Background: Executive dysfunction in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is thought to be closely related to the prefrontal cortex (PFC). However, there is controversy over the activation of the PFC in children with ADHD. Differences could be related to the subtype. Meanwhile, no study to date has used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to explore the differences between subtypes. Thus, this study aimed to explore the activation of the PFC in children with different subtypes of ADHD during executive function task. Methods: Participants in this study include typically developing (TD) children ( n = 28), ADHD-predominantly inattentive (ADHD-PI) ( n = 39) and ADHD-combined (ADHD-C) ( n = 24). To examine the executive function of ADHD, the Go/No-go task is chosen to assess the response inhibition function. The activation of PFC in all participants during the Go/No-go task was recorded by fNIRS. Meanwhile, behavioral data were also recorded. Results: Both TD and ADHD children activated the right PFC [middle frontal gyrus (MFG) and inferior frontal gyrus (IFG)] during response inhibition. However, the range and degree of activation differed among these groups. Compared with TD children, those with ADHD-PI had a smaller extent of activation in the right PFC, and those with ADHD-C only had a tendency to enhance activation. In addition, children with ADHD-PI and ADHD-C had impaired activation of the temporal gyrus. Besides, compared with ADHD-C and TD, those with ADHD-PI also had impaired activation of the right precentral gyrus (PG), and the supplementary motor area (SMA). Compared with ADHD-PI, ADHD-C showed decreased activation of the right MFG. The activation of Ch34 (BA44, rPFC) in children with ADHD-PI and ADHD-C was negatively correlated with their clinical symptoms. Conclusion: The activation of the PFC in children with different subtypes of ADHD has both commonalities and differences. The degree of activation of the right PFC Ch34 in children with ADHD is negatively correlated with clinical symptoms. fNIRS could be served as a candidate hemodynamic biomarker for the diagnosis of ADHD.
