Abstract:We present a rare case of mesenteric lipoblastoma in a 16-month-old girl. The US, CT and MRI features of this unusual tumour are described and correlated with the pathology findings. MRI more clearly suggested the presence of fat components in the tumour. In addition, multiplanar MR images demonstrated the anatomical extent better, which was essential for successful complete tumour excision.

Abstract:Lipoblastomatosis of mesentery is an extremely rare benign fat-containing mesenchymal tumour in infants and young children. On imaging, it appears as a solid infiltrating mass interspersed with macroscopic fat. We describe the distinctive imaging features of a large mesenteric Lipoblastomatosis, corroborated with intraoperative and histopathological features. We hope the case report and short review about this rare entity will increase the diagnostic confidence of reading radiologists while formulating differentials for lesions of similar appearance in the paediatric age group.

Abstract:Lipoblastomas are benign tumors of the embryonic lipoid cells mainly occurring in infancy and early childhood. They are clinicopathologically distinguished in two forms: the well-circumscribed and localized type and the diffuse, irregularly confined type with infiltrative growth pattern, also called lipoblastomatosis. We report two pediatric cases of a mesentery localized and cervical diffuse lipoblastomas investigated both with ultrasound and computed tomography examinations.
Submandibular lipoblastoma: Case report of a rare tumor in childhood

Abstract:Lipoblastoma is a rare, benign tumor usually occurring in childhood. It is essentially localized in the extremities and trunk, with few cases reported in the neck. We report the case of a 2-year-old girl with a rapidly enlarging, painless neck mass. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a 3-cm mass in the right submandibular region. Review of literature, diagnostic methods, and genetics of lipomatous tumors are discussed. Complete surgical excision via a lateral cervical approach demonstrated a white soft tissue with an adherent ganglion. Histology and immunohistochemistry confirmed the diagnosis of lipoblastoma. Cervical lipoblastoma is rare, and typically asymptomatic, rarely causing nerve compression or airway obstruction. MRI can help identifying the lipomatous nature of the mass, but the findings can be inconsistent due to variable maturity of fat cells and the mesenchymal content of the tumor. Diagnosis is always based on pathological examination. Further chromosomal analysis is useful in differentiating lipoblastoma from liposarcoma. Complete surgical excision is the recommended treatment.

Abstract:Giant mesenteric lipoblastoma is a rare benign tumor arising from the adipocytes. It can mimic malignant tumors, and its diagnosis is difficult before surgery. Imaging studies could lead the diagnosis but not confirm it. Those tumors arising in the abdomen are usually larger and can cause symptoms of compression. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice, and a long-term follow-up is necessary to detect local recurrences. Only a few cases of lipoblastomas arising from the mesentery are reported in literature. We present a case of a rare giant lipoblastoma arising from the mesentery of a 6-year-old girl, with a history of postprandial abdominal pain.

Abstract:Lipoblastoma is a rare benign neoplasm of embryonal fat that occurs typically in infancy and childhood. An unusual case of a giant mesenteric lipoblastoma in a 4-year-old child is presented. The lipoblastoma was completely removed. Histopathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of mesenteric lipoblastoma. Observation of the patient for 4 months postoperatively showed no evidence of recurrence.

Abstract:Lipoblastoma is a rare and benign tumour arising from embryonal fat cells, predominantly diagnosed in children younger than 3 years old. The most frequent locations are the extremities and trunk, while the head and neck areas are more rarely affected (10-15% of total cases). Clinically, the most common presentation is a fast-growing painless mass. Ultrasound is the first-line imaging examination, but Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) allows for better definition of the relationships with the adjacent vascular and muscular structures. It can help to identify the lipomatous components, and it is useful for preoperative planning. However, the definitive diagnosis is provided by histopathological examination. Complete surgical excision is the first-line treatment, with a good prognosis in case of total eradication. We report the case of a 7-month-old male child with a rapidly growing mass that had typical radiological features of lipoblastoma.

Abstract:Purpose: To describe an unusual presentation of lipoblastomatosis and review the existing literature on lipoblastomatosis and lipoblastoma. Methods: Case report and literature review. Results: A 9-year-old girl was originally diagnosed as having preseptal cellulitis. After failure of systemic therapy, a CT scan showed a mass in the orbit. Biopsy of the lesion confirmed the presence of lipoblastomatosis, consisting of immature lipoblasts admixed with more-mature adipocytes. Conclusions: Lipoblastomatosis is a rare benign diffuse lipomatous tumor of embryonal fat that is uncommonly found in the head and face of children.

Abstract:Introduction and importance: Giant mesenteric lipoblastoma (LB) is a rare and benign tumor derived from adipocytes. It may imitate malignant tumors, and its diagnosis is challenging before surgery. The diagnosis can be guided by imaging studies but cannot be confirmed. Just a few cases of lipoblastoma originating from the mesentery are reported in the literature. Case presentation: We present a case of a rare giant lipoblastoma arising from the mesentery of an 8-month-old boy who consulted our emergency department for an incidentally discovered abdominal mass. Clinical discussion: LB is most common in the first decade of life, with a high incidence in boys. LBs are generally found in the trunk and extremities. Intra-abdominal locations are rare; however, intraperitoneal tumors generally reach larger dimensions. Conclusions: Tumors that arise in the abdomen are usually larger and may be discovered by physical exam as an abdominal mass and may cause compression symptoms.

Abstract:Purpose: Lipoblastoma and lipoblastomatosis are very rare benign neoplasms, which almost exclusively occur in infants and young children. Despite their potential to local invasion and rapid growth, these tumors have an excellent prognosis, particularly if resected completely. Usually, the diagnosis is not taken into consideration preoperatively, and depends on histopathological evaluation. This study was done to determine imaging characteristics of lipoblastoma. Materials and methods: Eight cases of histopathologically proven lipoblastoma treated from 1988 to 2003 were reviewed, comprising four girls and four boys ranging in age from 17 months to nine years. The localization was chest wall (four times), abdominal wall (once), gluteal region (once), lower leg (once) and forearm (once). Ultrasound, MRI and CT scans were evaluated and correlated to clinical data of the patients. Results: Ultrasound showed lipomatous echogenicity and echotexture. The tumors appeared signal intensive on T1-weighted MR images and had a mean intensive signal on T2-weighted MR images with fat suppression. They were markedly hypodense on CT. The growth pattern was invasive in all imaging methods, with extension into preformed spaces, such as intercostal spaces and neural foramina, but without infiltration into surrounding structures or metastases. Conclusion: Ultrasound and MRI are the methods of choice to diagnose lipoblastoma by revealing structures and local growth pattern that appear specific of this rare tumor entity. The imaging characteristics of the lipoblastoma have to be correlated with the age of patients to exclude other conditions in the differential diagnosis.

Abstract:A BSTRACT Abdominal lipoblastoma is a rare tumor composed of embryonic fat. Mesenteric involvement is rarer, with only five cases reported in infants. We report a case of a 10-month-old infant with a lipomatous tumor arising from the ileal mesentery. Primary resection was done, and histopathology was suggestive of a lipoblastoma. The child is well in follow-up with no evidence of recurrence.

Abstract:Background: Lipoblastoma is a rare benign mesenchymal tumor of infancy and early childhood. Symptoms vary depending on localization, and signs of compression of adjacent organs may be seen. Methods: A total of 12 children with pathologically proven lipoblastoma from 2000 to 2014 were reviewed retrospectively for their clinical features, treatment and follow up. Results: There were seven boys and five girls between 7.5 months and 7.5 years of age. The most common symptom was painless rapid-growing mass. The tumors were located in the neck, the abdomen, the groin, pelvis, axilla, glutea, labium majus, thigh and trunk. The largest tumor was in a retroperitoneal location and was 13 × 10 cm in size. Complete resection was performed in 10 patients. All of these patients were followed without any evidence of recurrence. Subtotal excision was performed in two patients. At a median follow up of 38 months (range, 1.8 months-10 years), all patients were disease free. Conclusions: Lipoblastoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of rapidly growing mass in patients <3 years of age. Total excision is the treatment of choice with preservation of vital organs. The prognosis is excellent despite large tumor size and local invasion. Recurrence rate is high in incompletely resected tumors. Regular follow up is important for early detection of recurrence.
Nonmyxoid mediastinal lipoblastoma in a 2-year-old girl: Case report with US, CT, and MRI findings

Abstract:Lipoblastomas are rare, benign tumors of mesenchymal origin that contain adipose tissue. They usually develop in the soft tissues of an extremity in infants, children, and young adolescents. We report the case of a 22-month old girl referred to our staff for swelling in the supraclavicular fossa, which was observed when the child cried. The ulstrasonographic examination revealed a mass in the anterosuperior portion of the mediastinum that extended into the right supraclacular fossa. The lesion was weakly hyperechoic with clear-cut margins and did not appear to invade surrounding tissues. On CT, it appeared inhomogeneously hypodense with denitometric characteristics of adipose tissue. On MRI, it was hyperintense on both T1- and T2-weighted sequences and reduced signal intensity in FAT SAT sequences. In light of the imaging features and predominant adipose tissue component, the mass was diagnosed as a mediastinal lipoblastoma, and this diagnosis was confirmed by surgical histology.

Abstract:Background: Lipoblastoma is a rare, benign, fatty tissue tumor that occurs in infancy and early childhood. The most common tumor locations are the extremities and the torso. The location of this tumor in the chest wall and an intrathoracic extension is uncommon. Case report: We present a case of a 3-year-old boy with anterior chest wall lipoblastoma with an intrathoracic extension. Computed tomography was suggestive of lipoblastoma. The mass was completely excised through a right posterolateral thoracotomy. The histologic examination of the lesion confirmed the diagnosis of lipoblastoma. Conclusion: Although extremely rare, chest wall lipoblastoma should be included in the differential diagnosis of thoracic mass in childhood.

Abstract:Lipoblastoma and lipoblastomatosis are rare benign tumors of embryonal fat with a tendency to local invasion but not to metastasize. To date, there have been 60 cases described in the international literature. There has never been a report in a child older than 8 yr. The main clinical characteristics are the presentation, usually below 3 yr of age, the rapid growth of the mass and the peripheral location, mainly in the extremities. Although CT scan may show a fatty tumor, there is no single test to make the differential diagnosis (which includes benign lipoma, liposarcoma and myxoliposarcoma) and the treatment should be based on clinical findings. We have treated four patients with this condition. Two were intrathoracic, one was intraperitoneal, and one was a tumor of the upper arm. All presented as rapidly-growing tumors and were clinically assumed to be malignant. We recommend complete but conservative excision of the tumor; there are reported recurrences after inadequate excision. This is a benign tumor and radical cancer surgery should be avoided.

Abstract:Lipoblastoma is a rare exclusively benign encapsulated tumor arising from embryonic white fat. Tumor occurs primarily in infancy and early childhood. It often presents as painless swelling in extremities and trunk, and rarely develops in head and neck and other sites. We report case of a 15 months old boy with a gradually enlarging, painless swelling over the left side of the dorsum of nose. Computed tomography scan revealed a subdermal soft tissue mass. Treatment remains complete surgical excision. Diagnosis is determined by histopathologic findings. Histologically, lipoblastoma reveals immature adipose cells in varying stages of maturity arranged into lobules separated by septa. No recurrence of tumor has been noted over 6 months of follow-up of this patient.

Abstract:Background: Lipomatous tumors are the most common type of soft-tissue tumors. Benign lipomatous tumors are lipomas and lipoblastoma. We herein report a case of benign mesenteric lipomatous tumor and the largest collection of known benign mesenteric lipomatous tumors in children in the literature. Case presentation: A 3-year-old girl presented with repeated dull abdominal pain and left abdominal mass swelling. On a physical examination, the child had a soft, moderately distended left abdomen that was not tender when palpated. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a large fatty mass within the mesentery, measuring approximately 8 × 6 cm. The mass extended from the right upper quadrant to the lower pole of the kidneys. Laparotomy with resection of the mesenteric tumor was performed under general anesthesia. A well-capsuled tumor was a soft, yellow mass and found loosely attached to the mesenterium of the ileum. A histopathological examination demonstrated the lobular proliferation of mature adipocytes. Atypical lipoblasts were not seen. These features are compatible with benign lipomatous tumor, such as lipoma or lipoblastoma with maturation. Conclusion: In conclusion, benign mesenteric lipomatous tumors tend to be large in size over 10 cm in longitudinal length. However, resection is well tolerated in the vast majority of cases with benign post-operative courses.
A large retroperitoneal lipoblastoma as an incidental finding: a case report

Abstract:Background: Lipoblastoma is a rare benign mesenchymal neoplasm of infancy that most commonly occurs on the extremities and trunk but can arise at variable sites of the body. Retroperitoneal lipoblastomas are particularly rare but can grow to enormous size, and preoperative diagnosis is difficult with diverse, mostly malignant differential diagnoses that would lead to aggressive therapy. Since lipoblastoma is a benign tumor that has an excellent prognosis after resection, correct diagnosis is crucial. Case presentation: A case of a large retroperitoneal tumor of a 24-month old infant that was clinically suspicious of a malignant tumor is presented. Due to proximity to the right kidney, clinically most probably a nephroblastoma or clear cell sarcoma of the kidney was suspected. Radiological findings were ambiguous. Therefore, the mass was biopsied, and histology revealed an adipocytic lesion. Although mostly composed of mature adipocytes, in view of the age of the patient, the differential diagnosis of a (maturing) lipoblastoma was raised, which was supported by molecular analysis demonstrating a HAS2-PLAG1 fusion. The tumor was completely resected, and further histopathological workup led to the final diagnosis of a 13 cm large retroperitoneal maturing lipoblastoma. The child recovered promptly from surgery and showed no evidence of recurrence so far. Conclusion: Although rare, lipoblastoma should be included in the differential diagnoses of retroperitoneal tumors in infants and children, and molecular diagnostic approaches could be a helpful diagnostic adjunct in challenging cases.

Abstract:Background: Lipoblastoma is a rare benign neoplasm of immature fat cells in children. Imaging appearances are frequently complex, sometimes simulating liposarcoma. Objective: To characterize features of lipoblastoma on MRI and CT in comparison with recurrence risk. Materials and methods: We identified cases via retrospective review of histopathology-proven lipoblastoma cases in a large referral database and a pediatric medical center. Two radiologists scored CT and MRI on the basis of lesion features. Results: We included a total of 56 children (32 boys and 24 girls) with a mean age of 2.6 years (range 0.1-13 years). Extremity lesions were most common (27%), followed by neck (19%), gluteal region (18%), chest (14%) and mesentery (14%). Children most commonly presented with painless masses (73%), followed by dyspnea (9%), distension (9%) and pain (7%). Non-adipose soft-tissue components were identified on CT and MRI in 78% of cases. Significant (moderate or marked) septations were noted in 59% and enhancement in 35%. Compartmental invasion was present in 43% of cases. Of paraspinal cases, 38% involved the neural foramina or central canal. Lesion complexity did not significantly correlate with age. Recurrence was observed in 9% of cases and was significantly correlated with compartmental invasion (correlation: 0.303, P=0.009) and septation complexity (correlation: 0.227, P=0.038) on initial imaging. Conclusion: Although lipoblastoma is a fat-containing entity, many lesions demonstrate marked complexity and local infiltration that resemble liposarcoma, which is exceedingly rare in younger children. Compartmental invasion and thicker septations appear to confer greater risk of recurrence following resection.
