Abstract:In this paper, the input-output finite-time stability and stabilization for distributed parameter systems was studied. The concept of input-output finite-time stability for distributed parameter systems was defined. By employing Lyapunov functional theory, sufficient conditions of input-output finite-time stability for distributed parameter systems were given. Sufficient conditions for the existence of distributed state feedback controllers which ensure the closed-loop distributed parameter systems be input-output finite-time stable were also proposed. Finally, a numerical example was given to illustrate our results.

Abstract:This study addresses the problems of finite-time (FT) stability and stabilisation for distributed parameter systems. First, the authors extend the concepts of FT stability and FT stabilisation to the distributed parameter systems. Then, sufficient conditions of the L 2-FT stability and W 1,2-FT stability for the distributed parameter systems are established in terms of linear matrix inequalities. Based on these sufficient conditions, the authors design the state feedback controllers which guarantee the closed-loop distributed parameter systems to be L 2-FT stable and W 1,2-FT stable, respectively. Finally, numerical examples are given to illustrate the proposed results.

Abstract:A procedure for designing a feedback control to asymptotically stabilize, with probability one, a quasi nonintegrable Hamiltonian system is proposed. First, the motion equations of a system are reduced to a one-dimensional averaged Itô stochastic differential equation for controlled Hamiltonian by using the stochastic averaging method for quasi nonintegrable Hamiltonian systems. Second, a dynamical programming equation for the ergodic control problem of the averaged system with undetermined cost function is established based on the dynamical programming principle. This equation is then solved to yield the optimal control law. Third, a formula for the Lyapunov exponent of the completely averaged Itô equation is derived by introducing a new norm for the definitions of stochastic stability and Lyapunov exponent in terms of the square root of Hamiltonian. The asymptotic stability with probability one of the originally controlled system is analysed approximately by using the Lyapunov exponent. Finally, the cost function is determined by the requirement of stabilizing the system. Two examples are given to illustrate the application of the proposed procedure and the effectiveness of control on stabilizing the system.

Abstract:We present in this paper a continuous feedback approach to the problem of global strong stabilization, for genuinely nonlinear systems that may not be stabilized, even locally, by any smooth feedback. We describe conditions under which it is possible to prove, while no smooth controllers exist, the existence of continuous state feedback control laws that achieve global strong stability (GSS) in the sense of Kurzweil. The proof is constructive and carried out by developing a machinery, which combines the theory of homogeneous systems with the idea of adding a power integrator, for the explicit construction of globally stabilizing continuous controllers. We then illustrate, by means of examples, how this machinery can be used to overcome the topological obstruction caused by smooth feedback, and hence resulting in new solutions to a variety of open control problems, including global stabilization of an underactuated unstable two degree of freedom mechanical system.

Feedback stabilization of parabolic coupled system and its numerical study

Abstract:In the first part of this article, we study feedback stabilization of a parabolic coupled system by using localized interior controls. The system is feedback stabilizable with exponential decay $-\omega<0$ for any $\omega>0$. A stabilizing control is found in feedback form by solving a suitable algebraic Riccati equation. In the second part, a conforming finite element method is employed to approximate the continuous system by a finite dimensional discrete system. The approximated system is also feedback stabilizable (uniformly) with exponential decay $-\omega+\epsilon$, for any $\epsilon>0$ and the feedback control is obtained by solving a discrete algebraic Riccati equation. The error estimate of stabilized solutions as well as stabilizing feedback controls are obtained. We validate the theoretical results by numerical implementations.

Abstract:The stability analysis of a class of discontinuous discrete-time systems is studied in this paper. The system under study is modeled as a feedback interconnection of a linear system and a set-valued nonlinearity. An equivalent representation, based on a constrained optimization problem, is proposed to represent the set-valued nonlinearity via a collection of linear and quadratic constraints. Relying on this description and on the use of a generalized quadratic set-valued Lyapunov functions, sufficient conditions in the form of linear matrix inequalities for global exponential stability are obtained. Numerical examples corroborate the theoretical findings.

Abstract:This paper investigates finite-time stability for a class of unbounded nonlinear control systems using various feedback laws. These feedback laws can either lead to finite-time stability or to fixed-time and prescribed stability of the closed-loop system. The well-posedness of the closed-loop system is proved via the maximal monotone operators theory. Illustrative examples are proposed with numerical simulations.

Abstract:<p>This paper studies finite-time stability analysis and finite-time stabilization of linear systems by bounded linear time-varying feedback. On the one hand, (both local and global) finite-time stability of general nonlinear time-varying systems is investigated by the comparison principle and the notion of finite-time escaping functions. Some Lyapunov-like stability theorems are established. On the other hand, finite-time and prescribed-time stabilization of linear systems by bounded linear time-varying feedback are revisited based on the proposed finite-time stability theorems. Two classes of new time-varying high-gain functions are proposed to reduce the regulation time. Some connections of the proposed results to existing results on Lyapunov-inequality based finite-time stability analysis and nonlinear feedback based finite-time stabilization are revealed. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is illustrated by a numerical example.</p>

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the stabilization of a linear control system $y' = A y + B u$ and its suitable non-linear variants where $(A, \cD(A))$ is an infinitesimal generator of a strongly continuous {\it group} in a Hilbert space $\mH$, and $B$ defined in a Hilbert space $\mU$ is an admissible control operator with respect to the semigroup generated by $A$. Let $\lambda \in \mR$ and assume that, for some {\it positive} symmetric, invertible $Q = Q(\lambda) \in \cL(\mH)$, for some {\it non-negative}, symmetric $R = R(\lambda) \in \cL(\mH)$, and for some {\it non-negative}, symmetric $W = W(\lambda) \in \cL(\mU)$, it holds $$ A Q + Q A^* - B W B^* + Q R Q + 2 \lambda Q = 0. $$ We then present a new approach to study the stabilization of such a system and its suitable nonlinear variants. Both the stabilization using dynamic feedback controls and the stabilization using static feedback controls in a weak sense are investigated. To our knowledge, the nonlinear case is out of reach previously when $B$ is unbounded for both types of stabilization.

Abstract:This technical note studies switching stabilization problems for continuous-time switched linear systems. We consider four types of switching stabilizability defined under different assumptions on the switching control input. The most general switching stabilizability is defined as the existence of a measurable switching signal under which the resulting time-varying system is asymptotically stable. Discrete switching stabilizability is defined similarly but requires the switching signal to be piecewise constant on intervals of uniform length. In addition, we define feedback stabilizability in Filippov sense (respectively, sample-and-hold sense) as the existence of a feedback law under which closed-loop Filippov solution (respectively, sample-and-hold solution) is asymptotically stable. It is proved that the four switching stabilizability notions are equivalent and their sufficient and necessary condition is the existence of a piecewise quadratic control-Lyapunov function that can be expressed as the pointwise minimum of a finite number of quadratic functions.

Abstract:The ability to asymptotically stabilize control systems through the use of continuous feedbacks is an important topic of control theory and applications. In this paper, we provide a complete characterization of continuous feedback stabilizability using a new approach that does not involve control Lyapunov functions. To do so, we first develop a slight generalization of feedback stabilization using composition operators and characterize continuous stabilizability in this expanded setting. Employing the obtained characterizations in the more general context, we establish relationships between continuous stabilizability in the conventional sense and in the generalized composition operator sense. This connection allows us to show that the continuous stabilizability of a control system is equivalent to the stability of an associated system formed from a local section of the vector field inducing the control system. That is, we reduce the question of continuous stabilizability to that of stability. Moreover, we provide a universal formula describing all possible continuous stabilizing feedbacks for a given system.

Abstract:This paper studies the periodic feedback stabilization for a class of linear T-periodic evolution equations. Several equivalent conditions on the linear periodic feedback stabilization are obtained. These conditions are related to the following subjects: the attainable subspace of the controlled evolution equation under consideration; the unstable subspace (of the evolution equation with the null control) provided by the Kato projection; the Poincaré map associated with the evolution equation with the null control; and two unique continuation properties for the dual equations on different time horizons [0,T] and [0,n0T] (where n0 is the sum of algebraic multiplicities of distinct unstable eigenvalues of the Poincaré map). It is also proved that a T-periodic controlled evolution equation is linear T-periodic feedback stabilizable if and only if it is linear T-periodic feedback stabilizable with respect to a finite-dimensional subspace. Some applications to heat equations with time-periodic potentials are presented.

Abstract:This paper studies the feedback stabilization of abstract Cauchy problems with unbounded output operators by finite-dimensional controllers. Both necessary conditions and sufficient conditions for feedback stabilizability are presented. The proof of closed-loop stability is based on a novel input-output gain introduced in this paper. For systems satisfying a property we call quasi-finite, an equivalent characterization of feedback stabilizability is obtained. Quasi-finiteness is verified for classes of parabolic and hyperbolic equations.

Abstract:We investigate the stability and stabilization concepts for infinite dimensional time fractional differential linear systems in Hilbert spaces with Caputo derivatives. Firstly, based on a family of operators generated by strongly continuous semigroups and on a probability density function, we provide sufficient and necessary conditions for the exponential stability of the considered class of systems. Then, by assuming that the system dynamics is symmetric and uniformly elliptic and by using the properties of the Mittag-Leffler function, we provide sufficient conditions that ensure strong stability. Finally, we characterize an explicit feedback control that guarantees the strong stabilization of a controlled Caputo time fractional linear system through a decomposition approach. Some examples are presented that illustrate the effectiveness of our results.

On convergence analysis of feedback control with integral action and discontinuous relay perturbation

Abstract:We consider third-order dynamic systems which have integral feedback action and discontinuous relay disturbance. More specifically for applications, our focus is on the integral plus state-feedback control of motion systems with the discontinuous Coulomb-type friction. We resume the attractive stiction region, where the hybrid system has also solutions in Filippov sense, while the motion trajectories remain in an idle state (that we call `stiction') until the sliding-mode condition becomes violated through the integral action. We analyze the conditions for occurrence of the slowly converging stick-slip cycles. We also show that the hybrid system is globally but only asymptotically and almost always not exponentially stable. A particular case of exponential convergence can appear for some initial values, assuming the characteristic equation of the linear subsystem has only the real roots. Illustrative numerical examples are provided alongside with the developed analysis.

Abstract:In this article, we explore the feedback stabilization of a viscous Burgers equation around a non-constant steady state using localized interior controls and then develop error estimates for the stabilized system using finite element method. Abstract:This paper studies the periodic feedback stabilization of the controlled linear time-periodic ordinary differential equation: y(t) = A(t) y(t) + B(t) u(t), t >= 0, where [A(center dot), B(center dot) is a T-periodic pair, i. e., A(center dot) epsilon L-infinity (R+;R-n x n) and B(center dot). L-infinity(R+; R-nxm) satisfy respectively A(t + T) = A(t) for a. e. t >= 0 and B(t + T) = B(t) for a. e. t >= 0. Two periodic stablization criteria for a T-period pair [A(center dot), B(center dot)] are established. One is an analytic criterion which is related to the transformation over time T associated with A(center dot); while another is a geometric criterion which is connected with the null-controllable subspace of [A(center dot), B(center dot)]. Two kinds of periodic feedback laws for a T-periodically stabilizable pair [A(center dot), B(center dot)] are constructed. They are accordingly connected with two Cauchy problems of linear ordinary differential equations. Besides, with the aid of the geometric criterion, we find a way to determine, for a given T-periodic A(center dot), the minimal column number m, as well as a time-invariant nxm matrix B, such that the pair [A(center dot), B] is T-periodically stabilizable.

Abstract:Incremental stability analysis, which plays a crucial role in dynamical systems, especially nonlinear systems, has attracted more and more concern for its applications in real world control systems nowadays. This paper presents a constructive approach to derive sufficient conditions for incremental exponential stability of the Filippov solutions of a class of differential systems with discontinuous right-hand sides, by introducing a sequence of continuous dynamical systems which is uniformly contracting and approximating the Filippov systems in terms of the evolution map graphs. Afterwards, several applications of the derived theoretical results are explored. Some specific classes of control dynamical systems with discontinuous right-hand sides are studied and relative detailed conditions are presented to show the power of the present approach to investigate the stability of switched dynamical systems, Hopfield neural network with discontinuous activations and sliding mode control.

Abstract:Control laws for continuous-time dynamical systems are most often implemented via digital controllers using a sample-and-hold technique. Numerical discretization of the continuous system is an integral part of subsequent analysis. Feedback linearizability of such sampled systems is dependent upon the choice of discretization map or technique. In this article, for feedback linearizable continuous-time systems, we utilize the idea of retraction maps to construct discretizations that are feedback linearizable as well. We also propose a method to functionally compose discretizations to obtain higher-order integrators that are feedback linearizable.
