Abstract:Polymerization-induced phase separation behavior of 2-acryllaniido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS)/sodium dodecylsulfonate (SDS) aqueous solution was investigated by using a combined small angle light scattering (SALS) and laser light interference (LI) system. Compared with the conventional SALS technique that has been widely used in studying the phase separation kinetics and mechanism of multicomponent polymer blends or solution, the present combined SALS and LI system can additionally provide valuable information on polymerization kinetics prior to the onset of phase separation. It was found that the 1 mol (.) L-1 AMPS aqueous solution in the presence of 0.2 mol (.) L-1 SDS underwent apparent phase separation when polymerization conversion approached 82%. The phase separation rate is so rapid that it takes only 90 s for scattering intensity to reach the maximum. The early stage phase separation follows the spinodal decomposition (SD) mechanism that can be described by the classic linear theory sponsored by Cahn and Hilliard. At late stage of phase separation, however, an observable shift of characteristic vector q(m) to larger values take place, which may result from the secondary phase separation in the monomer-rich phase that leads to a deceased average domain size in sample solution. On the other hand, the integral scattering intensity decreased apparently at late stage of phase separation due to the decreased refractive index difference between the monomer-rich and polymer-rich phases as a result of the continued polymerization in the monomer-rich phase.[GRAPHICS]Illustration of the combined SALS and LI system.
Characterizing Hydration of SDS Micelles by Contrast Variation Small Angle Neutron Scattering

Abstract:Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) from cationic globular micellar solutions composed of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and in water was studied with contrast variation approach. Extensive computational studies have demonstrated that the distribution of invasive water is clearly an important feature for understanding the self-organization of SDS molecules and the stability of assemblies. However, in existing scattering studies the degree of hydration level was not examined explicitly. Here using the scheme of contrast variation, we establish a methodology of SANS to determine the intra-micellar radial dis-tributions of invasive water and SDS molecules from the evolving spectral lineshapes caused by the varying isotopic ratio of water. A detailed description hydration of SDS micelles is provided, which in an excellent agreement with known results of many existing simulations studies. Extension of our method can be used to provide an in-depth insight into the micellization phenomenon which is commonly found in many soft matter systems.

Speaking Silver : Lessons for Product Innovation & Development in an Aging Marketplace

Abstract:Innovative product design is increasingly crucial as the generally educated and wealthier boomer consumer rises to the fore of the marketplace with a lifetime of technology experience and rising expectations in tow. Although the current emphasis on invention is important, it misses the mark and leads to products that partially or ineffectively respond to the needs and desires of the older user. Design should be considered a strategic tool that allows those involved in the product development process to successfully and competitively tailor the product to the user population. The first step is to learn from those who are expected to be the ultimate users of a product. The following is an examination of consumer-centered design lessons for effective product innovation and development in an aging marketplace. While some have argued that there will be less passion to innovate in aging economies, because older consumers will be less interested in adopting new products, the AgeLab’s work with industry around the world suggests the opposite. AgeLab research indicates that the new expectations of aging baby boomers in Australia, Europe, North America, and the Dan Kai of Japan, are more likely to challenge technology developers and product designers. They will have to work harder to excite and delight the older consumer and find new ways to acquire, not to mention keep, loyalties. Instead of being staid buyers, the aging baby boomer’s needs and demands are the forefront of a new consumer pull on product development and innovation. The coming wave of older adults are more educated, more demanding, and have experienced more technology throughout their lives than any previous generation. Lifetime experience of rapid technological change now powers new expectations for the capacity of innovation to improve how we live, care, travel, work, learn, and play throughout a longer lifespan. A survey conducted by the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, indicated that more than 80 percent of baby boomers fully expect scientific and technological advances to improve their lives as they age (Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, 2004). Today, the buyers (if not lead adopters) of the most high-tech, high-priced, and high-design are likely to be over 50 and not somewhere between their teens and twenties. Lesson 1. ‘If You Build They Will Come’...Maybe Today, technology developers and product designers are generating countless ideas to respond to what they perceive characterizes the older market – demands to manage the diseases and disabilities that often accompany old age. While these needs are plentiful, they are an incomplete set of demands from older adults (Coughlin & Lau, 2006). User acknowledgement of an unfulfilled need is the first step to adopting a new technology. However, older adults are prone to user denial, particularly with regard to assistive technologies to support disease and disability. In such cases it is not apparent to an older person that he or she has reached the point at which they need a device to perform the functions that they have conducted all their lives without assistance.

Abstract:Semi‐crystalline polymers present a hierarchical organization of structural levels from ångströms to hundreds of nanometres. By combining small‐ and wide‐angle neutron scattering at the same instrument, such complex morphologies can be resolved under application of relevant humidity and temperature conditions.Semi‐crystalline polymers exhibit microphase separation into crystalline and amorphous domains characterized by multiple structural levels with sizes ranging from ångströms to hundreds of nanometres. The combination of small‐angle (SANS) and wide‐angle (WANS) neutron scattering on the same beamline enables reliable in situ characterization of such materials under application‐relevant conditions, with the unique advantage of contrast variation by controlled labelling, allowing the structure of such multi‐component systems to be resolved in detail. This paper reports a structural analysis performed on deuterated polymer membranes based on syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) using an extended Q‐range SANS and WANS combination, always with the same neutron scattering instrument, either a pinhole SANS diffractometer installed at a research reactor or a `small‐ and wide‐angle' time‐of‐flight diffractometer installed at a neutron spallation source. sPS is a semi‐crystalline material that becomes hydrophilic and proton conducting when suitable functionalization is achieved by thin film sulfonation, and can form various co‐crystalline complexes (clathrates) with small organic molecules stored in the crystalline phase as guests in the vacancies between the polymer helices. Therefore, this material is interesting not only for its conducting properties but also for its versatility as a model system to evaluate the usefulness of extended Q‐range neutron scattering in such studies. Variation of neutron contrast was achieved in the amorphous hydrophilic phase by using H2O or D2O to hydrate the membranes and in the crystalline phase by loading the clathrates with deuterated or protonated guest molecules. The experimental approach, the advantages and limitations of the two types of instrumentation used in such analyses, and the main results obtained with respect to the structural characterization of sulfonated sPS membranes under different hydration and temperature conditions are reported, and the potential of this method for similar structural studies on other semi‐crystalline polymeric materials is discussed.

Abstract:The mixed micelles of nonionic decanoyl-N-methylglucamide (MEGA-10) with the anionic sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), the cationic dodecyltrimetylammonium bromide (DTAB), and the nonionic octaoxyethylene monododecyl ether (C12E8) have been studied using the fluorescence probe technique. The critical micelle concentration of the three mixed systems in the whole composition range were determined by the pyrene 1:3 ratio method, and the experimental results were analysed in the context of the pseudophase separation model, by using the regular solution theory. It was found that the mixed micelles containing the anionic surfactant are more stable than the pure micelles. This fact was attributed to the occurrence of ion–dipole interactions between the head groups of the component surfactants in the mixed micelle. The static quenching method was used to determine the mean aggregation number of pure and mixed micelles. It was found that whereas mixed micelles containing SDS show a positive deviation from the ideal behaviour, those constituted by DTAB deviate negatively. This different tendency was interpreted on the basis of both steric and electrostatic interactions. The evolution of the microstructure of the mixed micelles upon the participation of the co-surfactant was followed through the micropolarity and microviscosity of the mixed systems. Although the micropolarity studies do not allow definite conclusions, the microviscosity assays indicate that the participation of the co-surfactant induces the formation of less ordered micelles, this effect being more pronounced in the case of mixtures with the anionic surfactant.

Abstract:The self-assembly and phase separation of mixtures of polyelectrolytes and surfactants are important to a range of applications, from formulating personal care products to drug encapsulation. In contrast to systems of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes, in polyelectrolyte-surfactant systems the surfactants micellize into structures that are highly responsive to solution conditions. In this work, we examine how the morphology of micelles and degree of polyelectrolyte adsorption dynamically change upon varying the mixing ratio of charged and neutral surfactants. Specifically, we consider a solution of the cationic polyelectrolyte polydiallyldimethylammonium, anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate, neutral ethoxylated surfactants (C[Formula: see text]EO[Formula: see text]), sodium chloride salt, and water. To capture the chemical specificity of these species, we leverage recent developments in constructing molecularly informed field theories via coarse-graining from all-atom simulations. Our results show how changing the surfactant mixing ratios and the identity of the nonionic surfactant modulates micelle size and surface charge, and as a result dictates the degree of polyelectrolyte adsorption. These results are in semi-quantitative agreement with experimental observations on the same system.

Abstract:The interaction of molecules on the surface and in the micelle of the mixed system of cationic bolaamphiphile /sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) was studied by using regular solution theory. The interaction parameter indicates that strong interaction exists both in the surface adsorption layer and in the micelle. The strength of the interaction is similar to that of conventional alkyl quaternary ammonium salt/alkyl sodium sulfate mixed system. This means the synergism in the bolaamphiphile/SDS mixed system is mainly caused by the electrostatic interaction between the hydrophilic head group, but not apparently affected by the hydrophobic part of the bola molecules.

Abstract:The interactions among neutral polymer polyacrylamide (PAM) and the biosurfactant Surfactin and four betaines, N-dodecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate (SDDAB), N-tetradecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate (STDAB), N-hexadecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate (SHDAB), and N-dodecyl-N,N-dimethyl-2-ammonio-acetate (C12BE), in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) have been studied by surface tension measurements, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and rheological experiments. It has been confirmed that the length of alkyl chain is a key parameter of interaction between betaines and PAM. Differences in scattering contrast between X-ray and neutrons for surfactants and PAM molecules provide the opportunity to separately follow the changes of structure of PAM and surfactant aggregates. At concentrations of betaines higher than CMC (critical micelle concentration) and C2 (CMC of surfactant with the presence of polymer), spherical micelles are formed in betaines and betaines/PAM solutions. Transition from spherical to rod-like aggregates (micelles) has been observed in solutions of Surfactin and Surfactin/SDDAB ({\alpha}Surfactin = 0.67 (molar fraction)) with addition of 0.8 wt % of PAM. The conformation change of PAM molecules only can be observed for Surfactin/SDDAB/PAM system. Viscosity values follow the structural changes suggested from scattering measurements i.e., gradually increases for mixtures PAM -> Surfactin/PAM -> Surfactin/SDDAB/PAM in PBS.

Abstract:The micellization behavior and the wetting behavior of quasi-binary mixture of anionic disodium poly(ethylene glycol) sulfosuccinate (SES) with nonionic diethanolamide (CDA) in which their hydrophobic moieties were derived from coconut oil in aqueous solution were studied by the tensiometry, the UV–vis spectroscopic method and the angular measurement, respectively. Based on the regular solution theory and the pseudo-phase separation model, these micellization parameters including the mixed critical micelle concentration and its ideal value, the mixed micellar composition, the activity coefficient in mixed micelle and the interaction parameter between species were successfully estimated using the treatments of the Clint's and the Rubingh's models. The dependance of the value of mixed cmc and the mixed micellar composition on the composition of binary mixture in bulk solution can account for by the conformational compatibility, the electrostatic interaction between anionic heads of SES and the steric effect, etc. These related thermodynamic parameters, which were predicted based on both the Rubingh's and the Meada's models, indicate that the spontaneous micellization is an exothermally entropy-driven process, and the variation of the dehydration behavior of hydrophilic groups with the composition of surfactant mixture in bulk phase leads to a difference in the entropy share in Gibbs free energy change. The synergistic behavior of wetting of quasi-binary surfactant mixture on quartz plate is in accordance with the case in the micellization process. The contact angle in concentrated solution depends greatly on the composition of mixture in bulk phase. The adhesion work and the adhesion tension again confirm the importance about the density and the orientation of surfactants adsorbed at quartz surface. The difference in the optimum value of mixing ratio in surfactant mixture implies the different molecular interaction behaviors in two processes of micellization and wetting. These findings would be beneficial to understand the molecular interaction and further design the related formulations used in many practical occasions.

Abstract:The effect of surfactant concentration on the complex structures of the thermosensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) with sodium n-dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in dilute aqueous solutions and below the lower critical solution temperature were investigated using viscometry, two-dimensional nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (2D NOESY), and pulsed-field gradient diffusion nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The interactions of PNIPAM and SDS were found to exhibit strong dependences on the SDS concentration. The amount of polymer-bound and free SDS at various SDS concentrations was calculated from the diffusion coefficients of SDS. At SDS concentrations below the critical aggregation concentration (CAC) of around 0.86 mM, the interaction between PNIPAM and SDS was very minimal, resulting in almost no change in the intrinsic viscosity and hydrodynamic size of the polymer. At SDS concentrations above 0.86 mM but below 7.0 mM, the intrinsic viscosity of the polymer as well as the amount of polymer-bound SDS and the intensities of the cross-peaks in the 2D NOESY NMR spectra all increased linearly with increased SDS concentration, resulting from enhanced interaction between PNIPAM and SDS. However, the amount of polymer-free SDS remained almost constant at around 0.86 mM near the CAC. At SDS concentrations above 7.0 mM, almost no more SDS was adsorbed onto PNIPAM and the amount of polymer-bound SDS remained constant, indicating the saturation of the PNIPAM chain with SDS.
A molecular dynamics study of free energy of micelle formation for sodium dodecyl sulfate in water and its size distribution.

Abstract:Free energy of micelle formation has been evaluated for spherical sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in water by a thermodynamic integration method combined with a series of large-scale molecular dynamics calculations following the chemical species model. In particular, free energy change delta mu(n+1)0 with respect to the addition of one surfactant molecule to the spherical micelle of size n was obtained as a function of n. The free energy profile showed a minimum followed by a maximum, which corresponds to a peak in the size distribution. The calculated peak size n = 57 near its critical micelle concentration is in good agreement with the experimental averaged aggregation number n = 55-75 of the SDS micelle. The distribution showed a rather sharp peak, indicating that the size is almost a monodisperse one. The size is likely to be insensitive to the total concentration of the surfactant.

Abstract:A hexameric cationic ammonium surfactant (PAHB), in which six amphiphilic moieties were connected by a star-shaped spacer group, adopted star-shaped, claw-like, and pyramid-like molecular configurations in aqueous solution, depending on the concentration. Herein, we studied the effect of adding sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on the configuration and aggregation behavior of PAHB. Taking these three configurations of PAHB as initial states, the addition of SDS caused transitions of the star-shaped and claw-like configurations into a pyramid-like configuration, whilst the pyramid-like configuration remained unchanged. Moreover, the SDS/PAHB aggregates experienced transition from small spheres to large spherical fingerprint-like aggregates, no matter the initial state of PAHB. Molecular packing in the aggregates was also studied. These results have improved our understanding about the cooperative interactions between star-shaped oligomeric surfactants and monomeric surfactants, which should guide future applications of this unique type of surfactant.

Abstract:We studied the formation and growth of miscellaneous mixed micelles in dendrimer and surfactant mixtures. NMR techniques including (1)H NMR titration, diffusion (PGSE and DOSY) measurement, and NOE analysis were used to investigate the shape, size, interaction mode, spatial localization, and molecular orientation of the formed dendrimer/surfactant aggregates at different stages. The results suggest the formation of the following supramolecular aggregates when an equal molar concentration of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) and sodium deoxycholate (SDC) were added into a generation 4 (G4) cationic dendrimer: (1) the encapsulation of the two surfactants in the interior pockets of dendrimer at extremely low surfactant concentrations; (2) the binding of SDS on the surface of G4 dendrimer above the saturated encapsulation concentration; (3) the formation of globular SDS micelles and SDC dimer in the aqueous solution above the CMC of each surfactant; (4) the accumulation of SDS molecules on the surface of dendrimer in a bilayer fashion at high surfactant concentrations; (5) the interactions of dendrimer with the globular SDS micelles; and (6) the encapsulation of SDC monomers or dimers in the globular SDS micelles. The competitive binding/encapsulation of the two surfactants at different stages was evaluated. The results provide a new insight into the interactions of dendrimers with mixed surfactant systems.
Microcalorimetric and SAXS Determination of PEO-SDS Interactions: The Effect of Cosolutes Formed by Ions

Abstract:The effect of different ionic cosolutes (NaCl, Na$_2$SO$_4$, Li$_2$SO$_4$, NaSCN, Na$_2$[Fe(CN)5NO], and Na$_3$[Co(NO)$_6$]) on the interaction between sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) was examined by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and isothermal titration calorimetric techniques. The critical aggregation concentration values (cac), the saturation concentration ($C_2$), the integral enthalpy change for aggregate formation ($\Delta H_{\mbox{agg}}$(int)) and the standard free energy change of micelle adsorption on the macromolecule chain ( $\Delta\Delta G_{\mbox{agg}}$) were derived from the calorimetric titration curves. In the presence of 1.00 mmol L$^{-1}$ cosolute, no changes in the parameters were observed when compared with those obtained for SDS-PEO interactions in pure water. For NaCl, Na$_2$SO$_4$, Li$_2$SO$_4$, and NaSCN at 10.0 and 100 mmol L$^{-1}$, the cosolute presence lowered cac, increased $C_2$, and the PEO-SDS aggregate became more stable. In the presence of Na$_2$[Fe(CN)5NO], the calorimetric titration curves changed drastically, showing a possible reduction in the PEO-SDS degree of interaction, possibility disrupting the formed nanostructure; however, the SAXS data confirmed, independent of the small energy observed, the presence of aggregates adsorbed on the polymer chain.
The study of micellar transitions in mixed systems of dibranched cationic/nonionic fluorinated surfactants using various physicochemical methods

Abstract:In this study, a new method was introduced to induce micellar transitions by using vesicles formed from mixed surfactants, which offer enhanced stability. Different physicochemical analysis methods were used to study the transition mechanism and the aggregation behavior of the mixed aqueous system composed of the double‐chain cationic didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) and a single‐chain nonionic fluorinated surfactant undecafluoro n‐pentyl decaoxyethylene ether (C5F11(EO)10), by varying the fraction of DDAB, then the total surfactant concentration of DDAB/C5F11(EO)10 mixed system at XDDAB = 0.9. The obtained results indicated that the addition of the fluorinated surfactant C5F11(EO)10 to the mixed system resulted in a reduction of the surface tension (γ) and a decrease in the Electrical conductivity (K). Furthermore, even at high total concentrations of the mixed system, the conductivity and charge density at the surface remained stable. As XDDAB values increased, a higher degree of dissociation (α) was observed, along with negative values in the thermodynamic parameters of micellization (ΔGCMC° , ΔGCVC° , and ΔGads° ), confirming the transition from micelles to vesicles. The dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis revealed the formation of two stable types of aggregates at both low and high concentrations, as supported by the zeta potential (ζ). Upon increasing the concentration of surfactants, UV–Vis absorption measurements indicated that small spherical micelles grow into large multilamellar vesicles, as evidenced by an increase in turbidity and confirmed transmission electron microscopy images.

Abstract:The concentration profiles of monomers and counterions in star-branched polyelectrolyte micelles are calculated through Monte-Carlo simulations, using the simplest freely-jointed chain model. We have investigated the onset of different regimes corresponding to the spherical and Manning condensation of counterions as a function of the strength of the Coulomb coupling. The Monte-Carlo results are in fair agreement with the predictions of Self-Consistent-Field analytical models. We have simulated a real system of diblock copolymer micelles of (sodium-polystyrene-sulfonate)(NaPSS)-- (polyethylene-- propylene)(PEP) with f=54 hydrophilic branches of N=251 monomers at room temperature in salt-free solution and compared the calculated form factor with our neutron-scattering data.

Abstract:The interactions of polyelectrolyte poly (sodium styrene sulfonate or NaPSS) and anionic surfactants, sodium glycodeoxycholate (SGDC) and sodium tetradecyl sulfate (STS), as well as their combination (SGDC + STS) at different mole fraction ratios, were investigated using surface tension analysis. In the SGDC + STS binary mixture, when the amount of NaPSS (0.005–0.03%) increased from 0.0 to 1.0, increasing the critical micellization concentration (cmc) of the mixtures. The minimum cmc values were found from 0.833 to 1.480 mmol L −1 in the presence of 0.03% of NaPSS. Clint, Rubingh, Motomura, and Rodenas approaches were used to evaluate the ideal cmc, activity coefficients ( f i ), interaction parameter (– β ), micellar compositions ( x ), and ideal micellar composition of ( x id ) of SGDC + STS mixtures. Synergism has been demonstrated by the experimental values of c 0m being lower than the ideal values in water. Moreover, by adding NaPSS from 0.005 to 0.03%, the synergism interaction was eliminated and antagonism behavior was developed. The standard Gibb's free energy of micellization ( and surface excess ( Γ ) and surface area per absorbed molecules ( A min ) was decreased or increased depending on NaPSS amount in the SGDC + STS mixture with varying .

Abstract:The self-assembly of two nonionic surfactants, pentaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E5) and n-dodecyl-{\ss}-maltoside ({\ss}-C12G2), in the presence of a purpose-synthesized silica sol of uniform particle size (diameter 16 nm) has been studied by adsorption measurements, dynamic light scattering and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) using a H2O/D2O mixture matching the silica, in order to highlight the structure of the surfactant aggregates. For C12E5 strong aggregative adsorption onto the silica beads, with a high plateau value of the adsorption isotherm above the CMC was found. SANS measurements were made at a series of loadings, from zero surfactant up to maximum surface coverage. It is found that the spherical core-shell model nicely reproduces the SANS data up to and including the local maximum at q = 0.42 nm-1 but not in the Porod region of high q, indicating that the surface area of the adsorbed surfactant is underestimated by the model of a uniform adsorbed layer. A satisfactory representation of the entire scattering profiles is obtained with the model of micelle-decorated silica beads, indicating that C12E5 is adsorbed as spherical micellar aggregates. This behaviour is attributed to the high surface curvature of the silica which prevents an effective packing of the hydrophobic chains of the amphiphile in a bilayer configuration. For the maltoside surfactant {\ss}-C12G2 very weak adsorption on the silica beads was found. The SANS profile indicates that this surfactant forms oblate ellipsoidal micelles in the silica dispersion, as in the absence of the silica beads.

Abstract:We investigated the aggregation behaviour of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (AMIMCl) ionic liquid at three temperatures 323 K, 333 K and 343 K using 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) chemical shift and Pulsed-Field Gradient (PFG) spin-echo NMR self-diffusion measurements. Chemical shifts of SDS protons and diffusion coefficients of SDS as a function of the surfactant concentration have breakpoints, which indicate an onset of the surfactant micellisation. We estimated the critical micelle concentration (cmc) with high accuracy from SDS methyl protons' chemical shifts and the micelles' average aggregation number from diffusion coefficients. The formation of micelles does not influence the diffusion and chemical shifts of AMIMCl.We determined water concentration in the samples from the NMR spectra. We did not find evidence that water affects the aggregation process since water content practically does not influence the SDS protons' chemical shifts and diffusion coefficients. However, water appears to influence the diffusion and chemical shifts of AMIMCl.We also investigated the behaviour of SDS in 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium diethyl phosphate (EMIMDEP) hydrophilic ionic liquid. The value of the Gordon parameter of EMIMDEP indicates that it does not possess the ability to support the self-assembly of amphiphiles. Within this work, we treat the system SDS/EMIMDEP as a reference one.SDS forms a lamellar phase in AMIMCl at high concentration, as revealed by Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) and Polarised Optical Microscopy (POM) investigations. At about 358 K, a transition from the lamellar phase to the isotropic liquid phase occurs. No other liquid-crystalline phase in this system was determined.

Abstract:The present work demonstrates that the use of a nonionic surfactant in the mobile phase together with light scattering coupled to size exclusion chromatography (SEC) provides an accurate determination of macromolecular dimensions of hydrophobically modified water-soluble polymer and polyelectrolyte, i.e., weight-average molar mass M(w) and polydispersity I(p). This method, called micellar SEC, is based on the dissociation of the aggregates in aqueous solution and the formation of mixed micelles between the surfactant and the polymer hydrophobic groups. The methodology and its application are presented for synthetic sulfonated polyacrylamides (5 and 20 mol %) modified with three hydrophobic alkyl side groups (C8, C12, and C18) and with Triton X-100 as a nonionic surfactant and are discussed according to the associativity of polymers. The results are compared to those obtained by classical SEC in 0.1 M NaNO(3) and by static light scattering in formamide solution.
