Abstract:We study the moduli spaces of polygons in R^2 and R^3, identifying them with subquotients of 2-Grassmannians using a symplectic version of the Gel'fand-MacPherson correspondence. We show that the bending flows defined by Kapovich-Millson arise as a reduction of the Gel'fand-Cetlin system on the Grassmannian, and with these determine the pentagon and hexagon spaces up to equivariant symplectomorphism. Other than invocation of Delzant's theorem, our proofs are purely polygon-theoretic in nature.

Abstract:In this paper we describe some recent results on the geometry of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. We surveyed new and classical metrics on the moduli spaces of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces and their geometric properties. We then discussed the Mumford goodness and generalized goodness of various metrics on the moduli spaces and their deformation invariance. By combining with the dual Nakano negativity of the Weil-Petersson metric we derive various consequences such that the infinitesimal rigidity, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the log Chern number computations.

Abstract:For a family $\mathcal{C}$ of properly embedded curves in the 2-dimensional disk $\mathbb{D}^{2}$ satisfying certain uniqueness properties, we consider convex polygons $P\subset \mathbb{D}^{2}$ and define a metric $d$ on $P$ such that $(P,d)$ is a geodesically complete metric space whose geodesics are precisely the curves $\left\{ c\cap P\bigm\vert c\in \mathcal{C}\right\}.$ Moreover, in the special case $\mathcal{C}$ consists of all Euclidean lines, it is shown that $P$ with this new metric is not isometric to any convex domain in $\mathbb{R} ^{2}$ equipped with its Hilbert metric. We generalize this construction to certain classes of uniquely geodesic metric spaces homeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^{2}.$

Geometric construction of homology classes in Riemannian manifolds covered by products of hyperbolic planes

Abstract:We study the homology of Riemannian manifolds of finite volume that are covered by an $r$-fold product $(\mathbb{H}^2)^r = \mathbb{H}^2 \times \ldots \times \mathbb{H}^2$ of hyperbolic planes. Using a variation of a method developed by Avramidi and Nguyen-Phan, we show that any such manifold $M$ possesses, up to finite coverings, an arbitrarily large number of compact oriented flat totally geodesic $r$-dimensional submanifolds whose fundamental classes are linearly independent in the homology group $H_r(M;\mathbb{Z})$.

A geometric description of the m-cluster categories of type D_n

Abstract:We show that the m-cluster category of type D_n is equivalent to a certain geometrically-defined category of arcs in a punctured regular nm-m+1-gon. This generalises a result of Schiffler for m=1. We use the notion of the mth power of a translation quiver to realise the m-cluster category in terms of the cluster category.

Abstract:The disjointness graph of a set system is a graph whose vertices are the sets, two being connected by an edge if and only if they are disjoint. It is known that the disjointness graph G of any system of segments in the plane is χ-bounded, that is, its chromatic number χ ( G ) is upper bounded by a function of its clique number ω ( G ) . Here we show that this statement does not remain true for systems of polygonal chains of length 2. We also construct systems of polygonal chains of length 3 such that their disjointness graphs have arbitrarily large girth and chromatic number. In the opposite direction, we show that the class of disjointness graphs of (possibly self-intersecting) 2-way infinite polygonal chains of length 3 is χ-bounded: for every such graph G, we have χ ( G ) ≤ ( ω ( G ) ) 3 + ω ( G ) .

Geometric Combinatorics of Polynomials I: The Case of a Single Polynomial

Abstract:There are many different algebraic, geometric and combinatorial objects that one can attach to a complex polynomial with distinct roots. In this article we introduce a new object that encodes many of the existing objects that have previously appeared in the literature. Concretely, for every complex polynomial $p$ with $d$ distinct roots and degree at least 2, we produce a canonical compact planar 2-complex that is a compact metric version of a tiled phase diagram. It has a locally CAT(0) metric that is locally Euclidean away from a finite set of interior points indexed by the critical points of $p$, and each of its 2-cells is a metric rectangle. From this planar rectangular 2-complex one can use metric graphs known as metric cacti and metric banyans to read off several pieces of combinatorial data: a chain in the partition lattice, a cyclic factorization of a d-cycle, a real noncrossing partition (also known as a primitive d-major), and the monodromy permutations for the polynomial. This article is the first in a series.

Abstract:In many areas of applied geometric/numeric computational mathematics, including geo-mapping, computer vision, computer graphics, finite element analysis, medical imaging, geometric design, and solid modeling, one has to compute incidences, adjacencies and ordering of cells, generally using disparate and often incompatible data structures and algorithms. This paper introduces computational topology algorithms to discover the 2D/3D space partition induced by a collection of geometric objects of dimension 1D/2D, respectively. Methods and language are those of basic geometric and algebraic topology. Only sparse vectors and matrices are used to compute both spaces and maps, i.e., the chain complex, from dimension zero to three.

Geometric Combinatorics of Polynomials II: Polynomials and Cell Structures

Abstract:This article introduces a finite piecewise Euclidean cell complex homeomorphic to the space of monic centered complex polynomials of degree $d$ whose critical values lie in a fixed closed rectangular region. We call this the branched rectangle complex since its points are indexed by marked $d$-sheeted planar branched covers of the fixed rectangle. The vertices of the cell structure are indexed by the combinatorial "basketballs" studied by Martin, Savitt and Singer. Structurally, the branched rectangle complex is a full subcomplex of a direct product of two copies of the order complex of the noncrossing partition lattice. Topologically, it is homeomorphic to the closed $2n$-dimensional ball where $n=d-1$. Metrically, the simplices in each factor are orthoschemes. It can also be viewed as a compactification of the space of all monic centered complex polynomials of degree $d$. We also introduce a finite piecewise Euclidean cell complex homeomorphic to the space of monic centered complex polynomials of degree $d$ whose critical values lie in a fixed closed annular region. We call this the branched annulus complex since its points are indexed by marked $d$-sheeted planar branched covers of the fixed <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://annulus.It" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> can be constructed from the branched rectangle complex as a cellular quotient by isometric face identifications. And it can be viewed as a compactification of the space of all monic centered complex polynomials of degree $d$ with distinct roots. Finally, the branched annulus complex deformation retracts to the branched circle complex, which we identify with the dual braid complex. Our explicit embedding of the dual braid complex as a spine for the space of polynomials with distinct roots provides a direct proof that these two classifying spaces for the braid group are homotopy equivalent.

Abstract:It is known that the space of convex polygons in the Euclidean plane with fixed normals, up to homotheties and translations, endowed with the area form, is isometric to a hyperbolic polyhedron. In this note we show a class of convex polygons in the Lorentzian plane such that their moduli space, if the normals are fixed and endowed with a suitable area, is isometric to a spherical polyhedron. These polygons have an infinite number of vertices, are space-like, contained in the future cone of the origin, and setwise invariant under the action of a linear isometry.

Complex Hyperbolic Geometry of Chain Links

Abstract:The complex hyperbolic triangle group $\Gamma=\Delta_{4,\infty,\infty;\infty}$ acting on the complex hyperbolic plane ${\bf H}^2_{\mathbb C}$ is generated by complex reflections $I_1$, $I_2$, $I_3$ such that the product $I_2I_3$ has order four, the products $I_3I_1$, $I_1I_2$ are parabolic and the product $I_1I_3I_2I_3$ is an accidental parabolic element. Unexpectedly, the product $I_1I_2I_3I_2$ is a hidden accidental parabolic element. We show that the 3-manifold at infinity of $\Delta_{4,\infty,\infty;\infty}$ is the complement of the chain link $8^4_1$ in the 3-sphere. In particular, the quartic cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold $S^3-8^4_1$ admits a spherical CR-uniformization. The proof relies on a new technique to show that the ideal boundary of the Ford domain is an infinite-genus handlebody. Motivated by this result and supported by the previous studies of various authors, we conjecture that the chain link $C_p$ is an ancestor of the 3-manifold at infinity of the critical complex hyperbolic triangle group $\Delta_{p,q,r;\infty}$, for $3 \leq p \leq 9$.

Faces of platonic solids in all dimensions

Abstract:This paper considers Platonic solids/polytopes in the real Euclidean space R^n of dimension 3 <= n < infinity. The Platonic solids/polytopes are described together with their faces of dimensions 0 <= d <= n-1. Dual pairs of Platonic polytopes are considered in parallel. The underlying finite Coxeter groups are those of simple Lie algebras of types An, Bn, Cn, F4 and of non-crystallographic Coxeter groups H3, H4. Our method consists in recursively decorating the appropriate Coxeter-Dynkin diagram. Each recursion step provides the essential information about faces of a specific dimension. If, at each recursion step, all of the faces are in the same Coxeter group orbit, i.e. are identical, the solid is called Platonic.

Abstract:We construct a space of string diagrams, which are a type of fatgraph with some additional data, and show that there are string topology operations on the chains of the free loop space of a closed Riemannian manifold which are parameterized by the chains on the space of string diagrams. These operations are shown to recover known structure on homology of the free loop space.

Abstract:Persistent homology has emerged as a novel tool for data analysis in the past two decades. However, there are still very few shapes or even manifolds whose persistent homology barcodes (say of the Vietoris-Rips complex) are fully known. Towards this direction, let $P_n$ be the boundary of a regular polygon in the plane with $n$ sides; we describe the homotopy types of Vietoris-Rips complexes of $P_n$. Indeed, when $n=(k+1)!!$ is an odd double factorial, we provide a complete characterization of the homotopy types and persistent homology of the Vietoris-Rips complexes of $P_n$ up to a scale parameter $r_n$, where $r_n$ approaches the diameter of $P_n$ as $n\to\infty$. Surprisingly, these homotopy types include spheres of all dimensions. Roughly speaking, the number of higher-dimensional spheres appearing is linked to the number of equilateral (but not necessarily equiangular) stars that can be inscribed into $P_n$. As our main tool we use the recently-developed theory of cyclic graphs and winding fractions. Furthermore, we show that the Vietoris-Rips complex of an arbitrarily dense subset of $P_n$ need not be homotopy equivalent to the Vietoris-Rips complex of $P_n$ itself, and indeed, these two complexes can have different homology groups in arbitrarily high dimensions. As an application of our results, we provide a lower bound on the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between $P_n$ and the circle.

Abstract:We prove that any convex geometry $\mathcal{A}=(U,\mathcal{C})$ on $n$ points and any ideal $\mathcal{I}=(U',\mathcal{C}')$ of $\mathcal{A}$ can be realized as the intersection pattern of an open convex polyhedral cone $K\subseteq {\mathbb R}^n$ with the orthants of ${\mathbb R}^n$. Furthermore, we show that $K$ can be chosen to have at most $m$ facets, where $m$ is the number of critical rooted circuits of $\mathcal{A}$. We also show that any convex geometry of convex dimension $d$ is realizable in ${\mathbb R}^d$ and that any multisimplicial complex (a basic example of an ideal of a convex geometry) of dimension $d$ is realizable in ${\mathbb R}^{2d}$ and that this is best possible. From our results it also follows that distributive lattices of dimension $d$ are realizable in ${\mathbb R}^{d}$ and that median systems are realizable. We leave open %the question whether each median system of dimension $d$ is realizable in ${\mathbb R}^{O(d)}$.

M-Representation of Polytopes

Abstract:We introduce the M-representation of polytopes, which makes it possible to compute linear transformations, convex hulls, and Minkowski sums with linear complexity in the dimension of the polytopes. When the polytope is a convex hull of a zonotope and a polytope, the representation size can be smaller than any of the known representations (V-representation, H-representation, and Z-representation). We also provide a variant of the M-representation: The chain representation is more compact and we can directly use it to compute linear transformations and convex hulls -- for all other operations on the chain representation, one requires a conversion to the M-representation.

Geometric Structures on the Complement of a Projective Arrangement

Abstract:Consider a complex projective space with its Fubini-Study metric. We study certain one parameter deformations of this metric on the complement of an arrangement (= finite union of hyperplanes) whose Levi-Civita connection is of Dunkl type. Interesting examples are obtained from the arrangements defined by finite complex reflection groups. We determine a parameter interval for which the metric is locally of Fubini-Study type, flat, or complex-hyperbolic. We find a finite subset of this interval for which we get a complete orbifold or at least a Zariski open subset thereof, and we analyze these cases in some detail (e.g., we determine their orbifold fundamental group). In this set-up, the principal results of Deligne-Mostow on the Lauricella hypergeometric differential equation and work of Barthel-Hirzebruch-Höfer on arrangements in a projective plane appear as special cases. Along the way we produce in a geometric manner all the pairs of complex reflection groups with isomorphic discriminants, thus providing a uniform approach to work of Orlik-Solomon.

Abstract:Inspired by a theorem by Skornjakov–Hughes–Pasini [8], [5], [6] and a problem which turned up in our recent paper [11], we start a study of epimorphisms with source a thick generalized m-gon and target a thin generalized m-gon. In this first part of the series, we classify the cases m=3,4 and 6 when the polygons are finite. Then we show that the infinite case is very different, and construct examples which strongly deviate from the finite case. A number of general structure theorems are also obtained. We introduce the theory of locally finitely generated generalized polygons and locally finitely chained generalized polygons along the way.

On the Configurations of Closed Kinematic Chains in three-dimensional Space

Abstract:A kinematic chain in three-dimensional Euclidean space consists of $n$ links that are connected by spherical joints. Such a chain is said to be within a closed configuration when its link lengths form a closed polygonal chain in three dimensions. We investigate the space of configurations, described in terms of joint angles of its spherical joints, that satisfy the the loop closure constraint, meaning that the kinematic chain is closed. In special cases, we can find a new set of parameters that describe the diagonal lengths (the distance of the joints from the origin) of the configuration space by a simple domain, namely a cube of dimension $n-3$. We expect that the new findings can be applied to various problems such as motion planning for closed kinematic chains or singularity analysis of their configuration spaces. To demonstrate the practical feasibility of the new method, we present numerical examples.
