Abstract:For many applications in graphics, design and human computer interaction, it is essential to reliably estimate the visual saliency of images. In this paper, we propose a visual saliency detection method that combines the respective merits of color saliency boosting and global region based contrast schemes to achieve more accurate saliency maps. Our method is compared with existing saliency detection methods when evaluated using four public available datasets. Experimental results show that our method consistently outperformed current state-of-the-art methods on predicting human fixations. We also demonstrate how the extracted saliency map can be used for image classification .

Abstract:Visual saliency is an extremely hot topic in image and video processing. Our paper addresses a novel method for saliency detection, which conveys the photographers' idea of a scene. It consists of analyzing the photo elements like color, depth-of-field (DOF) and composition. We use the color spatial distribution feature to calculate the initial saliency. A simple but efficient classifier is trained to discriminate the low DOF image. For this kind of images we find the focal area to refine the initial saliency. The saliency map will be further adjusted by an image composition analysis step to generate the final output. We compare our framework with state-of-the-art algorithms. Experimental results show that, our method out-performs the previous methods in many cases, especially in the low DOF situation. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:This paper presents a framework to detect salient objects from natural images through simulating human perception. We think perception saturation, generated by microsaccades in gaze, is the primary reason why human brains export consciousness of salient objects. Perception saturation is represented by using amplitude of microsaccades (AOM). When the AOM or changes of the AOM tend to zero, human perception becomes saturated. Motivated by this analysis, we construct a group of learning-based models to detect a salient object in a coarse-to-fine sequence. Firstly, a small image is selected to minimize the AOM so as to saturate the perception. Then, neural networks with random weights (NNRW) are chosen to simulate the received visual stimuli. In order to examine the changes of AOM, a positive feedback loop is constructed which executes the procedure of “pixel sampling-learning classification” iteratively. The final fixation area after iterations is regarded as a salient object. The proposed algorithm is based on unsupervised learning and data-driven completely. Our results based on open image datasets show that the proposed method achieves better performance compared to those existing unsupervised algorithms.

Abstract:Aiming at the problems of intensive background noise, low accuracy, and high computational complexity of the current significant object detection methods, the visual saliency detection algorithm based on Hierarchical Principal Component Analysis (HPCA) has been proposed in the paper. Firstly, the original RGB image has been converted to a grayscale image, and the original grayscale image has been divided into eight layers by the bit surface stratification technique. Each image layer contains significant object information matching the layer image features. Secondly, taking the color structure of the original image as the reference image, the grayscale image is reassigned by the grayscale color conversion method, so that the layered image not only reflects the original structural features but also effectively preserves the color feature of the original image. Thirdly, the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) has been performed on the layered image to obtain the structural difference characteristics and color difference characteristics of each layer of the image in the principal component direction. Fourthly, two features are integrated to get the saliency map with high robustness and to further refine our results; the known priors have been incorporated on image organization, which can place the subject of the photograph near the center of the image. Finally, the entropy calculation has been used to determine the optimal image from the layered saliency map; the optimal map has the least background information and most prominently saliency objects than others. The object detection results of the proposed model are closer to the ground truth and take advantages of performance parameters including precision rate (PRE), recall rate (REC), and F-measure (FME). The HPCA model’s conclusion can obviously reduce the interference of redundant information and effectively separate the saliency object from the background. At the same time, it had more improved detection accuracy than others.

Abstract:It is well known that visual attention and saliency mechanisms play an important role in human visual perception. This paper proposes a novel bottom-up saliency mechanism through scale space analysis. The research on human perception had shown that our ability to perceive a visual scene with different scales is described with the Contrast-Sensitivity Function (CSF). Motivated by this observation, we model the saliency as weighted average of the multi-scale analysis of the visual scene, where the weights of the middle spatial frequency bands are larger than others, following the CSF. This method is tested on natural images. The experimental results show that this approach is able to quickly extract salient regions which are consistent with human visual perception, both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Abstract:Models of low-level saliency predict that when we first look at a photograph our first few eye movements should be made towards visually conspicuous objects. Two experiments investigated this prediction by recording eye fixations while viewers inspected pictures of room interiors that contained objects with known saliency characteristics. Highly salient objects did attract fixations earlier than less conspicuous objects, but only in a task requiring general encoding of the whole picture. When participants were required to detect the presence of a small target, then the visual saliency of nontarget objects did not influence fixations. These results support modifications of the model that take the cognitive override of saliency into account by allowing task demands to reduce the saliency weights of task-irrelevant objects. The pictures sometimes contained incongruent objects that were taken from other rooms. These objects were used to test the hypothesis that previous reports of the early fixation of congruent objects have not been consistent because the effect depends upon the visual conspicuity of the incongruent object. There was an effect of incongruency in both experiments, with earlier fixation of objects that violated the gist of the scene, but the effect was only apparent for inconspicuous objects, which argues against the hypothesis.

Abstract:Saliency detection aims to focus attention on the important parts of a map, which is an excellent ability of human visual system. In this paper, we present a saliency detection model based on the principle that the pixels belong to the background are more disperse than the ones of the target area. Color contrast in different channels is employed to classify the pixels. Our method outperformed five art-of-the-state saliency detection algorithms on the ground-truth evaluation experiment by achieving good precision-recall curve and indicates that disperse degree of color is an importance feature in saliency detection.

Abstract:To explore whether the conscious options or eye movements of human beings are influenced by bottom-up saliency, both theoretical and experimental analysis are presented in this paper. In the first experiment, the subjects are required to indicate most interesting regions of test pictures in the scene. In the second experiment, the subjects are required to look around test pictures in the scene. Then, the bottom-up saliency values of test pictures are computed by Itti model of that is one well-known visual attention. It is indicated that the interest points and fixation locations are correlated with the bottom-up saliency locations. Thus we propose two methods to study on visual attention that can be used to predict which areas of the images will draw subjects' visual attention: fixation location predictions and interest point predictions.

Abstract:Most visual saliency computing methods build models based on the content of an image without considering the colorized effects. Biologically, human attention can be significantly influenced by color. This study firstly investigates the sole contribution of colors in visual saliency and then proposes a bio-driven saliency detection method with a color factor. To study the color saliency despite the contents, an eye-tracking dataset containing color images and gray-scale images of the same content is proposed, collected from 18 subjects. The CIELab color space was selected to conduct extensive analysis to identify the contribution of colors in guiding visual attention. Based on the observations that some particular colors and combinations of color blocks can attract much attention than others, the influence of colors on visual saliency is represented computationally. Incorporating the color factor, a novel saliency detection model is proposed to model the human color perception prioritization, and a deep neural network model is proposed for eye fixation prediction. Experiments validate that the proposed bio-driven saliency detection models make substantial improvements in finding informative content, and they benefit the detection of salient objects which are close to human visual attention in natural scenes.

Abstract:Visual search is a fundamental process in everyday life, and it has received extensive attention throughout the decades. Numerous theoretical accounts attempt to explain how a visual scene is decomposed into its elements to facilitate the process of visual search. It is suggested that visual search is guided by both the intended goal of the individual, which drives top-down attention, and the physical salience of an object (how different it is from other objects in the visual scene), which drives bottom-up attention. Notably, these forms of attention can interact: a salient cue may drive top-down attention to a particular spatial location and thus improve target detection (Katsuki and Constantinidis, 2014). Bottom-up mechanisms are proposed to create a priority map that directs individuals' attention to objects in the visual scene. Importantly, the priority map framework presumes that a visual scene is decomposed into a series of feature maps by visual neurons that are sensitive to basic visual features of the scene (e.g., feature maps of color and motion). Within each feature map, locations that are significantly different from their neighbors are salient and have higher activation. These feature maps are then combined into a saliency map representing the topographic locations of prominent visual features in the visual scene. A Psychophysical Test of the Saliency Map in V1

Abstract:It has been observed (Snowden J. Exp. Psychol. 1998) that although random variations in colour of the stimulus bars does not disrupt visual search for a target bar defined by its unique orientation among distractor bars of a different orientation, it does impair texture segmentation between textures each defined by a uniform orientation of texture bars. These observations can be accounted for by the proposal that V1 produces a saliency map, as demonstrated by a V1 model (Zhaoping, Soc. Neurosci. abstract, 2002). The ease of the task is determined by the saliency of the target or the texture border, which in turn is determined by the evoked V1 responses subject to contextual influences from the contextual bars. Random colour variations affect performances by altering the contextual influences via intra-cortical interactions. The model predicts that the colour interference on the texture segmentation defined by orientation should become more pronounced as the stimulus bars become thicker and shorter. To test this prediction, subjects reported the orientation, either vertical or horizontal, of an elongated target texture region defined by an area of 2×8 bars that differed in orientation by 90 degrees from the background texture bars. The texture bars were either all fat or all thin. The two cases were equated such that the fat bars were twice as fat as the thin bars which were in turn twice as long. The reaction times of the subjects were measured, and as expected, they were longer with than without the random colour variations of the texture bars. This reaction time increment was used as a measure of the colour interference. The results showed that the fat texture bars resulted in at least a 65% increases in colour interference relative to the case with the thin bars. These results are consistent with the model prediction and thus support the proposal of a saliency map from V1.

Abstract:Image saliency detection provides a powerful tool for predicting where human tends to look at in an image, which has been a long attempt for the computer vision community. In this paper, we propose a biologically-inspired model for computing image saliency. At first, a set of basis functions that accords with visual responses to natural stimuli is learned by using eye-fixation patches from an eye-tracking dataset. Three features are then derived based on the learned basis functions including continuity, clutter contrast, and local contrast. Finally, these three features are combined into the saliency map. The proposed approach is easy to implement and can be used in many image and video content analysis applications. Experiments on a large-scale benchmark dataset and comparisons with a number of the state-of-the-art approaches demonstrate its superiority.

Abstract:Saliency detection has gained popularity in many applications, and many different approaches have been proposed. In this paper, we propose a new approach based on singular value decomposition (SVD) for saliency detection. Our algorithm considers both the human-perception mechanism and the relationship between the singular values of an image decomposed by SVD and its salient regions. The key concept of our proposed algorithms is based on the fact that salient regions are the important parts of an image. The singular values of an image are divided into three groups: large, intermediate, and small singular values. We propose the hypotheses that the large singular values mainly contain information about the non-salient background and slight information about the salient regions, while the intermediate singular values contain most or even all of the saliency information. The small singular values contain little or even none of the saliency information. These hypotheses are validated by experiments. By regularization based on the average information, regularization using the leading largest singular values or regularization based on machine learning, the salient regions will become more conspicuous. In our proposed approach, learning-based methods are proposed to improve the accuracy of detecting salient regions in images. Gaussian filters are also employed to enhance the saliency information. Experimental results prove that our methods based on SVD achieve superior performance compared to other state-of-the-art methods for human-eye fixations, as well as salient-object detection, in terms of the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) score, the linear correlation coefficient (CC) score, the normalized scan-path saliency (NSS) score, the F-measure score, and visual quality. Abstract:A change-detection paradigm was used to explore the effects of topological strucature and brightness contrast on visual perception in three experiments.The results showed that spatial configuration and topological structure changes made to the object parts are significantly easier and quicker to detect than changes made to the shape of object parts.And changes including the stronger contrast in brightness were significantly easier and quicker to detect than those including the weaker contrast in brightness despite the attention condition.These findings were discussed in relation to the nature of visual representations and topological properties.

Abstract:Saliency detection has extensive applications in daily life. In this paper, an efficient saliency-detection method based on wavelet transform and entropy theory is proposed. In the algorithm proposed in this paper, salient regions are viewed as uncommon regions in the background of an image. The uncommon regions can be caused by differences in color, orientation, texture, shape, or other factors. Considering the fact that wavelet coefficients can represent the local features of an image in different scales and orientations, the wavelet transform is therefore employed to identify the salient regions. Unlike those conventional wavelet-based methods, our proposed method need not perform the inverse wavelet transformation; this can reduce the computational requirements. In addition, because the different factors (i.e. color, orientation, texture, shape, etc.) stimulate different aspects of the human visual system, a saliency-map combination scheme based on the entropy theory is devised in this paper, which can evaluate the influence or significance of the different factors. Experimental results show that our method, based on wavelet transformation and entropy theory, can achieve excellent performance in terms of the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) score, the linear correlation coefficient (CC), the normalized scan-path saliency (NSS) score, and visual performance, as compared to existing state-of-the-art methods. Abstract:Saliency detection is widely used in image segmentation,object detection and visual performance evaluations.Image preprocessing is enhanced by imitating the human visual mechanism with a saliency detection method,based on a robust principal component analysis algorithm and multiple color channels.The original image is first transformed into multiple color channels,represented by a matrix with the columns of this matrix linearly correlated.The salient regions are assumed to be the sparse component with the background regions as the low rank component.The robust principal component analysis of this matrix is used to extract the components.Use of a saliency prior and a center prior make the saliency detection model more effective.Tests show that this algorithm outperforms many state-of-the art methods in terms of a quantitative index and the visual effect.
Measuring the attentional effect of the bottom-up saliency map of natural images

Abstract:A saliency map is the bottom-up contribution to the deployment of exogenous attention. It, as well as its underlying neural mechanism, is hard to identify because of the existence of top-down signals. In order to exclude the contamination of top-down signals, invisible natural images were used as our stimuli to guide attention. The saliency map of natural images was calculated according to the model developed by Itti $et\ al.$ [1]. We found a salient region in natural images could attract attention to improve subjects' orientation discrimination performance at the salient region. Furthermore, the attraction of attention increased with the degree of saliency. Our findings suggest that the bottom-up saliency map of a natural image could be generated at a very early stage of visual processing.
Oroxylin a prevents inflammation‐related tumor through down‐regulation of inflammatory gene expression by inhibiting NF‐κB signaling

Abstract:Increasing evidence suggests that inflammatory microenvironment plays a critical role at different stages of tumor development. However, the molecular mechanisms of the interaction between inflammation and proliferation of cancer cells remain poorly defined. Here we reported the inhibitory effects of oroxylin A on the inflammation‐stimulated proliferation of tumor cells and delineated the mechanism of its action. The results indicated that treatment with oroxylin A inhibited NF‐κB p65 nuclear translocation and phosphorylation of IκBα and IKKα/β in both human colon tumor HCT116 cells and human monocytes THP‐1 cells. In addition, in THP‐1 cells, oroxylin A significantly suppressed lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‐induced secretion of prototypical proinflammatory cytokine IL‐6 but not IL‐1β, and it was confirmed at the transcription level. Moreover, oroxylin A inhibited the proliferation of HCT116 cells stimulated by LPS‐induced THP‐1 cells in co‐culture microenvironment. In summary, oroxylin A modulated NF‐κB signaling pathway involved in inflammation‐induced cancer initiation and progression and therefore could be a potential cancer chemoprevention agent for inflammation‐related cancer. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:By the guidance of attention, human visual system is able to locate objects of interest in complex scene. In this paper, we propose a novel visual saliency detection method the conditional saliency for both image and video. Inspired by biological vision, the definition of visual saliency follows a strictly local approach. Given the surrounding area, the saliency is defined as the minimum uncertainty of the local region, namely the minimum conditional entropy, when the perceptional distortion is considered. To simplify the problem, we approximate the conditional entropy by the lossy coding length of multivariate Gaussian data. The final saliency map is accumulated by pixels and further segmented to detect the proto-objects. Experiments are conducted on both image and video. And the results indicate a robust and reliable feature invariance saliency.

Abstract:Detection of visually salient image regions is important for object segmentation, adaptive compression and object recognition. Because of the complex colour, complex surface texture and changeable background in the image, the quality of traditional image saliency detection methods is not high enough to exactly reflect the saliency information of the image. The test results of traditional methods cannot clearly point out the outline of the salient object. Meanwhile, neither do they highlight the most prominent object, nor do they uniformly highlight the entire object. These shortcomings make the saliency map unreliable and inefficient in various applications. To solve these problems, we introduce a method for salient region detection that outputs high resolution saliency maps with high brightness salient objects. Firstly, the image is filtered based on contrast sensitivity function to suppress the redundant image information. Then the saliency map is extracted in both spatial and frequency domains. Finally, the two saliency maps are weighted together to obtain the final saliency map.
