Abstract:The plant availability and phytotoxicity of soil bound residues (BR) of herbicide ZJ0273, a novel acetolactate synthase (ALS) potential inhibitor, to rice (Oryza sativa L.) and corn (Zea mays L.) was investigated in three different soils including a Fluvio-marine yellow loamy soil (S1), a Red clayey soil (S2), and a Coastal saline soil (S3), using 14C-labeling tracer and bioassay techniques. When soils were amended with BR at 0.6, 1.2 and 1.8nmolg−1, dose-dependent and significant inhibition was observed for rice seedlings within 14d after treatment, but no significant inhibition occurred to corn seedlings in the same treatment. Radioactive analysis of soil extracts following sequential extractions showed that the 14C labeled residues of ZJ0273 were released from the amended soil BR upon planting. For example, when amended with 1.8nmolg−1, about 68.3%, 57.0%, and 61.1%, respectively, of the added BR were released in S1, S2, and S3 planted with rice seedlings, whereas 38.9%, 32.7% and 32.6% became available for uptake in the corresponding soils planted with corn seedlings. The released compounds were identified as ZJ0273 and its degradation products M1 and M2, with M2 as the primary component. Bioassay on rice showed that concentration for 50% inhibition (IC50) of ZJ0273, M1, and M2 were 33.16, 1.93 and 0.49μM, respectively. Therefore, BR formed after application of ZJ0273 may become available for plant uptake during rice cultivation and lead to phytotoxic effects, and the phytotoxicity is mainly caused by the release of the biologically active metabolite M2. This knowledge is valuable for designing crop rotation practices so that crop injury and yield losses due to carry-over herbicide phytotoxicity may be avoided.

Abstract:Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.), an invasive tree in Europe, commonly known for its negative impact on biodiversity, is a rich source of phenolic compounds recognized in traditional medicine. Since the metabolite profile depends on the environment and climate, this study aimed to provide the first LC-MS phytochemical screening of the black locust from the Istria region (Croatia). The compounds were extracted from leaves and flowers with 70% ethanol and 80% methanol. Total phenolics (TP) and flavonoids (TF), as well as antioxidant capacity (AC) measured by ABTS (17.49-146.41 mg TE/g DW), DPPH (24.67-118.49 mg TE/g DW), and FRAP (7.38-77.53 mg TE/g DW) assays, were higher in leaf than in flower extracts. Higher TP and total non-flavonoid (TNF) values were displayed in ethanolic than in methanolic extracts. In total, 64 compounds were identified, of which flavonols (20) and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives (15) were the most represented. Flavanols such as catechin dominated in leaf extracts, followed by flavonols, with kaempferol glucuronyl rhamnosyl hexosides as the main compound, respectively. Flower extracts had the highest share of flavones, followed by ellagitannins, with luteolin dirhamnosyl hexosides and vescalagin, respectively, being predominant. The extracts had good quorum sensing, biofilm formation prevention, and eradicating capacity. The results provided new insights into the phytochemical properties of R. pseudoacacia as the first step toward its potential pharmaceutical use.
Allelopathic Potential of Aqueous Extract from Acacia melanoxylon R. Br. on Lactuca sativa

Abstract:We studied the polyphenol (phenolic compounds and flavonoids) composition and allelopathic effects of Acacia melanoxylon R. Br. aerial foliage aqueous extract (0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%) on the seedling growth and plant biomass of the general biotest species, lettuce (Lactuca sativa). Mean leaf fresh weight, leaf dry weight, root fresh weight and root dry weight were decreased following exposure to Acacia aerial foliage, flowers aqueous extract (AFE) and phyllodes aqueous extract (APE) after 6 days. The reduction in plant dry biomass was more than 50% following treatment with AFE. The decrease in mean root length was approximately 37.7% and 29.20% following treatment with Acacia flowers extract (AFE) at 75% and 100% concentration, respectively. Root dry weight of L. sativa was reduced by both flowers and phyllodes extract. The reduction of protein contents in lettuce leaves following Acacia foliage extract proved that both AFE and APE exhibit polyphenols that causes the toxicity which led to decrease in leaf protein contents. High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) was employed to analyze the A. melanoxylon flowers and phyllodes. A total of 13 compounds (accounting for most abundant compounds in flowers and phyllodes) include different flavonoids and phenolic compounds. The phytochemical compounds detected were: Gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, vanillic acid, syringic acid, p-coumaric acid, and ferulic acid. The major flavonoid compounds identified include rutin, luteolin, apigenin, and catechin. Allelopathic effects of flower and phyllodes extracts from A. melanoxylon may be due to the presence of above compounds identified by HPLC analysis.
Signal peptide cleavage site prediction using variants of PSSM

Abstract:Since [1] experimentally indicates a positional dependence, we generalize the familiar position-specific score matrix (PSSM), aka weight matrix, by considering a logodds score for (nonadjacent) -tuple frequencies, each -tuple score weighted by the product of its mutual information and its statistical significance, as measured by a point estimator for the -value of the mutual information. Performance of this new approach, along with other variants of generalized PSSM and profile methods, is measured by receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves for the specific problem of signal peptide cleavage site recognition. We additionally compare Vert’s recent support vector machine string kernel [9], and the method WAM [11]. While in the case of signal peptide cleavage site recognition, the monoresidue PSSM is essentially competitive, within the limits of statistical significance, even against Vert’s support vector machine kernel, diresidue and triresidue PSSM methods display improved performance over monoresidue PSSM for disulfide bond recognition (data for disulfide bond recognition not shown).
Lead accumulation and concomitant reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging in Robinia pseudoacacia are dependent on nitrogen nutrition

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution combined with nitrogen (N) limitation is a major factor preventing revegetation of contaminated land. Woody N 2 -fixing legumes are a natural choice for phytoremediation. However, the physiological responses of woody legumes to lead (Pb) with low N exposure are currently unknown. In the present study, a common Robinia cultivar from Northeast China, inoculated and non-inoculated with rhizobia, was exposed to -Pb or +Pb at moderate (norN) or low N application (lowN). Our results showed that without inoculation, independent of N application, Pb taken up by the roots was allocated to the shoot and inhibited photosynthesis and biomass production. In non-inoculated Robinia , Pb-mediated oxidative stress resulted in reduced H 2 O 2 scavenging as indicated by increased ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity in the leaves and proline contents in the roots, independent of N application. Combined lowN*Pb exposure significantly increased malondialdehyde (MDA) contents in roots and leaves and enhanced APX and dehydroascorbate reductase activities in leaves compared to individual Pb exposure. Rhizobia inoculation raised the abundance of nodules and promoted Pb uptake by roots. Under Pb exposure, inoculation with rhizobia reduced MDA contents, increased proline contents in leaves and roots and enhanced activity of nitrate reductase in the leaves, independent of N application. Under Pb exposure, nitrogenase activity of inoculated Robinia under low- and norN application were similar indicating that enhanced of N 2 -fixation at lowN was counteracted by Pb exposure. These results show that inoculation of Robinia with rhizobia can alleviate Pb toxicity at combined lowN and Pb exposure by reducing oxidative stress.

The Role of Pentacyclic Triterpenoids in the Allelopathic Effects of Alstonia scholaris

Abstract:Alstonia scholaris is a tropical evergreen tree native to South and Southeast Asia. Alstonia forests frequently lack understory species. However, potential mechanisms—particularly the allelochemicals involved—remain unclear. In the present study, we identified allelochemicals of A. scholaris, and clarified the role of allelopathic substances from A. scholaris in interactions with neighboring plants. We showed that the leaves, litter, and soil from A. scholaris inhibited growth of Bidens pilosa—a weed found growing abundantly near A. scholaris forests. The allelochemicals were identified as pentacyclic triterpenoids, including betulinic acid, oleanolic acid, and ursolic acid by using 1H and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. The half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) for radicle growth of B. pilosa and Lactuca sativa ranged from 78.8 μM to 735.2 μM, and ursolic acid inhibited seed germination of B. pilosa. The triterpenoid concentrations in the leaves, litter, and soil were quantified with liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization/tandem mass spectrometry. Ursolic acid was present in forest soil at a concentration of 3,095 μg/g, i.e., exceeding the IC50. In the field, ursolic acid accumulated abundantly in the soil in A. scholaris forests, and suppressed weed growth during summer and winter. Our results indicate that A. scholaris pentacyclic triterpenoids influence the growth of neighboring weeds by inhibiting seed germination, radicle growth, and functioning of photosystem II.

Abstract:Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are known to improve the resistance of host plants against various heavy metal stresses. However, the arsenic (As) resistance mechanism of AMF-inoculated woody legumes remains unclear. In this study, black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) seedlings were cultivated in potted soils inoculated with or without AMF Rhizoglomus intraradices under three different levels of As stress (0, 100, and 200 mg As kg–1 soil) over 4 months. The objective of this paper was to investigate the effects of AMF on plant growth, root morphology, and the content and ratio of endogenous phytohormones and soil glomalin under As stress condition. As stress toxicity suppressed the AM spore germination and colonization, plant growth, and the content of soil glomalin and changed the morphological characteristics of the roots and the balance of endogenous hormone levels in plants. However, R. intraradices inoculation improved the shoot and root dry weights, total root length, root surface area, root volume, and the number of root forks and tips across all As treatments. R. intraradices inoculation obviously decreased the percentage of root length in the 0- to 0.2-mm diameter class and increased those in the 0.5- to 1.0-mm and >1.0-mm diameter classes; the percentages in the 0.2- to 0.5-mm diameter class were less affected by R. intraradices inoculation. The concentrations of the easily extractable glomalin-related (EE-GRSP) and total glomalin-related soil protein (T-GRSP) were higher in the of R. intraradices-inoculated seedlings than those in the non-inoculated seedlings. Furthermore, R. intraradices inoculation increased the concentrations of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and abscisic acid (ABA), but decreased the concentrations of gibberellic acid (GA) and zeatin riboside (ZR). The phytohormone ratios of IAA/ABA, GA/ABA, ZR/ABA, and (IAA + GA + ZR)/IAA in the R. intraradices-inoculated seedlings were lower than those in the non-inoculated seedlings. These results indicated that R. intraradices alleviated As toxicity in R. pseudoacacia seedlings by improving their plant growth, altering root morphology, regulating the concentrations and ratios of phytohormones, and increasing the concentration of soil glomalin. The results suggested that AMF-inoculated R. pseudoacacia seedlings would be a critical factor in successful vegetation restoration and soil development in As-contaminated soils.

Abstract:Woody plants possess great potential for phytoremediation of heavy metal-contaminated soil. A pot trial was conducted to study growth, physiological response, and Cd and Pb uptake and distribution in black locust ( Robinia pseudoacacia L), as well as the rhizosphere bacterial communities in Cd and Pb co-contaminated soil. The results showed that R. pseudoacacia L. had strong physiological regulation ability in response to Cd and Pb stress in contaminated soil. The total chlorophyll, malondialdehyde (MDA), soluble protein, and sulfhydryl contents, as well as antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase) activities in R. pseudoacacia L. leaves under the 40 mg·kg −1 Cd and 1000 mg·kg −1 Pb co-contaminated soil were slightly altered. Cd uptake in R. pseudoacacia L. roots and stems increased, while the Pb content in the shoots of R. pseudoacacia L. under the combined Cd and Pb treatments decreased in relative to that in the single Pb treatments. The bacterial α-diversity indices (e.g., Sobs, Shannon, Simpson, Ace, and Chao) of R. pseudoacacia L. rhizosphere soil under Cd and Pb stress were changed slightly relative to the CK treatment. However, Cd and Pb stress could significantly ( p < 0.05) alter the rhizosphere soil microbial communities. According to heat map and LEfSe (Linear discriminant analysis Effect Size) analysis, Bacillus , Sphingomonas , Terrabacter , Roseiflexaceae , Paenibacillus , and Myxococcaceae at the genus level were notably ( p < 0.05) accumulated in the Cd- and/or Pb-contaminated soil. Furthermore, the MDA content was notably ( p < 0.05) negatively correlated with the relative abundances of Isosphaeraceae , Gaiellales , and Gemmatimonas . The total biomass of R. pseudoacacia L. was positively ( p < 0.05) correlated with the relative abundances of Xanthobacteraceae and Vicinamibacreraceae . Network analysis showed that Cd and Pb combined stress might enhance the modularization of bacterial networks in the R. pseudoacacia L. rhizosphere soil Thus, the assembly of the soil bacterial communities in R. pseudoacacia L. rhizosphere may improve the tolerance of plants in response to Cd and/or Pb stress.

Abstract:Allelopathy can have an important applicaiton in areas of agriculture, especially in integrated protection from weeds, by using of allelopathic crops in different ways. In this research allelopathic effects of invasive species acacia (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) and white goosefood (Chenopodium album L.) are explored on germination of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). Water extracts of dry leaves of white goosefoot and acacia are prepared according tothe method : Norsworthy (2003). Experiment has been made in controlled laboratory conditions. Results of this research show that acacia and white goosefood have negative allelopathy potential and they act inhibitory on germination of tomatoes. Research of allelopathy and allelopathic relationships of weed species and agricultural cultures represents a big challenge for those people who are working in food production, and at the same time can be an instrument of ecologically sustainable agriculture.
Multi-Omics Analysis Reveals the Mechanism by Which RpACBP3 Overexpression Contributes to the Response of Robinia pseudoacacia to Pb Stress

Abstract:Acyl-CoA-binding protein (ACBP) genes have been implicated in lead enrichment and translocation in plants; however, the mechanisms by which these genes contribute to the response to heavy metal stress in various taxa have not been determined. In this study, the molecular mechanisms underlying the response of Robinia pseudoacacia, an economically important deciduous tree, to Pb stress were examined using transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses. RpACBP3 overexpression increased Pb enrichment, translocation, and tolerance. After Pb stress for 3 days, 1125 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 485 differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) were identified between wild-type and RpACBP3-overexpressing R. pseudoacacia strains; after Pb stress for 45 days, 1746 DEGs and 341 DAMs were identified. Joint omics analyses showed that the DEGs and DAMs were co-enriched in α-linoleic acid metabolism and flavonoid biosynthesis pathways. In particular, DEGs and DAMs involved in α-linoleic acid metabolism and flavonoid biosynthesis were up- and down-regulated, respectively. Moreover, RpACBP3 overexpression enhanced the ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species and repair cell membranes under stress by regulating LOX gene expression and increasing the phosphatidylcholine content, thereby improving the tolerance to Pb stress. These findings lay a theoretical foundation for the future application of RpACBP3 genes in plant germplasm resource creation and phytoremediation of Pb contaminated soil in which R. pseudoacacia grow.

Ecophysiological Trade-Off Strategies of Three Gramineous Crops in Response to Root Extracts of Phytolacca americana

Abstract:The invasive Phytolacca americana L. poses a significant threat to local agroforestry ecosystems due to its allelopathic toxicity. However, the ecophysiological response mechanisms of crops to allelochemicals remain unclear. This study investigated the seedling growth, physiological, and biochemical responses of three gramineous crops to the root extracts of P. americana and identified potential allelochemicals of the invader. The germination and seedling growth of three crops were inhibited by extracts differently, with high-concentration extracts causing more severe inhibition on seedling roots in hydroponic (>57%) than soil culture experiments (>18%). This inhibition may be related to representative secondary metabolites such as fatty acyls, alkaloids, and phenols. Despite the significant inhibition of high-concentration extracts on seedling growth, the levels of soluble sugar, soluble protein, and antioxidant enzymes increased synergistically. Under allelopathic stress, three species enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities and metabolite contents at the cost of reducing their shoot, root biomass, and root/shoot ratio. This may be an ecophysiological growth-defense strategy to bolster their resistance to allelopathy. Interestingly, transgenic rice exhibited greater sensitivity to allelochemicals than wild-type rice, resulting in more pronounced growth inhibition and increased levels of most metabolites and antioxidant enzymes. This study highlights the adaptive strategies of three gramineous crops to the allelopathy of invasive P. americana.

Abstract:The present study was designed to assess the allelopathic potential of invasive weed Ageratina adenophora leaf extracts on seed germination and seedling development efficiency of native tree [viz. Quercus leucotrichophora A. Camus (Oak) and Pinus roxburghii Sarg. (Pine)] and crop [( Triticum aestivum L. (Wheat) and Lens culinaris Medik. (Lentil)] species of Kumaun Himalaya. Pot experiments were conducted in the glasshouse of the Botany Department, D.S.B. Campus, Kumaun University Nainital, following a Completely Randomized Block Design (CRBD) with three treatments (C 1 -25%, C 2 -50%, and C 3 -100% of aqueous leaf extract) and one control, each with five replicates. The experiment lasted one year for tree species and continued until the seed maturation phase for crop species. Parameters such as seed germination proportion, root and shoot measurements, biomass, and crop productivity traits were recorded accordingly. Our bioassay results indicated that the inhibitory effect of leaf extracts on the measured traits of the selected native species was proportional to the applied extract concentrations of A. adenophora . Overall, lentil among crops and oak among tree species exhibited more inhibition compared to wheat and pine, respectively. At the highest concentration, reductions of 44%, 34%, 36%, and 24% in biomass production capacity were recorded for wheat, lentil, pine, and oak, respectively, while wheat and lentil productivity decreased by up to 33% and 45%, respectively. These results suggest that water-soluble allelochemicals produced by A. adenophora may impede the establishment of selected crop and tree species in agroecosystems and forest ecosystems invaded by this weed species. However, further studies on the characterization of phytochemicals and their specific role in seed germination and growth are warranted. Furthermore, the allelopathic potential of A. adenophora can be explored for the preparation of biopesticides and nature-friendly option to improve soil health, crop productivity, and reduce environmental pollution and management of this invasive weed.

Isolation of Allelochemicals from Rhododendron capitatum and Their Allelopathy on Three Perennial Herbaceous Plants

Abstract:Rhododendron capitatum community expansion is a major threat to alpine meadow. Allelopathy is an important mediator in managing relationships between plants in natural ecosystems. However, allelopathy and specific allelochemicals of R. capitatum have not been studied yet. In this study, the allelopathy of the foliage litter of R. capitatum was explored on Elymus nutans, Poa pratensis and Medicago ruthenica, and the chemical composition and their allelopathy were studied. The results showed that the aqueous extract of the foliage litter of R. capitatum had an allelopathy of "low concentration promotion and high concentration inhibition" on the germination of E. nutans, P. pratensis, and M. ruthenica. Organic acids, fatty acids, terpenes, phenols, and phenolic acid compounds were identified, with Zanamivir (77.81%), alpha-linolenic acid (18%), Kaurenoic acid (23.50%), 4-hydroxyphenylglycolic acid (21.54%), and Quinic acid (28.24%) having the highest relative content, and all five compounds showed significantly inhibitory effects on seed germination and seedling growth of E. nutans, P. pratensis, and M. ruthenica, which further suggests that the five compounds are the critical allelochemicals for negative allelopathy of R. capitatum. These results highlight the crucial role of inhibitory allelopathy produced by R. capitatum in the establishment and expansion of its populations.

Abstract:The role of rhizobia in alleviating cadmium (Cd) stress in woody legumes is still unclear. Therefore, two types of black locust ( Robinia pseudoacacia L.) with high and low Cd accumulation abilities were selected from 11 genotypes in China, and the effects of rhizobium ( Mesorhizobium huakuii GP1T11) inoculation on the growth, CO 2 and H 2 O gas exchange parameters, Cd accumulation, and the absorption of mineral elements of the high (SX) and low Cd-accumulator (HB) were compared. The results showed that rhizobium-inoculation significantly increased biomass, shoot Cd contents, Cd accumulation, root-to-shoot translocation factor (TF) and the absorption and accumulation of mineral elements in both SX and HB. Rhizobium-inoculation increased chlorophyll a and carotenoid contents, and the intercellular carbon dioxide concentrations in HB plants. Under Cd exposure, the high-accumulator SX exhibited a significant decrease in photosynthetic CO 2 fixation ( Pn ) and an enhanced accumulation of Cd in leaves, but coped with Cd exposure by increasing chlorophyll synthesis, regulating stomatal aperture ( Gs ), controlling transpiration ( Tr ), and increasing the absorption and accumulation of mineral elements. In contrast, the low-accumulator HB was more sensitive to Cd exposure despite preferential accumulation of Cd in roots, with decreased chlorophyll and carotenoid contents, but significantly increased root biomass. Compared to the low-accumulator HB, non-inoculated Cd-exposed SX plants had higher chlorophyll contents, and rhizobium-inoculated Cd-exposed SX plants had higher Pn , Tr , and Gs as well as higher levels of P, K, Fe, Ca, Zn, and Cu. In conclusion, the high- and low-Cd-accumulator exhibited different physiological responses to Cd exposure. Overall, rhizobium-inoculation of black locust promoted the growth and heavy metal absorption, providing an effective strategy for the phytoremediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils by this woody legume.

Abstract:To investigate the influence of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) flower and leaf fall on soil phosphate, we monitored litterfall, litter decomposition, and soil membrane phosphate in a R. pseudoacacia forest on Mt. Ilzasan, Seoul, Korea. R. pseudoacacia flower litter was 30–50% of total litter production in May and the flowers decomposed rapidly. More than 11% of R. pseudoacacia leaf litter decomposed from February to May, while that of Quercus spp. decomposed very little. Fast decomposition of R. pseudoacacia flower and leaf litter significantly increased membrane phosphate in the soil. The rapid nutrient-cycling of R. pseudoacacia through flower litterfall and rapid decomposition benefits the plant itself in the growing season when nutrients demand is increasing. Rapid nutrient-cycling might be a strategy that helps R. pseudoacacia to persist in poor soil environments.

Abstract:Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi colonize roots improving plant water status and tolerance to drought. However, it is not clear whether the presence of AM would affect the photosynthesis and antioxidant gene-enzymes response, which help to alleviate drought stress of the host plant. Here, pot experiments were performed to investigate the effects of Rhizophagus irregularis, an AM fungus, on the tissue water content, photosynthesis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, antioxidant enzyme activity and gene expression in black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) seedlings which were subjected to well-watered or moderate drought stress. Mycorrhizal symbiosis increased relative water content (RWC) of plant roots and leaves, promoted the accumulation of biomass and chlorophyll (Chl) content, and improved photochemistry efficiency, regardless of watering regimes. Mycorrhizal plants had higher SOD, POD, CAT, APX, and GR activities, and the transcript levels of Cu/Zn-SOD. APX and GR, but lower O2-, H2O2 and MDA concentrations in leaves and roots of black locust under drought and well-watered conditions. Results from the present study indicate that AM fungus (R. irregularis) symbiosis can enhance photosynthesis and ROS scavenging capabilities and increase RWC of leaves and roots to alleviate drought stress in black locust. Further research is needed to elucidate the relations among AM fungi and the metabolic pathways of antioxidant enzymes, and the function of antioxidant genes regulated by mycorrhizal symbiosis with the purpose of revealing the mechanisms of mycorrhizal-induced plant tolerance to drought stress.

Abstract:Robinia pseudoacacia , a deciduous tree native to North America, has various medicinal properties, including antioxidant, antitumour, diuretic and antispasmodic effects. The plant contains various bioactive compounds, such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and phenols. However, caution is advised as all parts of the plant, except the flowers, are poisonous due to the phytotoxin robinin and its glycoside. The bark, on the other hand, shows resistance to rot due to the antifungal compounds dihydrorobinetin and robinetin. This study focuses on the stem bark of R. pseudoacacia from Bulgaria, a widely distributed wild species. Using advanced chromatographic techniques, we isolated and identified 3- O -caffeoyloleanolic acid, a new compound in the genus Robinia and R. pseudoacacia . Structural characterization was performed by state-of-the-art spectroscopic methods, including 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR and 2D NMR (COSY, HSQC, HMBC), as well as by LC-HRESI-MS analysis.

Abstract:Abstract Although it is well-documented that invasion of invasive plants is promoted with allelopathic effects by inhibiting the growth and phenotypic performance of native plants, little is known conversely. In this study, the allelopathy effects of a native plant, Humulus scandens (Lour.) Merr., on a typical invasive species Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb., was investigated by exposing A. philoxeroides seedlings to three chemical solvent extracts (i.e., petroleum ether extract (PE), ethyl acetate extract (EE), and n-butanol extract (NE) of H. scandens root (HR). The three chemical extracts inhibited the growth, stem length, node number, leaf number, leaf area, and root number, and increased malondialdehyde (MDA) content of A. philoxeroides seedlings, which indicated that the extracts inhibited the plant growth by damaging the membrane system of leaves. And the synthetical effect of allelopathy (SE) index indicated that EE had the greatest inhibition on the growth of A. philoxeroides . Fifty compounds were identified from the three extracts of HR using GC–MS analysis, among which 5 compounds (dibutyl phthalate, stigmasta-3,5-diene, 2,6-Di-tert-butylphenol campesterol, and neophytadiene) were identified from H. scandens root extracts for the first time. And n-hexadecanoic acid exists in all three extracts. The findings of the present study provide a novel method to potentially control the invasion of A. philoxeroides . However, field monitoring under natural conditions would be necessary to confirm in practice the results obtained with the bioassays.
