Abstract:Given a unit vector and , a translating -soliton is a surface in whose mean curvature H satisfies , where N is the Gauss map of the surface. In this paper, we extend the phenomenon of instability of Plateau–Rayleigh for translating -solitons of cylindrical type, proving that long pieces of these surfaces are unstable. Specifically, we will provide explicit bounds on the length of these unstable surfaces in terms of and the amplitude of the generating curve. It will be also proved that a graphical translating -soliton is a minimizer of the weighted area in a suitable class of surfaces with the same boundary and the same weighted volume.

Abstract:Ground states of a L2-subcritical focusing nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation are known to be orbitally stable in the energy class H1 thanks to its variational characterization. In this paper, we will show L2-orbital stability of 1-solitons to a one-dimensional cubic NLS equation for any initial data which are close to 1-solitons in L2. Moreover, we prove that if the initial data are in H3 in addition to being small in L2, then the solution remains in an L2-neighborhood of a specific 1-soliton solution for all the time. The proof relies on the Backlund transformation between zero and soliton solutions of this integrable equation.

Abstract:We analyze the spectral and dynamical stability of solitary wave solutions to the Lugiato–Lefever equation on . Our interest lies in solutions that arise through bifurcations from the phase-shifted bright soliton of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. These solutions are highly nonlinear, localized, far-from-equilibrium waves, and are the physical relevant solutions to model Kerr frequency combs. We show that bifurcating solitary waves are spectrally stable when the phase angle satisfies , while unstable waves are found for angles . Furthermore, we establish asymptotic orbital stability of spectrally stable solitary waves against localized perturbations. Our analysis exploits the Lyapunov–Schmidt reduction method, the instability index count developed for linear Hamiltonian systems, and resolvent estimates.

Abstract:It is known that there is no a Type I singularity for the Lagrangian mean curvature flow with zero Maslov class. In this paper, we study translating solitons which are important models of Type II singularities. A necessary condition for a blow-up limit arising at a Type II singularity of a Lagrangian mean curvature flow with zero Maslov class is provided. As an application, we prove that the Lagrangian translating solitons constructed by Joyce-Lee-Tsui \cite{JLT} cannot be a blow-up limit for a Lagrangian mean curvature flow with zero Maslov class, answering an open question proposed by Joyce-Lee-Tsui and Neves-Tian \cite{NT}, as well as we also prove that the Grim Reaper cannot be a blow-up limit for a Lagrangian mean curvature flow with zero Maslov class.

Stability of solitary wave solutions in the Lugiato-Lefever equation

Abstract:We analyze the spectral and dynamical stability of solitary wave solutions to the Lugiato-Lefever equation (LLE) on $\mathbb{R}$. Abstract:This paper is motivated by the stability problem of nonconstant periodic solutions of time‐periodic Lagrangian equations, like the swing and the elliptic Sitnikov problem. As a beginning step, we will study the linearized stability and instability of nonconstant periodic solutions that are bifurcated from those of autonomous Lagrangian equations. Applying the theory for Hill equations, we will establish a criterion for linearized stability. The criterion shows that the linearized stability depends on the temporal frequencies of the perturbed systems in a delicate way.

Abstract:We prove the orbital stability of soliton solutions for 2D Maxwell–Lorentz system with extended charged particle. The solitons corresponds to the uniform motion and rotation of the particle.We reduce the corresponding Hamilton system by the canonical transformation via transition to a comoving frame. The solitons are the critical points of the reduced Hamiltonian. The key point of the proof is a lower bound for the Hamiltonian.

Abstract:The theory of linear dispersive equations predicts that waves should spread out and disperse over time. However, it is a remarkable phenomenon, observed both in theory and practice, that once nonlinear effects are taken into account, solitary wave or soliton solutions can be created, which can be stable enough to persist indefinitely. The construction of such solutions can be relatively straightforward, but the fact that they are stable requires some significant amounts of analysis to establish, in part due to symmetries in the equation (such as translation invariance) which create degeneracy in the stability analysis. The theory is particularly difficult in the critical case in which the nonlinearity is at exactly the right power to potentially allow for a self-similar blowup. In this article we survey some of the highlights of this theory, from the more classical orbital stability analysis of Weinstein and Grillakis-Shatah-Strauss, to the more recent asymptotic stability and blowup analysis of Martel-Merle and Merle-Raphael, as well as current developments in using this theory to rigorously demonstrate controlled blowup for several key equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the orbital stability of the 1-soliton solution for the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation under perturbations in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$. We demonstrate this stability by utilizing the Bäcklund transformation associated with the Lax pair and by applying the first conservation quantity in $L^2(\mathbb{R}).$

Abstract:We consider the system of Maxwell equations and Lorentz torque equation which describes a motion of charge in electromagnetic field. Under certain symmetry conditions on charge distribution and on initial fields the charge remains at rest but rotates. The system admits stationary soliton-type solutions. We study the Lyapunov and the orbital stability of solitons exploiting the energy conservation law the angular momentum argument for the system. The bibliography: 20 refs.

Abstract:Dispersive PDEs are important both in applications (wave phenomena e.g. in hy- drodynamics, nonlinear optics, plasma physics, Bose-Einstein condensates,...) and a mathematically very challenging class of partial differential equations, especially in the time dependent case. An important point with respect to applications is the stability of exact solutions like solitons. Whereas the linear or spectral stability can be addressed analytically in some situations, the proof of full nonlinear (in-)stability remains mostly an open question. In this paper, we numerically investi- gate the transverse (in-)stability of the solitonic solution to the one-dimensional cubic NLS equation, the well known isolated soliton, under the time evolution of several higher dimensional models, being admissible as a tranverse perturbation of the 1d cubic NLS. One of the recent work in this context [42] allowed to prove the instability of the soliton, under the flow of the classical (elliptic) 2d cubic NLS equation, for both localized or periodic perturbations. The characteristics of this instability stay however unknown. Is there a blow-up, dispersion..? We first illustrate how this instability occurs for the elliptic 2d cubic NLS equation and then show that the elliptic-elliptic Davey Stewartson system (a (2+1)-dimensional generalization of the cubic NLS equation) behaves as the former in this context. Then we investigate hyperbolic variants of the above models, for which no theory in this context is available. Namely we consider the hyperbolic 2d cubic NLS equation and the Davey-Stewartson II equations. For localized perturbations, the isolated soliton appears to be unstable for the former case, but seems to be orbitally stable for the latter. For periodic perturbations the soliton is found to be unstable for all transversally perturbed models considered.

Abstract:This work focuses on the study of solitary wave solutions to a nonlocal, nonlinear Schr\"odinger system in $1$+$1$ dimensions with arbitrary nonlinearity parameter $\kappa$. Although the system we study here was first reported by Yang (Phys. Rev. E, 98 (2018), 042202) for the fully integrable case $\kappa=1$, we extend its considerations and offer criteria for soliton stability and instability as a function of $\kappa$. In particular, we show that for $\kappa <2$ the solutions are stable whereas for $\kappa >2$ they are subject to collapse or blowup. At the critical point of $\kappa=2$, there is a critical mass necessary for blowup or collapse. Furthermore, we show there is a simple one-component nonlocal Lagrangian governing the dynamics of the system which is amenable to a collective coordinate approximation. To that end, we introduce a trial wave function with two collective coordinates to study the small oscillations around the exact solution. We obtain analytical expressions for the small oscillation frequency for the width parameter in the collective coordinate approximation. We also discuss a four collective coordinate approximation which in turn breaks the symmetry of the exact solution by allowing for translational motion. The ensuing oscillations found in the latter case capture the response of the soliton to a small translation. Finally, our results are compared with numerical simulations of the system.

Abstract:In this paper, a class of (2+1)-dimensional nonlinear generalized Schrödinger equation is studied. The exact expressions of the traveling wave solution and the optical soliton solution of the model are obtained by mathematical method. For the special soliton solutions, we use ansatz method to obtain specific bright and dark soliton solutions and their existence constraints. The dynamic behaviors of all kinds of exact solutions are discussed by numerical simulation. In addition, MI analysis was used to evaluate the stability of the equations.

Abstract:In optical solitons, the propagation is usually governed by the nonlinear Schrödinger equations. In nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLSEs), the unstable NLSE is a universal equation of the class of nonlinear integrable systems, which describes the disturbances in time evolution of marginally stable or unstable media. The aim of this article is to study the unstable NLSE analytically. Several explicit new exact solutions such as soliton, solitary wave, elliptic function and periodic solutions of unstable NLSE are constructed by using proposed modified extended mapping method, which have important applications in applied science and engineering. The movement of obtained soliton solutions are presented graphically, which helps to understand the physical phenomenas of the unstable equation. The stability analysis of the constructed solutions and the movement role of waves are examined by employing modulation instability analysis. All solutions are stable and analytical.

Abstract:We consider the nonlinear focusing Klein-Gordon equation in $1 + 1$ dimensions and the global space-time dynamics of solutions near the unstable soliton. Our main result is a proof of optimal decay, and local decay, for even perturbations of the static soliton originating from well-prepared initial data belonging to a subset of the stable manifold constructed in Bates-Jones (Dynamics reported, 1989) and Kowalczyk-Martel-Muñoz (J. Eur. Math. Soc., 2021). Our results complement those of Kowalczyk-Martel-Muñoz (J. Eur. Math. Soc., 2021) and confirm numerical results of Bizon-Chmaj-Szpak (J. Math. Phys., 2011) when considering nonlinearities $u^p$ with $p \geq 4$. In particular, we provide new information both local and global in space about asymptotically stable perturbations of the soliton under localization assumptions on the data.

On codimension one stability of the soliton for the 1D focusing cubic Klein-Gordon equation

Abstract:We consider the codimension one asymptotic stability problem for the soliton of the focusing cubic Klein-Gordon equation on the line under even perturbations. The main obstruction to full asymptotic stability on the center-stable manifold is a small divisor in a quadratic source term of the perturbation equation. This singularity is due to the threshold resonance of the linearized operator and the absence of null structure in the nonlinearity. The threshold resonance of the linearized operator produces a one-dimensional space of slowly decaying Klein-Gordon waves, relative to local norms. In contrast, the closely related perturbation equation for the sine-Gordon kink does exhibit null structure, which makes the corresponding quadratic source term amenable to normal forms [76]. The main result of this work establishes decay estimates up to exponential time scales for small "codimension one type" perturbations of the soliton of the focusing cubic Klein-Gordon equation. The proof is based upon a super-symmetric approach to the study of modified scattering for 1D nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations with Pöschl-Teller potentials from [76], and an implementation of a version of an adapted functional framework introduced in [39].

Unstable dynamics of solitary traveling waves in a lattice with long-range interactions

Abstract:In this work we revisit the existence, stability and dynamics of unstable traveling solitary waves in the context of lattice dynamical systems. We consider a nonlinear lattice of an $\alpha$-Fermi-Pasta-Ulam type with the additional feature of all-to-all harmonic long-range interactions whose strength decays exponentially with distance. The competition between the nonlinear nearest-neighbor terms and the longer-range linear ones yields two parameter regimes where the dependence of the energy $H$ of the traveling waves on their velocity $c$ is non-monotonic and multivalued, respectively. We examine both cases, and identify the exact (up to a prescribed numerical tolerance) traveling waves. To investigate the stability of the obtained solutions, we compute their Floquet multipliers, thinking of the traveling wave problem as a periodic one modulo shifts. We show that in the general case when the relationship between $H$ and $c$ is not single-valued, the sufficient but not necessary criterion for stability change is $H'(s)=0$, where $s$ is the parameter along the energy-velocity curve. Perturbing the unstable solutions along the corresponding eigenvectors, we identify two different scenarios of the dynamics of their transition to stable branches. In the first one, the perturbed wave slows down after expelling a dispersive wave. The second scenario involves an increase in the velocity of the perturbed wave accompanied by the formation of a slower small-amplitude traveling solitary wave.
