Abstract:A signed version of Putnam homology for Smale spaces is introduced. Its definition, basic properties and associated Lefschetz theorem are outlined. In particular, zeta functions associated to an Axiom A diffeomorphism are compared.

Abstract:We investigate functorial properties of Putnam's homology theory for Smale spaces. Our analysis shows that the addition of a conjugacy condition is necessary to ensure functoriality. Several examples are discussed that elucidate the need for our additional hypotheses. Our second main result is a natural generalization of Putnam's Pullback Lemma from shifts of finite type to non-wandering Smale spaces.

Abstract:We consider Smale spaces, a particular class of hyperbolic topological dynamical systems, which include the basic sets for Smale's Axiom A systems. We present a homology theory for such systems which is based on the dimension group in the special case of shifts of finite type. This theory provides a Lefschetz formula relating trace data with the number of periodic points of the system.

Abstract:We want to discuss various applications of modular forms in topology. The starting point is elliptic genus and its generalizations. The main techniques are the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula, Kac-Moody Lie algebras, modular forms and theta-functions. Just as the representations theory of classical Lie groups has close connections with the Atiyah-Singer index formula as exposed in [A1], the representation theory of loop groups plays very important role in our study. One of the most important new features of loop group representations is the modular invariance of the Kac-Weyl character formula, which allows us to derive many interesting new results and to unify many important old results in topology. In this paper we will develope along this line. We hope that the other features of loop group representations, such as fusion rules and tensor category structure may also be applied to topology. See the discussions in §3. The contents of this paper is organized in the following way. In §1 we introduce elliptic genus by combining index theory and the representation theory of loop groups. The relation of the classical index theory with representation theory of classical Lie groups was discussed in [A1]. Here one finds that just replacing the classical Lie groups by their corresponding loop groups, we get the complete theory of elliptic genus, or more generally the index theory on loop space. Especially the Dirac operator and the Witten genus of loop space are derived more convincingly in this way. Then all of the other well-known properties of elliptic genus, such as functional equations, characterizations by rigidity and fibrations, can be easily obtained. Here we only pick some less well-known results to discuss, for example the expressions of the parameters in elliptic genera in terms of theta-functions. Different from the classical Lie group case, a new feature in our situation appears, the modular invariance which, by combining with index theory, is applied to obtain many new topological results. This is the content of §2. Most results in this section are special cases of more general results. For simplicity we only give the main ideas of the proofs. We make some geometric constructions in §3 to understand elliptic cohomology. The construction in §3.3 is motivated by the vertex operator algebra construction of the monstrous moonshine module. Abstract:In this short note, we compare the combinatorial sign assignment of Manolescu, Ozsvath, Szabo and Thurston for grid homology of knots and links in 3-sphere with the sign assignment coming from a coherent system of orientations on Whitney disks. Although these constructions produce different signs, a small modification of the convention in either of the two methods results in identical sign assignments, and thus identical chain complexes.

Abstract:In this note we describe basic geometric properties of p-harmonic forms and p-coclosed forms and use them to reprove vanishing theorems of Pansu and new injectivity theorems for the Lp -cohomology of simply connected, pinched negatively curved manifolds. We also provide a partial resolution of a conjecture of Gromov on the vanishing of Lp -cohomology on symmetric spaces.

Abstract:Taking the Levine-Tristram signature of the closure of a braid defines a map from the braid group to the integers. A formula of Gambaudo and Ghys provides an evaluation of the homomorphism defect of this map in terms of the Burau representation and the Meyer cocycle. In 2017 Cimasoni and Conway generalized this formula to the multivariable signature of the closure of coloured tangles. In the present paper, we extend even further their result by using a different 4-dimensional interpretation of the signature. We obtain an evaluation of the additivity defect in terms of the Maslov index and the isotropic functor $\mathscr{F}_\omega$. We also show that in the case of coloured braids this defect can be rewritten in terms of the Meyer cocycle and the coloured Gassner representation, making it a direct generalization of the formula of Gambaudo and Ghys.

Abstract:We study homological invariants of étale groupoids arising from Smale spaces, continuing on our previous work, but going beyond the stably disconnected case by incorporating resolutions in the space direction. We show that the homology groups defined by Putnam are isomorphic to the Crainic-Moerdijk groupoid homology with integer coefficients. We also show that the K-groups of C*-algebras of stable and unstable equivalence relations have finite rank. For unstably disconnected Smale spaces, we provide a cohomological spectral sequence whose second page is the (stable) homology groups, and converges to the K-groups of the unstable C*-algebra.

Abstract:We use Hodge theory to relate poles of the Archimedean zeta function Z_f of a holomorphic function f with several invariants of singularities. First, we prove that the largest nontrivial pole of Z_f is the negative of the minimal exponent of f, whose order is determined by the multiplicity of the corresponding root of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial b_f(s). This resolves in a strong sense a question of Mustaţă-Popa. On the other hand, we give an example of f where a root of b_f(s) is not a pole of Z_f, answering a question of Loeser from 1985 in the negative. In general, we determine poles of Z_f from the Hodge filtration on vanishing cycles, sharpening a result of Barlet. Finally, we obtain analytic descriptions of the V-filtration of Kashiwara and Malgrange, Hodge ideals, and higher multiplier ideals, addressing another question of Mustaţă-Popa. The proofs mainly rely on a positivity property of the polarization on the lowest piece of the Hodge filtration on a complex Hodge module in the sense of Sabbah-Schnell.

Signed Poset Polytopes

Abstract:Stanley introduced in 1986 the order polytope and the chain polytope for a given finite poset. These polytopes contain much information about the poset and have given rise to important examples in polyhedral geometry. In 1993, Reiner introduced signed posets as natural type-B analogues of posets. We define and study signed order and chain polytopes. Our results include convex-hull and halfspace descriptions, unimodular triangulations, Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials and their relations to signed permutation statistics, and a Gorenstein characterization of signed order and chain polytopes.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a knot in an integral homology 3-sphere $Y$, and $\Sigma$ the corresponding $n$-fold cyclic branched cover. Assuming that $\Sigma$ is a rational homology sphere (which is always the case when $n$ is a prime power), we give a formula for the Lefschetz number of the action that the covering translation induces on the reduced monopole homology of $\Sigma$. The proof relies on a careful analysis of the Seiberg--Witten equations on 3-orbifolds and of various $\eta$-invariants. We give several applications of our formula: (1) we calculate the Seiberg--Witten and Furuta--Ohta invariants for the mapping tori of all semi-free actions of $Z/n$ on integral homology 3-spheres; (2) we give a novel obstruction (in terms of the Jones polynomial) for the branched cover of a knot in $S^3$ being an $L$-space; (3) we give a new set of knot concordance invariants in terms of the monopole Lefschetz numbers of covering translations on the branched covers.
Diffuse radio emission in a REFLEX cluster

Abstract:Deep Very Large Array radio observations are presented for the REFLEX clusters RXCJ0437.1+0043 and RXCJ1314.4-2515. They are at similar distance and show similar X-ray luminosity, but they are quite different in X-ray structure. Indeed RXCJ0437.1+0043 is regular and relaxed, whereas RXCJ1314.4-2515 is characterized by substructure and possible merging processes. The radio images reveal no diffuse emission in RXCJ0437.1+0043, and a complex diffuse structure in RXCJ1314.4-2515. The diffuse source in the latter cluster consists of a central radio halo which extends to the West toward the cluster periphery and bends to the North to form a possible relic. Another extended source is detected in the eastern cluster peripheral region. Although there could be plausible optical identifications for this source, it might also be a relic candidate owing to its very steep spectrum. The present results confirm the tight link between diffuse cluster radio sources and cluster merger processes.

Abstract:We extend the axiomatization for detecting and quantifying sign changes of Meher and Murty to sequences of complex numbers. We further generalize this result when the sequence is comprised of the coefficients of an $L$-function. As immediate applications, we prove that there are sign changes in intervals within sequences of coefficients of GL(2) holomorphic cusp forms, GL(2) Maass forms, and GL(3) Maass forms. Building on previous works by the authors, we prove that there are sign changes in intervals within sequences of partial sums of coefficients of GL(2) holomorphic cusp forms and Maass forms.

An analytic approach to Lefschetz and Morse theory on stratified pseudomanifolds

Abstract:We develop an analytic framework for Lefschetz fixed point theory and Morse theory for Hilbert complexes on stratified pseudomanifolds. We develop formulas for both global and local Lefschetz numbers and Morse, Poincaré polynomials as (polynomial) supertraces over cohomology groups of Hilbert complexes, developing techniques for relating local and global quantities using heat kernel and Witten deformation based methods. We focus on the case where the metric is wedge and the Hilbert complex is associated to a Dirac-type operator and satisfies the Witt condition, constructing Lefschetz versions of Bismut-Cheeger $\mathcal{J}$ forms for local Lefschetz numbers of Dirac operators, with specialized formulas for twisted de Rham, Dolbeault and spin$^{\mathbb{C}}$ Dirac complexes as supertraces of geometric endomorphisms on cohomology groups of local Hilbert complexes. We construct geometric endomorphisms to define de Rham Lefschetz numbers for some self-maps for which the pullback does not induce a bounded operator on $L^2$ forms. A de Rham Witten instanton complex is constructed for Witt spaces with stratified Morse functions, proving Morse inequalities related to other results in the literature including Goresky and MacPherson's in intersection cohomology. We also prove a Lefschetz-Morse inequality for geometric endomorphisms on the instanton complex that is new even on smooth manifolds. We derive $L^2$ Lefschetz-Riemann-Roch formulas, which we compare and contrast with algebraic versions of Baum-Fulton-Quart. In the complex setting, we derive Lefschetz formulas for spin Dirac complexes and Hirzebruch $\chi_y$ genera which we relate to signature, self-dual and anti-self-dual Lefschetz numbers, studying their properties and applications including instanton counting. We compute these invariants in various examples with different features, comparing with versions in other cohomology theories.

Abstract:We look at the proofs of a fragment of Linear Logic as a whole: in fact, Linear Logic's coherent semantics interprets the proofs of a given formula $A$ as faces of an abstract simplicial complex, thus allowing us to see the set of the (interpretations of the) proofs of $A$ as a geometrical space, not just a set. This point of view has never been really investigated. For a ``webbed'' denotational semantics -- say the relational one --, it suffices to down-close the set of (the interpretations of the) proofs of $A$ in order to give rise to an abstract simplicial complex whose faces do correspond to proofs of $A$. Since this space comes triangulated by construction, a natural geometrical property to consider is its homology. However, we immediately stumble on a problem: if we want the homology to be invariant w.r.t. to some notion of type-isomorphism, we are naturally led to consider the homology functor acting, at the level of morphisms, on ``simplicial relations'' rather than simplicial maps as one does in topology. The task of defining the homology functor on this modified category can be achieved by considering a very simple monad, which is almost the same as the power-set monad; but, doing so, we end up considering not anymore the homology of the original space, but rather of its transformation under the action of the monad. Does this transformation keep the homology invariant ? Is this transformation meaningful from a geometrical or logical/computational point of view ?

Abstract:Signed graphs are studied since the middle of the last century. Recently, the notion of homomorphism of signed graphs has been introduced since this notion captures a number of well known conjectures which can be reformulated using the definitions of signed homomorphism. In this paper, we introduce and study the properties of some target graphs for signed homomorphism. Using these properties, we obtain upper bounds on the signed chromatic numbers of graphs with bounded acyclic chromatic number and of signed planar graphs with given girth.

Formal Poisson (co)homology of the Lefschetz singularity

Abstract:We compute the formal Poisson cohomology groups of a real Poisson structure $\pi$ on $\mathbb{C}^2$ associated to the Lefschetz singularity $(z_1, z_2)\mapsto z_1^2+z_2^2$. In particular we correct an erroneous computation in the literature. The definition of $\pi$ depends on a choice of volume form. Using the main result we formally classify all Poisson structure arising from different choices of volume forms.

Abstract:This is a paper in a series that studies smooth relative Lie algebra homologies and cohomologies based on the theory of formal manifolds and formal Lie groups. In two previous papers, we develop the basic theory of formal manifolds, including generalizations of vector-valued distributions and generalized functions on smooth manifolds to the setting of formal manifolds. In this paper, we establish Poincaré's lemma for de Rham complexes with coefficients in formal functions, formal generalized functions, compactly supported formal densities, or compactly supported formal distributions.

Abstract:Inspired by the notions of local equivalence in monopole and Heegaard Floer homology, we introduce a version of local equivalence that combines odd Khovanov homology with equivariant even Khovanov homology into an algebraic package called a local even-odd (LEO) triple. We get a homomorphism from the smooth concordance group $C$ to the resulting local equivalence group $C_{LEO}$ of such triples. We give several versions of the $s$-invariant that descend to $C_{LEO}$, including one that completely determines whether the image of a knot $K$ in $C_{LEO}$ is trivial. We discuss computer experiments illustrating the power of these invariants in obstructing sliceness, both statistically and for some interesting knots studied by Manolescu-Piccirillo. Along the way, we explore several variants of this local equivalence group, including one that is totally ordered.
