Abstract:We propose a definition of the category of hybrid systems in which executions are special types of morphisms. Consequently morphisms of hybrid systems send executions to executions. We plan to use this result to define and study networks of hybrid systems.

Abstract:We develop a compositional framework for formal synthesis of hybrid systems using the language of category theory. More specifically, we provide mutually compatible tools for hierarchical, sequential, and independent parallel composition. In our framework, hierarchies of hybrid systems correspond to template-anchor pairs, which we model as spans of subdividing and embedding semiconjugacies. Hierarchical composition of template-anchor pairs corresponds to the composition of spans via pullback. To model sequential composition, we introduce "directed hybrid systems," each of which flows from an initial subsystem to a final subsystem in a Conley-theoretic sense. Sequential composition of directed systems is given by a pushout of graph embeddings, rewriting the continuous dynamics of the overlapping subsystem to prioritize the second directed system. Independent parallel composition corresponds to a categorical product with respect to semiconjugacy. To formalize the compatibility of these three types of composition, we construct a vertically cartesian double category of hybrid systems where the vertical morphisms are semiconjugacies, and the horizontal morphisms are directed hybrid systems.

Abstract:This thesis (defended 10/07/2019) develops a theory of networks of hybrid open systems and morphisms. It builds upon a framework of networks of continuous-time open systems as product and interconnection. We work out categorical notions for hybrid systems, deterministic hybrid systems, hybrid open systems, networks of hybrid open systems, and morphisms of networks of hybrid open systems. We also develop categorical notions for abstract systems, abstract open systems, networks of abstract open systems, and morphisms of networks of abstract open systems. We show that a collection of relations holding among pairs of systems induces a relation between interconnected systems. We use this result for abstract systems to prove a corresponding result for networks of hybrid systems. This result translates as saying that our procedure for building networks preserves morphisms of open systems: a collection of morphisms of (sub)systems is sent to a morphism of networked systems. We thus both justify our formalism and concretize the intuition that a network is a collection of systems pieced together in a certain way.

Abstract:Hybrid systems with memory refer to dynamical systems exhibiting both hybrid and delay phenomena. While systems of this type are frequently encountered in many physical and engineering systems, particularly in control applications, various issues centered around the robustness of hybrid delay systems have not been adequately dealt with. In this paper, we establish some basic results on a framework that allows to study hybrid systems with memory through generalized concepts of solutions. In particular, we develop the basic existence of generalized solutions using regularity conditions on the hybrid data, which are formulated in a phase space of hybrid trajectories equipped with the graphical convergence topology. In contrast with the uniform convergence topology that has been often used, adopting the graphical convergence topology allows us to establish well-posedness of hybrid systems with memory. We then show that, as a consequence of well-posedness, pre-asymptotic stability of well-posed hybrid systems with memory is robust.

Abstract:We formalize the semantics of hybrid systems as sets of hybrid trajectories, including those generated by an hybrid transition system. We study the abstraction of hybrid trajectory semantics for verification, static analysis, and refinement. We mainly consider abstractions of hybrid semantics which establish a correspondence between trajectories derived from a correspondence between states such as homomorphisms, simulations, bisimulations, and preservations with progress. We also consider abstractions that cannot be defined stepwise like discretization. All these abstractions are Galois connections between concrete and abstract hybrid trajectory or discrete trace semantics. In contrast to semantic based abstractions, we investigate the problematic trace-based composition of abstractions.

On the integrability of hybrid Hamiltonian systems

Abstract:A hybrid system is a system whose dynamics are controlled by a mixture of both continuous and discrete transitions. The integrability of Hamiltonian systems is often identified with complete integrability or Liouville integrability, that is, the existence of as many independent integrals of motion in involution as the dimension of the phase space. Under certain regularity conditions, Liouville-Arnold theorem states that the invariant geometric structure associated with Liouville integrability is a fibration by Lagrangian tori, on which motions are linear. In this paper, we study an extension of the Liouville-Arnold theorem for hybrid systems whose continuous dynamics is given by a Hamiltonian vector field and we state conditions on the impact map and the switching surface under which a hybrid Hamiltonian system is, in a certain sense, completely integrable.

Double Categories of Open Dynamical Systems (Extended Abstract)

Abstract:A (closed) dynamical system is a notion of how things can be, together with a notion of how they may change given how they are. The idea and mathematics of closed dynamical systems has proven incredibly useful in those sciences that can isolate their object of study from its environment. But many changing situations in the world cannot be meaningfully isolated from their environment - a cell will die if it is removed from everything beyond its walls. To study systems that interact with their environment, and to design such systems in a modular way, we need a robust theory of open dynamical systems. In this extended abstract, we put forward a general definition of open dynamical system. We define two general sorts of morphisms between these systems: covariant morphisms which include trajectories, steady states, and periodic orbits; and contravariant morphisms which allow for plugging variables of some systems into parameters of other systems. We define an indexed double category of open dynamical systems indexed by their interface and use a double Grothendieck construction to construct a double category of open dynamical systems. In our main theorem, we construct covariantly representable indexed double functors from the indexed double category of dynamical systems to an indexed double category of spans. This shows that all covariantly representable structures of dynamical systems - including trajectories, steady states, and periodic orbits - compose according to the laws of matrix arithmetic.

Abstract:Herein we develop category-theoretic tools for understanding network-style diagrammatic languages. The archetypal network-style diagrammatic language is that of electric circuits; other examples include signal flow graphs, Markov processes, automata, Petri nets, chemical reaction networks, and so on. The key feature is that the language is comprised of a number of components with multiple (input/output) terminals, each possibly labelled with some type, that may then be connected together along these terminals to form a larger network. The components form hyperedges between labelled vertices, and so a diagram in this language forms a hypergraph. We formalise the compositional structure by introducing the notion of a hypergraph category. Network-style diagrammatic languages and their semantics thus form hypergraph categories, and semantic interpretation gives a hypergraph functor. The first part of this thesis develops the theory of hypergraph categories. In particular, we introduce the tools of decorated cospans and corelations. Decorated cospans allow straightforward construction of hypergraph categories from diagrammatic languages: the inputs, outputs, and their composition are modelled by the cospans, while the 'decorations' specify the components themselves. Not all hypergraph categories can be constructed, however, through decorated cospans. Decorated corelations are a more powerful version that permits construction of all hypergraph categories and hypergraph functors. These are often useful for constructing the semantic categories of diagrammatic languages and functors from diagrams to the semantics. To illustrate these principles, the second part of this thesis details applications to linear time-invariant dynamical systems and passive linear networks.

Relational Composition of Physical Systems: A Categorical Approach

Abstract:In this master's thesis, we rigorously develop two frameworks of relational composition of systems using tools from category theory. The first framework addresses port-Hamiltonian systems, which are dynamical systems whose dynamics are connected to flows of energy across a boundary. The second framework addresses thermostatic systems, which are descriptions of equilibria in physical systems using entropy. We also review necessary subjects to develop these frameworks from a category-theoretic viewpoint, including inear algebra, differential geometry, and convex geometry.

On categorical approach to reaction systems

Abstract:In every matured theory, there is a need to investigate possible relationships between considered objects. To address this issue, it is natural to relate a category with given model of computing. Thanks to such approach, many properties are unified and simplified. In this paper, we investigate how category theory can be used to give a faithful semantics for reaction systems. In particular, we propose and discuss possible approaches to the problem of defining morphisms between reaction systems. We provide the definition of morphism that keeps the behaviour of the original reaction system. Especially, some equivalences of reaction systems are reflected in terms of morphisms. For this purpose we expressed isomorphisms and sections in term of transition systems. Moreover, the accelerating morphism defined in the last section gives a new approach for including time in reaction systems.

Abstract:Combining higher-order abstract syntax and (co)induction in a logical framework is well known to be problematic. Previous work described the implementation of a tool called Hybrid, within Isabelle HOL, which aims to address many of these difficulties. It allows object logics to be represented using higher-order abstract syntax, and reasoned about using tactical theorem proving and principles of (co)induction. In this paper we describe how to use it in a multi-level reasoning fashion, similar in spirit to other meta-logics such as Twelf. By explicitly referencing provability in a middle layer called a specification logic, we solve the problem of reasoning by (co)induction in the presence of non-stratifiable hypothetical judgments, which allow very elegant and succinct specifications of object logic inference rules.

Abstract:Based on Koopman formalism for classical statistical mechanics, we propose a formalism to define hybrid quantum-classical dynamical systems by defining (outer) automorphisms of the C*-algebra of hybrid operators and realizing them as linear transformations on the space of hybrid states. These hybrid states are represented as density matrices on the Hilbert space obtained from the hybrid C*-algebra by the GNS formalism. We also classify all possible dynamical systems which are unitary and obtain the possible hybrid Hamiltonian operators.

On Categories of Nested Conditions

Abstract:Nested conditions are used, among other things, as a graphical way to express first order formulas ruling the applicability of a graph transformation rule to a given match. In this paper, we propose (for the first time) a notion of structural morphism among nested conditions, consistent with the entailment of the corresponding formulas. This reveals a structural weakness of the existing definition of nested conditions, which we overcome by proposing a new notion of span-based nested conditions, embedding the original ones. We also introduce morphisms for the latter, showing that those form a richer structure by organising the various models in a number of categories suitably related by functors.

A Categorical Semantics for Hierarchical Petri Nets

Abstract:We show how a particular variety of hierarchical nets, where the firing of a transition in the parent net must correspond to an execution in some child net, can be modelled utilizing a functorial semantics from a free category -- representing the parent net -- to the category of sets and spans between them. This semantics can be internalized via Grothendieck construction, resulting in the category of executions of a Petri net representing the semantics of the overall hierarchical net. We conclude the paper by giving an engineering-oriented overview of how our model of hierarchical nets can be implemented in a transaction-based smart contract environment.

Functorial Approach to Graph and Hypergraph Theory

Abstract:We provide a new approach to categorical graph and hypergraph theory by using categorical syntax and semantics. For each monoid $M$ and action on a set $X$, there is an associated presheaf topos of $(X,M)$-graphs where each object can be interpreted as a generalized uniform hypergraph where each edge has cardinality $\#X$ incident vertices (including multiplicity) and where the monoid informs what type of cohesivity the edges possess. One distinguishing feature of $(X,M)$-graphs is the presence of unfixed edges. We prove that unfixed edges are a necessary feature of a category of graphs or uniform hypergraphs if one wants exponentials and effective equivalence relations to exist in the category. The main advantage of separating syntax (the $(X,M)$-graph theories) from semantics (the categories of $(X,M)$-graphs) is the ability to interpret the theory in any cocomplete category. This interpetation functor then yields a nerve-realization adjunction and allows us to transfer structure between the category of $(X,M)$-graphs and the receptive cocomplete category.

Abstract:In this work we provide a categorical formalization of several constructions found in transformational music theory. We first revisit David Lewin's original theoretical construction of Generalized Interval Systems (GIS) to show that it implicitly defines categories. When all the conditions in Lewin's definition are fullfilled, such categories coincide with the category of elements $\int_\mathbf{G} S$ for the group action $S \colon \mathbf{G} \to \mathbf{Sets}$ implied by the GIS structure. By focusing on the role played by categories of elements in such a context, we reformulate previous definitions of transformational networks in a $\mathbf{Cat}$-based diagrammatical perspective, and present a new definition of transformational networks (called CT-Nets) in general musical categories. We show incidently how such an approach provides a bridge between algebraic, geometrical and graph-theoretical approaches in transformational music analysis. We end with a discussion on the new perspectives opened by such a formalization of transformational theory, in particular with respect to $\mathbf{Rel}$-based transformational networks which occur in well-known music-theoretical constructions such as Douthett's and Steinbach's Cube Dance.

Abstract:We present a hybrid dynamical type theory equipped with useful primitives for organizing and proving safety of navigational control algorithms. This type theory combines the framework of Fu--Kishida--Selinger for constructing linear dependent type theories from state-parameter fibrations with previous work on categories of hybrid systems under sequential composition. We also define a conjectural embedding of a fragment of linear-time temporal logic within our type theory, with the goal of obtaining interoperability with existing state-of-the-art tools for automatic controller synthesis from formal task specifications. As a case study, we use the type theory to organize and prove safety properties for an obstacle-avoiding navigation algorithm of Arslan--Koditschek as implemented by Vasilopoulos. Finally, we speculate on extensions of the type theory to deal with conjugacies between model and physical spaces, as well as hierarchical template-anchor relationships.
Contract-Based Design for Hybrid Dynamical Systems and Invariance Properties

Abstract:This work establishes fundamental principles for verifying contract for interconnected hybrid systems. When system's hybrid arcs conform to the contract for a certain duration but subsequently violate it, the composition of hybrid dynamical systems becomes challenging. The objective of this work is to analyze the temporal satisfaction of the contract, allowing us to reason about the compositions that do not violate the contract up to a certain point in a hybrid time. Notions of weak and strong satisfaction of an assume-guarantee contract are introduced. These semantics permits the compositional reasoning on hybrid systems of varying complexity depending on the interconnection's type, feedback or cascade. The results show that both semantics are compatible with cascade composition, while strong semantic is required for feedback composition. Moreover, we have shown how one can go from weak to strong contract satisfaction. Finally, we have studied a particular class of hybrid systems and we have shown that the concept of forward (pre-)invariant relative to a contract makes it possible to deal with feedback compositions. These results are demonstrated throughout the paper with simple numerical examples.

Abstract:We give insight in the structure of port-Hamiltonian systems as control systems in between two closed Hamiltonian systems. Using the language of category theory, we identify systems with their behavioural representation and view a port-control structure with desired structural properties on a given closed system as an extension of this system which itself may be embedded in a "larger" closed system. The latter system describes the nature of the ports (e.g. Hamiltonian, metriplectic etc.). This point of view allows us to describe meaningful port-control structures for a large family of systems, which is illustrated with Hamiltonian and metriplectic systems.

Abstract:The dynamics by iteration of a function on a compact metric space, sometimes called a cascade, can be extended to the dynamics of a closed relation on such a space. Here we apply this relation dynamics to study semiflows (and their relation extension) as well as hybrid dynamical systems which combine both continuous time and discrete time dynamics. In a unified way we describe the attractor-repeller structure, Conley's chain recurrence relation and the construction of Lyapunov functions for all of these systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we formalize precisely the sense in which the application of a cellular automaton to partial configurations is a natural extension of its local transition function through the categorical notion of Kan extension. In fact, the two possible ways to do such an extension and the ingredients involved in their definition are related through Kan extensions in many ways. These relations provide additional links between computer science and category theory, and also give a new point of view on the famous Curtis–Hedlund theorem of cellular automata from the extended topological point of view provided by category theory. These links also allow to relatively easily generalize concepts pioneered by cellular automata to arbitrary kinds of possibly evolving spaces. No prior knowledge of category theory is assumed for the most part.
