Abstract:Suppose $\{f_t\}$ is an analytic one-parameter family of rational maps defined over a non-Archimedean field $K$. We prove a finiteness theorem for the set of rescalings for $\{f_t\}$. This complements results of J. Kiwi.

Abstract:We discuss rescaling limits for sequences of complex rational maps in one variable which approach infinity in parameter space. It is shown that any given sequence of maps of degree d ≥ 2 has at most 2 d − 2 dynamically distinct rescaling limits which are not postcritically finite. For quadratic rational maps, a complete description of the possible rescaling limits is given. These results are obtained by employing tools from nonarchimedean dynamics.

Abstract:We study sequences of analytic conjugacy classes of rational maps which diverge in moduli space. In particular, we are interested in the notion of rescaling limits introduced by Jan Kiwi. In the continuity of [A1] we recall the notion of dynamical covers between trees of spheres for which a periodic sphere corresponds to a rescaling limit. We study necessary conditions for such a dynamical cover to be the limit of dynamically marked rational maps. With these conditions we classify them for the case of bicritical maps and we recover the second main result of Jan Kiwi regarding rescaling limits.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of dynamically marked rational maps. We study sequences of analytic conjugacy classes of rational maps which diverge in moduli space. In particular, we are interested in the notion of rescaling limits introduced by Jan Kiwi. Abstract:We develop non-Archimedean techniques to analyze the degeneration of a sequence of rational maps of the complex projective line. We provide an alternative to Luo's method which was based on ultra-limits of the hyperbolic 3-space. We build hybrid spaces using Berkovich theory which enable us to prove the convergence of equilibrium measures, and to determine the asymptotics of Lyapunov exponents.

Abstract:Let K be an algebraically closed field which is complete with respect to a non-trivial non-Archimedean absolute value |⋅|. We study metric properties of the limit set Λ of a semigroup G generated by a finite set of contractive analytic functions on O={z∈K||z|⩽1}. We prove that the limit set Λ of G is uniformly perfect if the derivative of each generating function of G does not vanish on O. Furthermore, we show that if each coefficient of the generating functions is in the field Qp of p-adic numbers, or the limit set Λ satisfies the strong open set condition, then Λ has the doubling property. This yields that the limit set Λ is quasisymmetrically equivalent to the space Z2 of 2-adic integers. We also give a counterexample to show that not all limit sets have the doubling property. The Berkovich space is introduced to study the limit set Λ, and we prove that the limit set Λ has a positive capacity in the Berkovich space which yields that there exists an equilibrium measure μ whose support is contained in the limit set Λ. We also show that if the semigroup is generated by a countable set of contractive analytic functions, then its limit set Λ can be non-compact. However, if coefficients of the generating functions lie in Qp, then the limit set Λ is compact.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{O}_{K}$ be the ring of integers of an imaginary quadratic field $K$. Recently, Ji and Xie proved that every rational map $f \colon \widehat{\mathbb{C}} \rightarrow \widehat{\mathbb{C}}$ of degree $d \geq 2$ whose multipliers all lie in $\mathcal{O}_{K}$ is a power map, a Chebyshev map or a Lattès map. Their proof relies on a result from non-Archimedean dynamics obtained by Rivera-Letelier. In the present note, we show that one can avoid using this result by considering a differential equation instead. Our proof of Ji and Xie's result also applies to the case of entire maps. Thus, we also show that every nonaffine entire map $f \colon \mathbb{C} \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ whose multipliers all lie in $\mathcal{O}_{K}$ is a power map or a Chebyshev map.

The intrinsic reductions and the intrinsic depths in non-archimedean dynamics

Abstract:For a rational function $\phi$ on $\mathbb{P}^1$ defined over an algebraically closed and complete non-archimedean non-trivially valued field $K$, we introduce the intrinsic reduction at each point in the Berkovich projective line and the directionwise intrinsic depth of it. After discussing the relationship between such an intrinsic reduction of $\phi$ and the classical reduction of $\phi$ modulo $K^{\circ\circ}$, we give as applications an intrinsic proof of Rumely's moduli theoretic characterization of the minimum resultant locus and a direct proof of the degenerating limit theorem of DeMarco--Faber for a meromorphic family of complex rational functions.

Abstract:We consider the asymptotic behavior of the KPZ fixed point $\{\mathsf H(x,t)\}_{x\in\mathbb R, t>0}$ conditioned on $\mathsf H(0,T)=L$ as $L$ goes to infinity. The main result is a conditional limit theorem for the fluctuations of $\mathsf H$ in the region near the line segment connecting the origin $(0,0)$ and $(0,T)$ for both step and flat initial conditions. The limit random field can be represented as a functional of two independent Brownian bridges, and in addition the limit random field depends also on the initial law of the KPZ fixed point. In particular for temporal fluctuations, the limit process indexed by line segment between $(0,0)$ and $(0,T)$, when the KPZ is with step initial condition, has the law of the minimum of two independent Brownian bridges; and when the KPZ is with flat initial condition the limit process has the law of the minimum of two independent Brownian bridges, each in addition perturbed by a common Gaussian random variable. For spatial-temporal fluctuations, the conditional limit theorem sheds light on the asymptotic behaviors of the point-to-point geodesic of the directed landscape conditioned on its length and as the length tends to infinity.

Abstract:Let $${\phi}$$ be a rational function of degree at least two defined over a number field k. Let $${a \in \mathbb{P}^1(k)}$$ and let K be a number field containing k. We study the cardinality of the set of rational iterated preimages Preim$${(\phi, a, K) = \{x_{0} \in \mathbb{P}^1(K) | \phi^{N} (x_0) = a {\rm for some} N \geq 1\}}$$. We prove two new results (Theorems 2 and 4) bounding $${|{\rm Preim}(\phi, a, K)|}$$ as $${\phi}$$ varies in certain families of rational functions. Our proofs are based on unit equations and a method of Runge for effectively determining integral points on certain affine curves. We also formulate and state a uniform boundedness conjecture for Preim$${(\phi, a, K)}$$ and prove that a version of this conjecture is implied by other well-known conjectures in arithmetic dynamics.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a unipotent group and $\mathcal F=\{F_t:t\in (0,\infty)\}$ a family of subsets of $G$, with $\mathcal F$ definable in an o-minimal expansion of the real field. Given a lattice $\Gamma\subseteq G$, we study the possible Hausdorff limits of $\pi(\mathcal F)$ in $G/\Gamma$ as $t$ tends to $\infty$ (here $\pi:G\to G/\Gamma$ is the canonical projection). Towards a solution, we associate to $\mathcal F$ finitely many real algebraic subgroups $L\subseteq G$, and, uniformly in $\Gamma$, determine if the only Hausdorff limit at $\infty$ is $G/\Gamma$, depending on whether $L^\Gamma=G$ or not. The special case of polynomial dilations of a definable set is treated in details.

A dynamical system over a non-archimedean field

Abstract:This is an expository article, originally written in Japanese, on a dynamical system over a non-archimedean field. The main viewpoint is from complex and non-archimedean potential theories. After quickly introducing the Berkovich projective line, the dynamical moduli space as a scheme, and the various height functions on the space of rational functions and on the dynamical moduli space, we first survey our study of Rumely's new equivariants in non-archimedean dynamics and then survey our complex geometric and arithmetic studies of the dynamical moduli space from our joint works with Thomas Gauthier and Gabriel Vigny. The latter include a precise version of McMullen's finiteness theorem on formally exact multiplier spectra and an effective solution of Silverman's conjecture on a comparison between the moduli height and the critical height (qualitatively, the Silverman-Ingram theorem). The final topic is a degeneration of complex dynamics.

Abstract:Let $k$ be a discretely valued non-Archimedean field. We give an explicit description of analytic functions whose norm is bounded by a given real number $r$ on tubes of reduced $k$-analytic spaces associated to special formal schemes (those include $k$-affinoid spaces as well as open polydiscs). As an application we study the connectedness of these tubes. This generalizes (in the discretely valued case) a result of Siegfried Bosch. We use as a main tool a result of A.J. de Jong relating formal and analytic functions on special formal schemes and a generalization of de Jong's result which is proved in the joint appendix with Christian Kappen.

We show that in a rather general case, the corresponding asymptotic Fubini-Study operator yields a one-to-one correspondence between equivalence classes of bounded graded norms and bounded plurisubharmonic metrics that are regularizable from below. This generalizes results of Boucksom-Jonsson where this problem has been studied in the trivially valued case.

Abstract:In this paper we consider random dynamical systems formed by concatenating maps acting on the unit interval $[0,1]$ in an iid fashion. Considered as a stationary Markov process, the random dynamical system possesses a unique stationary measure $\nu$. We consider a class of non square-integrable observables $\phi$, mostly of form $\phi(x)=d(x,x_0)^{-\frac{1}{\alpha}}$ where $x_0$ is non-periodic point satisfying some other genericity conditions, and more generally regularly varying observables with index $\alpha \in (0,2)$. The two types of maps we concatenate are a class of piecewise $C^2$ expanding maps, and a class of intermittent maps possessing an indifferent fixed point at the origin. Under conditions on the dynamics and $\alpha$ we establish Poisson limit laws, convergence of scaled Birkhoff sums to a stable limit law and functional stable limit laws, in both the annealed and quenched case. The scaling constants for the limit laws for almost every quenched realization are the same as those of the annealed case and determined by $\nu$. This is in contrast to the scalings in quenched central limit theorems where the centering constants depend in a critical way upon the realization and are not the same for almost every realization.

Abstract:We study the behaviour of the standard map critical function in a neighbourhood of a fixed resonance, that is the scaling law at the fixed resonance. We prove that for the fundamental resonance the scaling law is linear. We show numerical evidence that for the other resonances p/q, q⩾2, p≠0 and p and q relatively prime, the scaling law follows a power-law with exponent 1/q.
