Abstract:[Objective] To estimate the population size of men who have sex with men (MSM) in Shanghai,provide scientific basis for developing HIV/AIDS control and prevention strategies and allocating the health resources.[Methods] Ten activity places of MSM were surveyed from July to October in 2014,and the population size of MSM was estimated by the capture-recapture method in Shanghai.[Results] A total of 915 MSM were captured in the first investigation and 956 MSM were recaptured in the second investigation,while 69 MSM were ever marked.The estimated size of MSM population is 12 495,with 95％CI of 10 077-14 913.It was estimated that there were 400 000 MSM by qualitative interviews,ranging from 20 000 to 800 000.[Conclusion] The estimated population size of MSM in Shanghai is bigger than other homogeneous cities.Capture-recapture method is rapid,economic and simple,and it can get more accurate population size of floating MSM.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk of HIV infection. For developing proper interventions, it is important to know the size of MSM population. However, size estimation of MSM populations is still a significant public health challenge due to high cost, hard to reach and stigma associated with the population.OBJECTIVES: We aimed to estimate the social network size (c value) in general population and the size of MSM population in Shanghai, China by using the net work scale-up method.METHODS: A multistage random sampling was used to recruit participants aged from 18 to 60 years who had lived in Shanghai for at least 6 months. The "known population method" with adjustment of backward estimation and regression model was applied to estimate the c value. And the MSM population size was further estimated using an adjusted c value taking into account for the transmission effect through social respect level towards MSM.RESULTS: A total of 4017 participants were contacted for an interview, and 3907 participants met the inclusion criterion. The social network size (c value) of participants was 236 after adjustment. The estimated size of MSM was 36354 (95% CI: 28489-44219) for the male Shanghaies aged 18 to 60 years, and the proportion of MSM among the total male population aged 18 to 60 years in Shanghai was 0.28%.CONCLUSIONS: We employed the network scale-up method and used a wide range of data sources to estimate the size of MSM population in Shanghai, which is useful for HIV prevention and intervention among the target population.

Abstract:The quaternization reaction between 2-amino-1-methylbenzimidazole and iodomethane was investigated in the gas phase and in liquid acetonitrile. Both experimental and theoretical techniques were used in this study. In the experimental part of this work, accurate second-order rate constants were obtained for this reaction in acetonitrile from conductivity data in the 293-323 K temperature range and at ambient pressure. From two different empirical equations describing the effect of temperature on reaction rates, thermodynamic functions of activation were calculated. In the theoretical part of this work, the mechanism of this reaction was investigated in the gas phase and in acetonitrile. Two different quantum levels (B3LYP/[6-311++G(3df,3pd)/LanL2DZ]//B3LYP/[6-31G(d)/LanL2DZ] and B3LYP/[6-311++G(3df,3pd)/LanL2DZ]//B3LYP/[6-31+G(d)/LanL2DZ]) were used in the calculations, and the acetonitrile environment was modeled using the polarized continuum model (PCM). In addition, an atoms in molecules (AIM) analysis was made aiming to characterize possible hydrogen bonding. The results obtained by both techniques are in excellent agreement and lead to new insight into the mechanism of the reaction under examination. These include the identification and thermodynamic characterization of the relevant stationary species, the rationalization of the mechanistic role played by the solvent and the amine group adjacent to the nucleophile nitrogen atom, the proposal of alternative paths on the modeled potential energy surfaces, and the origin of the marked non-Arrhenius behavior of the kinetic data in solvent acetonitrile. In particular, the AIM analysis confirmed the operation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds between reactants and between products, both in the gas phase and in solution. It is also concluded that the unusual solvent effect on this Menshutkin reaction stems from the conjunction of a nucleophile possessing a relatively complex chemical structure with a dipolar aprotic solvent that is protophobic.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To study the practical survey method on estimating the size of male homosexual population. METHODS Nine male homosexual gathering spots were selected and three methods as division method, capture-mark-recapture method and multiplier method were applied in counting the numbers of homosexual men in one city in Sichuan province. RESULTS Number of counting through division method was 877 and the three numbers through capture-mark-recapture method were 1408, 1207 and 949 respectively. However, appropriate data was not obtained by multiplier method. CONCLUSIONS Division method was easy to operate with its high credibility, but costly. Capture-mark-recapture method was less costly less both in capital and time, and the results could be testified to each other. Multiplier method should be modified before applied to obtain reliable information.

Spatiotemporal Analysis of Men Who Have Sex With Men in Mainland China: Social App Capture-Recapture Method

Abstract:Background: In China, the cases of newly diagnosed HIV/AIDS in men who have sex with men (MSM) have increased more than tenfold since 2006. However, the MSM population size, geographical distribution, and migration patterns are largely unknown. Objective: Our aim is to estimate the number, spatial distribution, and migration of MSM populations in mainland China using big data from social networking. Methods: We collected 85 days of data on online users of a social networking MSM app in mainland China. Daily online MSM users and their migration across the country were investigated during a holiday period and a nonholiday period. Using the capture-mark-recapture model, we designed an experiment consisting of two independent samples to estimate the total provincial MSM population. Results: The estimate of MSM in mainland China was 8,288,536 (95% CI 8,274,931-8,302,141), accounting for 1.732% (95% CI 1.729%-1.734%) of adult men aged 18 to 64 years. The average daily number of MSM social networking online across mainland China was 1,198,682 during the nonholiday period. The five provinces (including municipalities) with the highest average number of daily online MSM numbers were Guangdong (n=141,712), Jiangsu (n=90,710), Zhejiang (n=72,212), Shandong (n=68,065), and Beijing (n=66,057). The proportion of daily online MSM among adult men in different cities varied from 0.04% to 0.96%, with a mean of 0.20% (SD 0.14%). Three migrating centers-Guangdong, Beijing, and the Yangtze River Delta (Shanghai-Zhejiang-Jiangsu)-accounted for 57.23% of MSM migrants in the county. Conclusions: The percentage of MSM among adult men in mainland China is at the middle level compared with other Asia and Pacific countries. However, the number of MSM is very large, and the distribution is uneven. Both MSM distribution and migration are highly affected by socioeconomic status.

Abstract:The homosexual population is particularly susceptible to sexually transmitted disease because of various high-risk sexual behaviors among them. The authors explored the application of capture-recapture methods in estimating the size of the sexually active homosexual male population in Hangzhou. Homosexual men at 9 activity sites were investigated in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. The total active homosexual male population of Hangzhou estimated by the capture-recapture method and multiplier method was 2014 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1899-2129) and 2012.5 (95% CI 1925 to 2101), respectively. This study shows that the capture-recapture method can be used to enumerate and provide accurate and reliable estimates of the active homosexual population in any area, provided that certain conditions are controlled.

Abstract:Background: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk for HIV infection. Accurate estimation of the population size and monitoring the risk sexual behavioral change of MSM is of great importance to develop targeted HIV prevention and interventions. Objective: The goal of the research was accurate estimation of the population size and monitoring the risk sexual behavioral change of MSM. Results: In this study, we surveyed 10,170 participants in 2014, of whom 448 (4.41%, 95% CI 4.01%-4.80%) participants were men who have ever had sex with another man (MSMe) and 229 (2.25%, 95% CI 1.96%-2.54%) were men who had sex with another man in the previous 6 months (MSMa). A total of 10,226 participants were surveyed in 2019, of which 500 (4.90%, 95% CI 4.47%-5.31%) and 208 (2.03%, 95% CI 1.76%-2.31%) participants were MSMe and MSMa, respectively. The results showed that the population size of MSM who are active (MSMa) in Shenzhen was 155,469 (2.29%, 95% CI 2.28%-2.30%) in 2014 and 167,337 (2.05%, 95% CI 2.04%-2.06%) in 2019. It was estimated that there were about 12,005,445 (2.04%, 95% CI 2.04%-2.04%) MSMa in China in 2019. Compared with 2014, the MSMa in 2019 were more likely to seek sex partners through mobile phone apps and less likely to have male and female sex partners in addition to having inconsistent condom use and more than 6 sex partners in the previous 6 months. Conclusions: In Shenzhen, the proportion of MSMa among the general male population was lower in 2019 than in 2014, and the prevalence of HIV risk behavior was reduced in 2019. Although the preferred platform to find male sex partners among MSM has changed, intervention with high-HIV risk MSM could still help to reduce HIV risk behaviors among the whole MSM group. Because MSM prefer to seek sex partners through mobile phone apps, further study is needed to strengthen internet interventions with high-HIV risk MSM to curb the spread of HIV.
Estimating Self-Reported Sex Practices, Drug Use, Depression, and Intimate Partner Violence among MSM in China: a Comparison of Three Recruitment Methods.

Abstract:Men who have sex with men (MSM) are the group at highest risk for HIV in China. Researchers have used various recruitment methods to reach this population hidden from the hetero-normative culture. To inform future recruitment strategies, we compared estimates of socio-demographic characteristics, HIV risk behaviors, depression, and intimate partner violence (IPV) across three samples of MSM and money boys in Shanghai, China. Data were collected from three community-based samples of MSM and money boys (n = 1352) recruited via respondent-driven sampling (RDS) (n = 404), community popular opinion leaders (CPOL) (n = 385), and Internet and venue-based sampling (VBS) (n = 546). Different recruitment methods generated samples with statistically significant differences among a number of socio-demographic characteristics, sexual behaviors, drug use, depression scores, and exposure to IPV. Specifically, RDS participants had lower education (p=.002), income levels (p<.001), and were more likely to report condomless sex with a woman (p<.001). CPOL participants were younger (p<.001), more likely to report lifetime condomless anal sex (p=.009), more than 10 male partners in the past 30 days (p<.001), and were less likely to experience violence by a male intimate partner (p=.001). VBS participants had lowest depression score (p=.005) and were more likely to report lifetime drug use (p=.003). Our findings reinforce that each recruitment method may reach a sub-group of MSM with a specific risk profile, so multiple methods may be needed to obtain a representative sample of MSM. Interventions may use specific recruitment methods to target certain segments of the MSM population.

Abstract:Objectives To examine the prevalence of HIV and risk behaviours among men who have sex with men (MSM) and to explore the feasibility of using respondent-driven sampling in this population in order to conduct customised interventions among MSM in the future. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Zhejiang, China. Participants 1316 MSM. Primary and secondary outcome measures HIV prevalence rates and factors associated with HIV infection; sociodemographic and behavioural information of participants, syphilis prevalence rates. Results The adjusted prevalence of HIV and syphilis were 13.8% and 11.4%, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that higher educational level, support treatment of HIV, negative syphilis are protective factors of HIV infection. MSM who had heterosexual behaviour before and whose primary sexual partner was HIV-positive were less likely to be infected with HIV compared with their counterparts, while frequency of sexual behaviour with primary sexual partner was positively associated with HIV infection. Conclusions This survey confirmed a high HIV prevalence among MSM in Zhejiang province. MSM are extremely vulnerable to HIV infection and comprehensive interventions are urgently needed to slow the spread of HIV among MSM.
A comparison of four sampling methods among men having sex with men in China: implications for HIV/STD surveillance and prevention

Abstract:Sample representativeness remains one of the challenges in effective HIV/STD surveillance and prevention targeting men who have sex with men (MSM) worldwide. Although convenience samples are widely used in studies of MSM, previous studies suggested that these samples might not be representative of the broader MSM population. This issue becomes even more critical in many developing countries where needed resources for conducting probability sampling are limited. We examined variations in HIV and Syphilis infections and sociodemographic and behavioral factors among 307 young migrant MSM recruited using four different convenience sampling methods (peer outreach, informal social network, Internet, and venue-based) in Beijing, China in 2009. The participants completed a self-administered survey and provided blood specimens for HIV/STD testing. Among the four MSM samples using different recruitment methods, rates of HIV infections were 5.1%, 5.8%, 7.8%, and 3.4%; rates of Syphilis infection were 21.8%, 36.2%, 11.8%, and 13.8%; and rates of inconsistent condom use were 57%, 52%, 58%, and 38%. Significant differences were found in various sociodemographic characteristics (e.g., age, migration history, education, income, and places of employment) and risk behaviors (e.g., age at first sex, number of sex partners, involvement in commercial sex, and substance use) among samples recruited by different sampling methods. The results confirmed the challenges of obtaining representative MSM samples and underscored the importance of using multiple sampling methods to reach MSM from diverse backgrounds and in different social segments and to improve the representativeness of the MSM samples when the use of probability sampling approach is not feasible.
The characterisation of sexual behaviour in Chinese male university students who have sex with other men: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background The risks for Chinese male university students who have sex with other men (MSM) have not been compared with those for non-MSM students. This information is important for the development of targeted HIV prevention programmes for this population. Methods Sexually active MSM and non-MSM students were compared for demographic characteristics, sexual behaviour, and related psychosocial variables using bivariate analyses. The data were a subset drawn from a large-scale cross-sectional questionnaire survey of sexually active male students conducted at two universities in a large city in Zhejiang Province, China, in 2003. Results Of 1824 sexually active male students, 68 (3.7%) reported having had sex with a man at least once; 33.8% of these 68 men had also had female partners. Compared with non-MSM students, MSM students were 3–6.5 times more likely to have had sexual encounters with casual or commercial sex partners and were three times less likely to have protected sex in the past year or during their lifetime. They were three to five times more likely to have had multiple partners and 15 times more likely to have had a sexually transmitted disease (STD). In addition, the MSM students knew half as much about HIV and had less condom-decision than did non-MSM students and were two times more accepting of commercial sex. However, the MSM students were twice as aware of the risks for HIV infection. Conclusion MSM composed 3–4% of the male sexually active university student population studied and was found to be at greater risk than non-MSM students for STD/HIV infection. There is an urgent need for STD/HIV programmes in university health services that take into consideration the sexuality and psychosocial issues of MSM students.
HIV risk behavior and HIV testing among rural and urban men who have sex with men in Zhejiang Province, China: A respondent-driven sampling study

Abstract:Background Currently, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) sentinel surveillance among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China conducted in large and medium-sized cities, and no HIV sentinel surveillance conducted in rural areas. HIV testing and intervention is predominantly conducted in urban areas, there have been a limited number of studies in rural areas MSM, it is necessary to conduct the investigation of HIV risk sexual behavior, HIV testing among rural and urban MSM. Method Between December 2013 and August 2015, a cross-sectional study was conducted in rural and urban areas in Zhejiang Province using respondent-driven sampling (RDS). Participants completed face-to-face interviewer-administered questionnaire surveys and were tested for HIV. Results A total of 710 MSM participants were recruited, of whom 36.1% were from rural areas. The overall HIV prevalence was 16.6%, and was considerably lower among MSM living in rural areas (3.9%) than those living in urban areas (24.2%). 61.1% participants had not condom use with male sexual behavior in the past 6 months (86.7% in rural areas and 46.7% in urban areas). The social demographic and behavioral characteristics had significance difference among rural and urban MSM. Multivariate logistic regression revealed that, compared to men living in urban areas, MSM living in rural areas MSM were more likely to use dating apps to find sexual partners, were more likely to engage in bisexual behavior, and had lower condom use. 43.0% participants had been tested for HIV in the past year (41.8% in rural areas and 43.6% in urban areas). Multivariate logistic regression also revealed that among participants living in rural areas, having rural health insurance and not accepting HIV intervention were associated with lower HIV testing rates, while a higher monthly income and through use of internet to find sexual partner were associated with higher rates of HIV testing. Conclusion High risk behavior was prevalent, and HIV testing rates were low among MSM living in rural areas compare to urban areas in Zhejiang Province, therefore, preventative intervention measures should be immediately among rural MSM urgently to reduce HIV transmission and to promote HIV testing.
Prevalence of Condomless Anal Intercourse and Recent Hiv Testing and Their Associated Factors among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Hangzhou, China: A Respondent-Driven Sampling Survey

Abstract:Men who have sex with men (MSM) are a large high-risk population for HIV infection in recent years in China. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Hangzhou, China, to determine rates of condomless anal intercourse (CAI), recent HIV testing (in the recent year) and associated factors using respondent-driven sampling. Questionnaires using face-to-face interviews were employed to collect data on sexual risk behaviors and HIV testing. Five hundred eleven MSM were recruited, of which 459 (89.8%) had anal intercourse in the past 6 months. Of these 459 participants, 457 (99.6%) answered whether they had taken an HIV test in the recent year, so only their data were analyzed. Weighted data were analyzed using bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. The CAI rate with male partners in the past 6 months was 43.7% (95% confidence interval [CI], 34.0-51.5%), while the rate of condomless vaginal intercourse (CVI) was 21.6% (95% CI, 15.6-32.3%). The prevalence of recent HIV testing was 56.8% (95% CI, 48.7-66.5%), while the prevalence of HIV and syphilis were 8.8% and 6.5%, respectively. Multivariate analysis indicated that CAI was associated with earlier homosexual debut, suicidal inclinations, childhood sexual abuse, HIV testing in the recent year, and lower estimate of HIV prevalence. Recent HIV testing was associated with homosexual debut age, engaging in CAI with male partners in the past 6 months, having oral sex in the past 6 months, self-perceived higher likelihood of HIV infection, knowing about antiretroviral therapy for HIV/AIDS, receiving AIDS/sexually transmitted infection (STI) interventions in the past year, and syphilis infection. Given high prevalence of HIV and syphilis, high levels of CAI and CVI, and low HIV testing rate, the results indicated high risk of HIV infection and transmission among MSM. HIV prevention interventions should target MSM with early homosexual debut and psychosocial health problems, while HIV/AIDS education among MSM should focus on increasing knowledge of HIV risk, estimated HIV prevalence and antiretroviral therapy, and improving risk perception of HIV acquisition.

Abstract:Objective To describe the behavioral characteristics,human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) prevalence and associated factors among men who have sex with men (MSM)in Zhejiang Province.Methods MSM HIV/AIDS sentinels surveillance data from 2010 to 2013 were collected.Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were conducted to decide the factors associated with HIV infection.Results The HIV prevalence of MSM in Zhejiang province was maintained around 8％ during 2010-2013.The rate of consistently condom use during anal sex intercourse with mate partners in recent six month stabilized at around 45 ％.Survey venues,age,household,condom use frequency during anal sex intercourse with male partners in recent six months,commercial homosexual behavior in recent six month,syphilis infection and receiving HIV related counseling and intervention in recent year were factors related to HIV infection.Among those factors,syphilis infection was the most important risk factor,and consistent condom use during sex intercourse with male partner in the recent six month was the most important protective factor.Conclusion The rate of HIV awareness and receiving HIV intervention services among MSM increased while their risk behaviors and condom use were not changed significantly.Therefore,efforts should be made to focus on HIV intervention effects among MSM and to find more effective intervention methods in the future.

Abstract:The high and continually increasing prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted diseases among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China underscores the critical importance of examining the exact sexual networks that result in HIV transmission, as well as HIV infection, using powerful sampling methods, such as respondent-driven sampling (RDS), to improve the sexual health of this population.

Abstract:To understand the prevalence of and factors associated with unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Beijing.Five hundred MSM were recruited for a survey using Respondent Driven Sampling (RDS) method, from September to October in 2009. A computer-assisted, interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to gather information including demographics, sexual behaviors and condom use social norms (a scaled number). Variables were evaluated by using RDSAT and SAS software.Mean age of the participants was 30.6 years, with 96.0% of them as Han ethnicity and 68.5% having had at least high school or higher education level. 72.8% of them were unmarried, with 61.7% of them identified themselves as homosexual, 61.2% had > 1 male partners in the past six months, and the prevalence of UAI was 42.0%. Significant bivariate predictors of UAI would include condom use social norms score, role for anal sex with male sex partner, number of male sexual partners in the past 6 months and amount of alcohol consumed. In multivariable analysis, UAI was associated with a higher condom use social norms score (AOR = 1.2, 95%CI: 1.1 - 1.3), receptive anal intercourse (AOR = 2.0, 95%CI: 1.3 - 3.2) and drinking alcohol more than 3 times per month in the past 12 months (AOR = 1.6, 95%CI: 1.1 - 2.5).The prevalence of UAI was high in the MSM community in Beijing, suggesting that efforts should be targeting on how to make the condom use a social norm and being promoted.

Abstract:Population size estimation of key populations at risk of HIV is essential to every national response. We implemented population size estimation of men who have sex with men (MSM) in Ghana using a three-stage approach within the 2011 Ghana Men's Study: during the study's formative assessment, the larger integrated bio-behavioral surveillance (IBBS) survey; and during the stakeholder meeting. We used six methods in combination within the three-stage approach (literature review, mapping with census, unique object multiplier, service multiplier, wisdom of the crowd, and modified Delphi) to generate size estimates from 16 locations (4 IBBS survey sites and 12 other locations) and used the estimates from the 16 sites to extrapolate the total MSM population size of Ghana. We estimated the number of MSM in Ghana to be 30,579 with a plausible range of 21,645-34,470. The overall estimate suggests that the prevalence of MSM in Ghana is 0.48 % of the adult male population. Lessons learned are shared to inform and improve applications of the methods in future studies.

Abstract:The occurrence of Rabbit Viral Hemorrhagic Disease of domestic rabbits in the population of wild rabbits in Germany was proven through detection of antigen (hemagglutination) in spleen and liver in one animal and through detection of specific antibody in another animal. There was no epizootic connection between the two animals (different locations). The necropsy and histopathologic findings are presented from five wild rabbits which died from RVHD.
[Evaluation of Effect of Community-Based HIV/AIDS Interventions among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Eighteen Cities, China].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the effect of a community-based intervention project among men who have sex with men (MSM) after two-year implementation.METHODS:Comprehensive interventions among MSM in 18 cities of seven provinces were conducted. The pre-intervention questionnaire was conducted in September 2006 and 5178 subjects were investigated through snowball method. In May 2007, post-questionnaire was conducted and 5460 subjects were investigated through snowball or accompanied recommendation method. For each subject, a questionnaire was completed, including basic information, HIV/AIDS knowledge, behaviours and intervention status. At the same time, 5 ml intravenous blood sample was collected to detect HIV infection and evaluated the intervention effect.RESULTS:After two-year implementation, the awareness rate of HIV/AIDS knowledge increased from 76.0% (3933/5178) in 2006 to 90.5% (4943/5460) in 2008 (chi(2) = 451.786, P < 0.001); the rate of condom use in the last anal sex with males increased from 58.0% (2382/4105) to 76.7% (3643/4750) (chi(2) = 215.491, P < 0.01); the rate of consistent condom use in the last six months increased from 28.2% (1163/4118) to 44.5% (2114/4753) (chi(2) = 264.606, P < 0.01); the proportion of MSM receiving HIV antibody test increased from 18.8% (973/5170) to 39.1% (2136/5454) (chi(2) = 530.181, P < 0.01); and the HIV infection rate increased from 2.3% (118/5178) to 5.0% (271/5427) (chi(2) = 47.613, P < 0.01).CONCLUSION:The MSM community-based intervention project achieved some good results after two-year implementation and contributed to an increase in HIV/AIDS knowledge and safe sex.

Abstract:We used the capture-recapture method to estimate the population size of injecting drug users (IDU). We collected and analyzed registry data from the Drug Use Rehabilitation Center in Leshan Downtown District, designed the interval between capture phase and recapture phase, explored the data model of the capture-recapture method (CR), and estimated the size of a local IDU population. The estimated size was 3455. Establishment of a consistent data model played a key role in estimating the IDU population size using CR. CR is an easy-to-use and inexpensive technique for IDU population size estimation, which generates reliable results.
