Abstract:This proceeding summarises a talk given on the state-of-the-art of debris disc modelling. We first review the basics of debris disc physics, which is followed by a short overview of the state-of-the-art in terms of modelling dust and gas in debris disc systems.

It introduces some of their basic properties and observables, and describes how we think they form and collisionally evolve. Abstract:ABSTRACT Spatially resolved images of debris discs are necessary to determine disc morphological properties and the scattering phase function (SPF) thatantifies the brightness of scattered light as a function of phase angle. Current high-contrast imaging instruments have successfully resolved several dozens of debris discs around other stars, but few studies have investigated trends in the scattered-light, resolved population of debris discs in a uniform and consistent manner. We have combined Karhunen-Loeve Image Projection (KLIP) with radiative-transfer disc forward modelling in order to obtain the highest-quality image reductions and constrain disc morphological properties of eight debris discs imaged by the Gemini Planet Imager at H-band with a consistent and uniformly applied approach. In describing the scattering properties of our models, we assume a common SPF informed from solar system dust scattering measurements and apply it to all systems. We identify a diverse range of dust density properties among the sample, including critical radius, radial width, and vertical width. We also identify radially narrow and vertically extended discs that may have resulted from substellar companion perturbations, along with a tentative positive trend in disc eccentricity with relative disc width. We also find that using a common SPF can achieve reasonable model fits for discs that are axisymmetric and asymmetric when fitting models to each side of the disc independently, suggesting that scattering behaviour from debris discs may be similar to Solar system dust.

Abstract:The spatially resolved AU Mic debris disc is among the most famous and best-studied debris discs. We aim at a comprehensive understanding of the dust production and the dynamics of the disc objects with in depth collisional modelling including stellar radiative and corpuscular forces. Our models are compared to a suite of observational data for thermal and scattered light emission, ranging from the ALMA radial surface brightness profile at 1.3mm to polarisation measurements in the visible. Most of the data can be reproduced with a planetesimal belt having an outer edge at around 40au and subsequent inward transport of dust by stellar winds. A low dynamical excitation of the planetesimals with eccentricities up to 0.03 is preferred. The radial width of the planetesimal belt cannot be constrained tightly. Belts that are 5au and 17au wide, as well as a broad 44au-wide belt are consistent with observations. All models show surface density profiles increasing with distance from the star as inferred from observations. The best model is achieved by assuming a stellar mass loss rate that exceeds the solar one by a factor of 50. While the SED and the shape of the ALMA profile are well reproduced, the models deviate from the scattered light data more strongly. The observations show a bluer disc colour and a lower degree of polarisation for projected distances <40au than predicted by the models. The problem may be mitigated by irregularly-shaped dust grains which have scattering properties different from the Mie spheres used. From tests with a handful of selected dust materials, we derive a preference for mixtures of silicate, carbon, and ice of moderate porosity. We address the origin of the unresolved central excess emission detected by ALMA and show that it cannot stem from an additional inner belt alone. Instead, it should derive, at least partly, from the chromosphere of the central star.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Mounting observational evidence indicates that cold circumstellar gas is present in debris disc systems. This work focuses on various dynamical processes that debris disc gas may undergo. We review five mechanisms that can transport angular momentum and their applications to debris discs. These include molecular viscosity, hydrodynamic turbulence, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, magnetized disc winds, and laminar magnetic stress. We find that molecular viscosity can result in α as high as ≲0.1 for sufficiently low densities, while the Rossby wave instability is a possible source of hydrodynamic turbulence and structure formation. We argue that the vertical shear instability is unlikely due to the long cooling times. The onset of the magnetorotational instability (MRI) is dichotomous: for low-density discs the MRI can be excited at the mid-plane, while for high-mass discs it may only be operating at z > 2 − 3H, if at all. The MHD wind and laminar magnetic stress mechanisms rely on the configuration and strength of any background large-scale magnetic field, the existence of which is uncertain and possibly unlikely. We conclude that the dominant mechanism and its efficiency in transporting angular momentum vary from one system to the other, depending especially closely on the gas density. More detailed analyses shall be performed in the future focusing on representative, nearby debris discs.

Abstract:This paper studied the structures of debris discs, focusing on the conditions that can form an axisymmetric-looking outer disc from systems with inner clumps. The main conclusion was that as long as the dominated dust grains are smaller than the blowout size, it is easy to form an axisymmetric-looking outer debris disc, which is part of a quasi-steady state of the whole system. This quasi-steady state is established through the balance between grain generations and a continuous out-going grain flow. Assuming there is an event that starts planetesimal collisions and the corresponding grain generations, this balance can be approached in a few thousand years. This result suggested that a quasi-steady-state picture could solve the possible mass budget problem of Vega's outer debris disc.

Abstract:Many members of nearby young moving groups exhibit infrared excess attributed to circumstellar debris dust, formed via erosion of planetesimals. With their proximity and well-dated ages, these groups are excellent laboratories for studying the early evolution of debris dust and of planetesimal belts. ALMA can spatially resolve the disk emission, revealing the location and extent of these belts, putting constraints on planetesimal evolution models, and allowing us to study planet-disk interactions. While the main trends of dust evolution in debris disks are well-known, there is almost no information on the evolution of gas. During the transition from protoplanetary to debris state, even the origin of gas is dubious. Here we review the exciting new results ALMA provided by observing young debris disks, and discuss possible future research directions.

Abstract:The light scattered from dust grains in debris disks is typically modeled as compact spheres using Lorenz-Mie theory or as porous spheres by incorporating an effective medium theory. In this work we examine the effect of incorporating a more realistic particle morphology on estimated radiation-pressure blowout sizes. To calculate the scattering and absorption cross sections of irregularly shaped dust grains, we use the discrete dipole approximation. These cross sections are necessary to calculate the $\beta$-ratio, which determines whether dust grains can remain gravitationally bound to their star. We calculate blowout sizes for a range of stellar spectral types corresponding with stars known to host debris disks. As with compact spheres, more luminous stars blow out larger irregularly shaped dust grains. We also find that dust grain composition influences blowout size such that absorptive grains are more readily removed from the disk. Moreover, the difference between blowout sizes calculated assuming spherical particles versus particle morphologies more representative of real dust particles is compositionally dependent as well, with blowout size estimates diverging further for transparent grains. We find that the blowout sizes calculated have a strong dependence on the particle model used, with differences in the blowout size calculated being as large as an order of magnitude for particles of similar porosities.

Radiation pressure clear-out of dusty photoevaporating discs

Abstract:Theoretical models of protoplanetary disc dispersal predict a phase where photoevaporation has truncated the disc at several AU, creating a pressure trap which is dust-rich. Previous models predicted this phase could be long-lived (~Myr), contrary to the observational constraints. We show that dust in the pressure trap can be removed from the disc by radiation pressure exerting a significant acceleration, and hence radial velocity, on small dust particles that reside in the surface layers of the disc. The dust in the pressure trap is not subject to radial drift so it can grow to reach sizes large enough to fragment. Hence small particles removed from the surface layers are replaced by the fragments of larger particles. This link means radiation pressure can deplete the dust at all particle sizes. Through a combination of 1D and 2D models, along with secular models that follow the disc's long-term evolution, we show that radiation pressure can deplete dust from pressure traps created by photoevaporation in ~1e5 years, while the photoevaporation created cavity still resides at 10s of AU. After this phase of radiation pressure removal of dust, the disc is gas-rich and dust depleted and radially optically thin to stellar light, having observational signatures similar to a gas-rich, young debris disc. Indeed many of the young stars (~<10 Myr old) classified as hosting a debris disc may rather be discs that have undergone this process.

The influence of dust grain porosity on the analysis of debris disc observations

Abstract:Debris discs are often modelled assuming compact dust grains, but more and more evidence for the presence of porous grains is found. We aim at quantifying the systematic errors introduced when modelling debris discs composed of porous dust with a disc model assuming spherical, compact grains. We calculate the optical dust properties derived via the fast, but simple effective medium theory. The theoretical lower boundary of the size distribution -- the so-called 'blowout size' -- is compared in the cases of compact and porous grains. Finally, we simulate observations of hypothetical debris discs with different porosities and feed them into a fitting procedure using only compact grains. The deviations of the results for compact grains from the original model based on porous grains are analysed. We find that the blowout size increases with increasing grain porosity up to a factor of two. An analytical approximation function for the blowout size as a function of porosity and stellar luminosity is derived. The analysis of the geometrical disc set-up, when constrained by radial profiles, are barely affected by the porosity. However, the determined minimum grain size and the slope of the grain size distribution derived using compact grains are significantly overestimated. Thus, the unexpectedly high ratio of minimum grain size to blowout size found by previous studies using compact grains can be partially described by dust grain porosity, although the effect is not strong enough to completely explain the trend.

Why dust pressure matters in debris discs

Abstract:There is a common assumption in the particulate disc community that the pressure in particulate discs is essentially zero and that the disc streamlines follow Keplerian orbits, in the absence of self-gravity or external perturbations. It is also often assumed that the fluid description of particulate discs is not valid in the presence of crossing orbits (e.g. from nonzero free eccentricities). These stem from the misconception that fluid pressure arises due to the (typically rare) collisions between particles and that the velocity of particles in fluids are single-valued in space. In reality, pressure is a statistical property of the particle distribution function which arises precisely because there is a distribution of velocities at a given position. In this letter we demonstrate, with simple examples, that pressure in particulate discs is non-zero and is related to the inclination and free eccentricity distributions of the constituent particles in the discs. This means many common models of debris discs implicitly assume a nonzero, and potentially quite significant, dust pressure. We shall also demonstrate that the bulk motion of the dust is not the same as the particle motion and that the presence of pressure gradients can lead to strong departures from Keplerian motion.

Interpreting the extended emission around three nearby debris disc host stars

Abstract:Cool debris discs are a relic of the planetesimal formation process around their host star, analogous to the solar system's Edgeworth-Kuiper belt. As such, they can be used as a proxy to probe the origin and formation of planetary systems like our own. The Herschel Open Time Key Programmes "DUst around NEarby Stars" (DUNES) and "Disc Emission via a Bias-free Reconnaissance in the Infrared/Submillimetre" (DEBRIS) observed many nearby, sun-like stars at far-infrared wavelengths seeking to detect and characterize the emission from their circumstellar dust. Excess emission attributable to the presence of dust was identified from around $\sim$ 20% of stars. Herschel's high angular resolution ($\sim$ 7" FWHM at 100 $\mu$m) provided the capacity for resolving debris belts around nearby stars with radial extents comparable to the solar system (50 to 100 au). As part of the DUNES and DEBRIS surveys, we obtained observations of three debris disc stars, HIP 22263 (HD 30495), HIP 62207 (HD 110897), and HIP 72848 (HD 131511), at far-infrared wavelengths with the Herschel PACS instrument. Combining these new images and photometry with ancilliary data from the literature, we undertook simultaneous multi-wavelength modelling of the discs' radial profiles and spectral energy distributions using three different methodologies: single annulus, modified black body, and a radiative transfer code. We present the first far-infrared spatially resolved images of these discs and new single-component debris disc models. We characterize the capacity of the models to reproduce the disc parameters based on marginally resolved emission through analysis of two sets of simulated systems (based on the HIP 22263 and HIP 62207 data) with the noise levels typical of the Herschel images. We find that the input parameter values are recovered well at noise levels attained in the observations presented here.

Abstract:The Protoplanetary Discussions conference --- held in Edinburgh, UK, from 7th --11th March 2016 --- included several open sessions led by participants. This paper reports on the discussions collectively concerned with the multiphysics modelling of protoplanetary discs, including the self-consistent calculation of gas and dust dynamics, radiative transfer and chemistry. After a short introduction to each of these disciplines in isolation, we identify a series of burning questions and grand challenges associated with their continuing development and integration. We then discuss potential pathways towards solving these challenges, grouped by strategical, technical and collaborative developments. This paper is not intended to be a review, but rather to motivate and direct future research and collaboration across typically distinct fields based on \textit{community driven input}, to encourage further progress in our understanding of circumstellar and protoplanetary discs.

A re-investigation of debris disc halos

Abstract:A significant fraction of debris discs consist of a bright ring beyond which extends a wide halo. Such a halo should be made of small grains produced in the ring of parent bodies (PB) and pushed on high-e orbits by radiation pressure. It has been shown that, under several simplifying assumptions, the surface brightness (SB) of this halo should radially decrease as $r^{-3.5}$ in scattered light. We aim to revisit the halo phenomenon and focus on two so far unexplored issues: 1) How the unavoidable presence of small unbound grains, non-isotropic scattering phase functions (SPF) and finite instrument resolution affect scattered light SB profiles, and 2) How the halo phenomenon manifests itself at longer wavelengths. We find that unbound grains account for a significant fraction of the halo's luminosity in scattered light, and can significantly flatten the SB radial profile. Realistic size-dependent SPFs also have an effect, resulting here again in shallower SB profiles. For edge-on discs, non-resolving the vertical profile can also flatten the projected SB. We show that roughly half of the observationally-derived halo profiles found in the literature are compatible with our new results, and that roughly half of the remaining systems are probably shaped by additional processes. We also propose that, in future observational studies, the characteristics of PB belt and halos should be fitted separately. In thermal emission, wide halos should remain detectable up to the far-IR and, with the exception of the $\sim 8-15\mu$m domain, the halo accounts for more than half of the system's total flux up to $\lambda\sim80-90\mu$m. The halo's contribution strongly decreases in the sub-mm to mm but still represents a few percents of the system's luminosity at $\lambda\sim 1$mm. For unresolved systems, the presence of a halo can also affect the determination of the disc's radius from its SED.

On Grain Dynamics in Debris Discs: Continuous Outward Flows and Embedded Planets

Abstract:This study employed grain dynamic models to examine the density distribution of debris discs, and discussed the effects of the collisional time-intervals of asteroidal bodies, the maximum grain sizes, and the chemical compositions of the dust grains of the models, in order to find out whether a steady out-moving flow with an 1/R profile could be formed. The results showed that a model with new grains every 100 years, a smaller maximum grain size, and a composition C400 has the best fit to the 1/R profile because: (1) the grains have larger values of beta on average,therefore, they can be blown out easily; (2) the new grains are generated frequently enough to replace those have been blown out. With the above two conditions, some other models can have a steady out-moving flow with an approximate 1/R profile. However, those models in which new grains are generated every 1000 years have density distributions far from the profile of a continuous out-moving flow. Moreover, the analysis on the signatures of planets in debris discs showed that there are no indications when a planet is in a continuous out-moving flow, however, the signatures are obvious in a debris disc with long-lived grains.

Abstract:We present results from the earliest observations of DEBRIS, a Herschel Key Programme to conduct a volume- and flux-limited survey for debris discs in A-type through M-type stars. PACS images (from chop/nod or scan-mode observations) at 100 and 160 micron are presented toward two A-type stars and one F-type star: beta Leo, beta UMa and eta Corvi. All three stars are known disc hosts. Herschel spatially resolves the dust emission around all three stars (marginally, in the case of beta UMa), providing new information about discs as close as 11 pc with sizes comparable to that of the Solar System. We have combined these data with existing flux density measurements of the discs to refine the SEDs and derive estimates of the fractional luminosities, temperatures and radii of the discs.

A nearby galaxy perspective on interstellar dust properties and their evolution

Abstract:Interstellar dust is a key physical ingredient of galaxies, obscuring star formation, regulating the heating and cooling of the gas, and building-up chemical complexity. In this manuscript, I give a wide review of interstellar dust properties and some of the modern techniques used to study it. I start with a general introduction presenting the main concepts, in molecular and solid-state physics, required to understand the contemporary literature on the subject. I then review the empirical evidence we currently use to constrain state-of-the-art dust models. Follows a long discussion about our current understanding of the grain properties of nearby galaxies, with an emphasis on the results from spectral energy distribution modeling. The following chapter presents dust evolution at all scales. I review the different microphysical evolution processes, and the way they are accounted for in cosmic dust evolution models. I give my take on the origin of interstellar dust in galaxies of different metallicities. The last chapter focusses on methodology. I give an introduction to the Bayesian method and compare it to frequentist techniques. I discuss the epistemological consequences of the two approaches, and show why the field of interstellar dust requires a probabilistic viewpoint. I end the manuscript with a summary of the major breakthroughs achieved in the past decade, and delineate a few prospectives for the next decade.

Debris disc formation induced by planetary growth

Abstract:Several hundred stars older than 10 million years have been observed to have infrared excesses. These observations are explained by dust grains formed by the collisional fragmentation of hidden planetesimals. Such dusty planetesimal discs are known as debris discs. In a dynamically cold planetesimal disc, collisional coagulation of planetesimals produces planetary embryos which then stir the surrounding leftover planetesimals. Thus, the collisional fragmentation of planetesimals that results from planet formation forms a debris disc. We aim to determine the properties of the underlying planetesimals in debris discs by numerically modelling the coagulation and fragmentation of planetesimal populations. The brightness and temporal evolution of debris discs depend on the radial distribution of planetesimal discs, the location of their inner and outer edges, their total mass, and the size of planetesimals in the disc. We find that a radially narrow planetesimal disc is most likely to result in a debris disc that can explain the trend of observed infrared excesses of debris discsvvv around G-type stars, for which planet formation occurs only before 100 million years. Early debris disc formation is induced by planet formation, while the later evolution is explained by the collisional decay of leftover planetesimals around planets that have already formed. Planetesimal discs with underlying planetesimals of radii ∼100 km at ≈30 au most readily explain the Spitzer Space Telescope 24 and 70 μm fluxes from debris discs around G-type stars.

Abstract:Multi-wavelength scattered light imaging of debris disks may inform dust properties including typical size and mineral composition. Existing studies have investigated a small set of individual systems across a variety of imaging instruments and filters, calling for uniform comparison studies to systematically investigate dust properties. We obtain the surface brightness of dust particles in debris disks by post-processing coronagraphic imaging observations, and compare the multi-wavelength reflectance of dust. For a sample of resolved debris disks, we perform a systematic analysis on the reflectance properties of their birth rings. We reduced the visible and near-infrared images of 23 debris disk systems hosted by A through M stars using two coronagraphs onboard the Hubble Space Telescope: the STIS instrument observations centering at 0.58 $\mu$m, and the NICMOS instrument at 1.12 $\mu$m or 1.60 $\mu$m. For proper recovery of debris disks, we used classical reference differential imaging for STIS, and adopted non-negative matrix factorization with forward modeling for NICMOS. By dividing disk signals by stellar signals to take into account of intrinsic stellar color effects, we systematically obtained and compared the reflectance of debris birth rings at ~90 deg scattering angle. Debris birth rings typically exhibit a blue color at ~90 deg scattering angle. As the stellar luminosity increases, the color tends to be more neutral. A likely L-shaped color-albedo distribution indicates a clustering of scatterer properties. The observed color trend correlates with the expected blow-out size of dust particles. The color-albedo clustering likely suggests different populations of dust in these systems. More detailed radiative transfer models with realistic dust morphology will contribute to explaining the observed color and color-albedo distribution of debris systems.
