Abstract:Two-dimensional granular discharge flow driven by gravity under the influence of an obstacle is experimentally investigated. A horizontal exit of width $W$ is opened at the bottom of vertical Hele-Shaw cell filled with stainless-steel particles to start the discharge flow. In this experiment, a circular obstacle is placed in front of the exit. Thus, the distance between the exit and obstacle $L$ is also an important parameter. During the discharge, granular-flow state is acquired by a high-speed camera. The bulk discharge-flow rate is also measured by load cell sensors. The obtained high-speed-image data are analyzed to clarify the particle-level granular-flow dynamics. Using the measured data, we find that the obstacle above the exit affects the granular-flow field. Specifically, the existence of obstacle results in large horizontal granular temperature and small packing fraction. This tendency becomes significant when $L$ is smaller than approximately 6$D_g$ when $W \simeq 4 D_g$, where $D_g$ is diameter of particles.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to study the statistical characteristics of gravity - driven granular discharge flow under the influence of obstacles. Specifically, the author explored the influence of placing a circular obstacle at the bottom opening of a vertical Hele - Shaw cell on granular flow through experimental methods. The focus of the study is: 1. **Flow rate**: The granular flow rate \(Q\) was measured under different outlet widths \(W\) and distances \(L\) between the obstacle and the outlet. The experimental results show that the presence of an obstacle will reduce the flow rate, and \(Q\) increases with the increase of \(W\) and \(L\). 2. **Velocity distribution**: High - speed cameras were used to capture the movement of particles and analyze the velocity distribution of particles. The results show that the presence of an obstacle causes the velocity distribution in the horizontal direction to split or broaden, which may be due to the movement of particles bypassing the obstacle and the enhanced particle collisions. 3. **Granular temperature and packing fraction**: The horizontal granular temperature \(T_{gx}\) and packing fraction \(\phi\) were measured in the area close to the outlet. When the obstacle distance \(L\) is less than about 40 mm (approximately equal to 6 times the particle diameter \(D_g\)), the horizontal granular temperature increases and the packing fraction decreases. This change may lead to a reduction in the risk of clogging. Overall, this paper analyzes in detail the influence of obstacles on granular discharge flow through experimental data, revealing how obstacles change the flow behavior and packing characteristics of particles, which is helpful for understanding and reducing the occurrence of clogging phenomena.
