Abstract:Gamma-Ray Bursts(GRBs) are short and intense flashes of gamma-rays observed from the sky in random directions.Although discovered as early as in 1967 by Vela satellite,GRBs were confirmed to be of cosmological origin through the observation of their afterglows and host galaxies till 1997.In this article,the recent progresses in observations and theories,especially in the Swift and Fermi eras,are briefly reviewed.The standard fireball model is described first.A detailed description on the origin of afterglows,i.e., synchrotron radiation of relativistic electrons which are accelerated by the shocks from the interaction between the relativistic outflows and surrounding medium,is then presented. The micro physics of shocks and the nonthermal radiation mechanisms is also addressed in detail.In Section 3,the progenitors of different kinds of GRBs are introduced.Finally,a short prospect is given.

Abstract:Recent broad-band observations of Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) prompt emission sharpened the debates regarding several open questions in GRB physics, including jet composition, energy dissipation mechanism, particle acceleration mechanism, and radiation mechanism. Here I review these open questions, the arguments in support of the opponents on both sides of the debates, as well as observational clues and tests that can be used to settle down these debates in the future. I also summarize my personal view on GRB prompt emission: The normal "Band"-function component as observed in most GRBs (e. g. in GRB 080916C) is likely synchrotron emission from an optically thin region. The narrow "Band" component observed in GRB 090902B, and the quasi-thermal "shoulder" component superposed on the left wing of the Band component in some GRBs are the photosphere emission component. Different GRBs may have different values of magnetization parameter sigma(0) at the central engine, which may be the origin of the diverse spectral behaviors as observed.
A comprehensive statistical study on gamma-ray bursts

Abstract:In order to obtain an overview of the gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), we need a full sample. In this paper, we collected 6289 GRBs (from GRB 910421 to GRB 160509A) from the literature, including prompt emission, afterglow and host galaxy properties. We hope to use this large sample to reveal the intrinsic properties of GRB. We have listed all the data in machine readable tables, including the properties of the GRBs, correlation coefficients and linear regression results of two arbitrary parameters, and linear regression results of any three parameters. These machine readable tables could be used as a data reservoir for further studies on the classifications or correlations. One may find some intrinsic properties from these statistical results. With this comprehensive table, it is possible to find relations between different parameters, and to classify the GRBs into different kinds of sub-groups. With the completion, it may reveal the nature of GRBs and may be used as tools like pseudo-redshift indicators, standard candles, etc. All the machine readable data and statistical results are available on the website of the journal.

GRB Progenitors and Observational Criteria

Abstract:Phenomenologically, two classes of GRBs (long/soft vs. short/hard) are identified based on their gamma-ray properties. The boundary between the two classes is vague. Multi-wavelength observations lead to identification of two types of GRB progenitor: one related to massive stars (Type II), and another related to compact stars (Type I). Evidence suggests that the majority of long GRBs belong to Type II, while at least the majority of nearby short GRBs belong to Type I. Nonetheless, counter examples do exist. Both long-duration Type I and short-duration Type II GRBs have been observed. In this talk, I review the complications in GRB classification and efforts in diagnosing GRB progenitor based on multiple observational criteria. In particular, I raise the caution to readily accept that all short/hard GRBs detected by BATSE are due to compact star mergers. Finally, I propose to introduce "amplitude" as the third dimension (besides "duration" and "hardness") to quantify burst properties, and point out that the "tip-of-iceberg" effect may introduce confusion in defining the physical category of GRBs, especially for low-amplitude, high-redshift GRBs.

Recent broadband observational campaigns led by the Swift Observatory reveal rich features of these GRB afterglows. Here we review the latest observational progress and discuss the theoretical implications for understanding the central engine, composition, and geometric configuration of GRB jets, as well as their interactions with the ambient medium.

Abstract:Well-sampled optical lightcurves of 146 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are complied from the literature. Multiple optical emission components are extracted with power-law function fits to these lightcurves. We present a systematical analysis for statistical properties and their relations to prompt gamma-ray emission and X-ray afterglow for each component. We show that peak luminosity in the prompt and late flares are correlated and the evolution of the peak luminosity may signal the evolution of the accretion rate. No tight correlation between the shallow decay phase/plateau and prompt gamma-ray emission is found. Assuming that they are due to a long-lasting wind injected by a compact object, we show that the injected behavior favors the scenarios of a long-lasting wind powered by a Poynting flux from a black hole via the Blandford-Znajek mechanism fed by fall-back mass or by the spin-down energy release of a magnetar after the main burst episode. The peak luminosity of the afterglow onset is tightly correlated with Eγ,iso, and it is dimmer as peaking later. Assuming that the onset bump is due to the fireball deceleration by the external medium, we examine the Γ0 – Eγ,iso relation and find that it is confirmed with the current sample. Optical re-brightening is observed in 30 GRBs in our sample. It shares the same relation between the width and the peak time as found in the onset bump, but no clear correlation between LR,p and Eγ,iso similar to that observed for the onset bumps is found. Although its peak luminosity also decays with time, the slope is much shallower than that of the onset peak, as is the case for the onset bumps. We get , being consistent with off-axis observations to an expanding external fireball in a wind-like circum medium. Therefore, the late re-brightening may signal another jet component. Mixing of different emission components may be the reason for the observed chromatic breaks of the shallow decay segment in different energy bands.

Abstract:AbstractWell-sampled optical lightcurves of 146 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are compiled from literature. We identify possible emission components based on our empirical fits and present statistical analysis for these components. We find that the flares are related to prompt emission, suggesting that they could have the same origin in different episodes. The shallow decay segment is not correlated with prompt gamma-rays. It likely signals a long-lasting injected wind from GRB central engines. Early after onset peak is closely related with prompt emission. The ambient medium density profile is likely n ∝ r−1. No correlation between the late re-brightening bump and prompt gamma-rays or the onset bump is found. They may be from another jet component.

Abstract:We provide a comprehensive review of major developments in our understanding of gamma-ray bursts, with particular focus on the discoveries made within the last fifteen years when their true nature was uncovered. We describe the observational properties of photons from the radio to 100s GeV bands, both in the prompt emission and the afterglow phases. Mechanisms for the generation of these photons in GRBs are discussed and confronted with observations to shed light on the physical properties of these explosions, their progenitor stars and the surrounding medium. After presenting observational evidence that a powerful, collimated, jet moving at close to the speed of light is produced in these explosions, we describe our current understanding regarding the generation, acceleration, and dissipation of the jet. We discuss mounting observational evidence that long duration GRBs are produced when massive stars die, and that at least some short duration bursts are associated with old, roughly solar mass, compact stars. The question of whether a black-hole or a strongly magnetized, rapidly rotating neutron star is produced in these explosions is also discussed. We provide a brief summary of what we have learned about relativistic collisionless shocks and particle acceleration from GRB afterglow studies, and discuss the current understanding of radiation mechanism during the prompt emission phase. We discuss theoretical predictions of possible high-energy neutrino emission from GRBs and the current observational constraints. Finally, we discuss how these explosions may be used to study cosmology, e.g. star formation, metal enrichment, reionization history, as well as the formation of first stars and galaxies in the universe.

Abstract:Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most luminous electromagnetic explosions in the Universe, which emit up to 8.8×10^54 erg isotropic equivalent energy in the hard X-ray band. The high luminosity makes them detectable out to the largest distances yet explored in the Universe. GRBs, as bright beacons in the deep Universe, would be the ideal tool to probe the properties of high-redshift universe: including the cosmic expansion and dark energy, star formation rate, the reionization epoch and the metal enrichment history of the Universe. In this article, we review the luminosity correlations of GRBs, and implications for constraining the cosmological parameters and dark energy. Observations show that the progenitors of long GRBs are massive stars. So it is expected that long GRBs are tracers of star formation rate. We also review the high-redshift star formation rate derived from GRBs, and implications for the cosmic reionization history. The afterglows of GRBs generally have broken power-law spectra, so it is possible to extract intergalactic medium (IGM) absorption features. We also present the capability of high-redshift GRBs to probe the pre-galactic metal enrichment and the first stars.

Abstract:Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are the brightest objects observed. They are also the most relativistic objects known so far. GRBs occur when an ultrarelativisitic ejecta is slowed down by internal shocks within the flow. Relativistic particles accelerated within these shocks emit the observed gamma-rays by a combination of synchrotron and inverse Compton emission. External shocks with the circumstellar matter slow down further the ejecta and produce the afterglow, which lasts for months. Comparison of the predictions of this fireball model with observations confirm a relativistic macroscopic motion with a Lorentz factor of $\Gamma \ge 100$. Breaks in the light curves of the afterglow indicate that GRBs are beamed with typical opening angles of a few degrees. The temporal variability of the gamma-rays signal provide us with the best indirect evidence on the nature of the ``internal engine'' that powers the GRBs and accelerates the relativistic ejecta, suggesting accretion of a massive disk onto a newborn black hole: GRBs are the birth cries of these black holes. Two of the most promising models: Neutron Star Mergers and Collapars lead naturally to this scenario.

Properties of Gamma-Ray Bursts Associated with Supernovae and Kilonovae

Abstract:We systematically compare the temporal and spectral properties of 53 Supernova (SN)-associated and 15 Kilonova (KN)-associated Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). We find that the spectral parameters of both types GRBs are identically and lognormally distributed, consistent with those normal GRBs. The bolometric luminosities of SN/GRBs and KN/GRBs have a triple form with the corresponding break luminosities of SN/GRBs are roughly two orders of magnitude larger than those of KN/GRBs. We build the power-law relations between the spectral lag and the luminosity of prompt $\gamma$-rays with indices of $-1.43\pm0.33$ for SN/GRBs and $-2.17\pm0.57$ for KN/GRBs in the laboratory frame, which are respectively coincident with the rest-frame values. We verify that both SN/GRBs and KN/GRBs comply with their own Amati relations that match those of long and short GRBs, respectively. Analyzing X-ray afterglows with good plateau segments, we build the power-law relations between the X-ray luminosity and the plateau time with an index of $-1.12\pm0.17$ for KN/GRBs and $-1.08\pm0.22$ for SN/GRBs, which can be well explained by the relativistic shock driven by an energy injection. The plots of luminosity-lag, Amati relation and luminosity-time show heavy overlap between the two types of GRBs, implying that they might share the same radiation mechanism despite originating from different progenitors or central engines.

Abstract:We present observations of the early X-ray emission for a sample of 40 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) obtained using the Swift satellite for which the narrow-field instruments were pointed at the burst within 10 minutes of the trigger. Using data from the Burst Alert and X-Ray Telescopes, we show that the X-ray light curve can be well described by an exponential that relaxes into a power law, often with flares superimposed. The transition time between the exponential and the power law provides a physically defined timescale for the burst duration. In most bursts the power law breaks to a shallower decay within the first hour, and a late emission "hump" is observed which can last for many hours. In other GRBs the hump is weak or absent. The observed variety in the shape of the early X-ray light curve can be explained as a combination of three components: prompt emission from the central engine; afterglow; and the late hump. In this scenario, afterglow emission begins during or soon after the burst and the observed shape of the X-ray light curve depends on the relative strengths of the emission due to the central engine and that of the afterglow. There is a strong correlation such that those GRBs with stronger afterglow components have brighter early optical emission. The late emission hump can have a total fluence equivalent to that of the prompt phase. GRBs with the strongest late humps have weak or no X-ray flares.

Photometric and Spectroscopic Observations of GRB 210104A: Bright Reverse Shock Emission and Dense Circumburst Environment

Abstract:Early afterglow observations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are valuable for exploring the properties of their jets and ambient medium. We report our photometric and spectroscopic observations of GRB 210104A and discuss its jet properties with multiwavelength data. Our spectroscopic observation reveals several absorption features and a tentative redshift of 0.46 is identified. A bright optical flare that has a peak brightness of R = 13 mag at 112 +/- 7 s was observed in the R band during 67 similar to 165 s post the GRB trigger. The flux of the R-band afterglow decays with a slope of alpha (O) = - 0.91 +/- 0.03 at t > 650 s. The early X-ray afterglow lightcurve is a smooth bump, and it decays with a slope of alpha (X) = -1.18 +/- 0.01 at late epoch. Our joint spectral fit to the optical-X-ray afterglows during (1.1-1.3) x 10(4) s yields a photon index Gamma(O,X) = -1.82 +/- 0.04. The derived host galaxy extinction is A ( R ) = 0.87. Attributing the early optical flare to the reverse-shock (RS) emission and the late optical-X-ray emission to the forward shock emission, the optical and X-ray lightcurves at t < 3 x 10(4) s can be well fit adopting a Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm. Comparing the properties of GRB 210104A with other GRBs that have detection of bright RS emission, we show that its jet is mildly magnetized (R (B) = 28), with high radiation efficiency (77%), is subenergetic (E (k,iso) = 4.5 x 10(51) erg), and moderately relativistic (Gamma(0) similar to 35) in a density medium (n (0) similar to 417 cm(-3)). It follows the tight L ( gamma,iso)-E (p,z)-Gamma(0) relation as with typical GRBs.

Abstract:The taxonomy of optical emission detected during the critical first few minutes after the onset of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) defines two broad classes: prompt optical emission correlated with prompt gamma-ray emission, and early optical afterglow emission uncorrelated with the gamma-ray emission. The standard theoretical interpretation attributes prompt emission to internal shocks in the ultra-relativistic outflow generated by the internal engine; early afterglow emission is attributed to shocks generated by interaction with the surrounding medium. Here we report on observations of a bright GRB that, for the first time, clearly show the temporal relationship and relative strength of the two optical components. The observations indicate that early afterglow emission can be understood as reverberation of the energy input measured by prompt emission. Measurements of the early afterglow reverberations therefore probe the structure of the environment around the burst, whereas the subsequent response to late-time impulsive energy releases reveals how earlier flaring episodes have altered the jet and environment parameters. Many GRBs are generated by the death of massive stars that were born and died before the Universe was ten per cent of its current age, so GRB afterglow reverberations provide clues about the environments around some of the first stars.

Understanding the Nature of the Optical Emission in Gamma-Ray Bursts: Analysis from TAROT, COATLI, and RATIR Observations

Abstract:We collected the optical light curve data of 227 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed with the TAROT, COATLI, and RATIR telescopes. These consist of 133 detections and 94 upper limits. We constructed average light curves in the observer and rest frames in both X-rays (from {\itshape Swift}/XRT) and in the optical. Our analysis focused on investigating the observational and intrinsic properties of GRBs. Specifically, we examined observational properties, such as the optical brightness function of the GRBs at $T=1000$ seconds after the trigger, as well as the temporal slope of the afterglow. We also estimated the redshift distribution for the GRBs within our sample. Of the 227 GRBs analysed, we found that 116 had a measured redshift. Based on these data, we calculated a local rate of $\rho_0=0.2$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$ for these events with $z<1$. To explore the intrinsic properties of GRBs, we examined the average X-ray and optical light curves in the rest frame. We use the {\scshape afterglowpy} library to generate synthetic curves to constrain the parameters typical of the bright GRB jet, such as energy (${\langle} {E_{0}}{\rangle}\sim 10^{53.6}$~erg), opening angle (${\langle}\theta_\mathrm{core}{\rangle}\sim 0.2$~rad), and density (${\langle}n_\mathrm{0}{\rangle}\sim10^{-2.1}$ cm$^{-3}$). Furthermore, we analyse microphysical parameters, including the fraction of thermal energy in accelerated electrons (${\langle}\epsilon_e{\rangle}\sim 10^{-1.37}$) and in the magnetic field (${\langle}\epsilon_B{\rangle}\sim10^{-2.26}$), and the power-law index of the population of non-thermal electrons (${\langle}p{\rangle}\sim 2.2$).

Abstract:Open questions in GRB physics are summarized as of 2011, including classification, progenitor, central engine, ejecta composition, energy dissipation and particle acceleration mechanism, radiation mechanism, long term engine activity, external shock afterglow physics, origin of high energy emission, and cosmological setting. Prospects of addressing some of these problems with the upcoming Chinese-French GRB mission, SVOM, are outlined.

Abstract:Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are short and intense flashes at the cosmological distances, which are the most luminous explosions in the Universe. The high luminosities of GRBs make them detectable out to the edge of the visible universe. So, they are unique tools to probe the properties of high-redshift universe: including the cosmic expansion and dark energy, star formation rate, the reionization epoch and the metal evolution of the Universe. First, they can be used to constrain the history of cosmic acceleration and the evolution of dark energy in a redshift range hardly achievable by other cosmological probes. Second, long GRBs are believed to be formed by collapse of massive stars. So they can be used to derive the high-redshift star formation rate, which can not be probed by current observations. Moreover, the use of GRBs as cosmological tools could unveil the reionization history and metal evolution of the Universe, the intergalactic medium (IGM) properties and the nature of first stars in the early universe. But beyond that, the GRB high-energy photons can be applied to constrain Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) and to test Einstein's Equivalence Principle (EEP). In this paper, we review the progress on the GRB cosmology and fundamental physics probed by GRBs.

Abstract:We continue our systematic statistical study on optical afterglow data of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We present the apparent magnitude distributions of early optical afterglows at different epochs (t = 10(2) s, 10(3) s, and 1 hr) for the optical light curves of a sample of 93 GRBs (the global sample) and for sub-samples with an afterglow onset bump or a shallow decay segment. For the onset sample and shallow decay sample we also present the brightness distribution at the peak time t(p) and break time t(b), respectively. All the distributions can be fit with Gaussian functions. We further perform Monte Carlo simulations to infer the luminosity function of GRB optical emission at the rest-frame time 10(3) s, t(p), and t(b). Our results show that a single power-law luminosity function is adequate to model the data with indices -1.40 +/- 0.10, -1.06 +/- 0.16, and -1.54 +/- 0.22. Based on the derived rest-frame 10(3) s luminosity function, we generate the intrinsic distribution of the R-band apparent magnitude M-R at the observed time 10(3) s post-trigger, which peaks at M-R = 22.5 mag. The fraction of GRBs whose R-band magnitude is fainter than 22 mag and 25 mag and at the observer time 10(3) s are similar to 63% and similar to 25%, respectively. The detection probabilities of the optical afterglows with ground-based robotic telescopes and the UV-Optical Telescope on board Swift are roughly consistent with that inferred from this intrinsic M-R distribution, indicating that the variations of the dark GRB fraction among the samples with different telescopes may be due to the observational selection effect, although the existence of an intrinsically dark GRB population cannot be ruled out.

Abstract:Well-sampled optical light curves of 146 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are compiled from the literature. By empirical fitting, we identify eight possible emission components and summarize the results in a "synthetic" light curve. Both optical flare and early shallow-decay components are likely related to long-term central engine activities. We focus on their statistical properties in this paper. Twenty-four optical flares are obtained from 19 GRBs. The isotropic R-band energy is smaller than 1% of E-gamma,E-iso. The relation between the isotropic luminosities of the flares and gamma rays follows L-R,iso(F) proportional to L-gamma,iso(1.11 +/- 0.27). Later flares tend to be wider and dimmer, i.e., w(F) similar to t(p)(F)/2 and L-R,iso(F) proportional to [t(p)(F)/(1 + z)](-1.15 +/- 0.15). The detection probability of the optical flares is much smaller than that of X-ray flares. An optical shallow-decay segment is observed in 39 GRBs. The relation between the break time and break luminosity is a power law, with an index of -0.78 +/- 0.08, similar to that derived from X-ray flares. The X-ray and optical breaks are usually chromatic, but a tentative correlation is found. We suggest that similar to the prompt optical emission that tracks gamma-rays, the optical flares are also related to the erratic behavior of the central engine. The shallow-decay component is likely related to a long-lasting spinning-down central engine or piling up of flare materials onto the blast wave. Mixing of different emission components may be the reason for the diverse chromatic afterglow behaviors.
