Abstract:The theorem like Pontryagin's maximum principle for multiple integrals is proved. Unlike the usual maximum principle, the maximum should be taken not over all matrices, but only on matrices of rank one. Examples are given.

Abstract:We provide an improvment of the maximum principle of Pon-tryagin of the optimal control problems, for a system governed by an ordinary differential equation, in presence of final constraints, in the setting of the piece-wise differentiable state functions (valued in a Banach space) and of piecewise continuous control functions (valued in a metric space). As Michel we use the needlelike variations, but we introduce tools of functional analysis and a recent multiplier rule of the static optimization to make our proofs. Abstract:We prove a duality relation and an integration by parts formula for fractional operators with a general analytical kernel. Based on these basic results, we are able to prove a new Gronwall's inequality and continuity and differentiability of solutions of control differential equations. This allow us to obtain a weak version of Pontryagin's maximum principle. Moreover, our approach also allow us to consider mixed problems with both integer and fractional order operators and derive necessary optimality conditions for isoperimetric variational problems and other problems of the calculus of variations.

Abstract:In this paper the necessary conditions of optimality in the form of maximum principle are derived for a very general class of variational problems. This class includes problems with any optimization criteria and constraints that can be constructed by combining some basic types (differential equation, integral equations, algebraic equation, differential equations with delays, etc). For each problem from this class the necessary optimality conditions are produced by constructing its Lagrange function $R$ and then by dividing its variables into three groups denoted as $u(t)$, $x(t)$ and $a$ correspondingly. $a$ are parameters which are constant over time. The conditions of optimality state that a non-zero vector function of Lagrange multipliers exists such that on the optimal solution function $R$ attains maximum on $u$, is stationary on $x$, and the integral of $R$ over the control period $S$ can't be improved locally. Similar conditions are also obtained for sliding regimes. Here solution is given by the limit of maximizing sequence on which the variables of the second group are switching with infinite frequency between some (basic) values.

Abstract:In this paper we present a Neumann type maximum principle for the Laplace operator on compact Riemannian manifolds. A key point is the simple geometric nature of the constant in the a priori estimate of this maximum principle. In particular, this maximum principle can be applied to manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below and diameter bounded from above to yield a maximum estimate without dependence on a positive lower bound for the volume.

Minimax and maximin problems for sums of translates on the real axis

Abstract:Sums of translates generalize logarithms of weighted algebraic polynomials. The paper presents the solution to the minimax and maximin problems on the real axis for sums of translates. We prove that there is a unique function that is extremal in both problems. The key in our proof is a reduction to the problem on a segment. For this, we work out an analogue of the Mhaskar-Rakhmanov-Saff theorem, too.

We establish differentiability properties of the value function of problems of Optimal Control with assumptions as low as possible. Notably, we lighten the assumptions by using Gâteaux and Hadamard differentials.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the maximum principles for Laplacian and fractional Laplacian with critical integrability. We first consider the critical cases for Laplacian with zero-order term and first-order term. It is well known that for the Laplacian with zero-order term -Δ +c(x) in B_1 , c(x)∈ L^p(B_1) ( B_1⊂R^n ), the critical case for the maximum principle is p=n/2 . We show that the critical condition c(x)∈L^n/2(B_1) is not enough to guarantee the strong maximum principle. For the Laplacian with first-order term -Δ +b⃗(x) ( b⃗(x)∈ L^p(B_1) ), the critical case is p=n . In this case, we establish the maximum principle and strong maximum principle for Laplacian with first-order term. We also extend some of the maximum principles above to the fractional Laplacian. We replace the classical lower semi-continuous condition on solutions for the fractional Laplacian with some integrability condition. Then we establish a series of maximum principles for fractional Laplacian under some integrability condition on the coefficients. These conditions are weaker than the previous regularity conditions. The weakened conditions on the coefficients and the non-locality of the fractional Laplacian bring in some new difficulties. Some new techniques are developed.

Abstract:The maximal monotonicity notion in Banach spaces is extended to Riemannian manifolds of nonpositive sectional curvature, Hadamard manifolds, and proved to be equivalent to the upper semicontinuity. We consider the problem of finding a singularity of a multivalued vector field in a Hadamard manifold and present a general proximal point method to solve that problem, which extends the known proximal point algorithm in Euclidean spaces. We prove that the sequence generated by our method is well defined and converges to a singularity of a maximal monotone vector field, whenever it exists. Applications in minimization problems with constraints, minimax problems and variational inequality problems, within the framework of Hadamard manifolds, are presented.

Abstract:We consider optimal control problems, where the control appears in the main part of the operator. We derive the Pontryagin maximum principle as a necessary optimality condition. The proof uses the concept of topological derivatives. In contrast to earlier works, we do not need continuity assumptions for the coefficient or gradients of solutions of partial differential equations. Following classical proofs, we consider perturbations of optimal controls by multiples of characteristic functions of sets, whose scaling factor is send to zero. For problems, we can perform an optimization over the elliptic shapes of such sets leading to stronger optimality conditions involving a variational inequality of a new type.

Abstract:The necessity of a Maximum Principle arises naturally when one is interested in the study of qualitative properties of solutions to partial differential equations. In general, to ensure the validity of these kind of principles one has to consider some additional assumptions on the ambient manifold or on the differential operator. The present work aims to address, using both of these approaches, the problem of proving Maximum Principles for second order, elliptic operators acting on unbounded Riemannian domains under Dirichlet boundary conditions. Hence there is a natural division of this article in two distinct and standalone sections.

Abstract:Significance The Bôcher theorem for fractional Laplacian extends the classical Bôcher theorem with a unified proof that can be adapted in other situations. Our distributional approach reduces the regularity requirement and connects the Bôcher theorem directly with the corresponding maximum principles. These maximum principles derived are simple and basic with many potential applications.

Abstract:This article makes no claim to originality, other than, perhaps, the simple statement here called the {\it Abstract Maximum Principle}. Actually, the whole contents are strongly based on some H. Sussmann's and coauthors' papers, in which, in a much more general context, the set-separation approach is regarded as foundational for necessary conditions for minima. So, rather than being the exposition of original material, this paper has mainly a pedagogical purpose. From the Abstract Maximum Principle it is possible to deduce several necessary conditions for both finite dimensional minimum problems and for optimal control problems. More in general, this Principle seems apt to capture some consequences of the geometric and topological idea of (possibly vector-valued) minimization in a parametrized problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a generalized maximum principle for pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. As corollaries, Omori-Yau type maximum principles for pseudo-Hermitian manifolds are deduced. Moreover, we prove that the stochastic completeness for the heat semigroup generated by the sub-Laplacian is equivalent to the validity of a weak form of the generalized maximum principles. Finally, we give some applications of these generalized maximum principles.

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with the following fractional -Laplacian equations with the Hardy potential: where . Under some mild conditions on the nonlinearity , we establish the monotonicity and symmetry of positive solutions to the nonlinear equations involving the fractional -Laplacian with the Hardy potential in bounded domains. Moreover, we also prove a maximum principle along a sequence of approximate maximum points in unbounded domains. Our results are extensions of Chen and Li [4] and Dai, Liu and Wang [16].

Abstract:We consider nonsmooth optimal control problems subject to a linear elliptic partial differential equation with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. It is well-known that local solutions satisfy the celebrated Pontryagin maximum principle. In this note, we will investigate an optimization method that is based on the maximum principle. We prove that the discrepancy in the maximum principle vanishes along the resulting sequence of iterates. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical findings.
