Abstract:In this paper we describe some recent results on the geometry of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. We surveyed new and classical metrics on the moduli spaces of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces and their geometric properties. We then discussed the Mumford goodness and generalized goodness of various metrics on the moduli spaces and their deformation invariance. By combining with the dual Nakano negativity of the Weil-Petersson metric we derive various consequences such that the infinitesimal rigidity, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the log Chern number computations.

Abstract:A new model for biological growth is introduced that couples the geometry of an organism (or part of the organism) to the flow and deposition of material. The model has three dynamical variables (a) a Riemann metric tensor for the geometry, (b) a transport velocity of the material and (c) a material density. While the model was developed primarily to determine the effects of geometry (i.e. curvature and scale changes) in two-dimensional systems such as leaves and petals, it can be applied to any dimension. Results for one dimensional systems are presented and compared to measurements of growth made on blades of grass and corn roots. It is found that the model is able to reproduce many features associated with botanical growth.

Abstract:We extend to a theory of nonassociative geometric flows a string-inspired model of nonassociative gravity determined by star product and R-flux deformations. The nonassociative Ricci tensor and curvature scalar defined by (non) symmetric metric structures and generalized (non) linear connections are used for defining nonassociative versions of Grigori Perelman F- and W-functionals for Ricci flows and computing associated thermodynamic variables. We develop and apply the anholonomic frame and connection deformation method, AFCDM, which allows us to construct exact and parametric solutions describing nonassociative geometric flow evolution scenarios and modified Ricci soliton configurations with quasi-stationary generic off-diagonal metrics. There are provided explicit examples of solutions modelling geometric and statistical thermodynamic evolution on a temperature-like parameter of modified black hole configurations encoding nonassociative star-product and R-flux deformation data. Further perspectives of the paper are motivated by nonassociative off-diagonal geometric flow extensions of the swampland program, related conjectures and claims on geometric and physical properties of new classes of quasi-stationary Ricci flow and black hole solutions.

Abstract:In this paper we construct some natural geometrical objects on the 1-jet space J^1(R,R^3), like a nonlinear connection, a Cartan linear connection (together with its d-torsions and d-curvatures), a jet "electromagnetic" d-field and its geometric "electromagnetic" Yang-Mills energy, starting from a given dynamical system governing the three-dimensional motion of the knee in the mathematical model introduced by Grood and Suntay. The corresponding Yang-Mills energetic surfaces of constant level (produced by this knee dynamical system) are studied.

Riemannian L-systems: Modeling growing forms in curved spaces

Abstract:In the past 50 years, the formalism of L-systems has been successfully used and developed to model the growth of filamentous and branching biological forms. These simulations take place in classical 2-D or 3-D Euclidean spaces. However, various biological forms actually grow in curved, non-Euclidean, spaces. This is for example the case of vein networks growing within curved leaf blades, of unicellular filaments, such as pollen tubes, growing on curved surfaces to fertilize distant ovules, of teeth patterns growing on folded epithelia of animals, of diffusion of chemical or mechanical signals at the surface of plant or animal tissues, etc. To model these forms growing in curved spaces, we thus extended the formalism of L-systems to non-Euclidean spaces. In a first step we show that this extension can be carried out by integrating concepts of differential geometry in the notion of turtle geometry. We then illustrate how this extension can be applied to model and program the development of both mathematical and biological forms on curved surfaces embedded in our Euclidean space. We provide various examples applied to plant development. We finally show that this approach can be extended to more abstract spaces, called abstract Riemannian spaces, that are not embedded into any higher space, while being intrinsically curved. We suggest that this abstract extension can be used to provide a new approach for effective modeling of tropism phenomena and illustrate this idea on a few conceptual examples.

Abstract:It is shown that the physical interpretation of Elie Cartan three-dimensional space torsion as couple asymmetric stress, has the effect of damping, previously Riemannian unstable Couette planar shear flow, leading to stability of the flow in the Lagrangean sense. Actually, since the flow speed is inversely proportional to torsion, it has the effect of causing a damping in the planar flow atenuating the instability effect. In this sense we may say that Cartan torsion induces shear viscous asymmetric stresses in the fluid, which are able to damp the instability of the flow. The stability of the flow is computed from the sectional curvature in non-Riemannian three-dimensional manifold. Marginal stability is asssumed by making the sectional non-Riemannian curvature zero, which allows us to determine the speeds of flows able to induce this stability. The ideas discussed here show that torsion plays the geometrical role of magnetic field in hydromagnetic instability of Couette flows recently investigated by Bonnano and Urpin (PRE, (2007,in press) can be extended and applied to plastic flows with microstructure defects. Recently Riemannian asymmetric stresses in magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) have been considered by Billig (2004).

Abstract:In this paper, via the least squares variational method, we develop the Lagrange geometry (in the sense of nonlinear connection, d-torsions and the deviation curvature tensor) and the KCC theory for a given dynamical system. Further, a result on the Jacobi stability of the solutions of this dynamical system is also obtained.

Abstract:The Raychaudhuri equation for a congruence of curves in a general non-Riemannian geometry is derived. A formal connection is established between the expansion scalar and the cross-sectional volume of the congruence. It is found that the expansion scalar is equal to the fractional rate of change of volume, weighted by a scalar factor that depends on the non-Riemannian features of the geometry. Treating the congruence of curves as a dynamical system, an appropriate Lagrangian is derived such that the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equation is the Raychaudhuri equation. A Hamiltonian formulation and Poisson brackets are also presented.

Abstract:The paper aims to study the connection between symmetries and conservation laws for the 2D Ricci flow model. The procedure starts by obtaining a set of multipliers which generates conservation laws. Then, using a general relation which connects symmetries and conservation laws for whatever dynamical system, one determines symmetries related to a chosen multiplier. On this basis, new similarity solutions of the model, not yet discussed in literature, are highlighted.

Abstract:Presented is description of kinematics and dynamics of material points with internal degrees of freedom moving in a Riemannian manifold. The models of internal degrees of freedom we concentrate on are based on the orthogonal and affine groups. Roughly speaking, we consider infinitesimal gyroscopes and homogeneously deformable gyroscopes (affienly-rigid bodies) in curved manifolds. We follow our earlier models of extended rigid and affinely-rigid bodies moving in a flat space. It is well known that in curved spaces in general there is no well-defined concept of extended rigid or affinely-rigid body. Our infinitesimal models are mathematically well defined and physically they may be interpreted as an approximate description of "small" rigid and affinely-rigid bodies. We derive equations of motion and show how internal degrees of freedom interact with spatial geometry, first of all with the curvature but also with the torsion. Integrability and degeneracy problems are discussed.

Abstract:We are concerned with underlying connections between fluids, elasticity, isometric embedding of Riemannian manifolds, and the existence of wrinkled solutions of the associated nonlinear partial differential equations. In this paper, we develop such connections for the case of two spatial dimensions, and demonstrate that the continuum mechanical equations can be mapped into a corresponding geometric framework and the inherent direct application of the theory of isometric embeddings and the Gauss-Codazzi equations through examples for the Euler equations for fluids and the Euler-Lagrange equations for elastic solids. These results show that the geometric theory provides an avenue for addressing the admissibility criteria for nonlinear conservation laws in continuum mechanics.

Abstract:The Riemann-Hilbert approach, in conjunction with the canonical Wiener-Hopf factorisation of certain matrix functions called monodromy matrices, enables one to obtain explicit solutions to the non-linear field equations of some gravitational theories. These solutions are encoded in the elements of a matrix $M$ depending on the Weyl coordinates $\rho$ and $v$, determined by that factorisation. We address here, for the first time, the underlying question of what happens when a canonical Wiener-Hopf factorisation does not exist, using the close connection of Wiener-Hopf factorisation with Toeplitz operators to study this question. For the case of rational monodromy matrices, we prove that the non-existence of a canonical Wiener-Hopf factorisation determines curves in the $(\rho,v)$ plane on which some elements of $M(\rho,v)$ tend to infinity, but where the space-time metric may still be well behaved. In the case of uncharged rotating black holes in four space-time dimensions and, for certain choices of coordinates, in five space-time dimensions, we show that these curves correspond to their ergosurfaces.

Abstract:A homogeneous two-dimensional metric including the degrees of freedom of Teichmüller deformation is developed. The Teichmüller deformation is incorporated by affine stretching of complex structure. According to Yamada's investigation by pinching parameter, concrete formulation for a higher genus Riemann surface can be realized. We will have a homogeneous standard metric including the dynamical degrees of freedom as Teichmüller deformation in a leading order of the pinching parameter, which would be treated as homogeneous anisotropic metric for a double torus universe, which satisfy momentum constraints.

Abstract:We study the geometry underlying mechanics and its application to describe autonomous and nonautonomous conservative dynamical systems of different types; as well as dissipative dynamical systems. We use different geometric descriptions to study the main properties and characteristics of these systems; such as their Lagrangian, Hamiltonian and unified formalisms, their symmetries, the variational principles, and others. The study is done mainly for the regular case, although some comments and explanations about singular systems are also included.

Abstract:We construct a general effective dynamics for diffeomorphisms of spacetime, in a fixed external metric. Though related to familiar models of scalar fields as coordinates, our models have subtly different properties, both at kinematical and dynamical level. The energy-momentum tensor consists of two independently conserved parts. The background solution is the identity diffeomorphism and the energy-momentum tensor of this solution gives rise to an effective cosmological constant.

Abstract:We present a variety of geometrical and combinatorial tools that are used in the study of geometric structures on surfaces: volume, contact, symplectic, complex and almost complex structures. We start with a series of local rigidity results for such structures. Higher-dimensional analogues are also discussed. Some constructions with Riemann surfaces lead, by analogy, to notions that hold for arbitrary fields, and not only the field of complex numbers. The Riemann sphere is also defined using surjective homomorphisms of real algebras from the ring of real univariate polynomials to (arbitrary) fields, in which the field with one element is interpreted as the point at infinity of the Gaussian plane of complex numbers. Several models of the hyperbolic plane and hyperbolic 3-space appear, defined in terms of complex structures on surfaces, and in particular also a rather elementary construction of the hyperbolic plane usingreal monic univariate polynomials of degree two without real roots. Several notions and problems connected with conformal structures in dimension 2 are discussed, including dessins d'enfants, the combinatorial characterization of polynomials and rational maps of the sphere, the type problem, uniformization, quasiconformal mappings, Thurston's characterization of Speiser graphs, stratifications of spaces of monic polynomials, and others.
