Abstract:We prove that the $(p,q)$-cable of a non-trivial knot is not Floer homologically thin. Using this and a theorem of Ian Zemke in \cite{zemke}, we find a larger class of satellite knots, containing non-cable knots as well, which are not Floer homologically thin.

Abstract:If $A$, $B$, $C$ are subsets in a finite simple group of Lie type $G$ at least two of which are normal with $|A||B||C|$ relatively large, then we establish a stronger conclusion than $ABC = G$. This is related to a theorem of Gowers and is a generalization of a theorem of Larsen, Shalev, Tiep and the second author and Pyber.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a nontrivial knot in $S^{3}$ and $t(K)$ its tunnel number. For any $(p\geq 2,q)$-slope in the torus boundary of a closed regular neighborhood of $ K$ in $S^{3}$, denoted by $K^{\star}$, it is a nontrivial cable knot in $S^{3}$. Though $t(K^{\star})\leq t(K)+1$, Example 1.1 in Section 1 shows that in some case, $ t(K^{\star})\leq t(K)$. So it is interesting to know when $t(K^{\star})= t(K)+1$. After using some combinatorial techniques, we prove that (1) for any nontrivial cable knot $K^{\star}$ and its companion $K$, $t(K^{\star})\geq t(K)$; (2) if either $K$ admits a high distance Heegaard splitting or $p/q$ is far away from a fixed subset in the Farey graph, then $t(K^{\star})= t(K)+1$. Using the second conclusion, we construct a satellite knot and its companion so that the difference between their tunnel numbers is arbitrary large.

Let us define a directed graph $\Gamma(G)$, the set of vertices of this graph is $N(G)$ and the vertices $x$ and $y$ are connected by a directed edge from $x$ to $y$ if $x$ divides $y$ and $N(G)$ does not contain a number $z$ different from $x$ and $y$ such that $x$ divides $z$ and $z$ divides $y$. We will call the graph $\Gamma(G)$ the conjugate graph of the group $G$. In this work, we will study finite groups whose conjugate graph is a set of points.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group, $p$ a prime, and $k$ a field of characteristic $p$. We introduce the notion of an endotrivial chain complex of $p$-permutation $kG$-modules, which are the invertible objects in the bounded homotopy category of $p$-permutation $kG$-modules, and study the corresponding Picard group $\mathcal{E}_k(G)$ of endotrivial complexes. Such complexes are shown to induce splendid Rickard autoequivalences of $kG$. The elements of $\mathcal{E}_k(G)$ are determined uniquely by integral invariants arising from the Brauer construction and a degree one character $G \to k^\times$. Using ideas from Bouc's theory of biset functors, we provide a canonical decomposition of $\mathcal{E}_k(G)$, and as an application, give complete descriptions of $\mathcal{E}_k(G)$ for abelian groups and $p$-groups of normal $p$-rank 1. Taking Lefschetz invariants of endotrivial complexes induces a group homomorphism $\Lambda: \mathcal{E}_k(G) \to O(T(kG))$, where $O(T(kG))$ is the orthogonal unit group of the trivial source ring. Using recent results of Boltje and Carman, we give a Frobenius stability condition elements in the image of $\Lambda$ must satisfy.

A note on cables and the involutive concordance invariants

Abstract:We prove a formula for the involutive concordance invariants of the cabled knots in terms of that of the companion knot and the pattern knot. As a consequence, we show that any iterated cable of a knot with parameters of the form (odd,1) is not smoothly slice as long as either of the involutive concordance invariants of the knot is nonzero. Our formula also gives new bounds for the unknotting number of a cabled knot, which are sometimes stronger than other known bounds coming from knot Floer homology.

$G$-kernels of Kirchberg algebras

Abstract:A $G$-kernel is a group homomorphism from a group $G$ to the outer automorphism group of a C$^*$-algebra. Inspired by recent work of Evington and Girón Pacheco in the stably finite case, we introduce a new invariant of a $G$-kernel using $K$-theory, and deduce several new constraints of the obstruction classes of $G$-kernels in the purely infinite case. We classify $\mathbb{Z}^n$-kernels for strongly self-absorbing Kirchberg algebras in the bootstrap category in terms of our new invariant and the Dadarlat-Pennig theory of continuous fields of strongly self-absorbing C$^*$-algebras.

Iterated satellite operators on the knot concordance group

Abstract:We show that for a winding number zero satellite operator $P$ on the knot concordance group, if the axis of $P$ has nontrivial self-pairing under the Blanchfield form of the pattern, then the image of the iteration $P^n$ generates an infinite rank subgroup for each $n$. Furthermore, the graded quotients of the filtration of the knot concordance group associated with $P$ have infinite rank at all levels. This gives an affirmative answer to a question of Hedden and Pinzón-Caicedo in many cases. We also show that under the same hypotheses, $P^n$ is not a homomorphism on the knot concordance group for each $n$. We use amenable $L^2$-signatures to prove these results.

Abstract:Recent constructions have shown that interesting behaviours can be observed in the finiteness properties of Kähler groups and their subgroups. In this work, we push this further and exhibit, for each integer $k$, new hyperbolic groups admiting surjective homomorphisms to $\mathbb{Z}$ and to $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$, whose kernel is of type $\mathscr{F}_{k}$ but not of type $\mathscr{F}_{k+1}$. By a fibre product construction, we also find examples of nonnormal subgroups of Kähler groups with exotic finiteness properties.

Abstract:Previous work of the authors establishes a criterion on the fundamental group of a knot complement that determines when Dehn surgery on the knot will have a fundamental group that is not left-orderable. We provide a refinement of this criterion by introducing the notion of a decayed knot; it is shown that Dehn surgery on decayed knots produces surgery manifolds that have non-left-orderable fundamental group for all sufficiently positive surgeries. As an application, we prove that sufficiently positive cables of decayed knots are always decayed knots. These results mirror properties of L-space surgeries in the context of Heegaard Floer homology.

On Knotted Subgroups

Abstract:In this article, we defined a knotted subgroup of a Lie group and considered a geometric notion of equivalence among them. We characterized these knotted subgroups in terms of one-parameter subgroups and provided examples in the case of SU(2) and SU(3). Infinitesimal elements that give rise to knotted subgroups of SU(n) and SO(n) are characterized as well. Canonical forms for their knotted subgroups are presented and their properties are described in terms of the spectrum of the corresponding infinitesimal elements. Finally, knotted subgroups of SL(2,R) are completely classified using direct computation while knotted subgroups of SL(3,R) are completely classified using Jordan canonical forms.

Abstract:Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications, Ahead of Print. Several distinct Garside monoids having torus knot groups as groups of fractions are known. For [math] two coprime integers, we introduce a new Garside monoid [math] having as Garside group the [math]-torus knot group, thereby generalizing to all torus knot groups a construction that we previously gave for the [math]-torus knot group. As a byproduct, we obtain new Garside structures for the braid groups of a few exceptional complex reflection groups of rank two. Analogous Garside structures are also constructed for a few additional braid groups of exceptional complex reflection groups of rank two which are not isomorphic to torus knot groups, namely, for [math] and for dihedral Artin groups of even type.

Abstract:Recently, the author discovered an interesting class of knot-like objects called free knots. These purely combinatorial objects are equivalence classes of Gauss diagrams modulo Reidemeister moves (the same notion in the language of words was introduced by Turaev, who thought all free knots to be trivial). As it turned out, these new objects are highly non-trivial, and even admit non-trivial cobordism classes. An important issue is the existence of invariants where a diagram evaluates to itself which makes such objects "similar" to free groups: an element has its minimal representative which "lives inside" any representative equivalent to it.

Abstract:Graph coverings are known to induce surjections of their critical groups. Here we describe the kernels of these morphisms in terms of data parametrizing the covering. Regular coverings are parametrized by voltage graphs, and the above kernel can be identified with a naturally defined voltage graph critical group. For double covers, the voltage graph is a signed graph, and the theory takes a particularly pleasant form, leading also to a theory of double covers of signed graphs.

Abstract:In this short note, the second dual of generalized group algebra equipped with both Arens product is investigated, where G is any discrete group and is a Banach algebra containing a complemented algebraic copy of . We give an explicit family of annihilators(w.r.t both the Arens product) in the algebra , arising from non-principal ultrafilters on and which are not in the toplogical center. As a consequence, we also deduce the fact that is not Strongly Arens irregular.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group acting faithfully on a finite set $\Omega$. For a positive integer $k$, $G$ acts naturally on the Catesian product $\Omega^k := \Omega \times ...\times \Omega$.
