Unique quantum impurity states driven by a vortex in topological superconductors

Abstract: The interplay of magnetic impurity and vortex in a topological superconductor is of fundamental interest with major implications for implementing quantum computation. There are multiple degrees of freedom interacting with the impurity in the system, including the Majorana zero mode (MZM), the Caroli de Gennes Matricon (CdGM) states, and the electron bulk states that form Cooper pairs, which makes the impurity pinned vortex state elusive to date in topological superconductors. Here, we present an accurate solution of the problem, based on a generalized mapping scheme and the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. We identify in-gap states that are distinct from the established Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states. The newly found in-gap physics is driven by three prominent mechanisms: (i) the coupling of impurity and bulk states leading to competition between Kondo screening and Cooper pairing, resulting in a singlet-doublet quantum phase transition, (ii) the coupling of impurity and CdGM states introducing an effective Zeeman splitting to the doublet state, and (iii) the coupling of impurity and MZM turning the singlet-doublet transition into a crossover. These mechanisms cooperatively produce a unique spin-resolved local density of states. Despite the MZM, a robust nearly zero-energy peak is generated, with comparable height but opposite spin polarization as that of the MZM. These results signify novel emergent physics and offer insights to elucidate intriguing experimental phenomena.

Abstract:A family of spin–orbit coupled honeycomb Mott insulators offers a playground to search for quantum spin liquids (QSLs) via bond-dependent interactions. In candidate materials, a symmetric off-diagonal Γ term, close cousin of Kitaev interaction, has emerged as another source of frustration that is essential for complete understanding of these systems. However, the ground state of honeycomb Γ model remains elusive, with a suggested zigzag magnetic order. Here we attempt to resolve the puzzle by perturbing the Γ region with a staggered Heisenberg interaction which favours the zigzag ordering. Despite such favour, we find a wide disordered region inclusive of the Γ limit in the phase diagram. Further, this phase exhibits a vanishing energy gap, a collapse of excitation spectrum, and a logarithmic entanglement entropy scaling on long cylinders, indicating a gapless QSL. Other quantities such as plaquette-plaquette correlation are also discussed.
Generation of high-fidelity Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states in a driven hybrid quantum system

Abstract:In this study, we propose a theoretical scheme for achieving long-distance Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states in a driven hybrid quantum system. By applying a microwave field to the YIG sphere, we utilize the Kerr effect to induce the squeezing of the magnon, thereby achieving an exponential enhancement of the coupling strength between the magnonic mode and spins, and we also discuss in detail the relationship between the squeezing parameter and the external microwave field. By means of the Schrieffer-Wolff transformation, the magnonic mode can be adiabatically eliminated under the large detuning condition, thereby establishing a robust effective interaction between spins essential for realizing the desired entangled state. Numerical simulations indicate that the squeezing parameter can be effectively increased by adjusting the driving field, and our proposal can generate high-fidelity Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states even in dissipative systems. Additionally, we extensively discuss the influence of inhomogeneous broadening on the entangled states, and the experimental feasibility shows that our results provide possibilities in the realms of quantum networking and quantum computing.

Abstract:Non-Abelian defects that bind Majorana or parafermion zero modes are prominent in several topological quantum computation schemes. Underpinning their established understanding is the quantum Ising spin chain, which can be recast as a fermionic model or viewed as a standalone effective theory for the surface-code edge -- both of which harbor non-Abelian defects. We generalize these notions by deriving an effective Ising-like spin chain describing the edge of quantum-double topological order. Relating Majorana and parafermion modes to anyonic strings, we introduce quantum-double generalizations of non-Abelian defects. We develop a way to embed finite-group valued qunits into those valued in continuous groups. Using this embedding, we provide a continuum description of the spin chain and recast its non-interacting part as a quantum wire via addition of a Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten term and non-Abelian bosonization.

Parallel quantum operations with chiral spin states in a superconducting circuit

Abstract:Recently it was shown that mesoscopic superpositions of photonic states can be prepared based on a spin-gated chiral photon rotation in a Fock-state lattice of three cavities coupled to a spin (two-level atom). By exchanging the roles of the cavities and the spin, we have performed parallel operations on chiral spin states based on an antisymmetric spin exchange interaction (ASI) in a superconducting circuit. The ASI, which is also called Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, plays an important role in the formation of topological spin textures such as skyrmions. By periodically modulating the transition frequencies of three superconducting qubits interacting with a bus resonator, we synthesize a chiral ASI Hamiltonian with spin-gated chiral dynamics, which allow us to demonstrate a three-spin chiral logic gate and entangle up to five qubits in Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states. Our results pave the way for quantum simulation of magnetism with ASI and quantum computation with chiral spin states.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose the quantum spin pumping in quantum spin systems where an applied electric field (E) and magnetic field (H) cause a finite spin gap to its critical ground state. When these systems are Subject to alternating electromangetic fields; (E, H) = (sin 2 pi t/T, cos 2 pi t/T) and travel along the loop Gamma(loop) which encloses their critical ground state in this E-H phase diagram, the locking potential in the sine-Gordon model slides and changes its minimum. As a result, the phase operator acquires 2 pi holonomy during one cycle along Gamma(loop), which means that the quantized spin current has been transported through the bulk systems during this adiabatic process. The relevance to real systems such as Cu-benzoate and Yb4As3 is also discussed.

Abstract:We propose a general and tunable platform to realize high-density arrays of quantum spin-valley Hall kink (QSVHK) states with spin-valley-momentum locking based on a two-dimensional hexagonal topological insulator. Through the analysis of Berry curvature and topological charge, the QSVHK states are found to be topologically protected by the valley-inversion and time-reversal symmetries. Remarkably, the conductance of QSVHK states remains quantized against either nonmagnetic or long-range magnetic disorder, verified by the Green function calculations. Based on first-principles results, we show that QSVHK states, protected with a gap up to 287 meV, can be realized in bismuthene by alloy engineering, surface functionalization, or electric field, supporting non-volatile applications of spin-valley filters, valves, and waveguides even at room temperature.

Abstract:Generating Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states of solid-state spins is of great significance for quantum metrology and quantum error correction. We propose here an efficient scheme for generating high fidelity GHZ states in a solid-state setup where multiple silicon-vacancy (SiV) centers are embedded in a quasi-onedimensional acoustic diamond waveguide. The lattice distortion gives rise to a strong strain coupling between the orbital degree of freedom of SiV centers and the continuum phonon modes. Due to the permutation symmetry, we can take advantage of the decoherence-free subspace to avoid dissipation. Under the quantum Zeno regime, two control fields are used to achieve a ladderlike coupling structure in decoherence-free subspace along with an off-resonant two-photon Raman transition process. We calculate the pulse sequences for N = 4 and at the same time analyze the effect of different collective decay rates. Moreover, we consider the disorder in the imperfect position of SiV centers and the inhomogeneous strain coupling. This paper may provide a feasible protocol for the generation of GHZ states in a solid-state system.

Abstract:We investigate the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on kagome lattice, making use of the variational Monte Carlo technique. An exotic quantum spin state is found to arise from a melting of the $\boldsymbol{Q} = 0$ long-range magnetic order by a topological transition, when a small anisotropic third nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction is turned on. This novel state is a gapped quantum spin liquid, characterized by a topological order with ground-state degeneracy $n_g = 4$ and topological entanglement entropy $\gamma = \ln 2$, suggesting it is an Abelian topological phase. Furthermore, the Chern numbers of the spin-up (-down) spinon occupied bands of this state are $C_{\uparrow \downarrow} = \pm 1$, respectively. From this perspective, this state is also a time-reversal symmetric (total Chern number $C_{total} = 0$) topological insulator with spinons as the chiral edge states, which carry opposite spin and move in the opposite direction. It is analogous to the quantum spin Hall state but the spin current is carried by deconfined spinons in a quantum spin liquid, so is dubbed as the spinon quantum spin Hall state.

$\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field and topological chirality from Umklapp scattering in twisted graphite

Abstract:Spinless systems exhibit unique topological characteristics compared to spinful ones, stemming from their distinct algebra. Without chiral interactions typically linked to spin, an intriguing yet unexplored interplay between topological and structural chirality may be anticipated. Here we show examples of spinless topological chirality solely from structural chirality in two types of twisted graphite. In a 3D helical structure, we find a chiral Weyl semimetal phase where bulk topology and chiral surface states are both determined by the screw direction. And in a 3D periodic structure formed with alternating twisting angle signs, a higher-order Dirac semimetal with chiral hinge states is discovered. Underlying these novel topological states is the Umklapp scattering that captures the chirality of the twisted interfaces, leading effectively to a sign-flipped chiral interlayer hopping, thereby introducing $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge field that alters the symmetry algebra. Our findings point to a new pathway for engineering topological chirality.

Sequential Adiabatic Generation of Chiral Topological States

Abstract:In previous work, it was shown that non-trivial gapped states can be generated from a product state using a sequential quantum circuit. Explicit circuit constructions were given for a variety of gapped states at exactly solvable fixed points. In this paper, we show that a similar generation procedure can be established for chiral topological states as well, despite the fact that they lack an exactly solvable form. Instead of sequentially applying local unitary gates, we sequentially evolve the Hamiltonian by changing local terms in one subregion and then the next. The Hamiltonian remains gapped throughout the process, giving rise to an adiabatic evolution mapping the ground state from a product state to a chiral topological state. We demonstrate such a sequential adiabatic generation process for free fermion chiral states like the Chern Insulator and the $p+ip$ superconductor. Moreover, we show that coupling a quantum state to a discrete gauge group can be achieved through a sequential quantum circuit, thereby generating interacting chiral topological states from the free fermion ones.

Abstract:We propose an efficient scheme to build an arbitrary multipartite Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state and discriminate all the universal Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states using parity measurement based on dipole-induced transparency in a cavity-waveguide system. A prominent advantage is that initial entangled states remain after nondetective identification and they can be used for successive tasks. We analyze the performance and possible errors of the required single-qubit rotations and emphasize that the scheme is reliable and can satisfy the current experimental technology.
Maximized String Order Parameters in the Valence Bond Solid States of Quantum Integer Spin Chains

Abstract:We propose a set of maximized string order parameters to describe the hidden topological order in the valence bond solid states of quantum integer spin-S chains. These optimized string order parameters involve spin-twist angles corresponding to Z_S+1 rotations around z or x-axes, suggesting a hidden Z_S+1× Z_S+1 symmetry. Our results also suggest that a local triplet excitation in the valence bond solid states carries a Z_S+1 topological charge measured by these maximized string order parameters.

Abstract:A recent major technological breakthrough in superconducting circuits is the realization of more than 50 qubits arranged on two-dimensional (2D) lattices with tunable nearest-neighbor couplings. We propose a protocol to generate Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states on 2D superconducting-qubit lattices by applying multiqubit controlled- i swap gates in parallel. The multiqubit gate can be naturally implemented based on an effective three-body interaction, which can be synthesized with appropriate detunings and coupling strengths between qubits. We simulate the preparation process of GHZ states with realistic parameters, and show a 37 -qubit GHZ state can be generated with a controlled- i swap depth of 3 . Our proposal provides a more promising method of generating GHZ states on the latest 2D superconducting-qubit architectures and will stimulate the preparation of multiqubit entangled states based on multiqubit gates. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.18.064036 © 2022 American Physical Society

Generalized phantom helix states in quantum spin graphs

Abstract:In general, the summation of a set of sub-Hamiltonians cannot share a common eigenstate of each one, only if it is an unentangled product state, such as a phantom helix state in quantum spin system. Here we present a method, referred to as the building block method (BBM), for constructing possible spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg lattice systems possessing phantom helix states. We focus on two types of XXZ dimers as basic elements, with a non-Hermitian parity-time (PT ) field and Hermitian Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), which share the same degenerate eigenstates. Based on these two building blocks, one can construct a variety of Heisenberg quantum spin systems, which support helix states with zero energy. The underlying mechanism is the existence of a set of degenerate eigenstates. Furthermore, we show that such systems act as quantum spin graphs since they obey the analogs of Kirchhoff's laws for sets of spin helix states when the non-Hermitian PT fields cancel each other out. In addition, the dynamic response of the helix states for three types of perturbations is also investigated analytically and numerically. Our findings provide a way to study quantum spin systems with irregular geometries beyond the Bethe ansatz approach.

Two-orbital Schwinger Boson Representation of Spin-One: Application to a Non-abelian Spin Liquid with Quaternion Gauge Field

Abstract:A non-abelian spin liquid in triangular lattice spin-1 systems was recently formulated in the form of continuum field theory [T. Grover, and T. Senthil, Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 077203 (2011); Cenke Xu, A.W.W. Ludwig, arXiv:1012.5671]. It has spin-1/2 bosonic spinons coupled to emergent quaternion gauge fields, and can be obtained by quantum disordering a non-collinear spin nematic order hypothesized to describe NiGa_2S_4 [H. Tsunetsugu, and M. Arikawa, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 75, 083701 (2006)], However a microscopic lattice description, e.g. the lattice spinon (mean-field) Hamiltonian and the spin wavefunction, has been missing, and it has been noted that the standard Schwinger boson or bosonic triplon representations of spin-1 cannot describe this spin liquid. In this paper a two-orbital Schwinger boson representation for spin-1 systems is developed and used to construct a mean-field description of this quaternion spin liquid. Projecting the mean-field state produces a prototype wavefunction, which is a superposition of close-packed AKLT loop configurations with nontrivial amplitudes. This new formalism and related wavefunctions may be generalized to higher spin systems and can possibly produce spin liquid states with even richer emergent gauge structures.
