As a corollary we prove linear growth in all dimensions d when the particle density is at least 1.

Abstract:We consider a stochastic aggregation model on Z^d. Start with particles located at the vertices of the lattice, initially distributed according to the product Bernoulli measure with parameter \mu. In addition, there is an aggregate, which initially consists of the origin. Non-aggregated particles move as continuous time simple random walks obeying the exclusion rule, whereas aggregated particles do not move. The aggregate grows by attaching particles to its surface whenever a particle attempts to jump onto it. This evolution is referred to as multi-particle diffusion limited aggregation. Our main result states that if on d>1 the initial density of particles is large enough, then with positive probability the aggregate has linearly growing arms, i.e. if F(t) denotes the point of the aggregate furthest away from the origin at time t>0, then there exists a constant c>0 so that |F(t)|>ct, for all t eventually. The key conceptual element of our analysis is the introduction and study of a new growth process. Consider a first passage percolation process, called type 1, starting from the origin. Whenever type 1 is about to occupy a new vertex, with positive probability, instead of doing it, it gives rise to another first passage percolation process, called type 2, which starts to spread from that vertex. Each vertex gets occupied only by the process that arrives to it first. This process may have three phases: an extinction phase, where type 1 gets eventually surrounded by type 2 clusters, a coexistence phase, where infinite clusters of both types emerge, and a strong survival phase, where type 1 produces an infinite cluster that successfully surrounds all type 2 clusters. Understanding the behavior of this process in its various phases is of mathematical interest on its own right. We establish the existence of a strong survival phase, and use this to show our main result.

Abstract:Many pathways for the synthesis of novel materials involve aggregation processes that occur in the presence of diffusion barriers and spatially nonuniform kinetics (i.e., the ratio of the timescales of diffusion and reaction depends on the cluster size). In this study, we simulate clusters that grow by diffusion and spatially nonhomogeneous kinetics on two-dimensional square lattices. The influence of nonuniform kinetics on the fractal dimension, particle density distribution, and average diffusion path length is investigated. It is found that if the simulations are performed for a sufficiently long time, the fractal dimension and packing density are not significantly influenced. Specifically, the decrease in the fractal dimension and the increase in the packing density as compared to their values in the case of diffusion-limited aggregation are relatively small. However, the effective diffusion path length prior to attachment is significantly enhanced, especially for smaller cluster sizes. The implications of these observations for particle aggregation processes are discussed.

Abstract:We calculate the minimum growth probability for diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) as a function of the cluster mass M, and find a novel singularity of the form-ln p min (M)∼(lnM) y with y≊ 2. We interpret this result in terms of a simple model for DLA structure, which is characterized by a hierarchy of self-similar voids separated by channels whose diameter increases slower than the cluster diameter.

Abstract:Software simulating nanoparticle aggregation was built on MATLAB platform and the effect of diffuse double layer on aggregation was studied based on diffusion limited clusters aggregation (DLCA) model. The aggregation rate and cluster size distribution were investigated when layer thickness is 0, 2, 5 times of particle diameter, respectively. Simulation shows that the aggregation rate slows down sharply with the increase of layer thickness. The hindrance intensity reaches maximum when cluster size and layer thickness are in the same magnitude. Since the effective region of the electrostatic repulsion of the cluster is restricted in the thickness of the double layer, around the large cluster a stronger protective electric field proportional to its mass is not formed. So it is easier for larger cluster to overcome the obstacle of electric repulsion. The fractal dimension of aggregates reduces slowly with the increase of layer thickness. It manifests that the diffuse double layer prevents particles and small clusters from moving into inner space of large clusters although the strength is less than that of normal electric field.

Abstract:For a class of aggregation models on the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d\geq 2$, in which clusters are formed by particles arriving one after the other and sticking irreversibly where they first hit the cluster, including the classical model of diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA), we study the growth of the clusters. We observe that a method of Kesten used to obtain an almost sure upper bound on the radial growth in the DLA model generalizes to a large class of such models. We use it in particular to prove such a bound for the so-called ballistic model, in which the arriving particles travel along straight lines. Our bound implies that the fractal dimension of ballistic aggregation clusters in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ is 2, which proves a long standing conjecture in the physics literature.

Abstract:Models of fractal growth commonly consider particles diffusing in a medium and that stick irreversibly to the forming aggregate when making contact for the first time. As shown by the well-known diffusion limited aggregation (DLA) model and its generalisations, the fractal dimension is sensitive to the nature of the stochastic motion of the particles. Here, we study the structures formed by finite-lived Brownian particles, i.e., particles constrained to find the aggregate within a prescribed time, and which are removed otherwise. This motion can be modelled by diffusion with stochastic resetting, a class of processes which has been widely studied in recent years. In the short lifetime limit, a very small fraction of the particles manage to reach the aggregate. Hence, growth is controlled by atypical Brownian trajectories, that move nearly in straight line according to a large deviation principle. In $d$ dimensions, the resulting fractal dimension of the aggregate decreases from the DLA value and tends to 1, instead of increasing to $d$ as expected from ballistic aggregation. In the zero lifetime limit one recovers the non-trivial model of "aggregation by the tips" proposed long ago by R. Jullien [J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 19, 2129 (1986)].

Abstract:A diffusion-limited aggregation process, in which clusters coalesce by means of 3-particle reaction, A+A+A->A, is investigated. In one dimension we give a heuristic argument that predicts logarithmic corrections to the mean-field asymptotic behavior for the concentration of clusters of mass $m$ at time $t$, $c(m,t)~m^{-1/2}(log(t)/t)^{3/4}$, for $1 << m << \sqrt{t/log(t)}$. The total concentration of clusters, $c(t)$, decays as $c(t)~\sqrt{log(t)/t}$ at $t --> \infty$. We also investigate the problem with a localized steady source of monomers and find that the steady-state concentration $c(r)$ scales as $r^{-1}(log(r))^{1/2}$, $r^{-1}$, and $r^{-1}(log(r))^{-1/2}$, respectively, for the spatial dimension $d$ equal to 1, 2, and 3. The total number of clusters, $N(t)$, grows with time as $(log(t))^{3/2}$, $t^{1/2}$, and $t(log(t))^{-1/2}$ for $d$ = 1, 2, and 3. Furthermore, in three dimensions we obtain an asymptotic solution for the steady state cluster-mass distribution: $c(m,r) \sim r^{-1}(log(r))^{-1}\Phi(z)$, with the scaling function $\Phi(z)=z^{-1/2}\exp(-z)$ and the scaling variable $z ~ m/\sqrt{log(r)}$.

Abstract:We study internal diffusion limited aggregation on $\mathbb{Z}$, where a cluster is grown by sequentially adding the first site outside the cluster visited by each random walk dispatched from the origin. We assume that the increment distribution $X$ of the driving random walks has $\mathbb{E} X =0$, but may be neither simple nor symmetric, and can have $\mathbb{E} (X^2) = \infty$, for example. For the case where $\mathbb{E} (X^2) < \infty$, we prove that after $m$ walks have been dispatched, all but $o(m)$ sites in the cluster form an approximately symmetric contiguous block around the origin. This extends known results for simple random walk. On the other hand, if~$X$ is in the domain of attraction of a symmetric $\alpha$-stable law, $1 < \alpha <2$, we prove that the cluster contains a contiguous block of $\delta m +o(m)$ sites, where $0 < \delta < 1$, but, unlike the finite-variance case, one may not take $\delta=1$.

Growth of Stationary Hastings-Levitov

Abstract:We construct and study a stationary version of the Hastings-Levitov$(0)$ model. We prove that, unlike in the classical HL$(0)$ model, in the stationary case the size of particles attaching to the aggregate is tight, and therefore SHL$(0)$ is proposed as a potential candidate for a stationary off-lattice variant of Diffusion Limited Aggregation (DLA). The stationary setting, together with a geometric interpretation of the harmonic measure, yields new geometric results such as stabilization, finiteness of arms and arm size distribution. We show that, under appropriate scaling, arms in SHL$(0)$ converge to the graph of Brownian motion which has fractal dimension $3/2$. Moreover we show that trees with $n$ particles reach a height of order $n^{2/3}$, corresponding to a numerical prediction of Meakin from 1983 for the gyration radius of DLA growing on a long line segment.

Abstract:We study the dynamic scaling properties of an aggregation model in which particles obey both diffusive and driven ballistic dynamics. The diffusion constant and the velocity of a cluster of size $s$ follow $D(s) \sim s^\gamma$ and $v(s) \sim s^\delta$, respectively. We determine the dynamic exponent and the phase diagram for the asymptotic aggregation behavior in one dimension in the presence of mixed dynamics. The asymptotic dynamics is dominated by the process that has the largest dynamic exponent with a crossover that is located at $\delta = \gamma - 1$. The cluster size distributions scale similarly in all cases but the scaling function depends continuously on $\gamma$ and $\delta$. For the purely diffusive case the scaling function has a transition from exponential to algebraic behavior at small argument values as $\gamma$ changes sign whereas in the drift dominated case the scaling function decays always exponentially.

Abstract:Using off-lattice noise reduction it is possible to estimate the asymptotic properties of diffusion-limited aggregation clusters grown in three dimensions with greater accuracy than would otherwise be possible. The fractal dimension of these aggregates is found to be 2.50 +/- 0.01, in agreement with earlier studies, and the asymptotic value of the relative penetration depth is 0.122 +/- 0.002. The multipole powers of the growth measure also exhibit universal asymptotes. The fixed point noise reduction is estimated to be \epsilon = 0.0035 meaning that large clusters can be identified with a low noise regime. The slowest correction to scaling exponents are measured for a number of properties of the clusters, and the exponent for the relative penetration depth and quadrupole moment are found to be significantly different from each other. The relative penetration depth exhibits the slowest correction to scaling of all quantities, which is consistent with a theoretical result derived in two dimensions.

Abstract:In the classical model of Diffusion Limited Aggregation (DLA), introduced by Witten and Sander, the process begins with a single particle cluster placed at the origin of a space, and then, one at a time, particles make a random walk from infinity until they collide with, and stick to, the existing cluster. We consider an analogous version of this process on large but finite graphs with a designated source and sink vertex. Initially the cluster of halted particles contains a single particle at the sink vertex. Starting one at a time from the source, each particle makes a random walk in the direction of the sink vertex. The particle halts at the last unoccupied vertex before the walk enters the cluster for the first time, thus increasing the size of the cluster. This continues until the source vertex becomes occupied, at which point the process ends. We study the DLA process on several classes of layered graphs, including Cayley trees of branching factor at least two with a sink vertex attached to the leaves. We determine the finish time of the process for a given class of graphs and show that the subcomponent of the final cluster linking source to sink is essentially a unique path.

Abstract:Given a large ensemble of interacting particles, driven by nonlocal interactions and localized repulsion, the mean-field limit leads to a class of nonlocal, nonlinear partial differential equations known as aggregation-diffusion equations. Over the past fifteen years, aggregation-diffusion equations have become widespread in biological applications and have also attracted significant mathematical interest, due to their competing forces at different length scales. These competing forces lead to rich dynamics, including symmetrization, stabilization, and metastability, as well as sharp dichotomies separating well-posedness from finite time blowup. In the present work, we review known analytical results for aggregation-diffusion equations and consider singular limits of these equations, including the slow diffusion limit, which leads to the constrained aggregation equation, as well as localized aggregation and vanishing diffusion limits, which lead to metastability behavior. We also review the range of numerical methods available for simulating solutions, with special attention devoted to recent advances in deterministic particle methods. We close by applying such a method -- the blob method for diffusion -- to showcase key properties of the dynamics of aggregation-diffusion equations and related singular limits.

Abstract:We generalize the diffusion-limited aggregation by issuing many randomly-walking particles, which stick to a cluster at the discrete time unit providing its growth. Using simple combinatorial arguments we determine probabilities of different growth scenarios and prove that the most probable evolution is governed by the deterministic Laplacian growth equation. A potential-theoretical analysis of the growth probabilities reveals connections with the tau-function of the integrable dispersionless limit of the two-dimensional Toda hierarchy, normal matrix ensembles, and the two-dimensional Dyson gas confined in a non-uniform magnetic field. We introduce the time-dependent Hamiltonian, which generates transitions between different classes of equivalence of closed curves, and prove the Hamiltonian structure of the interface dynamics. Finally, we propose a relation between probabilities of growth scenarios and the semi-classical limit of certain correlation functions of "light" exponential operators in the Liouville conformal field theory on a pseudosphere.

Abstract:Internal diffusion-limited aggregation is a growth model based on random walk in Z^d. We study how the shape of the aggregate depends on the law of the underlying walk, focusing on a family of walks in Z^2 for which the limiting shape is a diamond. Certain of these walks -- those with a directional bias toward the origin -- have at most logarithmic fluctuations around the limiting shape. This contrasts with the simple random walk, where the limiting shape is a disk and the best known bound on the fluctuations, due to Lawler, is a power law. Our walks enjoy a uniform layering property which simplifies many of the proofs.

Abstract:We investigate the one- and two-dimensional diffusion limited reactions A + A → 0 and A + B → 0 with A active Janus particles and B passive particles in thermal equilibrium. We show that by increasing the self-propulsion time of the A particles, the reactant densities decay faster, at least for time transients of potential interest for chemical applications, e.g., to develop smart drug delivery protocols. Asymptotic and transient density decays obey power laws with exponents that depend on the actual annihilation reaction and its dimensionality.
Nucleation, Growth, and Coarsening -- A Global View on Aggregation

Abstract:We present a new model of homogeneous aggregation that contains the essential physical ideas of the classical predecessors, the Becker-Doring and Lifshitz-Slyovoz models. These classical models, which give different predictions, are asymptotic limits of the new model at small and large cluster sizes (respectively). Since the new theory is valid for large and small clusters, it allows for a complete description of the nucleation process; predicting the Zeldovich nucleation rate, and the diffusion limited growth of large clusters. By retaining the physically valid ingredients from both models, we can explain the seeming incompatibilities and arbitrary choices of the classical models. We solve the equations of our new model asymptotically in the small super-saturation limit. The solution exhibits three successive `eras': nucleation, growth, and coarsening, each with its specific scales of time and cluster size. During the nucleation era, the bulk of the clusters are formed by favorable fluctuations over a free energy barrier, according to the analysis by Zeldovich. During the Growth era no new clusters are created, and the expansion of the existing ones continues. Eventually the coarsening era begins. During this competitive attrition process, smaller clusters dissolve and fuel the further growth of the larger survivors. By resolving the preceding creation and growth eras, our analysis gives explicitly the characteristic time and cluster size of the coarsening era, and a unique selection of the long time, self-similar cluster size distribution.

Abstract:We investigate the evolution of a population of non-interacting particles which undergo diffusion and multiplication. Diffusion is assumed to be homogeneous, while multiplication proceeds with different rates reflecting the distribution of nutrients. We focus on the situation where the distribution of nutrients is a stationary quenched random variable, and show that the population exhibits a super-exponential growth whenever the nutrient distribution is unbounded. We elucidate a huge difference between the average and typical asymptotic growths and emphasize the role played by the spatial correlations in the nutrient distribution.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct an infinite stationary diffusion limited aggregation (SDLA) on the upper half planar lattice, growing from an infinite line, with local growth rate proportional to the stationary harmonic measure. This model was suggested by Itai Benjamini. The main issue is a known problem in DLA models, the long range effects of large arms. In this paper we overcome this difficulty via a multi-scale argument controlling the dynamical discrepancies created on all scales while running two coupled SDLA on different starting configurations.
