Abstract:We prove that the powers of an edge ideal with linear quotients must also have linear quotients by employing a novel, easily implementable ordering of the minimal generators. As a consequence, we give explicit formulas for the projective dimension and Betti numbers of the edge ideals of whisker graphs. We also prove that second and higher powers of the edge ideals of anticycles admit linear quotient orderings, thus resolving an open question of Hoefel and Whieldon in the affirmative.

Abstract:Let $Q$ be a local ring with maximal ideal $\mathfrak{n}$ and let $f,g\in \mathfrak{n}\smallsetminus\mathfrak{n}^2$ with $fg=0$. When $M$ is a finite $Q$-module with $fM=0$, we show that a minimal free resolution of $M$ over $Q$ has a differential graded module structure over the differential graded algebra $Q\langle y,t\mid \partial(y)=f, \partial(t)=gy\rangle$. When $(f,g)$ is a pair of exact zero divisors, we use this structure to describe a minimal free resolution of $M$ over $Q/(f)$.

Abstract:A canonical minimal free resolution of an arbitrary co-artinian lattice ideal over the polynomial ring is constructed over any field whose characteristic is 0 or any but finitely many positive primes. The differential has a closed-form combinatorial description as a sum over lattice paths in $\mathbb{Z}^n$ of weights that come from sequences of faces in simplicial complexes indexed by lattice points. Over a field of any characteristic, a non-canonical but simpler resolution is constructed by selecting choices of higher-dimensional analogues of spanning trees along lattice paths. These constructions generalize sylvan resolutions for monomial ideals by lifting them equivariantly to lattice modules.

Minimal cellular resolutions of powers of matching field ideals

Abstract:We study a family of monomial ideals, called block diagonal matching field ideals, which arise as monomial Gröbner degenerations of determinantal ideals. Our focus is on the minimal free resolutions of these ideals and all of their powers. Initially, we establish their linear quotient property and compute their Betti numbers, illustrating that their minimal free resolution is supported on a regular CW complex. Our proof relies on the results of Herzog and Takayama, demonstrating that ideals with a linear quotient property have a minimal free resolution, and on the construction by Dochtermann and Mohammadi of cellular realizations of these resolutions. We begin by proving the linear quotient property for each power of such an ideal. Subsequently, we show that their corresponding decomposition map is regular, resulting in a minimal cellular resolution. Finally, we demonstrate that distinct decomposition maps lead to different cellular complexes with the same face numbers.

Abstract:We introduce the class of principal symmetric ideals, which are ideals generated by the orbit of a single polynomial under the action of the symmetric group. Fixing the degree of the generating polynomial, this class of ideals is parametrized by points in a suitable projective space. We show that the minimal free resolution of a principal symmetric ideal is constant on a nonempty Zariski open subset of this projective space and we determine this resolution explicitly. Along the way, we study two classes of graded algebras which we term narrow and extremely narrow; both of which are instances of compressed artinian algebras.

The Eliahou-Kervaire resolution over a skew polynomial ring

Abstract:In a 1987 paper, Eliahou and Kervaire constructed a minimal resolution of a class of monomial ideals in a polynomial ring, called stable ideals. As a consequence of their construction they deduced several homological properties of stable ideals. Furthermore they showed that this resolution admits an associative, graded commutative product that satisfies the Leibniz rule. In this paper we show that their construction can be extended to stable ideals in skew polynomial rings. As a consequence we show that the homological properties of stable ideals proved by Eliahou and Kervaire hold also for stable ideals in skew polynomial rings. Finally we show that the resolution we construct admits a product generalizing the one given by Eliahou and Kervaire in the commutative case.

Abstract:Edge ideals of finite simple graphs are well-studied over polynomial rings. In this paper, we initiate the study of edge ideals over exterior algebras, specifically focusing on the depth and singular varieties of such ideals. We prove an upper bound on the depth of the edge ideal associated to a general graph and a more refined bound for bipartite graphs, and we show that both are tight. We also compute the depth of several large families of graphs including cycles, complete multipartite graphs, spider graphs, and Ferrers graphs. Finally, we focus on the effect whiskering a graph has on the depth of the associated edge ideal.

C-minimal fields have the exchange property

Abstract:We show that C-minimal fields (i.e., C-minimal expansions of ACVF) have the exchange property, answering a question of Haskell and Macpherson. Additionally, we strengthen some theorems of Cubides Kovacsics and Delon on C-minimal fields. First, we show that definably complete C-minimal fields of characteristic 0 have generic differentiability. Second, we show that if the induced structure on the residue field is a pure ACF, then polynomial boundedness holds. In fact, polynomial boundedness can only fail if there are unexpected definable automorphisms of the multiplicative group of the residue field.

Abstract:We show how to obtain minimal projective resolutions of finitely generated modules over an idempotent subring $\Gamma_e := (1-e)R(1-e)$ of a semiperfect noetherian basic ring $R$ by a construction inside $\mathsf{mod} R$. This is then applied to investigate homological properties of idempotent subrings $\Gamma_e$ under the assumption of $R/\langle 1-e\rangle$ being a right artinian ring. In particular, we prove the conjecture by Ingalls and Paquette that a simple module $S_e := eR /\operatorname{rad} eR$ with $\operatorname{Ext}_R^1(S_e,S_e) = 0$ is self-orthogonal, that is $\operatorname{Ext}^k_R(S_e,S_e)$ vanishes for all $k \geq 1$, whenever $\operatorname{gl} R$ and $\operatorname{pdim} eR(1-e)_{\Gamma_e}$ are finite. Indeed, a slightly more general result is established, which applies to sandwiched idempotent subrings: Suppose $e \in R$ is an idempotent such that all idempotent subrings $\Gamma$ sandwiched between $\Gamma_e$ and $R$, that is $\Gamma_e \subset \Gamma \subset R$, have finite global dimension. Then the simple summands of $S_e$ can be numbered $S_1, \dots, S_n$ such that $\operatorname{Ext}_R^k(S_i, S_j) = 0$ for $1 \leq j \leq i \leq n$ and all $k > 0$.

Abstract:We explicitly describe cellular minimal free resolutions of certain classes of edge ideals of weighted complete bipartite graphs based on a construction of Visscher. Specifically, we show that Visscher's construction minimally resolves all edge ideals of undirected vertex-weighted complete bipartite graphs, and we characterize the edge-weighted complete bipartite graphs whose edge ideals are minimally resolved by Visscher's construction.

Most are equivalent to Hahn series fields $K((t^\Gamma))$ where $\Gamma$ satisfies some divisibility conditions and $K$ is $\mathbb{F}_p^{alg}$ or a local field of characteristic zero. Abstract:Let $\Bbbk$ be a field, and let $I$ be a monomial ideal in the polynomial ring $R=\Bbbk[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$. In her thesis, Taylor introduced a complex that provides a finite free resolution of $R/I$ as an $R$-module. Building on this, Ferraro, Martin and Moore extended this construction to monomial ideals in skew polynomial rings. Since the Taylor resolution is generally not minimal, significant effort has been devoted to identifying classes of ideals with minimal free resolutions that are relatively straightforward to construct. In a 1987 paper, Eliahou and Kervaire developed a minimal free resolution for a class of monomial ideals in $R$ known as stable ideals. This result was later generalized to stable ideals in skew polynomial rings by Ferraro and Hardesty. In a 2002 paper, Herzog and Takayama constructed a minimal free resolution for monomial ideals with linear quotients, a broader class of ideals containing stable ideals. Their resolution reduces to the Eliahou-Kervaire resolution in the stable case. In this paper, we generalize the Herzog-Takayama resolution to skew polynomial rings.

Abstract:A celebrated theorem of Fröberg gives a complete combinatorial classification of quadratic square-free monomial ideals with a linear resolution. A generalization of this theorem to higher degree square-free monomial ideals is an active area of research. The existence of a linear resolution of such ideals often depends on the field over which the polynomial ring is defined. Hence, it is too much to expect that in the higher degree case a linear resolution can be identified purely using a combinatorial feature of an associated combinatorial structure. However, some classes of ideals having linear resolutions have been identified using combinatorial structures. In the present paper, we use the notion of $r$-independence to construct an $r$-uniform hypergraph from the given graph. We then show that when the underlying graph is co-chordal, the corresponding edge ideal is vertex splittable, a condition stronger than having a linear resolution. We use this result to explicitly compute graded Betti numbers for various graph classes. Finally, we give a different proof for the existence of a linear resolution using the topological notion of $r$-collapsibility.

Abstract:This paper gives a description of various recent results which construct monomial ideals with a given minimal free resolution. We show that these are all instances of coordinatizing a finite atomic lattice as defined by Mapes. Subsequently, we explain how in some of these cases (in one case work by Faridi, and in another work by Fl\oystad), where questions still remain, this point of view can be applied. We also prove an equivalence in the case of trees between the notion of maximal defined by Fl\oystad and a notion of being maximal in a Betti stratum.

Abstract:New families of algebras and DG algebras with two simple modules are introduced and described. Using the twisted tensor product operation, we prove that such algebras have finite global dimension, and the resulting DG algebras are smooth. This description allows us to show that some of these DG algebras determine smooth proper noncommutative curves that provide smooth minimal noncommutative resolutions for singular rational curves.

Abstract:Factoring ideals in integral domains is a central topic in multiplicative ideal theory. In the present paper we study monoids of ideals and consider factorizations of ideals into multiplicatively irreducible ideals. The focus is on the monoid of nonzero divisorial ideals and on the monoid of $v$-invertible divisorial ideals in weakly Krull Mori domains. Under suitable algebraic finiteness conditions we establish arithmetical finiteness results, in particular for the monotone catenary degree and for the structure of sets of lengths and of their unions.
