Abstract:We establish the asymptotic expansion of certain integrals of [Formula: see text] classes on moduli spaces of curves [Formula: see text], when either the [Formula: see text] or [Formula: see text] goes to infinity. Our main tools are cut-join type recursion formulae from the Witten–Kontsevich theorem, as well as asymptotics of solutions to the first Painlevé equation. We also raise a conjecture on large genus asymptotics for [Formula: see text]-point functions of [Formula: see text] classes and partially verify the positivity of coefficients in generalized Mirzakhani’s formula of higher Weil–Petersson volumes.

Abstract:Recently, there has been great interest in the application of composition laws to problems in enumerative geometry. Using the moduli space of stable maps, we compute the number of irreducible, reduced, nodal, degree-$d$ genus-$2$ plane curves whose normalization has a fixed complex structure and which pass through $3d - 2$ general points in $\Bbb P^2$.

Abstract:We study the structure of the asymptotic expansion of the probability that a combinatorial object is connected. We show that the coefficients appearing in those asymptotics are integers and can be interpreted as the counting sequences of other derivative combinatorial classes. The general result applies to rapidly growing combinatorial structures, which we call gargantuan, that also admit a sequence decomposition. The result is then applied to several models of graphs, of surfaces (square-tiled surfaces, combinatorial maps), and to geometric models of higher dimension (constellations, graph encoded manifolds). The corresponding derivative combinatorial classes are irreducible (multi)tournaments, indecomposable (multi)permutations and indecomposable perfect (multi)matchings.

Abstract:Answering a question of Geoff Robinson, we compute the large n limiting proportion of i(n,q)/q^[n^2/2], where i(n,q) denotes the number of involutions in GL(n,q). We give similar results for the finite unitary, symplectic, and orthogonal groups, in both odd and even characteristic. At the heart of this work are certain new "sum=product" identities. Our self-contained treatment of the enumeration of involutions in even characteristic symplectic and orthogonal groups may also be of interest.

Symmetries and intrinsic vs. extrinsic properties of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0, n}$

Abstract:We consider the following question: How much of the combinatorial structure determining properties of $\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0, n}}$ is ``intrinsic'' and how much new information do we obtain from using properties specific to this space? Our approach is to study the effect of the $S_n$-action. Apart from being a natural action to consider, it is known that this action does not extend to other wonderful compactifications associated to the $A_{n - 2}$ hyperplane arrangement. We find the differences in intersection patterns of faces on associahedra and permutohedra which characterize the failure to extend to other compactifications and show that this is reflected by most terms of degree $\ge 2$ of the cohomology/Chow ring. Even from a combinatorial perspective, terms of degree 1 are more naturally related to geometric properties. In particular, imposing $S_n$-invariance implies that many of the log concave sequences obtained from degree 1 Hodge--Riemann relations (and all of them for $n \le 2000$) on the Chow ring of $\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0, n}}$ can be restricted to those with a special recursive structure. A conjectural result implies that this is true for all $n$. Elements of these sequences can be expressed as polynomials in quantum Littlewood--Richardson coefficients multiplied by terms such as partition components, factorials, and multinomial coefficients. After dividing by binomial coefficients, polynomials with these numbers as coefficients can be interepreted in terms of volumes or resultants. Finally, we find a connection between the geometry of $\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0, n}}$ and higher degree Hodge--Riemann relations of other rings via Toeplitz matrices.

Abstract:Abstract We derive explicit asymptotic formulae for the joint moments of the $n_{1}$-th and $n_{2}$-th derivatives of the characteristic polynomials of Circular Unitary Ensemble random matrices for any non-negative integers $n_{1}, n_{2}$. These formulae are expressed in terms of determinants whose entries involve modified Bessel functions of the first kind. We also express them in terms of two types of combinatorial sums. Similar results are obtained for the analogue of Hardy’s $Z$-function. We use these formulae to formulate general conjectures for the joint moments of the $n_{1}$-th and $n_{2}$-th derivatives of the Riemann zeta-function and of Hardy’s $Z$-function. Our conjectures are supported by comparison with results obtained previously in the number theory literature.

Abstract:In this paper, we study asymptotic expansions of positive solutions of the conformal scalar curvature equation $$ - \Delta u = K(x) u^\frac{n + 2}{n - 2} ~~~~~~ \textmd{in} ~ B_1 \setminus \{ 0 \} $$ with an isolated singularity at the origin. Under certain flatness conditions on $K$, we establish a higher-order expansion of solutions near the origin. In particular, we give the refined second-order asymptotic expansion of solutions when $n \geq 6$. Moreover, we also obtain an arbitrary-order expansion of singular positive solutions of the anisotropic elliptic equation $$ - \,{\rm div} (|x|^{- 2 a} \nabla u) = |x|^{- b p} u^{p - 1} ~~~~~~ \textmd{in} ~ B_1 \setminus \{ 0 \}, $$ where $0 \leq a < \frac{n - 2}{2}$, $a \leq b < a + 1$ and $p = \frac{2 n}{n - 2 + 2 (b - a)}$. This equation is arising from the celebrated Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality.

Involutions in Coxeter groups

Abstract:We combinatorially characterize the number $\mathrm{cc}_2$ of conjugacy classes of involutions in any Coxeter group in terms of higher rank odd graphs. This notion naturally generalizes the concept of odd graphs, used previously to count the number of conjugacy classes of reflections. We provide uniform bounds and discuss some extremal cases, where the number $\mathrm{cc}_2$ is smallest or largest possible. Moreover, we provide formulae for $\mathrm{cc}_2$ in free and direct products as well as for some finite and affine types, besides computing $\mathrm{cc}_2$ for all triangle groups, and all affine irreducible Coxeter groups of rank up to eleven.

Abstract:The Caporaso-Harris formula gives a recursive algorithm to enumerate delta nodal degree d curves in P^2. The recursion is obtained in terms of curves of lower degree that are tangent to a given divisor. This paper presents two generalizations of this method. The first result is on enumeration of one cuspidal curves on P^2, and the second result is an extension to the fiber bundle setting. We solve the question of counting the characteristic number planar nodal cubics in P^3 by extending the idea of Caporaso-Harris.

Abstract:We propose a new method for obtaining complete asymptotic expansions in a systematic manner, which is suitable for counting sequences of various graph families in dense regime. The core idea is to encode the two-dimensional array of expansion coefficients into a special bivariate generating function, which we call a coefficient generating function. We show that coefficient generating functions possess certain general properties that make it possible to express asymptotics in a short closed form. Also, in most scenarios, we indicate a combinatorial meaning of the involved coefficients. Applications of our method include asymptotics of connected graphs, irreducible tournaments, strongly connected digraphs, satisfiable 2-SAT formulae and contradictory strongly connected implication digraphs. Moreover, due to its flexibility, the method allows to treat a wide range of structural variations, including fixing the numbers of connected, irreducible, strongly connected and contradictory components, having the variations on source-like, sink-like and isolated components, or adding weights and marking variables.

Asymptotic directions in the moduli space of curves

Abstract:In this paper we study asymptotic directions in the tangent bundle of the moduli space ${\mathcal M}_g$ of curves of genus $g$, namely those tangent directions that are annihilated by the second fundamental form of the Torelli map. We give examples of asymptotic directions for any $g \geq 4$. We prove that if the rank $d$ of a tangent direction $\zeta \in H^1(T_C)$ (with respect to the infinitesimal deformation map) is less than the Clifford index of the curve $C$, then $\zeta$ is not asymptotic. If the rank of $\zeta$ is equal to the Clifford index of the curve, we give sufficient conditions ensuring that the infinitesimal deformation $\zeta$ is not asymptotic. Then we determine all asymptotic directions of rank 1 and we give an almost complete description of asymptotic directions of rank 2.

Abstract:We introduce enumerative invariants $F_{g,n}$ $(g\geq0$, $n \geq 1)$ associated to a cyclic $A_\infty$ algebra and a splitting of its non-commutative Hodge filtration. These invariants are defined by explicitly computable Feynman sums, and encode the same information as Costello's partition function of the corresponding field theory.

Abstract:In this short article we propose a full large $N$ asymptotic expansion of the probability that the $m^{\text{th}}$ power of a random unitary matrix of size $N$ has all its eigenvalues in a given arc-interval centered in $1$ when $N$ is large. This corresponds to the asymptotic expansion of a Toeplitz determinant whose symbol is the indicator function of several intervals having a discrete rotational symmetry. This solves and improves a conjecture left opened by the author. It also provides a rare example of the explicit computation of a full asymptotic expansion of a genus $g>0$ classical spectral curve, including the oscillating non-perturbative terms, using the topological recursion.

Abstract:We prove that the space of complex irreducible polynomials of degree $d$ in $n$ variables satisfies two forms of homological stability: first, its cohomology stabilizes as $d$ increases, and second, its compactly supported cohomology stabilizes as $n$ increases. Our topological results are inspired by counting results over finite fields due to Carlitz and Hyde.
