Abstract:The effective use of limited resources for controlling spreading processes on networks is of prime significance in diverse contexts, ranging from the identification of "influential spreaders" for maximizing information dissemination and targeted interventions in regulatory networks, to the development of mitigation policies for infectious diseases and financial contagion in economic systems. Solutions for these optimization tasks that are based purely on topological arguments are not fully satisfactory; in realistic settings the problem is often characterized by heterogeneous interactions and requires interventions over a finite time window via a restricted set of controllable nodes. The optimal distribution of available resources hence results from an interplay between network topology and spreading dynamics. We show how these problems can be addressed as particular instances of a universal analytical framework based on a scalable dynamic message-passing approach and demonstrate the efficacy of the method on a variety of real-world examples.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The core problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to effectively utilize limited resources in the network to maximize or minimize the impact of the spreading process. Specifically, the paper focuses on how to control the spreading process by optimizing resource allocation strategies in different application scenarios. These applications include, but are not limited to: 1. **Identifying "Influential Spreaders"**: In information dissemination, how to identify the key nodes that can maximize information diffusion. 2. **Formulating Intervention Measures**: In regulatory networks, how to influence network dynamics through limited intervention measures. 3. **Developing Prevention and Control Policies**: In infectious disease prevention and control, how to slow down the spread of diseases through the limited distribution of vaccines or antiviral drugs. 4. **Risk Control in Economic Systems**: In financial systems, how to prevent financial contagion through limited resources. ### Main Challenges - **Heterogeneous Interactions**: Networks in reality usually have complex topological structures and heterogeneous interaction patterns, which limit the effectiveness of solutions based solely on topological properties. - **Limited Time Windows**: In many cases, intervention measures need to be completed within a limited time and can only be carried out through a restricted set of nodes. - **Dynamic Optimization**: The optimal allocation of resources depends not only on the static characteristics of the network but also is closely related to the dynamic characteristics of the spreading process. ### Solutions The paper proposes a general - purpose analysis framework that combines the Dynamic Message - Passing (DMP) algorithm and can handle the above challenges. Specific methods include: - **Dynamic Message - Passing Algorithm**: Through the distributed message - passing algorithm, estimate the state probabilities of nodes at different times, thereby achieving accurate modeling of the spreading process. - **Optimization Framework**: Construct an optimization framework that can handle multiple objective functions, such as maximizing or minimizing the spreading range, activation of specific nodes, etc. - **Budget and Constraints**: Consider the limitations of resources and time windows to ensure that the optimization scheme is feasible in practical applications. ### Application Examples - **Target Problem**: In a small terrorist - related network, activate specific nodes within a predetermined time through dynamic resource allocation. - **Optimal Seed Selection**: In the Slovenian parliamentary party relationship network, maximize the impact of information dissemination through resource allocation at the initial time. - **Online Epidemic Control**: Use the SIR model and vaccination strategies to dynamically adjust resource allocation to effectively control the spread of infectious diseases. ### Conclusion By proposing an optimization framework combined with the dynamic message - passing algorithm, the paper successfully solves the problem of how to effectively utilize limited resources to control the spreading process in complex networks. This framework not only makes important theoretical contributions but also shows good performance and wide applicability in practical applications.
