Abstract:We propose an interacting lattice gas model of structural glass characterized by particle distinguishability and site-particle-dependent random nearest-neighboring particle interactions. This incorporates disorder quenched in the configuration space rather than in the physical space. The model exhibits non-trivial energetics while still admitting exact equilibrium states directly constructible at arbitrary temperature and density. The dynamics is defined by activated hopping following standard kinetic Monte Carlo approach without explicit facilitation rule. Kinetic simulations show emergent dynamic facilitation behaviors in the glassy phase in which motions of individual voids are significant only when accelerated by other voids nearby. This provides a microscopic justification for the dynamic facilitation picture of structural glass.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about dynamic facilitation in glassy dynamics. Specifically, the author proposes a distinguishable - particle lattice gas model (DPLM) for studying glassy dynamics in disordered systems. The feature of this model is that the interactions between particles depend on position and particle type, and these interactions are time - independent but have quenched disorder in configuration space. Through this model, the author aims to provide a microscopic - level explanation that in the glassy state, the movement of a single void is significant only when it is accelerated by other nearby voids, thus supporting the dynamic facilitation theory. The key contributions of the paper include: 1. **Model Definition**: A distinguishable - particle lattice model (DPLM) containing an infinite number of particle types is proposed. Each particle has a different interaction strength with other particles, and this difference simulates the different particle properties in actual glass systems. 2. **Energy Function**: A total system energy \(E\) is defined, which is obtained by accumulating the interaction energies \(V_{ij}^{kl}\) between all nearest - neighbor particle pairs. These interaction energies are time - independent random variables that follow a specific probability distribution. 3. **Dynamics Simulation**: The kinetic Monte Carlo approach is used to simulate the dynamic behavior of the system, showing that the system exhibits obvious dynamic facilitation behavior at low temperatures. 4. **Verification of Dynamic Facilitation Behavior**: By analyzing the mean - square displacement (MSD) of particles, the self - intermediate scattering function, and the four - point correlation function, it is verified that in the glassy state, the movement of voids is promoted by other nearby voids. In conclusion, through constructing and simulating the DPLM model, this paper provides a microscopic explanation for dynamic facilitation in glassy dynamics, further supporting the importance of the dynamic facilitation theory in understanding the glass - forming mechanism.
