Abstract:We prove the slope inequality for a relative minimal surface fibration in positive characteristic via Xiao's approach. We also prove a better low bound for the slope of non-hyperelliptic fibrations.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the general notion of the slope for families of curves $f: X \to Y$. The main result is an answer to the above question when $\dim Y = 2$, and we prove a lower bound for this new slope in this case over fields of any characteristic. Both the notion and the slope inequality are compatible with the theory for $\dim Y = 0, 1$ in a very natural way, and this gives a strong evidence that the slope for an $n$-fold fibration of curves $f: X \to Y$ may be $K_{X/Y}^n / \mathrm{ch}_{n-1}(f_* \omega_{X/Y})$. Rather than the usual stability methods, the whole proof of the slope inequality here is based on a completely new method using characteristic $p>0$ geometry. A simpler version of this method yields a new proof of the slope inequality when $\dim Y = 1$.

Abstract:By using the interior curvature estimate and Gromov's compactness theorem, we prove that a stable complete minimal hypersurface in R n +1 with finite total scalar curvature must be a hyperplane. This extends the result obtained by P. Bérard in Remarques sur l'équation de J. Simons, Pitman Monographs Surveys Pure Appl. Math. , vol. 52, 1991, pp. 47-57.

Abstract:We establish the slope equality and give an upper bound of the slope for finite cyclic covering fibrations of an elliptic surface including bielliptic fibrations of genus greater than 5. We also give an upper bound of the slope for triple cyclic covering fibrations of a ruled surface and hyperelliptic fibrations, which provides a new proof of Xiao's upper bound.

Abstract:We prove effective upper bounds on the global sections of nef line bundles of small generic degree over a fibered surface over a field of any characteristic. It can be viewed as a relative version of the classical Noether inequality for surfaces. As a consequence, we give a new proof of the slope inequality for fibered surface without using any stability method. The treatment is essentially different from these of Xiao, Cornalba--Harris and Moriwaki. We also study the geography problem of surfaces in positive characteristics and show that the Severi inequality is true for surfaces of general type in positive characteristic whose Albanese map is generically finite. Moreover, the geography of surfaces with Albanese fibrations is studied.

We formulate explicitly the length squares of the higher fundamental forms andthe higher curvatures for superminimal surfaces in terms of the metric of the surface and the Khlerangle of the immersion. Abstract:Pseudo-splines of type I were introduced in [I. Daubechies, B. Han, A. Ron, Z. Shen, Framelets: MRA-based constructions of wavelet frames, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 14 (2003) 1–46] and [Selenick, Smooth wavelet tight frames with zero moments, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 10 (2000) 163–181] and type II were introduced in [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104]. Both types of pseudo-splines provide a rich family of refinable functions with B-splines, interpolatory refinable functions and refinable functions with orthonormal shifts as special examples. In [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104], Dong and Shen gave a regularity analysis of pseudo-splines of both types. The key to regularity analysis is Proposition 3.2 in [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104], which also appeared in [A. Cohen, J.P. Conze, Régularité des bases d'ondelettes et mesures ergodiques, Rev. Mat. Iberoamericana 8 (1992) 351–365] and [I. Daubechies, Ten Lectures on Wavelets, CBMS-NSF Series in Applied Mathematics, SIAM, Philadelphia, 1992] for the case l=N−1. In this note, we will give a new insight into this proposition.

Abstract:Assume that X is a smooth projective 3-fold with ample K-X. We study a problem of Miles Reid to prove the inequality K-X(3) greater than or equal to 2/3(2p(g)(X) - 5), where p(g)(X) is the geometric genus. This inequality is sharp according to known examples of M. Kobayashi. We also birationally classify arbitrary minimal 3-folds of general type with small slope.

Abstract:Let $f: S \longrightarrow C$ be a surjective morphism with connected fibers from a smooth complex projective surface $S$ to a smooth complex projective curve $C$ with general fiber $F$. In this paper, we develop a more general version of the slope inequality for data $(D, \mathcal{F})$, where $D$ is an arbitrary relatively effective divisor on $S$ and $\mathcal{F}$ is a locally free sub-sheaf of $f_{*}\mathcal{O}_{S}(D)$. We see how the speciality of $D$, restricted to the general fiber, plays a role in the results. Moreover, we compute some natural examples and provide applications.

Abstract:Using the theory of moduli of curves, we establish various slope inequalities for general fibered surfaces. More precisely, we introduce the notion of functorial divisors on Artin stacks and prove a theorem concerning their effectiveness. Furthermore, we consider the moduli stack of reduced and local complete intersection canonically polarized curves and prove that the closed substack parametrizing non-stable curves has no divisorial components. Applying the above theorems to some tautological divisors on various moduli stacks of curves, we obtain several slope (in)equalities, e.g., a generalization of Moriwaki's slope inequality, slope equalities of general fibered surfaces whose fibers satisfy the Morsification conjecture. As applications, we provide a positive answer to Reid's conjecture concerning algebraic Morsification of non-hyperelliptic fibrations of genus $3$ and a positive partial answer to the question posed by Lu and Tan regarding the Chern invariants of fiber germs.

Abstract:Kodaira fibrations have non-trivial vertical fundamental groups and their slopes are all $12$. In this paper, we show that $12$ is indeed the sharp upper bound for the slopes of fibrations with trivial vertical fundamental groups. Precisely, for each $g\geq3$ we prove the existence of fibrations of genus $g$ with trivial vertical fundamental groups whose slopes can be arbitrarily close to $12$. This gives a relative analogy of Roulleau-Urzúa's work on the slopes of surfaces of general type with trivial fundamental groups.

Abstract:Under a stronger genericity condition, we prove the local analogue of ghost conjecture of Bergdall and Pollack. As applications, we deduce in this case (a) a folklore conjecture of Breuil--Buzzard--Emerton on the crystalline slopes of Kisin's crystabelian deformation spaces, (b) Gouvea's $\lfloor\frac{k-1}{p+1}\rfloor$-conjecture on slopes of modular forms, and (c) the finiteness of irreducible components of the eigencurve. In addition, applying combinatorial arguments by Bergdall and Pollack, and by Ren, we deduce as corollaries in the reducible and strongly generic case, (d) Gouvea--Mazur conjecture, (e) a variant of Gouvea's conjecture on slope distributions, and (f) a refined version of Coleman's spectral halo conjecture.

Abstract:Let $f\colon S\to B$ a fibred surface with fibres of genus $g\geq 2$ and base curve of genus $b$. Let $u_f$ be its unitary rank. We prove many new slope inequalities involving $u_f$ and some other invariants of the fibration. As applications: (1) we prove a new Xiao-type bound on $u_f$ with respect to $g$ for non-isotrivial fibrations: \[ u_f< g\frac{5g-2}{6g-3}. \] In particular this imples that if $f$ is not locally trivial and $u_f=g-1$ is maximal, then $g\leq 6$; (2) we prove a result in the direction of the Coleman-Oort conjecture: a new constrain on the rank of the (-1,0) part of the maximal unitary Higgs subbundle of a curve generically contained in the Torelli locus; (3) we study in the detail the extremal case (for non-isotrivial $f$) where $u_f=g-1$, giving many constrains for the case $g=6$, $u_f=5$.

Abstract:1) We give a 3-dimensional analogue of M. Noether's inequality for canonically polarized threefolds: $K^3\ge 2(2p_g-5)/3$. This inequality is sharp by known examples of M. Kobayashi. 2) Given a minimal 3-fold $X$ of general type with canonical singularities, if $K^3< (3p_g-5)/2$, we show that $X$ must be birationally fibred by curves of genus 2.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problem of constructing a smooth Levi-flat hypersurface locally or globally attached to a real codimension two submanifold in $\mathbb C^{n+1}$, or more generally in a Stein manifold, with elliptic CR singularities, a research direction originated from a fundamental and classical paper of E. Bishop. Earlier works along these lines include those by many prominent mathematicians working both on complex analysis and geometry. We prove that a compact smooth (or, real analytic) real codimension two submanifold $M$, that is contained in the boundary of a smoothly bounded strongly pseudoconvex domain, with a natural and necessary condition called CR non-minimal condition at CR points and with two elliptic CR singular points bounds a smooth-up-to-boundary (real analytic-up-to-boundary, respectively) Levi-flat hypersurface $\widehat{M}$. This answers a well-known question left open from the work of Dolbeault-Tomassini-Zaitsev, or a generalized version of a problem already asked by Bishop in 1965. Our study here reveals an intricate interaction of several complex analysis with other fields such as symplectic geometry and foliation theory.

Abstract:We present an extension of several results on pairs and varieties to foliated surface pairs. We prove the boundedness of local complements, the local index theorem, and the uniform boundedness of minimal log discrepancies (mlds), as well as establishing the existence of uniform rational lc polytopes. Furthermore, we address two questions posed by P. Cascini and C. Spicer on foliations, providing negative responses. We also demonstrate that the Grauert-Riemenschneider type vanishing theorem generally fails for lc foliations on surfaces. In addition, we determine the set of minimal log discrepancies for foliated surface pairs with specific coefficients, which leads to the recovery of Y.-A. Chen's proof on the ascending chain condition conjecture for mlds for foliated surfaces.

Albanese fibrations of surfaces with low slope

Abstract:Let $S$ be a minimal irregular surface of general type, whose Albanese map induces a fibration $f:\,S \to C$ of genus $g$.We prove a linear upper bound on the genus $g$ if $K_S^2\leq 4\chi(\mathcal{O}_S)$. Examples are constructed showing that the above linear upper bound is sharp. We also give a characterization of the Albanese fibrations reaching the above upper bound when $\chi(\mathcal{O}_S)\geq 5$.On the other hand, we will construct a sequence of surfaces $S_n$ of general type with $K_{S_n}^2/\chi(\mathcal{O}_{S_n})>4$ and with an Albanese fibration $f_n$, such that the genus $g_n$ of a general fiber of $f_n$ increases quadratically with $\chi(\mathcal{O}_{S_n})$,and that $K_{S_n}^2/\chi(\mathcal{O}_{S_n})$ can be arbitrarily close to $4$.

Abstract:We prove a sharp relative Clifford inequality for relatively special divisors on varieties fibered by curves. It generalizes the classical Clifford inequality about a single curve to a family of curves. It yields a geographical inequality for varieties of general type and Albanese-fibered by curves, extending the work of Horikawa, Persson, and Xiao in dimension two to arbitrary dimensions. We also apply it to deduce a slope inequality for some arbitrary dimensional families of curves. It sheds light on the existence of a most general Cornalba-Harris-Xiao type inequality for families of curves. The whole proof is built on a new tree-like filtration for nef divisors on varieties fibered by curves. One key ingredient of the proof is to estimate the sum of all admissible products of nef thresholds with respect to this filtration.
