Abstract:We give a counterexample to a conjecture stated in Linial and London 2006 regarding expansion on $\mathbb{T}^2$ under $\begin{bmatrix}1&1\\ 0&1\end{bmatrix}$ and $\begin{bmatrix}1&0\\ 1&1\end{bmatrix}$.

Abstract:Let $T_n$ be a $2$-dimensional determinantal hypertree on $n$ vertices. Kahle and Newman conjectured that the $p$-torsion of $H_1(T_n,\mathbb{Z})$ asymptotically follows the Cohen-Lenstra distribution. For $p=2$, we disprove this conjecture by showing that given a positive integer $h$, for all large enough $n$, we have \[\mathbb{P}(\dim H_1(T_n,\mathbb{F}_2)\ge h)\ge \frac{e^{-200h}}{(100h)^{5h}}.\] We also show that $T_n$ is a bad cosystolic expander with positive probability.

Abstract:Assume that $f$ is a $C^r(r\geq 2)$ specially absolutely partial hyperbolic endomorphism on the 2-torus which is homotopic to an expanding linear endomorphism $A$ with irrational real eigenvalues $|\lambda^u_A|>|\lambda^c_A|>1$. If $f$ expands area, then the semi-conjugacy $h$ between $f$ and $A$ is the conjugacy, and the conjugacy is $C^1$ along the center foliation. Furthermore, if $f$ not only expands area but also has the $C^1$ center bundle, then the conjugacy is smooth.

Abstract:In this paper, we classify smooth, contractible affine varieties equipped with faithful torus actions of complexity two, having a unique fixed point and a two-dimensional algebraic quotient isomorphic to a toric blow-up of a toric surface. These varieties are of particular interest as they represent the simplest candidates for potential counterexamples to the linearization conjecture in affine geometry.

Abstract:In recent work of Kennard, Khalili Samani, and the last author, they generalize the Half-Maximal Symmetry Rank result of Wilking for torus actions on positively curved manifolds to $\mathbb{Z}_2$-tori with a fixed point. They show that if the rank is approximately one-fourth of the dimension of the manifold, then fixed point set components of small co-rank subgroups of the $\Z_2$-torus are homotopy equivalent to spheres, real projective spaces, complex projective spaces, or lens spaces. In this paper, we lower the bound on the rank of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-torus to approximately $n/6$ and $n/8$ and are able to classify either the integral cohomology ring or the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-cohomology ring, respectively, of the fixed point set of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-torus.

The Torus of Triangles

Abstract:We prove the 2-torus $\mathbb T$, an abelian linear algebraic group, occurs as a compactification of the moduli space of labeled, oriented, similarity classes of triangles. A (possibly degenerate) triangle is {\it inscribable} if it can be inscribed in a circle. We show $\mathbb T$ is a fine moduli space of labeled, oriented, possibly-degenerate inscribable classes, and that the (moduli) stack of (unlabeled, unoriented) possibly-degenerate inscribable classes is the quotient $[\mathbb T/D_6]$. To illustrate how aptly $\mathbb T$ describes triangle classes we show the main triangle types form distinguished algebraic structures: subgroups, cosets, and elements of small order, and use the natural metric on $\mathbb T$ to compare them.

On shrinking targets for linear expanding and hyperbolic toral endomorphisms

Abstract:Let $A$ be an invertible $d\times d$ matrix with integer elements. Then $A$ determines a self-map $T$ of the $d$-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^d=\mathbb{R}^d/\mathbb{Z}^d$. Given a real number $\tau>0$, and a sequence $\{z_n\}$ of points in $\mathbb{T}^d$, let $W_\tau$ be the set of points $x\in\mathbb{T}^d$ such that $T^n(x)\in B(z_n,e^{-n\tau})$ for infinitely many $n\in\mathbb{N}$. The Hausdorff dimension of $W_\tau$ has previously been studied by Hill--Velani and Li--Liao--Velani--Zorin. We provide complete results on the Hausdorff dimension of $W_\tau$ for any expanding matrix. For hyperbolic matrices, we compute the dimension of $W_\tau$ only when $A$ is a $2 \times 2$ matrix. We give counterexamples to a natural candidate for a dimension formula for general dimension $d$.

Abstract:We address a conjecture of Mirzakhani about the statistical behavior of certain expanding families of ``twist tori'' in the moduli space of hyperbolic surfaces, showing that they equidistribute to a certain Lebesgue-class measure along almost all sequences. We also identify a number of other expanding families of twist tori whose limiting distributions are mutually singular to Lebesgue.

Abstract:In this paper we study a specific class of actions of a $2$-torus $\mathbb{Z}_2^k$ on manifolds, namely, the actions of complexity one in general position. We describe the orbit space of equivariantly formal $2$-torus actions of complexity one in general position and restricted complexity one actions in the case of small covers. It is observed that the orbit spaces of such actions are topological manifolds. If the action is equivariantly formal, we prove that the orbit space is a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-homology sphere. We study a particular subclass of these $2$-torus actions: restrictions of small covers to a subgroup of index 2 in general position. The subgroup of this form exists if and only if the small cover is orientable, and in this case we prove that the orbit space of a restricted $2$-torus action is homeomorphic to a sphere.

Anomalies for conformal nets associated with lattices and $T$-kernels

Abstract:Let $L\subseteq \mathbb{R}^{n}$ an even lattice and $T_{L}=\mathbb{R}^{n}/L$ the associated torus. Associated with $L$ we construct $T_{L}$--kernel on a hyperfinite factor type $\mathcal{A}_{L}$, i.e. a monomorphism $T_{L}\to\mathsf{Out}(\mathcal{A}_{L})$, and compute Sutherland's obstruction class in $H^{3}_{\mathrm{Borel}}(T_{L},\mathbb{T})\cong H^{4}(BT_{L} ,\mathbb{Z})$, which is an invariant of the $T_{L}$--kernel and an obstruction to the existence of a twisted crossed product by $T_{L}$. As a Corollary, we obtain that for any $n$-torus $T$ any class in $H^{3}_{\mathrm{Borel}}(T,\mathbb{T})$ arises as an obstruction for a $T$-kernel on the hyperfinite type III${}_{1}$ factor $R$. The construction is an analogue of the construction of Vaughan Jones for finite groups on the hyperfinite type II${}_{1}$ factor but is also motivated by and has applications to conformal nets. Namely, there is an associated local extension $\mathcal{A}_{L}\supseteq \mathcal{A}_{\mathbb{R}^n}$ of conformal nets and the $T_{L}$--kernel corresponds to a family of $T_{L^\ast}$--twisted sectors representations whose anomaly (obstruction) can be identified with the inner product on $L$ seen as a class in $H^{4}(BT_{L},\mathbb{Z})\cong \operatorname{Sym}^{2}(L,\mathbb{Z})$.

Abstract:For an m by n real matrix A, we investigate the set of badly approximable targets for A as a subset of the m-torus. It is well known that this set is large in the sense that it is dense and has full Hausdorff dimension. We investigate the relationship between its measure and Diophantine properties of A. On the one hand, we give the first examples of a non-singular matrix A such that the set of badly approximable targets has full measure with respect to some non-trivial algebraic measure on the torus. For this, we use transference theorems due to Jarnik and Khintchine, and the parametric geometry of numbers in the sense of Roy. On the other hand, we give a novel Diophantine condition on A that slightly strengthens non-singularity, and show that under the assumption that A satisfies this condition, the set of badly approximable targets is a null-set with respect to any non-trivial algebraic measure on the torus. For this we use naive homogeneous dynamics, harmonic analysis, and a novel concept we refer to as mixing convergence of measures.

Abstract:The $r$-uniform expansion $F^{(r)+}$ of a graph $F$ is obtained by enlarging each edge with $r-2$ new vertices such that altogether we use $(r-2)|E(F)|$ new vertices. Two simple lower bounds on the largest number $\mathrm{ex}_r(n,F^{(r)+})$ of $r$-edges in $F^{(r)+}$-free $r$-graphs are $\Omega(n^{r-1})$ (in the case $F$ is not a star) and $\mathrm{ex}(n,K_r,F)$, which is the largest number of $r$-cliques in $n$-vertex $F$-free graphs. We prove that $\mathrm{ex}_r(n,F^{(r)+})=\mathrm{ex}(n,K_r,F)+O(n^{r-1})$. The proof comes with a structure theorem that we use to determine $\ex_r(n,F^{(r)+})$ exactly for some graphs $F$, every $r\chi(F)$ and sufficiently large $n$.

Abstract:We address the existence of non-trivial closed invariant subspaces of operators $T$ on Banach spaces whenever their square $T^2$ have or, more generally, whether there exists a polynomial $p$ with $\mbox{deg}(p)\geq 2$ such that the lattice of invariant subspaces of $p(T)$ is non-trivial. In the Hilbert space setting, the $T^2$-problem was posed by Halmos in the seventies and in 2007, Foias, Jung, Ko and Pearcy conjectured it could be equivalent to the \emph{Invariant Subspace Problem}.

Abstract:We prove that a generic element of the Anosov-Katok class of the torus, $\overline{\mathcal{O}}^{\infty}(\mathbb{T}^2)$, acts parabolically and non-properly on the fine curve graph $C^{\dagger}(\mathbb{T}^2)$. Additionally, we show that a generic element of $\overline{\mathcal{O}}^{\infty}(\mathbb{T}^2)$ admits generalized rotation sets of any point-symmetric compact convex homothety type in the plane.

Abstract:Abstract Rotations $$f_\alpha $$ f α of the one-dimensional torus (equipped with the normalized Lebesgue measure) by an irrational angle $$\alpha $$ α are known to be dynamical systems of rank one. This is equivalent to the property that the covering number $$F^*(f_\alpha )$$ F ∗ ( f α ) of the dynamical system is one. In other words, there exists a basis B such that for arbitrarily high h , an arbitrarily large proportion of the unit torus can be covered by the Rokhlin tower $$(f_\alpha ^kB)_{k=0}^{h-1}$$ ( f α k B ) k = 0 h - 1 . Although B can be chosen with diameter smaller than any fixed $$\varepsilon > 0$$ ε > 0 , it is not always possible to take an interval for B but this can only be done when the partial quotients of $$\alpha $$ α are unbounded. In the present paper, we ask what maximum proportion of the torus can be covered when B is the union of $$n_B \in {\mathbb {N}}$$ n B ∈ N disjoint intervals. This question has been answered in the case $$n_B =1$$ n B = 1 by Checkhova, and here we address the general situation. If $$n_B = 2$$ n B = 2 , we give a precise formula for the maximum proportion. Furthermore, we show that for fixed $$\alpha $$ α , the maximum proportion converges to 1 when $$n_B \rightarrow \infty $$ n B → ∞ . Explicit lower bounds can be given if $$\alpha $$ α has constant partial quotients. Our approach is inspired by the construction involved in the proof of the Rokhlin lemma and furthermore makes use of the three gap theorem.

Abstract:Using Hilbert-Burch matrices, we give an explicit description of the Białynicki-Birula cells on the Hilbert scheme of points on $\mathbb A ^2$ with isolated fixed points. If the fixed point locus is positive dimensional we obtain an étale rational map to the cell. We prove Conjecture 4.2 from <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2309.06871" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2309.06871">arXiv:2309.06871</a> which we realize as a special case of our construction. We also show examples when the construction provides a rational étale map to the Hilbert scheme which is not contained in any Białynicki-Birula cell. Finally, we give an explicit description of the formal deformations of any ideal in the Hilbert scheme of points on the plane.

Abstract:Let $\textrm{Mat}_2(\mathbb{R})$ be the set of $2 \times 2$ matrices with real entries. For any $\varepsilon>0$ and any finitely--supported probability measure $\mu$ on $\textrm{Mat}_2(\mathbb{R})$, we prove that either \[ T(\mu) = \sum_{X, Y \in {\rm supp}(\mu), XY = YX} \mu(X) \mu(Y) < \varepsilon \] or there exists some finite set $S$ contained in a $2$-dimensional subspace of $\textrm{Mat}_2(\mathbb{R})$ such that $\mu(S) \gg \varepsilon^{3}$. We prove quantitatively stronger results when \[ \mu ( (a_{i,j})_{1\leq i,j \leq 2}) = \nu(a_{1,1}) \dots \nu(a_{2,2}) \ \ \text{for every} \ a_{1,1}, \dots, a_{2,2} \in \mathbb{R}, \] with $\nu$ being some finitely--supported probability measure on $\mathbb{R}$. For instance, when $A \subset \mathbb{R}$ is a proper generalised arithmetic progression of dimension $d$, and $\nu = 1_{A}/|A|$, our methods imply that $T(\mu) \ll_d |A|^{-3}$. This is optimal up to the $O_d(1)$ factor. Our proofs involve incidence geometric techniques as well as ideas surrounding the recent progress on Bourgain--Chang type sum-product estimates over $\mathbb{R}$. The latter includes Schmidt's subspace theorem and the resolution of the weak polynomial Freiman--Ruzsa conjecture over integers.
