Abstract:We provide a uniform upper bound on the minimal drift so that the one-per-site frog model on a $d$-ary tree is recurrent. To do this, we introduce a subprocess that couples across trees with different degrees. Finding couplings for frog models on nested sequences of graphs is known to be difficult. The upper bound comes from combining the coupling with a new, simpler proof that the frog model on a binary tree is recurrent when the drift is sufficiently strong. Additionally, we describe a coupling between frog models on trees for which the degree of the smaller tree divides that of the larger one. This implies that the critical drift has a limit as $d$ tends to infinity along certain subsequences.

Abstract:Place an active particle at the root of a $d$-ary tree and a single dormant particle at each non-root site. In discrete time, active particles move towards the root with probability $p$ and, otherwise, away from the root to a uniformly sampled child vertex. When an active particle moves to a site containing a dormant particle, the dormant particle becomes active. The critical drift $p_d$ is the infimum over all $p$ for which infinitely many particles visit the root almost surely. Guo, Tang, and Wei proved that $\sup_{d\geq 3} p_d \leq 1/3$. We improve this bound to $5/17$ with a shorter argument that generalizes to give bounds on $\sup_{d \geq m} p_d$. We additionally prove that $\limsup p_d \leq 1/6$ by finding the limiting critical drift for a non-backtracking variant.

Abstract:We consider an interacting particle system on trees known as the frog model: initially, a single active particle begins at the root and i.i.d.~$\mathrm{Poiss}(\lambda)$ many inactive particles are placed at each non-root vertex. Active particles perform discrete time simple random walk and activate the inactive particles they encounter. We show that for Galton-Watson trees with offspring distributions $Z$ satisfying $\mathbf{P}(Z \geq 2) = 1$ and $\mathbf{E}[Z^{4 + \epsilon}] < \infty$ for some $\epsilon > 0$, there is a critical value $\lambda_c\in(0,\infty)$ separating recurrent and transient regimes for almost surely every tree, thereby answering a question of Hoffman-Johnson-Junge. In addition, we also establish that this critical parameter depends on the entire offspring distribution, not just the maximum value of $Z$, answering another question of Hoffman-Johnson-Junge and showing that the frog model and contact process behave differently on Galton-Watson trees.

Abstract:We consider the interacting particle system on the homogeneous tree of degree $(d + 1)$, known as frog model. In this model, active particles perform independent random walks, awakening all sleeping particles they encounter, and dying after a random number of jumps, with geometric distribution. We prove an upper bound for the critical parameter of survival of the model, which improves the previously known results. This upper bound was conjectured in a paper by Lebensztayn et al. ($ J. Stat. Phys.$, 119(1-2), 331-345, 2005). We also give a closed formula for the upper bound.

Abstract:We consider a random interacting particle system, known as the frog model, on infinite Galton-Watson trees allowing offspring zero and one. The system starts with one awake particle (frog) at the root of the tree and a random number of sleeping particles at the other vertices. Awake frogs move according to simple random walk on the tree and as soon as they encounter sleeping frogs, those will wake up and move independently according to simple random walk. The frog model is called transient, if there are almost surely only finitely many particles returning to the root. In this paper we prove a zero-one law for transience of the frog model and show the existence of a transient phase for certain classes of Galton-Watson trees.

Abstract:The frog model starts with one active particle at the root of a graph and some number of dormant particles at all nonroot vertices. Active particles follow independent random paths, waking all inactive particles they encounter. We prove that certain frog model statistics are monotone in the initial configuration for two nonstandard stochastic dominance relations: the increasing concave and the probability generating function orders. This extends many canonical theorems. We connect recurrence for random initial configurations to recurrence for deterministic configurations. Also, the limiting shape of activated sites on the integer lattice respects both of these orders. Other implications include monotonicity results on transience of the frog model where the number of frogs per vertex decays away from the origin, on survival of the frog model with death, and on the time to visit a given vertex in any frog model.

Abstract:We examine a system of interacting random walks with leftward drift on $\mathbb{Z}$, which begins with a single active particle at the origin and some distribution of inactive particles on the positive integers. Inactive particles become activated when landed on by other particles, and all particles beginning at the same point posses equal leftward drift. Once activated, the trajectories of distinct particles are independent. This system belongs to a broader class of problems involving interacting random walks on rooted graphs, referred to collectively as the frog model. Additional conditions that we impose on our model include that the number of frogs (i.e. particles) at positive integer points is a sequence of independent random variables which is increasing in terms of the standard stochastic order, and that the sequence of leftward drifts associated with frogs originating at these points is decreasing. Our results include sharp conditions with respect to the sequence of random variables and the sequence of drifts, that determine whether the model is transient (meaning the probability infinitely many frogs return to the origin is $0$) or non-transient. Several, more specific, versions of the model described will also be considered, and a cleaner, more simplified set of sharp conditions will be established for each case.

Abstract:Consider a Poisson process on $\mathbb{R}$ with intensity $f$ where $0 \leq f(x)<\infty$ for ${x}\geq 0$ and ${f(x)}=0$ for $x<0$. The "points" of the process represent sleeping frogs. In addition, there is one active frog initially located at the origin. At time ${t}=0$ this frog begins performing Brownian motion with leftward drift $\lambda$ (i.e. its motion is a random process of the form ${B}_{t}-\lambda {t}$). Any time an active frog arrives at a point where a sleeping frog is residing, the sleeping frog becomes active and begins performing Brownian motion with leftward drift $\lambda$, independently of the motion of all of the other active frogs. This paper establishes sharp conditions on the intensity function $f$ that determine whether the model is transient (meaning the probability that infinitely many frogs return to the origin is 0), or non-transient (meaning this probability is greater than 0). A discrete model with $\text{Poiss}(f(n))$ sleeping frogs at positive integer points (and where activated frogs perform biased random walks on $\mathbb{Z}$) is also examined. In this case as well, we obtain a similar sharp condition on $f$ corresponding to transience of the model.

Abstract:We study the recurrence of one-per-site frog model $\text{FM}(d, p)$ on a $d$-ary tree with drift parameter $p\in [0,1]$, which determines the bias of frogs' random walks. We are interested in the minimal drift $p_{d}$ so that the frog model is recurrent. Using a coupling argument together with a generating function technique, we prove that for all $d \ge 2$, $p_{d}\le 1/3$, which is the optimal universal upper bound.

Abstract:We consider a system of interacting random walks known as the frog model. Let $\mathcal{K}_n=(\mathcal{V}_n,\mathcal{E}_n)$ be the complete graph with $n$ vertices and $o\in\mathcal{V}_n$ be a special vertex called the root. Initially, $1+\eta_o$ active particles are placed at the root and $\eta_v$ inactive particles are placed at each other vertex $v\in\mathcal{V}_n\setminus\{o\}$, where $\{\eta_v\}_{v\in \mathcal{V}_n}$ are i.i.d. random variables. At each instant of time, each active particle may die with probability $1-p$. Every active particle performs a simple random walk on $\mathcal{K}_n$ until the moment it dies, activating all inactive particles it hits along its path. Let $V_\infty(\mathcal{K}_n,p)$ be the total number of visited vertices by some active particle up to the end of the process, after all active particles have died. In this paper, we show that $V_\infty(\mathcal{K}_n,p_n)\geq (1-\epsilon)n$ with high probability for any fixed $\epsilon>0$ whenever $p_n\rightarrow 1$. Furthermore, we establish the critical growth rate of $p_n$ so that all vertices are visited. Abstract:In this paper we observe the frog model, an infinite system of interacting random walks, on Z with an asymmetric underlying random walk. Under the assumption of transience with a fixed frog distribution, we construct an explicit formula for the moments of the lower bound of the model's long-run range, as well as their asymptotic limits as the drift of the underlying random walk vanishes. We also provide conditions in which the lower bound can be scaled to converge in probability to the degenerate distribution at 1 as the drift vanishes.

Abstract:Consider a population of infinitesimally small frogs on the real line. Initially the frogs on the positive half-line are dormant while those on the negative half-line are awake and move according to the heat flow. At the interface, the incoming wake frogs try to wake up the dormant frogs and succeed with a probability proportional to their amount among the total amount of involved frogs at the specific site. Otherwise, the incoming frogs also fall asleep. This frog model is a special case of the infinite rate symbiotic branching process on the real line with different motion speeds for the two types. We construct this frog model as the limit of approximating processes and compute the structure of jumps. We show that our frog model can be described by a stochastic partial differential equation on the real line with a jump type noise.
Upper tail large deviation for the one-dimensional frog model

Abstract:In this paper, we study the upper tail large deviation for the one-dimensional frog model. In this model, sleeping and active frogs are assigned to vertices on $\mathbb Z$. While sleeping frogs do not move, the active ones move as independent simple random walks and activate any sleeping frogs. The main object of interest in this model is the asymptotic behavior of the first passage time ${\rm T}(0,n)$, which is the time needed to activate the frog at the vertex $n$, assuming there is only one active frog at $0$ at the beginning. While the law of large numbers and central limit theorems have been well established, the intricacies of large deviations remain elusive. Using renewal theory, Bérard and Ramírez have pointed out a slowdown phenomenon where the probability that the first passage time ${\rm T}(0,n)$ is significantly larger than its expectation decays sub-exponentially and lies between $\exp(-n^{1/2+o(1)})$ and $\exp(-n^{1/3+o(1)})$. In this article, using a novel covering process approach, we confirm that $1/2$ is the correct exponent, i.e., the rate of upper large deviations is given by $n^{1/2}$. Moreover, we obtain an explicit rate function that is characterized by properties of Brownian motion and is strictly concave.

Abstract:A two-type version of the frog model on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ is formulated, where active type $i$ particles move according to lazy random walks with probability $p_i$ of jumping in each time step ($i=1,2$). Each site is independently assigned a random number of particles. At time 0, the particles at the origin are activated and assigned type 1 and the particles at one other site are activated and assigned type 2, while all other particles are sleeping. When an active type $i$ particle moves to a new site, any sleeping particles there are activated and assigned type $i$, with an arbitrary tie-breaker deciding the type if the site is hit by particles of both types in the same time step. We show that the event $G_i$ that type $i$ activates infinitely many particles has positive probability for all $p_1,p_2\in(0,1]$ ($i=1,2$). Furthermore, if $p_1=p_2$, then the types can coexist in the sense that $\mathbb{P}(G_1\cap G_2)>0$. We also formulate several open problems. For instance, we conjecture that, when the initial number of particles per site has a heavy tail, the types can coexist also when $p_1\neq p_2$.

The Critical Beta-splitting Random Tree: Heights and Related Results

Abstract:In the critical beta-splitting model of a random $n$-leaf binary tree, leaf-sets are recursively split into subsets, and a set of $m$ leaves is split into subsets containing $i$ and $m-i$ leaves with probabilities proportional to $1/{i(m-i)}$. We study the continuous-time model in which the holding time before that split is exponential with rate $h_{m-1}$, the harmonic number. We (sharply) evaluate the first two moments of the time-height $D_n$ and of the edge-height $L_n$ of a uniform random leaf (that is, the length of the path from the root to the leaf), and prove the corresponding CLTs. We find the limiting value of the correlation between the heights of two random leaves of the same tree realization, and analyze the expected number of splits necessary for a set of $t$ leaves to partially or completely break away from each other. We give tail bounds for the time-height and the edge-height of the {\em tree}, that is the maximal leaf heights. We show that there is a limit distribution for the size of a uniform random subtree, and derive the asymptotics of the mean size. Our proofs are based on asymptotic analysis of the attendant (sum-type) recurrences. The essential idea is to replace such a recursive equality by a pair of recursive inequalities for which matching asymptotic solutions can be found, allowing one to bound, both ways, the elusive explicit solution of the recursive equality. This reliance on recursive inequalities necessitates usage of Laplace transforms rather than Fourier characteristic functions.

The Critical Beta-splitting Random Tree II: Overview and Open Problems

Abstract:In the critical beta-splitting model of a random $n$-leaf rooted tree, clades are recursively (from the root) split into sub-clades, and a clade of $m$ leaves is split into sub-clades containing $i$ and $m-i$ leaves with probabilities $\propto 1/(i(m-i))$. Study of structure theory and explicit quantitative aspects of the model is an active research topic, and this article provides an extensive overview what is currently known. For many results there are different proofs, probabilistic or analytic, so the model provides a testbed for a ``compare and contrast" discussion of techniques. We give some proofs that are not currently available elsewhere, and also give heuristics for some proven results and for some open problems. Our discussion is centered around three ``foundational" results. (i) There is a canonical embedding into a continuous-time model, that is a random tree $\mbox{CTCS}(n)$ on $n$ leaves with real-valued edge lengths, and this model turns out more convenient to study. The family $(\mbox{CTCS}(n), n \ge 2)$ is consistent under a ``delete random leaf and prune" operation. That leads to an explicit inductive construction of $(\mbox{CTCS}(n), n \ge 2)$ as $n$ increases, and then to a limit structure $\mbox{CTCS}(\infty)$ formalized via exchangeable partitions, in some ways analogous to the Brownian continuum random tree. (ii) There is a CLT for leaf heights, and the analytic proof can be extended to provide surprisingly precise analysis of other height-related aspects. (iii) There is an explicit description of the limit {\em fringe distribution} relative to a random leaf, whose graphical representation is essentially the format of the cladogram representation of biological phylogenies. Many open problems remain.

Abstract:We introduce a model of tree-rooted planar maps weighted by their number of $2$-connected blocks. We study its enumerative properties and prove that it undergoes a phase transition. We give the distribution of the size of the largest $2$-connected blocks in the three regimes (subcritical, critical and supercritical) and further establish that the scaling limit is the Brownian Continuum Random Tree in the critical and supercritical regimes, with respective rescalings $\sqrt{n/\log(n)}$ and $\sqrt{n}$.

Abstract:We investigate scaling limits of trees built by uniform attachment with freezing, which is a variant of the classical model of random recursive trees introduced in a companion paper. Here vertices are allowed to freeze, and arriving vertices cannot be attached to already frozen ones. We identify a phase transition when the number of non-frozen vertices roughly evolves as the total number of vertices to a given power. In particular, we observe a critical regime where the scaling limit is a random compact real tree, closely related to a time non-homogenous Kingman coalescent process identified by Aldous. Interestingly, in this critical regime, a condensation phenomenon can occur.
