Abstract:The main aim of this paper is to solve the design spectrum problem for Tietze's graph, the two 18-vertex Blanusa snarks, the six snarks on 20 vertices (including the flower snark J5), the twenty snarks on 22 vertices (including the two Loupekine snarks) and Goldberg's snark 3. Together with the Petersen graph (for which the spectrum has already been computed) this list includes all non-trivial snarks of up to 22 vertices. We also give partial results for a selection of larger graphs: the two Celmins-Swart snarks, the 26- and 34-vertex Blanusa snarks, the flower snark J7, the double star snark, Zamfirescu's graph, Goldberg's snark 5, the Szekeres snark and the Watkins snark.

Abstract:In 1976, Loupekine introduced (via Isaacs) a very general way of constructing new snarks from old snarks by cyclically connecting multipoles constructed by pulling out a path of length 2 from smaller snarks. In this paper, we use Zm lifts of voltage graphs formed by a similar construction to produce a variety of snarks which can be drawn with m -fold rotational symmetry for m≥3 . In particular, we discuss three infinite families of snarks which can be drawn with Zm rotational symmetry whose smallest element is constructed from 3 snarks with 3-fold rotational symmetry on 28 vertices; one family has the property that the oddness of the family increases with m . We also develop a new infinite family of snarks, of order 12 m for each odd m≥3 , which can be drawn with m -fold rotational symmetry and which are constructed beginning with a 3-edge-colorable graph, instead of a snark.

Abstract:Mohar and Vodopivec [Combinatorics, Probability and Computing (2006) 15, 877-893] proved that for every integer k (k >= 1 and k not equal 2), there exists a snark which polyhedrally embeds in N-k and presented the problem: Is there a snark that has a polyhedral embedding in the Klein bottle? In the paper, we give a positive solution of the problem and strengthen Mohar and Vodopivec's result. We prove that for every integer k (k >= 2), there exists an infinite family of snarks with nonorientable genus k which polyhedrally embed in N-k. Furthermore, for every integer k (k > 0), there exists a snark with nonorientable genus k which polyhedrally embeds in N-k.

Abstract:An edge e is normal in a proper edge-coloring of a cubic graph G if the number of distinct colors on four edges incident to e is 2 or 4: A normal edge-coloring of G is a proper edge-coloring in which every edge of G is normal. The Petersen Coloring Conjecture is equivalent to stating that every bridgeless cubic graph has a normal 5-edge-coloring. Since every 3-edge-coloring of a cubic graph is trivially normal, it is suficient to consider only snarks to establish the conjecture. In this paper, we consider a class of superpositioned snarks obtained by choosing a cycle C in a snark G and superpositioning vertices of C by one of two simple supervertices and edges of C by superedges Hx;y, where H is any snark and x; y any pair of nonadjacent vertices of H: For such superpositioned snarks, two suficient conditions are given for the existence of a normal 5-edge-coloring. The first condition yields a normal 5-edge-coloring for all hypohamiltonian snarks used as superedges, but only for some of the possible ways of connecting them. In particular, since the Flower snarks are hypohamiltonian, this consequently yields a normal 5-edge-coloring for many snarks superpositioned by the Flower snarks. The second sufficient condition is more demanding, but its application yields a normal 5-edge-colorings for all superpositions by the Flower snarks. The same class of snarks is considered in [S. Liu, R.-X. Hao, C.-Q. Zhang, Berge{Fulkerson coloring for some families of superposition snarks, Eur. J. Comb. 96 (2021) 103344] for the Berge-Fulkerson conjecture. Since we established that this class has a Petersen coloring, this immediately yields the result of the above mentioned paper.

Proper Z4 x Z2-colorings: structural characterization with application to some snarks

Abstract:A proper abelian coloring of a cubic graph G by a finite abelian group A is any proper edge-coloring of G by the non-zero elements of A such that the sum of the colors of the three edges incident to any vertex v of G equals zero. It is known that cyclic groups of order smaller than 10 do not color all bridgeless cubic graphs, and that all abelian groups of order at least 12 do. This leaves the question open for the four so called exceptional groups Z4 x Z2, Z3 x Z3, Z10 and Z11 for snarks. It is conjectured in literature that every cubic graph has a proper abelian coloring by each exceptional group and it is further known that the existence of a proper Z4 x Z2-coloring of G implies the existence of a proper coloring of G by all the remaining exceptional groups. In this paper, we give a characterization of a proper Z4 x Z2-coloring in terms of the existence of a matching M in a 2-factor F of G with particular properties. Moreover, in order to modify an arbitrary matching M so that it meets the requirements of the characterization, we first introduce an incidence structure of the cycles of F in relation to the cycles of G - M. Further, we provide a sufficient condition under which M can be modified into a desired matching in terms of particular properties of the introduced incidence structure. We conclude the paper by applying the results to some oddness two snarks, in particular to permutation snarks. We believe that the approach of this paper with some additional refinements extends to larger classes of snarks, if not to all in general.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a bridgeless cubic graph. The \textit{resistance} of $G$, denoted $r(G)$, is the minimum number of edges which can be removed from $G$ in order to render 3-edge-colourability. The \textit{oddness} of $G$, denoted $\omega(G)$, is the minimum number of odd components in a 2-factor of $G$. The \textit{colouring defect} of $G$ (or simply, the \textit{defect} of $G$), denoted $\mu_3(G)$, is the minimum number of edges not contained in any set of three perfect matchings of $G$. These three parameters are regarded as measurements of uncolourability of snarks, partly because any one of these parameters equal zero if and only if $G$ is 3-edge-colourable. It is also known that $r(G) \geq \omega(G)$ and that $\mu_3(G) \geq \frac{3}{2}\omega(G)$ \cite{fiol,jinsteffen}. We have shown that the ratio of oddness to resistance can be arbitrarily large for non-trivial snarks \cite{allie1}. It has also been shown that the ratio of the defect to oddness can be arbitrarily large for non-trivial snarks, although this result was only shown for graphs with oddness equal to 2 \cite{karabasetal}. In the same paper, the question was posed whether there exists non-trivial snarks for given resistance $r$ or given oddness $\omega$, and arbitrarily large defect. In this paper, we prove a stronger result: For any positive integers $r \geq 2$, even $\omega \geq r$, and $d \geq \frac{3}{2}\omega$, there exists a non-trivial snark $G$ with $r(G)=r$, $\omega(G)=\omega$ and $\mu_3(G) \geq d$.

Generation of Cycle Permutation Graphs and Permutation Snarks

Abstract:We present an algorithm for the efficient generation of all pairwise non-isomorphic cycle permutation graphs, i.e. cubic graphs with a $2$-factor consisting of two chordless cycles, and non-hamiltonian cycle permutation graphs, from which the permutation snarks can easily be computed. This allows us to generate all cycle permutation graphs up to order $34$ and all permutation snarks up to order $46$, improving upon previous computational results by Brinkmann et al. Moreover, we give several improved lower bounds for interesting permutation snarks, such as for a smallest permutation snark of order $6 \bmod 8$ or a smallest permutation snark of girth at least $6$. These computational results also allow us to complete a characterisation of the orders for which non-hamiltonian cycle permutation graphs exist, answering an open question by Klee from 1972, and yield many more counterexamples to a conjecture by Zhang.

Strictly critical snarks with girth or cyclic connectivity equal to 6

Abstract:A snark -- connected cubic graph with chromatic index $4$ -- is critical if the graph resulting from the removal of any pair of distinct adjacent vertices is $3$-edge-colourable; it is bicritical if the same is true for any pair of distinct vertices. A snark is strictly critical if it is critical but not bicritical. Very little is known about strictly critical snarks. Computational evidence suggests that strictly critical snarks constitute a tiny minority of all critical snarks. Strictly critical snarks of order $n$ exist if and only if $n$ is even and at least 32, and for each such order there is at least one strictly critical snark with cyclic connectivity $4$. A sparse infinite family of cyclically $5$-connected strictly critical snarks is also known, but those with cyclic connectivity greater than $5$ have not been discovered so far. In this paper we fill the gap by constructing cyclically $6$-connected strictly critical snarks of each even order $n\ge 342$. In addition, we construct cyclically $5$-connected strictly critical snarks of girth 6 for every even $n\ge 66$ with $n\equiv 2\pmod8$.

Abstract:The design spectrum of a simple graph $G$ is the set of positive integers $n$ such that there exists an edgewise decomposition of the complete graph $K_n$ into $n(n - 1)/(2 |E(G)|)$ copies of $G$. We compute the design spectra for 7788 6-regular graphs with 12 vertices.

Abstract:A normal 5-edge-coloring of a cubic graph is a coloring such that for every edge the number of distinct colors incident to its end-vertices is 3 or 5 (and not 4). The well known Petersen Coloring Conjecture is equivalent to the statement that every bridgeless cubic graph has a normal 5-edge-coloring. All 3-edge-colorings of a cubic graph are obviously normal, so in order to establish the conjecture it is sufficient to consider only snarks. In our previous paper [J. Sedlar, R. Škrekovski, Normal 5-edge-coloring of some snarks superpositioned by the Petersen graph, Applied Mathematics and Computation 467 (2024) 128493], we considered superpositions of any snark G along a cycle C by two simple supervertices and by the superedge obtained from the Petersen graph, but only for some of the possible ways of connecting supervertices and superedges. The present paper is a continuation of that paper, herein we consider superpositions by the Petersen graph for all the remaining connections and establish that for all of them the Petersen Coloring Conjecture holds.

Abstract:In a (proper) edge-coloring of a bridgeless cubic graph G an edge e is rich (resp. poor) if the number of colors of all edges incident to end-vertices of e is 5 (resp. 3). An edge-coloring of G is is normal if every edge of G is either rich or poor. In this paper we consider snarks ~G obtained by a simple superposition of edges and vertices of a cycle C in a snark G: For an even cycle C we show that a normal coloring of G can be extended to a normal coloring of ~G without changing colors of edges outside C in G: An interesting remark is that this is in general impossible for odd cycles, since the normal coloring of a Petersen graph P10 cannot be extended to a superposition of P10 on a 5-cycle without changing colors outside the 5-cycle. On the other hand, as our colorings of the superpositioned snarks introduce 18 or more poor edges, we are inclined to believe that every bridgeless cubic graph istinct from P10 has a normal coloring with at least one poor edge and possibly with at least 6 if we also exclude the Petersen graph with one vertex truncated.

Abstract:The colouring defect of a cubic graph is the smallest number of edges left uncovered by any set of three perfect matchings. While $3$-edge-colourable graphs have defect $0$, those that cannot be $3$-edge-coloured (that is, snarks) are known to have defect at least $3$. In this paper we focus on the structure and properties of snarks with defect $3$. For such snarks we develop a theory of reductions similar to standard reductions of short cycles and small cuts in general snarks. We prove that every snark with defect $3$ can be reduced to a snark with defect $3$ which is either nontrivial (cyclically $4$-edge-connected and of girth at least $5$) or to one that arises from a nontrivial snark of defect greater than $3$ by inflating a vertex lying on a suitable $5$-cycle to a triangle. The proofs rely on a detailed analysis of Fano flows associated with triples of perfect matchings leaving exactly three uncovered edges. In the final part of the paper we discuss application of our results to the conjectures of Berge and Fulkerson, which provide the main motivation for our research.

Abstract:Over the past twenty years, critical and bicritical snarks have been appearing in the literature in various forms and in different contexts. Two main variants of criticality of snarks have been studied: criticality with respect to the non-existence of a $3$-edge-colouring and criticality with respect to the non-existence of a nowhere-zero $4$-flow. In this paper we show that these two kinds of criticality coincide, thereby completing previous partial results of de Freitas et al. [Electron. Notes Discrete Math. 50 (2015), 199--204] and Fiol et al. [ <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1702.07156v1" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1702.07156v1">arXiv:1702.07156v1</a> (2017)].

Abstract:The resolutions of the designs in two infinite series of 4-designs constructed by Alltop and Hubaut are the subject of this study. We examine two types of resolutions, namely the s-resolutions and the point-missing s-resolutions. The result can essentially be stated that the designs possess 3-resolutions and point-missing s-resolutions for s = 2 , 3 subject to a necessary numerical condition of the parameters.

Abstract:A realizer, commonly known as Schnyder woods, of a triangulation is a partition of its interior edges into three oriented rooted trees. A flip in a realizer is a local operation that transforms one realizer into another. Two types of flips in a realizer have been introduced: colored flips and cycle flips. A corresponding flip graph is defined for each of these two types of flips. The vertex sets are the realizers, and two realizers are adjacent if they can be transformed into each other by one flip. In this paper we study the relation between these two types of flips and their corresponding flip graphs. We show that a cycle flip can be obtained from linearly many colored flips. We also prove an upper bound of $O(n^2)$ on the diameter of the flip graph of realizers defined by colored flips. In addition, a data structure is given to dynamically maintain a realizer over a sequence of colored flips which supports queries, including getting a node's barycentric coordinates, in $O(\log n)$ time per flip or query.

On the Metric Dimensions for Sets of Vertices

Abstract:Resolving sets were originally designed to locate vertices of a graph one at a time. For the purpose of locating multiple vertices of the graph simultaneously, $\{\ell\}$-resolving sets were recently introduced. In this paper, we present new results regarding the $\{\ell\}$-resolving sets of a graph. In addition to proving general results, we consider $\{2\}$-resolving sets in rook's graphs and connect them to block designs. We also introduce the concept of $\ell$-solid-resolving sets, which is a natural generalisation of solid-resolving sets. We prove some general bounds and characterisations for $\ell$-solid-resolving sets and show how $\ell$-solid- and $\{\ell\}$-resolving sets are connected to each other. In the last part of the paper, we focus on the infinite graph family of flower snarks. We consider the $\ell$-solid- and $\{\ell\}$-metric dimensions of flower snarks. In two proofs regarding flower snarks, we use a new computer-aided reduction-like approach.

VCProof: Constructing Shorter and Faster-to-Verify zkSNARKs with Vector Oracles.

Abstract:The construction of zkSNARKs involves designing a Polynomial IOP that matches with the constraint system for which it proves membership. Designing this Polynomial IOP is a challenging task because the constraint system is typically not expressed in terms of polynomials but in terms of matrices and vectors. To mitigate mismatch, we propose a new methodology for the first step in SNARK construction, that first designs a matching Vector Oracle protocol before compiling it into a Polynomial IOP. The native first-class citizens of the Vector Oracle protocol are vectors; and by virtue of matching with the language of the arithmetic constraint system, Vector Oracle protocols are more intuitive to design and analyze. The Vector-Oracle-to-PIOP compilation procedure is protocol-independent, allowing us to present and optimize it as a standalone component, leading to the discovery of a series of acceleration techniques. We apply our methodology to construct three zkSNARKs, each targeting a constraint system: the Rank-1 Constaint System (R1CS), the Hadamard Product Relation (HPR), and a modified PLONK circuit. All three zkSNARKs achieve shorter proofs and/or smaller verification costs compared to the state-of-the-art constructions targeting the same constraint systems. Specifically, VCProof/R1CS defeats Marlin in proof size, with a slightly higher verification cost; VCProof/HPR and VCProof/POV outperform Sonic and PLONK, respectively, in both proof sizes and verification costs. In particular, the proof of VCProof/POV has only two field elements and six group elements, thus becoming the shortest among all existing universal-setup zkSNARKs.

Abstract:The design of zkSNARKs is increasingly complicated and requires familiarity with a broad class of cryptographic and algebraic tools. This complexity in zkSNARK design also increases the difficulty in zkSNARK implementation, analysis, and optimization. To address this complexity, we develop a new workflow for designing and implementing zkSNARKs, called VOProof. In VOProof, the designer only needs to construct a Vector Oracle (VO) protocol that is intuitive and straightforward to design, and then feeds this protocol to our VO compiler to transform it into a fully functional zkSNARK. This new workflow conceals most algebraic and cryptographic operations inside the compiler, so that the designer is no longer required to understand these cumbersome and error prone procedures. Moreover, our compiler can be fine-tuned to compile one VO protocol into multiple zkSNARKs with different tradeoffs.

Abstract:Graph pebbling is a game played on graphs with pebbles on their vertices. A pebbling move removes two pebbles from one vertex and places one pebble on an adjacent vertex. The pebbling number $\pi(G)$ is the smallest $t$ so that from any initial configuration of $t$ pebbles it is possible, after a sequence of pebbling moves, to place a pebble on any given target vertex. In this paper, we provide the first results on the pebbling numbers of snarks. Until now, only the Petersen graph had its pebbling number correctly established, although attempts had been made for the Flower and Watkins snarks.

Subspace Designs Based on Algebraic Function Fields

Abstract:Subspace designs are a (large) collection of high-dimensional subspaces {H-i- of F-q(m) such that for any low-dimensional subspace W, only a small number of subspaces from the collection have non-trivial intersection with W; more precisely, the sum of dimensions of W boolean AND H-i is at most some parameter L. The notion was put forth by Guruswami and Xing (STOC'13) with applications to list decoding variants of Reed-Solomon and algebraic-geometric codes and later also used for explicit rank-metric codes with optimal list decoding radius. Guruswami and Kopparty (FOCS'13, Combinatorica '16) gave an explicit construction of subspace designs with near-optimal parameters. This construction was based on polynomials and has close connections to folded Reed Solomon codes and required large field size (specifically q >= m). Forbes and Guruswami (RANDOM'15) used this construction to give explicit constant degree "dimension expanders" over large fields and noted that subspace designs are a powerful tool in linear-algebraic pseudorandomness. Here, we construct subspace designs over any field, at the expense of a modest worsening of the bound L on total intersection dimension. Our approach is based on a (non-trivial) extension of the polynomial-based construction to algebraic function fields and instantiating the approach with cyclotomic function fields. Plugging in our new subspace designs in the construction of Forbes and Guruswami yields dimension expanders over F-n for any field F, with logarithmic degree and expansion guarantee for subspaces of dimension Omega(n/(log logn)).
