Abstract:This paper analyses the finer structure of Newton strata in loop groups. These can be decomposed into so-called central leaves. We define them, and determine their global geometric structure. We then study the closure of central leaves, both by proving some general properties and by considering an illustrative example.

Abstract:We want to discuss various applications of modular forms in topology. The starting point is elliptic genus and its generalizations. The main techniques are the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula, Kac-Moody Lie algebras, modular forms and theta-functions. Just as the representations theory of classical Lie groups has close connections with the Atiyah-Singer index formula as exposed in [A1], the representation theory of loop groups plays very important role in our study. One of the most important new features of loop group representations is the modular invariance of the Kac-Weyl character formula, which allows us to derive many interesting new results and to unify many important old results in topology. In this paper we will develope along this line. We hope that the other features of loop group representations, such as fusion rules and tensor category structure may also be applied to topology. See the discussions in §3. The contents of this paper is organized in the following way. In §1 we introduce elliptic genus by combining index theory and the representation theory of loop groups. The relation of the classical index theory with representation theory of classical Lie groups was discussed in [A1]. Here one finds that just replacing the classical Lie groups by their corresponding loop groups, we get the complete theory of elliptic genus, or more generally the index theory on loop space. Especially the Dirac operator and the Witten genus of loop space are derived more convincingly in this way. Then all of the other well-known properties of elliptic genus, such as functional equations, characterizations by rigidity and fibrations, can be easily obtained. Here we only pick some less well-known results to discuss, for example the expressions of the parameters in elliptic genera in terms of theta-functions. Different from the classical Lie group case, a new feature in our situation appears, the modular invariance which, by combining with index theory, is applied to obtain many new topological results. This is the content of §2. Most results in this section are special cases of more general results. For simplicity we only give the main ideas of the proofs. We make some geometric constructions in §3 to understand elliptic cohomology. The construction in §3.3 is motivated by the vertex operator algebra construction of the monstrous moonshine module. Abstract:Certain Iwahori double cosets in the loop group of a reductive group, known under the names of P -alcoves or -alcoves, play an important role in the study of affine Deligne–Lusztig varieties. For such an Iwahori double coset, its Newton stratification is related to the Newton stratification of an Iwahori double coset in a Levi subgroup. We study this relationship further, providing in particular a bijection between the occurring Newton strata. As an application, we prove a conjecture of Dong-Gyu Lim, giving a non-emptiness criterion for basic affine Deligne–Lusztig varieties.

Abstract:In this note we investigate the centraliser of a linearly growing element of (that is, a root of a Dehn twist automorphism), and show that it has a finite index subgroup mapping onto a direct product of certain "equivariant McCool groups" with kernel a finitely generated free abelian group. In particular, this allows us to show it is VF and hence finitely presented.

Abstract:Let G be a group and N be a -solvable normal subgroup of G with , where is composed by all prime divisors of the order of N . In this paper, we determine the structure of if is a maximal subgroup of group G for every -element , where is a Hall -subgroup of N . In particular, if is a set composed by a single prime p , we show that N is solvable, which has its own independent significance. If we assume in the above results, then it is [8, Theorems A and B] by removing the conditions " G is p -solvable" and "with non-abelian". We also give a detailed structure description of such groups. Further, we generalize [9, Theorem A] by removing the condition " N is p -solvable", and also provides a positive answer to [9, Question] by giving the structure of if is a maximal subgroup of G for every p -regular element .

Abstract:We classify all three-dimensional connected topological loops such that the group topologically generated by their left translations is the four-dimensional connected Lie group $G$ which has trivial center and precisely two one-dimensional normal subgroups. We show that $G$ is not the multiplication group of connected topological proper loops.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a number of results about the topology of the leaves of a closed singular Riemannian foliation $(M,\fol)$. If $M$ is simply connected, we prove that the leaves are finitely covered by nilpotent spaces, and characterize the fundamental group of the generic leaves. If $M$ has virtually nilpotent fundamental group, we prove that the leaves have virtually nilpotent fundamental group as well.

Abstract:We investigate the coarse homology of leaves in foliations of compact manifolds. This is motivated by the observation that the non-leaves constructed by Schweitzer and by Zeghib all have non-finitely generated coarse homology. This led us to ask whether the coarse homology of leaves in a compact manifold always has to be finitely generated. We show that this is not the case by proving that there exist many leaves with non-finitely generated coarse homology. Moreover, we improve Schweitzer's non-leaf construction and produce non-leaves with trivial coarse homology.

Abstract:A compact Polish foliated space is considered. Part of this work studies coarsely quasi-isometric invariants of leaves in some residual saturated subset when the foliated space is transitive. In fact, we also use "equi-" versions of this kind of invariants, which means that the definition is satisfied with the same constants by some given set of leaves. For instance, the following properties are proved. Either all dense leaves without holonomy are equi-coarsely quasi-isometric to each other, or else there exist residually many dense leaves without holonomy such that each of them is coarsely quasi-isometric to meagerly many leaves. Assuming that the foliated space is minimal, the first of the above alternatives holds if and if the leaves without holonomy satisfy a condition called coarse quasi-symmetry. A similar dichotomy holds for the growth type of the leaves, as well as an analogous characterization of the first alternative in the minimal case, involving a property called growth symmetry. Moreover some classes of growth are shared, either by residually many leaves, or by meagerly many leaves. If some leaf without holonomy is amenable, then all dense leaves without holonomy are equi-amenable, and, in the minimal case, they satisfy a property called amenable symmetry. Residually many leaves have the same asymptotic dimension. If the foliated space is minimal, then any pair of nonempty open sets in the Higson coronas of the leaves with holonomy contain homeomorphic nonempty open subsets. Another part studies limit sets of leaves at points in their Higson corona, defined like the usual limit sets at their ends.

Abstract:For a singular Riemannian foliation whose leaves are properly embedded, we show in the first part of this article the existence of global tubular neighbourhoods, and we develop a global description of the foliation as stratification by types of leaves. The second part deals with the further restriction to a foliation without horizontal conjugate points, introduced by Lytchak and Thorbergsson, which in the special case of an isometric group action equals the concept of variationally completeness. Therefrom, we deduce a global geometric description -- the focal points of the leaves are exactly the singular points -- as well as a topological one: tautness of the leaves.

Abstract:On a Riemann surface, periods of a meromorphic differential along closed loops define a period character from the absolute homology group into the additive group of complex numbers. Fixing the period character in strata of meromorphic differentials defines the isoperiodic foliation where the remaining degrees of freedom are the relative periods between the zeroes of the differential. In strata of meromorphic differentials with exactly two zeroes, leaves have a natural structure of translation surface. In this paper, we give a complete description of the isoperiodic leaves in marked stratum $\mathcal{H}(1,1,-2)$ of meromorphic $1$-forms with two simple zeroes and a pole of order two on an elliptic curve. For each character, the corresponding leaf is a connected Loch Ness Monster. The translation structures of generic leaves feature a ramified cover of infinite degree over the flat torus defined by the lattice of absolute periods. By comparison, isoperiodic leaves of the unmarked stratum are complex disks endowed with a half-translation structure having infinitely many singular points. Finally, we give a description of the large-scale conformal geometry of the wall-and-chamber decomposition of the leaves.

Abstract:We investigate the geometry of the special fiber of the integral model of a Shimura variety with parahoric level at a given prime place. To be more precise, we deal with the definition of central leaves in this situation, their local closedness, and the relationship between the folations for varying parahoric level. This is connected to the verification of axioms for integral models formulated by He and Rapoport.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a zebra structure on a surface, which is a more general geometric structure than a translation structure or a dilation structure that still gives a directional foliation of every slope. We are concerned with the question of when a free homotopy class of loops (or a homotopy class of arcs relative to endpoints) has a canonical representative or family of representatives, either as closed leaves or chains of leaves joining singularities. We prove that such representations exist if the surface has a triangulation with edges joining singularities (in the zebra structure sense). In the special case when the surface is closed, we describe several geometric conditions that are equivalent to the existence of canonical representations in every homotopy class of closed curves.

Abstract:We introduce and study a notion of analytic loop group with a Riemann–Hilbert factorization relevant for the representation theory of quantum affine algebras at roots of unity Uϵ(gˆ) with non-trivial central charge. We introduce a Poisson structure and study properties of its Poisson dual group. We prove that the Hopf–Poisson structure is isomorphic to the semi-classical limit of the center of Uϵ(gˆ) (it is a geometric realization of the center). Then the symplectic leaves, and corresponding equivalence classes of central characters of Uϵ(gˆ), are parameterized by certain G-bundles on an elliptic curve.

Abstract:Let $(G,g)$ be a 4-dimensional Riemannian Lie group with a 2-dimensional left-invariant, conformal foliation $\mathcal{F}$ with minimal leaves. Let $J$ be an almost Hermitian structure on $G$ adapted to the foliation $\mathcal{F}$. The corresponding Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ must then belong to one of 20 families $\mathfrak{g}_1,\dots,\mathfrak{g}_{20}$ according to S. Gudmundsson and M. Svensson. We classify such structures $J$ which are almost Kähler $(\mathcal{A}\mathcal{K})$, integrable $(\mathcal{I})$ or Kähler $(\mathcal{K})$. Hereby, we construct 16 multi-dimensional almost Kähler families, 18 integrable families and 11 Kähler families.

Abstract:The object of this paper is to study GL(2,R) orbit closures in hyperelliptic components of strata of abelian differentials. The main result is that all higher rank affine invariant submanifolds in hyperelliptic components are branched covering constructions, i.e. every translation surface in the affine invariant submanifold covers a translation surface in a lower genus hyperelliptic component of a stratum of abelian differentials. This result implies finiteness of algebraically primitive Teichmuller curves in all hyperelliptic components for genus greater than two. A classification of all GL(2, R) orbit closures in hyperelliptic components of strata (up to computing connected components and up to finitely many nonarithmetic rank one orbit closures) is provided. Our main theorem resolves a pair of conjectures of Mirzakhani in the case of hyperelliptic components of moduli space.

Abstract:The core group of a classical link was introduced independently by A.J. Kelly in 1991 and M. Wada in 1992. It is a link invariant defined by a presentation involving the arcs and crossings of a diagram, related to Wirtinger's presentation of the fundamental group of a link complement. Two close relatives of the core group are defined by presentations involving regions rather than arcs; one of them is related to Dehn's presentation of a link group. The definitions are extended to virtual link diagrams and properties of the resulting invariants are discussed.
