Abstract:For understanding magnetic effects on dynamical tides, we study the rotating magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) flow driven by harmonic forcing. The linear responses are analytically derived in a periodic box under the local WKB approximation. Both the kinetic and Ohmic dissipations at the resonant frequencies are calculated and the various parameters are investigated. Although magnetic pressure may be negligible compared to thermal pressure, magnetic field can be important for the first-order perturbation, e.g. dynamical tides. It is found that magnetic field splits the resonant frequency, namely the rotating hydrodynamic flow has only one resonant frequency but the rotating MHD flow has two, one positive and the other negative. In the weak field regime the dissipations are asymmetric around the two resonant frequencies and this asymmetry is more striking with a weaker magnetic field. It is also found that both the kinetic and Ohmic dissipations at the resonant frequencies are inversely proportional to the Ekman number and the square of wavenumber. The dissipation at the resonant frequency on small scales is almost equal to the dissipation at the non-resonant frequencies, namely the resonance takes its effect on the dissipation at intermediate length scales. Moreover, the waves with phase propagation perpendicular to magnetic field are much more damped. It is also interesting to find that the frequency-averaged dissipation is constant. This result suggests that in compact objects magnetic effects on tidal dissipation should be considered.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to understand the influence of magnetic fields on dynamic tides. Specifically, the author has studied the dynamic response of rotating magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows under harmonic forcing, with particular attention to how the magnetic field affects the resonance frequency and the resulting tidal dissipation. By analyzing the linear response, calculating the kinetic energy and Ohmic dissipation under different parameters, and exploring the specific influence of the magnetic field on the dynamic tidal phenomena in rotating fluids. The main findings of the paper include: 1. **Influence of magnetic field on resonance frequency**: In the absence of a magnetic field, the rotating fluid flow has only one resonance frequency; while in the presence of a magnetic field, the rotating MHD flow has two resonance frequencies, one positive frequency and one negative frequency. 2. **Asymmetry of dissipation**: Under weak magnetic field conditions, the dissipation near the two resonance frequencies is asymmetric, and this asymmetry is more significant when the magnetic field is weaker. 3. **Relationship between dissipation and scale**: The dissipation on a small scale at the resonance frequency is almost equal to the dissipation at the non - resonance frequency, indicating that the resonance effect mainly affects the dissipation on an intermediate scale. 4. **Influence of wave propagation direction**: Waves whose phase propagation direction is perpendicular to the magnetic field are more strongly damped. 5. **Frequency - averaged dissipation**: The frequency - averaged dissipation is a constant, which implies that it is necessary to consider the influence of magnetic fields on tidal dissipation in compact celestial bodies. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the role of magnetic fields in astrophysics, especially in tidal interactions between binary systems, planets and stars.
